Reborn as an Adventurer: I Gain a Skill From Every Monster I Eat

Chapter 111: Chapter 111 — The Decision

Garrett was waiting at the training yard when Arlen arrived the following morning, though he made no move toward their usual warm-up sequence, simply studying Arlen with the same critical, appraising attention he’d brought to their very first session.

”You’ve got that look,” he said.

”What look?”

”The one that means you’ve finally made up your mind about something you’ve been circling for a long while.” Garrett gestured toward the low bench at the yard’s edge. ”Sit. Tell me.”

Arlen settled onto the bench, the morning air cool and quiet around them, and found the words arriving more easily than he’d expected, given how long he’d carried them.

”I’m ready,” he said. ”To leave. Properly, this time, not just an escort contract or an expedition with a return date already set.”

Garrett nodded slowly, no surprise in his expression, simply quiet, settled acknowledgment. ”Took you long enough to say it plainly. I’ve watched it building in you since the boundary crisis resolved.”

”I wanted to be certain,” Arlen admitted. ”Not just eager. Certain.”

”And now you are.”

”Now I am.”

Garrett studied him a long moment, something complicated moving behind his weathered features — pride, mostly, though threaded through with a quieter, more personal weight Arlen recognized as genuine reluctance to see him go.

”Four years I’ve been training adventurers in this yard,” Garrett said finally. ”You’re not the first talented student I’ve had. You might be the one I’m proudest of, though. Not just for what you’ve built — the techniques, the discipline, the rank. For how you’ve built it. Carefully. Honestly. Without ever cutting corners just because the shortcut was there.”

Arlen felt something tighten in his chest at that, the old man’s careful, hard-won praise landing with more weight than almost anything else he’d heard across this entire, remarkable year.

”I couldn’t have built any of it without you,” he said honestly. ”Whatever I am now, as a fighter, you’re the foundation underneath it.”

”Foundation, maybe,” Garrett said. ”But you’re the one who kept showing up, kept practicing the forms until your arms shook, kept coming back for more even after Millbrook should have given you every reason to walk away from this life entirely. That’s not something I taught you. That was already yours.”

They sat in comfortable silence for a while, the training yard’s familiar quiet settling around them, and Arlen found himself, turning over the accumulated weight of this final, significant conversation, genuinely grateful for exactly how it was unfolding — no dramatic ceremony, simply two people who’d built something real together, finally acknowledging that its next Chapter would carry them in different directions.

”What will you do?” Garrett asked eventually. ”Practically, I mean. Where does this actually begin?”

”I’ll speak with Lyra and Garrick properly, activate the transfer credentials Garrick offered me months back. I don’t know exactly which branch I’ll settle at first — Kess mentioned the capital more than once, and I find myself genuinely curious about it. But I don’t want to rush the decision. I’d rather arrive somewhere deliberately than simply flee the first opportunity that presents itself.”

”Sound thinking,” Garrett said. ”Same careful approach you’ve brought to everything else. No reason to abandon it now, just because the stakes feel larger.”

”There’s a lot to settle here first,” Arlen continued. ”Saying goodbye properly. Making sure everything’s in order before I go. I don’t want to leave carelessly, the way some part of me might have wanted to, years ago, before I understood what actually mattered about this place.”

Garrett rose from the bench, and Arlen followed, understanding without needing to be told that their final proper training session, whenever it eventually came, deserved more ceremony than an ordinary morning’s exercise.

”One more thing, before you go through with all that,” Garrett said. ”I want to see everything you’ve built, one final time. Not to teach you anything new. Just to see it, properly, before you carry it somewhere I won’t be there to watch it continue growing.”

Arlen felt the weight of the request settle into him, understanding exactly what Garrett was actually asking for. ”When?”

”Whenever you’re ready. I’m not in any hurry to rush your goodbye, same as you’re clearly not rushing it either.”

They spent the remainder of that morning in a training session unlike any other they’d shared — not correction, not instruction, simply Garrett watching, occasionally offering a quiet word of genuine, hard-won approval as Arlen worked through every technique he’d built across the past year, Edgeline Strike and Aura Ward and the elemental-flavored variations he’d layered atop them, Storm Step carrying him across the yard with a fluid confidence that would have seemed impossible to the clumsy, uncertain rookie who’d first walked through Garrett’s gate.

”There,” Garrett said finally, once Arlen had worked through the last of his forms, breathing hard but steady. ”That’s what a year and more of genuine, deliberate effort actually looks like. Remember that shape, Arlen. Wherever you train next, whoever teaches you whatever comes after this, don’t let anyone convince you that raw talent alone got you here. It didn’t. This is earned, every piece of it.”

”I won’t forget,” Arlen said, and meant it entirely.

Garrett studied him a final, long moment, and then, uncharacteristically, pulled him into a brief, firm embrace — the first genuine physical warmth Arlen had ever received from the old warrior across their entire relationship.

”Go see the world properly,” Garrett said, echoing, without knowing it, the same words Eldrin had offered days earlier. ”And if you ever find yourself facing something that makes you doubt everything I’ve taught you, remember this: technique matters. Discipline matters. But the thing that’s actually carried you this far, more than either of those, is the fact that you never once stopped caring about doing it properly, even when doing it properly was harder than simply doing it fast.”

Arlen left the training yard that afternoon with the accumulated weight of the conversation settling into him slowly, piece by piece, and found himself, walking back through Greyhaven’s familiar streets, already turning over exactly how he intended to spend whatever days remained before his actual departure — Lyra and Garrick’s paperwork, the slums he’d grown up in, the friends who still needed proper, deliberate goodbyes.

The decision was made now. Properly, formally made. What remained was simply the practical work of closing this Chapter carefully, the way he’d tried to close every Chapter of this remarkable life — with proper attention, proper gratitude, and no unnecessary haste.

He stopped once, near the edge of the market square, and looked back toward the training yard he’d just left, Garrett’s words still settling into him. Technique matters. Discipline matters. But the thing that’s actually carried you this far is that you never stopped caring about doing it properly.

He’d remember that. Wherever he ended up next.
