Reborn as an Adventurer: I Gain a Skill From Every Monster I Eat

Chapter 106: Chapter 106 — Deeper Still

Garrick’s condition improved enough by the third morning that Priya finally cleared him for light activity, though she remained firm about limiting anything approaching real exertion, and the party resumed their investigation of the site with a renewed sense of purpose now that the immediate danger to his life had passed.

”The second foundation Ilyana identified,” Maren said, gathering the group near the smaller structure they’d only partially mapped the previous day. ”I’d like to examine it properly before we conclude our work here.”

They approached it carefully, the pathway connecting the two structures now fully exposed after the previous day’s clearing work — a narrow, deliberately paved walkway, its stones fitted with a precision that spoke of genuine architectural skill rather than crude, hurried construction.

”Whoever built this took real care,” Osric observed, studying the pathway’s construction. ”This isn’t the work of desperate people throwing something together in haste. This was planned.”

The smaller structure proved, once properly cleared, to be considerably more intact than the main building — a squat, single-chamber space, its walls thicker and better preserved, as though it had been specifically designed to withstand whatever eventually happened here.

”A vault, maybe,” Kess suggested, running her clawed fingers along the thick stonework. ”Or a storage chamber of some kind.”

They cleared the entrance carefully, Osric checking for any lingering magical hazards before allowing the party to proceed, and found the interior, once they’d finally broken through centuries of accumulated debris, considerably more preserved than anything else the site had offered.

”Shelving,” Maren said, her voice carrying quiet astonishment as she surveyed the chamber’s interior. ”Look at this. Deliberate storage, not just a sealed room.”

The shelves themselves had long since crumbled to little more than dust and fragments, but scattered across the chamber’s floor lay the remains of what they’d once held — more of the corroded metal fragments Kess had found the previous day, several sealed containers whose contents had long since degraded beyond recognition, and, tucked into a protected alcove near the chamber’s rear, something that made Arlen’s breath catch when he finally saw it clearly.

”That’s a book,” he said, kneeling carefully beside it.

It wasn’t, strictly, in any condition to be called a book any longer — its pages had fused together into a solid, brittle mass, the leather binding crumbling at the edges — but the shape was unmistakable, and Osric knelt beside it with the same careful, reverent attention Arlen remembered Eldrin bringing to every genuine discovery.

”Don’t touch it directly,” Osric warned. ”Whatever preserved it this long, disturbing it carelessly could destroy whatever information it still holds. This needs proper handling — careful stabilization before anyone attempts to actually examine the contents.”

Maren knelt beside it as well, studying the fused mass with focused, professional attention. ”I can attempt a minor preservation working. Won’t restore it to anything readable, but it might prevent further decay until we can get it somewhere with proper resources.”

She worked carefully, a faint golden light gathering around the ruined book, and Arlen watched, fascinated, as the brittle, crumbling edges seemed to settle, stabilize, the ongoing decay visibly halting under her careful attention.

”That’s the best I can offer here,” she said finally, sitting back with evident effort. ”Proper restoration will need considerably more resources than we have available in the field.”

They continued searching the chamber’s remains through the morning, uncovering additional fragments — more corroded metal pieces, what might once have been some kind of measuring or recording instrument, its purpose entirely unclear now given its ruined state, and scattered pieces of what Osric identified as likely writing implements.

”This was a place of genuine study,” he said, surveying the accumulated evidence. ”Not simply containment. Someone was documenting whatever happened here, actively, deliberately, the way a scholar or researcher might work.”

”Which raises an uncomfortable question,” Ilyana said, studying the chamber with a warrior’s practical unease rather than scholarly excitement. ”Documenting what, exactly? What were they actually doing here, that required this much careful, sustained study?”

Nobody had a ready answer, and the question settled uncomfortably over the gathered party.

Arlen found himself, examining a particularly well-preserved fragment of the ruined measuring instrument, turning over the implications with growing unease. ”Whatever this place was, it wasn’t simply reacting to some existing danger. It feels more like—”

”Like they were creating something,” Maren finished quietly, when he trailed off. ”Or attempting to.”

The words settled into the chamber with a weight Arlen felt in his chest, the accumulated evidence of the past two days suddenly arranging itself into a shape considerably more unsettling than simple ancient containment work.

”We should be careful about drawing conclusions too quickly,” Garrick said, his voice carrying its usual measured caution despite his own evident unease. ”We have fragments, not answers. Proper scholarship deserves better than hasty speculation.”

”Agreed,” Maren said. ”But I think it’s fair to say this site raises considerably more questions than it answers. Whatever we’ve found here deserves the most careful study my order and the capital archive can offer.”

They spent the remainder of the day carefully packaging everything salvageable — the ruined book, the metal fragments, the remains of the measuring instrument, Maren’s preservation work extending to each piece in turn to protect them for the journey home.

Arlen found himself, that evening, sitting apart from the main camp with Halvard, both of them turning over the day’s discoveries with quiet, unsettled reflection.

”I keep thinking about what Maren said,” Arlen admitted. ”That they might have been creating something, not just sealing it away.”

”If that’s true,” Halvard said, ”it changes everything about what we assumed this crisis actually was.”

”It does.” Arlen stared into the fire, the accumulated weight of the day settling heavily into his thoughts. ”I don’t know what to do with that, honestly. It feels like the kind of thing that matters far beyond just the Ashen Frontier.”

”Probably does,” Halvard agreed. ”Good thing you’re planning to see more of that wider world, then. Sounds like it might need someone paying proper attention.”

Arlen wrote at length in his journal that night, the day’s discoveries settling into careful, deliberate words despite his own uncertainty about what they actually meant.

A vault, carefully constructed, holding what appears to have been genuine research materials — a ruined book, a broken measuring instrument, scattered writing implements. This wasn’t simple ancient sealing work. Someone was documenting something here, deliberately, systematically, the way a scholar studies a genuine subject of inquiry.

Maren suggested they might have been creating something, rather than simply containing an existing danger. I don’t know if that’s true. I only know the possibility unsettles me more than almost anything else this expedition has revealed.

We’ll carry everything salvageable back to Greyhaven, and from there, presumably, toward proper scholarly attention — the capital archive, the Radiant Dawn’s own records, perhaps eventually Eldrin himself, whatever channel actually proves capable of piecing together what this all actually means.

I don’t think this mystery ends here. I suspect, if anything, today’s discoveries are only the very beginning of understanding what actually happened at this place, centuries ago, and what it might still mean for the wider world beyond this single, isolated site.

He closed the journal, the camp settling into its quiet, contemplative rest around him, and found himself, despite the day’s unsettling discoveries, genuinely grateful for the careful, patient work of uncovering truth — even truth that raised, for now, far more questions than it managed to properly answer.
