Reborn as an Adventurer: I Gain a Skill From Every Monster I Eat

Chapter 122: Chapter 122 — New Ability

He moved the moment the bull’s flank turned fully toward him, closing the distance in a burst of Storm Step that carried him well past the range any ordinary approach would have allowed, sword already angling low toward the soft, sparsely armored stretch along its belly.

The bull reacted faster than he expected.

It pivoted with startling speed for something so heavily built, and his strike, meant to land clean beneath its exposed flank, instead caught glancing against the edge of its plating as it turned. The blade skittered off with a jarring impact that traveled up through his arm, and he barely managed to throw himself clear as the creature’s massive head swung around, antlers scraping the air where he’d stood a heartbeat earlier.

”Fast for something wearing that much armor,” he muttered, rolling to his feet, already repositioning.

The bull bellowed, a deep, resonant sound that carried across the quarry, and Arlen understood immediately what it meant — the two companions he’d left grazing further up the ridge were now, very likely, aware that their bull had encountered trouble.

Faster now, then, he thought, circling to keep the animal’s blind side favored. Before the others decide to get involved.

It charged, lowering its head, and Arlen threw himself sideways rather than meet the rush directly, Aura Ward gathering along his blade in case the maneuver failed to clear him entirely. It didn’t fully fail — a glancing blow from the creature’s shoulder still caught him hard enough to stagger his balance, though the technique absorbed enough of the impact that he stayed upright, gasping, rather than going down.

He drove Edgeline Strike into the bull’s exposed flank as it thundered past, Aura flaring along the blade, and felt the strike connect properly this time — a real wound, though the plating’s thickness even along the flank blunted much of what should have been a decisive cut.

The bull wheeled around, faster than its bulk should have allowed, and Arlen found himself backpedaling as it pressed the advantage, head low, antlers sweeping in wide, dangerous arcs that forced him to keep retreating rather than find any clean opening.

This isn’t working the way I planned, he thought, ducking beneath another sweeping strike, his own breathing already growing ragged with the effort of sustained evasion. Belly’s the target, but it’s not giving me the angle.

He called on Storm Step again, using the burst not to close distance this time but to circle wide, putting himself briefly behind the creature’s flank where its own bulk limited how quickly it could reorient. It worked — barely — buying him the half-second he needed to drive his blade upward at an angle, aiming beneath the plating’s lower edge toward the softer hide along its belly.

The strike connected properly, and the bull’s bellow this time carried genuine pain rather than simple territorial warning. It staggered, favoring one side, and Arlen pressed the opening immediately, driving a second strike into the same widening wound before the creature could recover its balance.

Distant hoofbeats reached him then, fast and approaching — the other two elk, drawn by the sound of their bull’s distress, closing in across the ridge with alarming speed.

Two more. I don’t have time to finish this carefully.

He made a decision fast, the same rapid, cold calculation that had carried him through every genuinely desperate fight since Millbrook. He gathered Ember Touch alongside his blade, heat building fast and hot, and drove the combined strike directly into the bull’s already-wounded flank with everything he had left in reserve.

The bull’s plating, weakened by the accumulated damage and now scorched by concentrated heat, finally gave way properly, the strike driving deep enough to end the engagement outright. The creature’s legs buckled, and it went down hard, the quarry’s stone ground shuddering faintly with the impact.

Arlen didn’t have time to properly register the kill before the other two elk arrived, and he understood immediately, watching them slow at the sight of their fallen bull rather than continuing their charge, that this was a moment demanding careful stillness rather than further aggression.

He stood motionless, sword lowered but ready, and watched the two remaining animals circle the fallen bull with what looked, unmistakably, like genuine distress — nudging at its still form, calling out in low, mournful tones that carried none of the earlier bellow’s aggression.

They’re not going to press an attack, he realized, watching them carefully. This isn’t a coordinated pack. Just grief.

He backed away slowly, giving the herd proper space, and found himself, once he’d put a safe distance between himself and the scene, genuinely unsettled by what he’d just witnessed — not regret exactly, but a sober, complicated weight he hadn’t quite anticipated feeling over a hunted, territorial creature.

He waited until the two elk finally moved off, still calling mournfully as they retreated further up the ridge, before returning to properly harvest what he needed from the fallen bull — a portion of meat, carefully wrapped, and a sample of the plating itself, curious whether it might prove useful material even without any hidden power attached to it.

He made a quiet, careful camp a safe distance from the quarry that evening, and prepared the meat with unusual solemnity, seasoning it lightly with the last of Widow Hallon’s hillroot rather than experimenting freely the way he usually did with new ingredients.

Tougher than I expected, given how much fighting it took just to reach it, he noted, working through the meat as it cooked. Rich, though. Gamey, but not unpleasant.

He ate slowly, and the warmth arrived partway through his second helping, familiar now across eight previous encounters, though this time it gathered differently — not sharp or sudden, but spreading outward from his chest in a slow, settling wave that felt, more than anything, like something anchoring itself permanently into place rather than simply arriving.

A name surfaced in his mind, certain and whole.

Bonebark Resilience.

He sat with the sensation a long while, testing the edges of understanding that came bundled with the name — not an active technique to call upon, but something already present, already woven into him. He pressed his own forearm experimentally, curious, and felt nothing different beneath his fingers, no visible change to his skin or muscle.

He tested it properly the following morning, before breaking camp, striking his own forearm carefully with the flat of his blade — cautious at first, then with steadily increasing force, and found, with genuine astonishment, that what should have raised an angry welt barely registered at all, the impact absorbed by something beneath his skin that hadn’t been there the day before.

He pressed further, testing against a fallen branch, then a solid strike against the quarry’s stone wall, each test more aggressive than the last, and found the same result holding consistently — damage that should have hurt considerably more simply didn’t, some passive, permanent toughening settled into him the way the elk’s own plating had settled into its hide over a lifetime of growth.

A passive defense, he thought, turning the discovery over with careful, methodical attention. Not something I call on. Just something I am, now, all the time.

He thought back through his other eight abilities, each one requiring conscious effort to activate — Ember Touch’s heat, Storm Step’s burst, even Earthen Grip’s sensing demanding some deliberate attention to properly engage. This felt entirely different, a quiet, constant presence rather than a tool reached for in the moment.

Fills a real gap, he decided, testing his forearm once more against the stone wall, genuinely delighted by the lack of pain that should have accompanied the strike. Everything else I have, I have to choose to use. This is simply there, whether I remember it or not.

He wrote at length in his journal once he’d properly finished testing the ability’s limits, the entry carrying the same careful, methodical documentation he brought to every significant discovery.

Ninth ability. Bonebark Resilience — passive, always-active damage resistance, unlike anything else I’ve gained so far. Tested it against my own blade, against stone, against a solid fallen branch. Damage that should hurt simply doesn’t, or doesn’t nearly as much as it should.

The hunt itself was harder than I expected — the bull was faster and more dangerous than the guild’s information properly conveyed, and I very nearly failed to finish it before the rest of its small herd arrived. Watching them grieve afterward sat with me more than I anticipated it would. I don’t regret the hunt. I simply understand, now, a little more clearly, exactly what it costs the world every time I take something from it.

Nine abilities now. I find myself wondering, more seriously than before, exactly how many more this journey might still have waiting for me — and what it will mean, eventually, to carry this many secrets forward into wherever I finally settle.

He closed the journal, the quarry’s pale stone walls catching the early morning light, and broke camp shortly after, already turning his thoughts back toward the road ahead — Millhaven behind him now, Aurenholt still weeks distant, and a whole unexplored kingdom still waiting to reveal exactly how much further this remarkable, accumulating gift still had left to carry him.
