Reborn as an Adventurer: I Gain a Skill From Every Monster I Eat

Chapter 136: Chapter 136 — What Stage

Master Corwin Ashgrave’s classroom occupied a modest, unglamorous corner of the guild hall’s second floor — no banners, no ceremony, simply a plain room with rows of benches and a worn chalkboard, considerably less imposing than anywhere else Arlen had wandered through in his first days at the capital.

He’d expected, walking in, something closer to a lecture hall crowded with dozens of new arrivals. Instead he found perhaps a dozen others scattered across the benches, most of them younger than him, a few noticeably older, all wearing the same faint, uncertain look of people about to be told something they suspected they should already know.

Corwin himself was old in the particular, weathered way that made his exact age difficult to guess — silver-haired, broad through the shoulders despite his years, moving with an economy that suggested decades of discipline rather than any diminished capacity. He didn’t introduce himself with any particular warmth, simply set a worn wooden staff against the wall and surveyed the room with the flat, assessing patience of a man who’d delivered this exact lecture more times than he cared to count.

”Realm theory,” he said, without preamble. ”Some of you already understand the basics. Most of you don’t, whatever your rank suggests. We’ll start from the beginning regardless, because I’ve learned the hard way that skipping ahead just means answering the same questions twice.”

He worked through it methodically — the Power Realm ladder, twelve major tiers from Awakened through Eternal, each one divided further into Early, Middle, and Peak stages. Arlen listened with the same careful attention he gave anything genuinely new, filing away the shape of it even as a familiar unease settled beneath his ribs.

”Every genuine breakthrough requires three things,” Corwin continued, chalk scratching against the board. ”Foundation — your body and control sufficient to hold more. Understanding — a real, internalized grasp of what your power actually does, not just how to swing it. And the breakthrough itself, where that understanding integrates properly.” He tapped the board. ”Miss any one of the three, and you don’t advance. Doesn’t matter how many monsters you’ve killed getting there.”

A young woman near the front raised a hand. ”How do you know which stage you’re actually at?”

”Self-assessment, mostly, once you understand what to look for. Reserve capacity. Control under strain. How efficiently your power actually translates into effect rather than simply how much of it you can produce.” Corwin’s gaze swept the room, and settled, for a moment longer than seemed accidental, on Arlen. ”Confirmed Awakened adventurers transferring in from smaller branches sometimes never learn to ask the question at all. Frontier guilds don’t always teach it properly — too busy keeping people alive to worry about refining what they’ve already got.”

Arlen felt the observation land with more weight than its casual delivery suggested, though Corwin moved on without singling him out further, continuing through the lecture’s remaining structure — how monster rank and adventurer realm interacted loosely rather than directly, why raw power without understanding eventually plateaued no matter how much a person trained.

The lecture ran the better part of two hours, and Corwin dismissed the group with the same flat efficiency he’d begun with, though he lingered near the door as the benches emptied, and caught Arlen’s eye before he could slip past.

”You’re the Greyhaven transfer,” Corwin said. Not quite a question.

”I am.”

”Confirmed Awakened, per your file. No realm designation logged anywhere.” Corwin studied him with the same weathered, unhurried patience he’d shown the whole class, though sharper now, more personal. ”How long since you Awakened?”

Arlen did the math quickly, the familiar careful arithmetic he applied to most uncomfortable questions. ”Over a year now. A year and some months, closer to it, counting the road here.”

Something shifted behind Corwin’s expression — not quite surprise, but close to it. ”And nobody’s walked you through a realm assessment in all that time.”

”Not properly, no. I trained under an Aura instructor — Garrett Vane, in Greyhaven. Learned technique, built foundation. Nobody ever mentioned stages.”

”That’s a considerable stretch of time.” Corwin said it slowly, turning the figure over the way a craftsman might turn over a flawed piece of work. ”You understand that’s unusual. Most Awakened adventurers with proper instruction reach at least Peak well within their first year, sometimes considerably sooner, if the foundation work’s solid.”

”I didn’t know there was a ladder to climb,” Arlen admitted. ”I thought Awakened was simply what I was. A fixed thing, not a stage.”

Corwin was quiet a moment, studying him with an intensity that made Arlen genuinely uncertain what conclusion the old instructor was working toward. ”That’s not entirely your fault,” he said finally. ”Frontier branches focus on survival, not refinement — can’t blame a guild for prioritizing that, given the stakes. But it does mean you’ve spent well over a year training with genuine discipline and never once attempted the single most important step in your own progression.” He picked his staff back up from where he’d left it against the wall. ”You don’t even know what stage you’re in, do you. Early, Middle, Peak. No idea.”

”No,” Arlen said, and found the admission landed heavier than he expected, standing there in the emptying classroom.

”We’ll find out properly, before this orientation’s finished,” Corwin said. ”I don’t say that as reassurance. This long stalled at a single realm without proper instruction isn’t nothing — it’s foundation you’ve built without ever testing its actual depth. Could mean you’re sitting comfortably in Early, still years from a genuine breakthrough. Could mean you’re sitting on something considerably closer to Peak than you’d guess, simply because nobody ever asked you to look.”

”Which do you think it is?”

Corwin studied him a long moment, the same flat, assessing patience from earlier now turned fully, deliberately on him alone. ”I don’t guess,” he said. ”I’ll want a proper assessment session, one on one, before I say anything definite. Come find me after tomorrow’s dungeon safety briefing. We’ll settle it properly then.”

He left without further ceremony, staff tapping once against the floor as he went, and Arlen stood alone in the emptied classroom a while longer, turning over the strange, unsettling shape of what he’d just learned — well over a year, built entirely on instinct and Garrett’s patient, foundational training, and never once, in all that time, had he thought to ask the single question that apparently mattered most here.

I don’t even know what stage I’m in, he thought, the words carrying a weight he hadn’t expected from something so simple. After everything. After Millbrook, the boundary, the Broodmother. I never once asked.

He gathered his things and made his way back toward the Foxglove as the afternoon light began to fade, the pamphlet from Talia’s counter still only half-read in his pack, and found himself, walking the capital’s crowded streets with considerably less of the morning’s easy wonder, genuinely curious — and more than a little apprehensive — about exactly what tomorrow’s assessment would finally reveal.
