Officer! You Can Get a First-class Merit Awards Just by Eating Melon Seeds?

Chapter 7 My Never-Before-Seen Ex-Girlfriend?The apartment was rented by the original owner after joining the Municipal Bureau, close to work.

It was about seventy or eighty square meters, simply furnished—just a place to rest.

After all, having no parents, it didn’t really matter where he lived; he was used to drifting around in his previous life.

”Hello, Chen Mo.”

A voice came from the receiver, and Chen Mo snapped back to reality.

”I’m here. What’s up?”

After they broke up, the original body’s last memory of her was that she became a reporter after graduation and never contacted him again.

Being a reporter in 2002 was indeed a pretty good career path, as the internet was already making waves, and major web portals were scrambling for traffic and users, flocking to sensational social hot topics.

”I heard you’re working at the Muhe Municipal Bureau, right? Did you investigate a homicide case today? I’m working as a reporter now, and my boss assigned me to interview the lead investigator.”

”Can you introduce me to them?”

Interview?

The lead investigator probably meant Long Hao, but given Long Hao’s personality, he would definitely push it onto Chen Mo in the end, since Chen Mo took the credit for solving the case.

But he wasn’t interested in interviews; they weren’t as sweet as a melon point.

More importantly, he didn’t want to do her this favor.

According to his memories, the reason they broke up was that Sun Yuanyuan believed he would have no future, loved to meddle in things, and lacked ambition.

Did my melon-eating get in your way?

Breaking up was fine, but using these as excuses left him speechless.

Can’t a person have a hobby?

That was secondary; another reason Chen Mo didn’t want to help was this.

Sun Yuanyuan still believed that breaking up with him was the best decision she had ever made in her life.

Someone humiliated you and then asked for your help; Chen Mo wasn’t that spineless.

”You know, I just started, so I can’t help you.”

He didn’t waffle and refused directly.

In reality, given how much Long Hao valued him right now, it would just be a matter of one sentence.

He just didn’t want to help.

There was a long silence on Sun Yuanyuan’s end.

She seemed to be organizing her thoughts.

”I didn’t expect that even after half a year since graduation, you still haven’t moved on. While it certainly speaks to my charm, it also shows that you have a very poor ability to handle change. I’m still glad that I broke up with you.”

Hm?

Did I just get mocked?

Chen Mo rubbed his temples.

No, the original body was mocked.

But she was talking about me.

There were some things he had to ask on behalf of the original body.

”So, do you like me as a person, or do you like status?”

Actually, he already had the answer in his heart. In the 24 years before his transmigration, a saying was popular: ”If you have no money, why are you dating?”

Back then, money was already tied to love.

You don’t need money to love someone, but you need a lot of money to prove you love them.

”Is there a difference? I saw your future at a glance: you’re idle and lack ambition.”

Hearing Sun Yuanyuan’s mockery over the phone again, it would be a lie to say Chen Mo wasn’t angry.

”Oh? What is my future? Care to enlighten me, my dear Master Sun?”

Sensing Chen Mo’s sarcasm, Sun Yuanyuan dropped the act and spoke her true thoughts.

”You will never amount to anything in this life. If you’re lucky, you might get promoted to a First-class Police Superintendent before retirement; if you’re unlucky, you’ll be a Third-class Police Superintendent your whole life!”

Her words were quite vicious, because to get promoted from a police officer to a Third-class Police Superintendent only required enough time in service. Remaining a Third-class Police Superintendent meant having absolutely no achievements one’s entire life—the most incompetent of the incompetent!

”Is that so? Then let’s see who’s right, your prediction or mine!”

With his current strength, he wouldn’t stop at Third-class Police Superintendent.

—Beep, beep, beep.

The call ended, and Chen Mo’s expression darkened.

Although this was the original body’s ex-girlfriend, the target of the mockery was entirely him.

Even the most even-tempered person would be angry.

Let’s set a small goal first: get promoted.

I’ll let you know, you old woman, my future is limitless!

Go ahead and regret it!

He pulled his thoughts back.

[Detected that the host successfully ate a melon on ’The Evisceration Case’!]

[Task Rating]: D-rank.

[Task Reward]: 2000.

Only 2000? Chen Mo rubbed his chin.

After reading the introduction, he understood.

So, the less time it took to solve, the more points he would be rewarded.

Reasonable.

He pulled up his personal panel again.

[Host]: Chen Mo.

[Constitution]: 10 (Average person: 10).

[Strength]: 10 (Average person: 10).

[Skill]: Reasoning LV10 (0/3700) (Can be exchanged in the store using melon points).

”What should I upgrade?”

With his current melon points, upgrading Reasoning wasn’t enough.

Fortunately, the other skills were also quite good.

[Autopsy], [Micro-expressions], [Criminal Psychology], [Trace Investigation]...

These were all quite useful.

Autopsy could compensate for the current lack of forensic capabilities, Micro-expressions could be used for interrogation, Criminal Psychology could be used to step into the criminal’s perspective, and Trace Investigation could be used to examine crime scenes.

Each one was very important.

[You spent 1000 melon points to upgrade Autopsy, currently LV4!]

[You spent 1000 melon points to upgrade Criminal Psychology, currently LV4!]

In an instant, a total of 8 years of study memories for these two skills flooded into his mind.

This feeling was great, just like when he was in school; he could sleep at his desk without listening to the teacher, and after class, he could manually click to upgrade and know everything.

If others knew about this, they would be green with envy.

While others struggled to study and research, he just needed to click once.

Having spent it all in one go, Chen Mo couldn’t help but sigh in relief.

He had a bit of decision paralysis and tended to struggle when buying things.

Just as he was about to close the panel and go to sleep, a ball of light in the bottom right corner of the panel kept flashing.

He subconsciously clicked on it.

[Congratulations to the host for successfully solving a case, unlocking the ’Initial Edge’ achievement, and rewarding a double melon-eating card (3 days)!]

Chen Mo: ???

The melon-eating system had an achievement function? He couldn’t blame himself; when he transmigrated, he was on a police car and really didn’t have time to look.

The meaning of the double melon-eating card was easy to understand: all melon points obtained within three days would be doubled.

This thing is great!

It was so user-friendly; it knew exactly what he was lacking and provided it.

Thumbs up.

As a criminal police officer, there were plenty of cases, and with his strength, maxing out the double card wouldn’t be a problem.

Pure profit!

As his head hit the pillow and he prepared to sleep.

A voice rang in his mind once again.

Not letting him sleep?

[Triggered a betting agreement!]

[Task Requirements]: Eat melons on seven D-rank or higher cases within seven days.

[Task Reward]: 20000 melon points, 2 Skill Critical Hit Cards, (with a probability of obtaining Hyenas Nose).

[Accept?]: (No penalty for refusal; failure deducts 1000 melon points; next trigger is in seven days.)

This...

Only 1000 deducted for failure?

20000 if he wins?

The system really gives good rewards!

The Hyenas Nose was great, belonging to the improvement of physical functions, but he really didn’t hold much hope.

He played plenty of gacha games in his past life; ”with a probability” meant 1 in 10,000.

Of course, it would be nice if he could get it.

Continuing to look down, 20,000 melon points were equivalent to him solving 7 or 8 D-rank cases.

Especially the Skill Critical Hit Card; that thing had an amazing effect.

Last time he used it, it directly crit Reasoning from LV3 to LV10, saving a lot of melon points.

Liked it.

Wanted it.

Moreover, this betting agreement was difficult for him, but the difficulty wasn’t so high that it was unacceptable.

The only troublesome point was that he couldn’t ensure he would encounter cases every day, especially cases that could be rated as D-rank.

Nothing in the world is difficult for one who sets their mind to it.

Accept. Anyway, he would only lose 1000 if he failed, and he would make a killing if he won.

[betting agreement active, countdown begins.]
