Reborn as an Adventurer: I Gain a Skill From Every Monster I Eat

Chapter 123: Chapter 123 — A Town Between Roads

The receptionist looked up with genuine surprise when Arlen walked back through Millhaven’s guild outpost doors the following afternoon.

”Didn’t expect to see you again so soon,” she said. ”Thought you’d be well on your way to the capital by now.”

”Wanted to report properly on the hunt before I left,” Arlen said, setting his pack down and retrieving the carefully wrapped sample of Thornback Elk plating he’d salvaged. ”Confirmed kill, though it proved considerably more dangerous than the bestiary notes suggested.”

She accepted the plating sample with evident interest, turning it over carefully. ”Go on, then. I’ll want the full account.”

He walked her through the encounter methodically — the herd’s small size, the bull’s speed despite its armored bulk, the accurate but incomplete information about its plating’s weak points, and the two remaining elk’s mournful, non-aggressive reaction once the bull had fallen.

”That last detail’s worth flagging properly,” the receptionist said, making careful notes as he spoke. ”Most bestiary entries assume herds respond aggressively to a fallen bull. If they actually grieve rather than retaliate, that changes the risk calculation for anyone hunting them going forward — safer than the current notes suggest, provided a hunter isn’t careless enough to draw the whole herd’s initial attention.”

”I nearly wasn’t careful enough myself,” Arlen admitted. ”The bull’s speed caught me off guard more than once.”

”I’ll update the danger rating to reflect that too. Confirmed Rank 4, aggressive when threatened, faster than typical for its bulk.” She finished her notes and glanced up at him with genuine appreciation. ”This is good, thorough work. Wish more traveling adventurers bothered reporting properly rather than just collecting their trophy and moving on.”

”Feels like the least I can do, passing through territory that isn’t mine to simply take from without giving something back.”

She studied him a moment, something warmer entering her professional demeanor. ”You’ll do well in Aurenholt, I think, if that attitude holds. Capital archive values exactly this kind of careful documentation, from what I understand of how it operates.”

He thanked her, collected a modest guild credit for the confirmed report, and made his way back out into Millhaven’s busy market square one final time, purchasing a fresh supply of riverbread and a portion of Grosk’s smoked fish for the road ahead before finally setting his course north and east, toward the next proper leg of his journey.

The terrain shifted gradually over the following days, Millhaven’s cultivated river valley giving way to broader, more varied countryside — orchards in places, open grazing land in others, small farming hamlets too modest to warrant their own guild presence but bustling enough with their own local rhythm that Arlen found himself stopping more than once simply to watch and listen.

He reached the town of Corvale on his eighteenth day out from Greyhaven, a settlement considerably larger than Millhaven, built along the convergence of two separate trade roads, and understood immediately, walking through streets crowded with merchant caravans and travelers moving in every direction, that he’d finally reached the kind of proper crossroads town that connected the wider kingdom’s separate regions together.

”Busy place,” he observed to an innkeeper he’d stopped to ask directions from, watching a considerable line of wagons queued near the town’s central marketplace.

”Corvale sits right where the northern trade road meets the Aurenholt highway,” the innkeeper explained, a weathered woman with the easy, practiced patience of someone accustomed to travelers passing through in large numbers. ”Everything moving toward the capital from the north or east funnels through here eventually. Gets busier the closer you are to harvest season, and closer still whenever the capital’s got some new project drawing extra trade.”

”Is that common? New projects, drawing extra trade?”

”More than you’d think, this past year or two.” The innkeeper’s expression carried a note of genuine, if distant, interest in kingdom-level politics that Arlen found himself curious about. ”Word is the crown’s been investing heavily in expanding the Sundered Depths’ outer access points — more adventurers pushing deeper than ever before, which means more merchants supplying them, which means more traffic through towns like mine.”

Arlen felt a familiar flicker of interest at the mention of the Depths, the same curiosity Kess had first sparked back in Greyhaven. ”Do you know much about it? The Depths, I mean.”

”Only what travelers pass along secondhand. Bottomless, or close enough that nobody’s confirmed otherwise. Guild’s built half its reputation around it, from what I understand — adventurers from every corner of the kingdom eventually make their way there, one way or another.” She studied him with mild curiosity. ”You headed that way yourself?”

”Eventually. Taking my time about it.”

”Most people rush toward Aurenholt like it’ll disappear if they don’t hurry.” The innkeeper’s weathered face creased into an approving smile. ”Good on you, taking the slower road. This kingdom’s got more worth seeing than most travelers bother noticing.”

He found a proper meal that evening at a tavern near Corvale’s central square, and struck up conversation with a merchant seated nearby, a heavyset man traveling south from territory Arlen had never heard properly named before.

”You’re from the Ashen Frontier,” the merchant observed, noting something about Arlen’s accent or bearing. ”Long way from home.”

”Heading to Aurenholt. What about you? Where’s your trade route run?”

”South and east, mostly. Spice routes, out past the kingdom’s southern border into territory that doesn’t answer to Valcrest’s crown at all.” The merchant’s expression carried a note of genuine unease beneath his otherwise easy manner. ”Getting harder to run that route safely, these past two years. Some kind of succession dispute tearing through one of the southern kingdoms — Doraleth, if the name means anything to you.”

”It doesn’t,” Arlen admitted. ”I don’t know much about anything beyond Valcrest’s own borders yet.”

”Consider yourself fortunate, then. Doraleth’s business is properly none of Valcrest’s concern, far as the crown’s officially stated position goes, but it’s made my trade route considerably more dangerous regardless. Bandits taking advantage of the chaos, legitimate patrols stretched thin trying to manage the border traffic.” The merchant shook his head. ”Not my problem to solve. Just makes for a longer, more careful journey than it used to be.”

Arlen turned the conversation over with genuine interest, recognizing in it exactly the kind of distant, unresolved political thread Sarai had first mentioned back in Ashford’s Crossing — the same vague, ominous shape of trouble stirring somewhere beyond the edges of anything he’d personally experienced.

Doraleth, he thought, filing the name away carefully. Another piece of a pattern I still don’t understand. Maybe it matters eventually. Maybe it never touches anything I’m actually part of. Either way, worth remembering.

He spent the remainder of the evening simply listening to Corvale’s crowded tavern’s layered conversation, adventurers and merchants and ordinary travelers all trading news and rumor in the easy, unguarded way people did when they assumed nobody important was actually paying attention, and found himself, by the night’s end, genuinely grateful for the accumulated texture of everything he’d absorbed since leaving Greyhaven — not just food and creatures and new races, but the slow, patient shape of an entire kingdom’s worth of politics and trade and distant trouble, revealing itself gradually to anyone willing to actually listen.

He wrote in his journal before finally settling in for the night, the entry carrying a broader, more outward-looking quality than his earlier, more personally focused reflections.

Corvale. A proper crossroads town, considerably busier than Millhaven, sitting at the convergence of the northern trade road and the Aurenholt highway itself. Word of the crown investing in the Sundered Depths’ access points — more traffic, more trade, more adventurers pushing deeper than ever.

And a name worth remembering: Doraleth. A southern kingdom outside Valcrest’s borders, apparently tearing itself apart over some succession dispute, disrupting trade routes and drawing bandits into the resulting chaos. I don’t know if it matters. I intend to remember it regardless.

Eighteen days out now. Getting closer, I think, though the road still holds considerably more distance than I’ve already covered. I find myself in no particular hurry to close that gap.

He closed the journal, Corvale’s crowded evening noise still audible through his window, and settled in for a night’s proper rest before continuing the long, unhurried road still stretching out ahead of him.
