Reborn as an Adventurer: I Gain a Skill From Every Monster I Eat

Chapter 128: Chapter 128 — A City Before the Capital

Marrowgate announced itself long before the gate did.

Arlen felt it first in the road itself — traffic thickening from a handful of wagons to a steady, shoulder-to-shoulder procession, carts loaded with grain and timber and bolts of dyed cloth, drovers calling out to each other in accents he didn’t recognize. By the time the walls actually rose up ahead of him, pale stone easily three times the height of Greyhaven’s own, he was walking in the middle of a crowd rather than along an open road, and found himself, for the first time since Ashford’s Crossing, genuinely swept along by the sheer press of other people’s momentum.

The gate itself dwarfed anything he remembered from home — wide enough for four wagons abreast, guards stationed not in pairs but in proper squads, checking papers and cargo with brisk, practiced efficiency. Nobody stopped Arlen beyond a cursory glance at his guild badge.

”Adventurer, traveling alone,” one guard noted, more to her partner than to him. ”Capital-bound?”

”Eventually,” Arlen said, the same answer he’d given the wagon guard days earlier.

”Mind the canal district after dark. Otherwise, welcome to Marrowgate.”

He passed through the gate and stopped just inside it, letting the crowd break around him the way water breaks around a stone, simply looking.

He’d expected something like Ashford’s Crossing, scaled up. What he found instead was something considerably stranger and more layered — streets that wound rather than ran straight, buildings stacked three and four stories with the upper floors leaning out over the lower in a way that turned the narrower lanes into tunnels of shadow even at midday, and everywhere, threaded through all of it, more variety of face and form than he’d seen gathered in one place in his entire life.

A pair of halflings worked a fruit stall near the gate, quick-handed and cheerful, calling out prices in a rapid, musical cadence to a queue of customers twice their height. One of them tossed him a small, unfamiliar orange fruit without breaking her patter.

”Sunpear,” she called over the noise. ”Half-copper if you like it, nothing if you don’t.”

He bit into it cautiously, and found the flavor bright and faintly floral, unlike anything he’d tasted since leaving Greyhaven. He paid the half-copper, and the halfling grinned, already turning back to her next customer before he’d finished thanking her.

Further in, a broad-shouldered orc directed traffic at a busy intersection with nothing but calm hand signals and an occasional bellowed word, cart drivers deferring to him without complaint. When a young carter misjudged a turn and nearly clipped a passing beastkin child, the orc’s bellow stopped the whole intersection cold, and he crossed to check on the child himself, gentle as anything, before waving traffic on again.

Beastkin moved through the crowd in a variety he hadn’t properly appreciated from Millhaven’s more modest sampling — a catkin woman balancing a tray of pastries with effortless grace, ears flicking toward every passing conversation; a pair of foxkin children weaving between adult legs in some private game, tails streaming behind them; a tall, antlered figure Arlen guessed was deerkin, moving through the crowd with unhurried dignity. Near a cooper’s stall, a heavyset beastkin with the low, sturdy build of what looked like boarkin stock hauled barrels two at a time, laughing at something a human apprentice had said.

He found the canal district by early afternoon — a network of wide, slow-moving waterways cutting through the city’s lower quarter, arched footbridges connecting streets that would otherwise have required a considerable detour. He stopped at the rail of one such bridge, watching the traffic below — flat cargo barges, smaller passenger skiffs poled along by boatmen who called out to each other with the easy familiarity of people who worked the same water every day.

It was there, leaning against the worn stone rail, that he caught his first proper glimpse of a merfolk trader, surfacing briefly alongside a barge to exchange something with the boatman above — a quick, efficient transaction, coin passed down, a sealed package passed up, before the trader vanished back beneath the canal’s murky green surface with barely a ripple to mark the exchange. Moments later, a second merfolk head broke the surface further along, pausing to exchange a few words with a group of dockside children before diving again.

”First time seeing one?” asked a voice beside him.

Arlen turned to find an elderly halfling woman had settled at the rail a few feet away.

”First time,” he admitted. ”I didn’t realize the canals ran deep enough.”

”Deep enough for their purposes. They don’t live here, mind — just trade through, mostly goods that move easier by water than by cart. River folk, coastal folk, sometimes further out than that. Nobody in Marrowgate asks too closely.” She glanced at him. ”You’re not from around here.”

”Ashen Frontier, originally. Heading to the capital, eventually.”

”Long way, taking the scenic route by the sound of that ’eventually.’” She smiled, revealing a gap where a tooth had once been. ”Name’s Pell, if you’re the sort who likes to know who’s talking your ear off.”

”Arlen.”

”Well, Arlen, if you’re wandering with no particular aim, the dye-works two streets that way are worth a look. Dwarven-run, mostly, though you’ll find a bit of everyone there this time of year.” She pushed off the rail with a small grunt. ”Or don’t. Free advice is worth exactly what you paid for it.”

He took her suggestion, and found the dye-works exactly as promised — a cluster of workshops built around a central courtyard, vats of color steaming in the open air, the smell sharp and mineral, though the finished cloth hanging to dry along the courtyard’s edges made up for it in sheer, startling color. A dwarven woman with dye-stained forearms up to the elbow argued cheerfully with a human buyer over the price of a bolt of deep crimson, while nearby, two goblins — smaller and quicker than he’d expected, dressed in practical aprons — sorted spools of thread with quick, nimble fingers.

He crossed paths with Pell again near the courtyard’s edge, apparently finished with whatever errand had brought her there too.

”You’ll want proper lodging tonight,” she said, ”rather than wherever you’ve been planning to camp. Hettie runs a clean room by the canal and doesn’t overcharge travelers. Tell her I sent you.”

He thanked her and continued on, following the general pull of the crowd toward what looked like a temple district ahead — domed roofs, sharp angular spires, one squat structure ringed entirely in still, reflective water.

It was in the narrow street connecting the two quarters that he noticed a woman moving through the shaded lane, her skin a deep, genuine brown-black, her ears longer and more sharply pointed than any elf’s he’d seen before. Nobody around her paid her any particular mind — one more face among the crowd’s considerable variety — and Arlen did the same, filing the sighting away as simply one more new thing this city had shown him.

Dark elf, he thought, continuing on. Something to ask about, eventually, if the chance comes up properly.

By the time he’d worked his way back toward the canal district, dusk had properly settled over Marrowgate, lanterns kindling along the bridges one by one. He found Hettie’s inn without much trouble, exactly where Pell had described it — a narrow building near the canal’s edge, run by a broad, cheerful woman who set a bowl in front of him before he’d even properly asked for a room.

”Eat first,” she said. ”Room’s yours after.”

He ate gratefully, the inn’s evening business settling into an easy, familiar rhythm around him, and turned in early that night with the whole city still only partially explored.
