Reborn as an Adventurer: I Gain a Skill From Every Monster I Eat

Chapter 119: Chapter 119 — A New Kind of Danger

The moorland grew stranger as he pushed further from Thistledown, the open heather giving way in places to patches of low-hanging mist that clung stubbornly to the ground even as the morning sun climbed higher, and Arlen found himself, on his tenth day out from Greyhaven, walking with a heightened, careful attention he hadn’t needed since leaving the Ashen Frontier’s borders.

He noticed the first sign of trouble almost by accident — a patch of heather disturbed in a way that didn’t match wind or grazing, the stems bent and broken along a path that seemed to circle rather than cross the trail.

Something’s been watching this stretch, he thought, slowing his pace, Earthen Grip activating almost without conscious decision as he pressed his awareness downward through his boots.

He felt nothing through the ground — no heavy footfalls, no obvious weight moving nearby — and found that absence, oddly, more unsettling than a clear warning would have been.

He called on Hawk’s Eye next, scanning the misty terrain with careful, deliberate attention, and still found nothing definitively wrong, only the same low-hanging fog drifting in slow, indifferent patterns across the heather.

Careful, he told himself, hand settling near his sword hilt without fully drawing it. Something’s here. I just can’t see it properly.

He continued forward at a slower pace, senses stretched as wide as he could manage, and it was Shadow Sense that finally caught what his other abilities had missed — not a clear shape, but a strange, wrong absence in the ambient awareness the ability usually provided, a patch of ground that felt, in some indefinable way, hollowed out of proper presence.

He stopped walking entirely.

”I know you’re there,” he said aloud, more to test the reaction than from any real confidence in the claim.

The mist shifted.

It happened slowly at first, a section of the low-hanging fog drawing inward, coalescing into something with vague, humanoid proportions but no clear edges, its form flickering between substance and absence in a way that made his eyes ache trying to properly focus on it.

Moor-wraith, he thought, recalling a fragment from the guild bestiary’s sparse regional notes, something about semi-corporeal predators that used disorientation rather than raw strength. Rare. Dangerous specifically because it’s hard to actually hit.

It moved toward him with unsettling, silent speed, and Arlen threw himself sideways on instinct alone, his blade cutting through empty air where the creature’s form had been a half-second before — already reforming several yards away, patient and unhurried in a way that felt considerably more unnerving than any straightforward charge.

”Not going to make this easy, are you,” Arlen muttered, circling carefully, trying to keep the creature within his direct line of sight rather than let it disappear back into the surrounding mist.

It struck again, faster this time, and he barely managed to call on Aura Ward before the impact connected — a cold, disorienting pressure rather than any clean physical blow, the strike passing through his defense in a way that left his whole side numb and aching despite the absence of any visible wound.

That’s not ordinary damage, he thought, backing away carefully, testing his numbed arm’s response. Whatever it’s doing, steel alone might not properly touch it.

He thought quickly, cycling through his options with the same careful, rapid calculation that had carried him through every dangerous engagement since the jackal den. Physical strikes seemed to pass through it more than connect properly. Ember Touch’s fire might prove more effective against something that relied on shifting substance rather than solid form — heat, unlike a blade’s edge, didn’t require the same clean, physical contact to do damage.

He called on the ability as the creature surged forward again, gathering heat along his palm rather than his blade this time, and met its next strike with an open-handed thrust that drove concentrated warmth directly into the creature’s shifting, half-formed mass.

The moor-wraith shrieked — a genuine, startled sound, the first clear indication he’d received that it could actually be hurt — and recoiled, its form flickering more violently, edges bleeding into visible smoke where the heat had connected.

”There,” Arlen said, pressing the advantage immediately, driving another burst of concentrated warmth toward the creature before it could fully recover its composure.

It retreated this time, genuinely retreated, its half-formed shape drawing back into the surrounding mist with none of its earlier patient confidence, and Arlen held his position, breathing hard, watching the fog for any sign of its return.

Several tense minutes passed before he finally allowed himself to lower his guard, understanding, with cautious relief, that the creature had genuinely withdrawn rather than simply repositioning for a fresh ambush.

He sat down heavily on a nearby outcropping once the immediate danger had properly passed, his numbed arm slowly regaining feeling, and found himself turning over the encounter with the same careful, methodical attention he gave every genuine lesson this remarkable life kept offering him.

Physical strikes barely touched it. Heat worked considerably better — not overwhelming, but enough to genuinely hurt it, enough that it chose to retreat rather than press the advantage. He flexed his still-tingling fingers, testing the returning sensation. Good thing to know, going forward. Not every threat responds to a blade the way ordinary creatures do.

He continued on cautiously for the remainder of the day, senses kept deliberately sharp, though the moor-wraith didn’t return, and by evening he’d put enough distance behind him that the misty stretch of moorland had given way to more ordinary, open terrain.

He made camp that evening with more careful vigilance than his previous nights on the road had required, and found himself, preparing a modest meal, still processing the strange, unsettling nature of the day’s encounter.

First real test since leaving Greyhaven, he wrote in his journal that evening, the entry carrying a more focused, analytical quality than his recent, wonder-filled reflections. A moor-wraith — semi-corporeal, disorienting rather than overpowering, resistant to ordinary physical strikes. Ember Touch proved considerably more effective than steel alone.

I’d nearly forgotten, these past days of villages and singing stags and thieving foxes, that the road still holds genuine danger alongside its wonder. Good reminder, delivered without permanent cost. I intend to stay properly alert going forward, whatever comfortable rhythm the journey’s easier stretches might otherwise tempt me toward.

He closed the journal, the evening settling quietly around his camp, and found sleep arriving slower than usual that night, his mind still turning over the strange, flickering shape of a threat unlike anything the Ashen Frontier had ever prepared him to properly expect.
