Back To The 80s: President's Doted Wife

Chapter 1874: Chapter 1876: The Older, the More Foolish

Cheng Su talked with Qi Taiguo on the phone for a full hour; if Qi Taiguo hadn’t reminded her, she probably still wouldn’t have wanted to hang up.

”Go to bed early, you only just got back today, plus the flight and all that,” Qi Taiguo said. ”Don’t worry too much, everything will be fine.”

”Mm.” Cheng Su reminded him, ”Hey, don’t let anything slip to Ning Ge about Song Jiaying and her son. I already promised Song Jiaying I wouldn’t.”

”Isn’t that a bit, I don’t know, not very aboveboard?” Qi Taiguo hesitated a little and said, ”Our son is involved too, and they’re our closest friends. Not telling him... it doesn’t feel very aboveboard.”

Cheng Su said, ”A person can’t go back on their word.”

Qi Taiguo laughed. ”You promised her you wouldn’t tell Ning Ge, but you didn’t promise her anything about other people.”

Cheng Su thought, that did seem to be the case.

But thinking about it more carefully, it still wasn’t right; breaking her word was not an option. So she said, ”Anyway, we can’t say anything. Besides, they’re all in the Capital now, they’re bound to run into each other. Just leave it alone.”

”Alright then!” Qi Taiguo said. ”I’ll keep the secret. Go to sleep!”

Cheng Su agreed, and the two of them exchanged a few kisses over the phone before finally hanging up.

After stretching, Cheng Su finally felt the wave of fatigue hit her. Her eyes drifted over and saw that her in-laws’ room still had the light on, and only then did she remember she hadn’t told Qi Taiguo about the ”good deed” his mother had pulled.

She glanced back at the phone, pressed her lips together, and let it go. In marriage, there was this thing about not badmouthing your mother-in-law in front of your husband. She’d wait until they were face-to-face; if Mother Qi dared to pull something like that again, she’d bring everything up then and make her feel even more ashamed.

Meanwhile, in the in-laws’ room, Father Qi was laying into Mother Qi.

”Don’t you dare act like you’re so wronged. With that stupid stunt you pulled, you still think you’re the victim? Let me tell you, this time I’m only saying this once. If you pull something that stupid again, I won’t be able to help you, and I won’t even have the face to try.”

Just thinking of that look in Cheng Su’s eyes made Father Qi’s face burn; he felt he’d lost all dignity.

”It’s not like I did something unforgivable...” Mother Qi muttered stubbornly.

”You still dare talk!” Father Qi raised his voice and said, ”In your heart you’ve always felt there was something wrong with Xiao Qi, otherwise would you go begging for that stupid Talisman Water? Good thing the kid is smart and doesn’t like to cry, otherwise who knows what big mess would’ve come of this!”

She’d gone with the people from the compound to pray to Buddha, saying it was also for her older sister’s peace and safety or whatever—fine, let her. Who knew this muddle-headed woman would pull something like this!

The older she got, the more muddle-headed she became!

”We’ve even eaten Guanyin clay before, so what’s Talisman Water compared to that? I’ve never heard of anyone getting hurt from drinking it!” Mother Qi grumbled, saying, ”She was the one making a big deal, looking at me like she was going to eat me alive. I was doing it for the child’s own good.”

”That kind of ’for the child’s own good’ of yours, you’d better not have it at all, so you don’t end up harming the child and making him suffer for nothing.” Father Qi said coldly, ”After the New Year, we’ll go back to our hometown and let her maternal grandmother come and help look after Xiao Qi.”

Otherwise, if something like this happened again, he truly wouldn’t know where to put his old face.

”No way!” Mother Qi blurted out immediately.

”It’s not up to you to say no,” Father Qi said. ”What you did is way too worrying. Even if our daughter-in-law doesn’t say anything, I don’t have the face to say we’re helping with childcare.”

”I—I won’t do it again, isn’t that enough?” Mother Qi cried out.

Father Qi let out a few cold laughs, lay down, and said, ”Honestly, why are you so set on being the one to look after him anyway? It’s been half a year—has Xiao Qi gotten close to you? Other than calling you ’Grandma,’ has he done anything affectionate with you? You’re just... unlikeable. If you don’t see people often, at least they can give you some face out of courtesy. But when they see you all the time, you just end up making people annoyed for nothing. Doesn’t that make you feel uncomfortable? I feel embarrassed for you just watching it!”

Mother Qi’s face burned, and she pressed her lips together.
