Chapter 3: The Bizarre Motive for the Crime.”Instructor Yang said the person who could help me was you!?”

After hanging up the phone, Long Hao kept watching the intersection.

When Xiao Liu stopped the car and he saw Chen Mo getting out of the passenger seat, his mind buzzed.

Chen Mo had been working at the police station for over half a year, and as the captain, he naturally had a clear understanding of his team members’ capabilities.

The other party definitely did not have the ability to help him.

However... what he didn’t know was that this Chen Mo was no longer the same Chen Mo as before.

”Surprised?”

Seeing the captain’s expression, Xiao Liu started clowning around on the side.

When leaving the Instructor’s office, he had pressed Brother Mo about what was going on, how he had suddenly seemed to become enlightened, and what on earth had happened!

Brother Mo hadn’t hidden anything either, saying profoundly, ’The three-year period has arrived,’ though he still hadn’t figured out what that meant even now.

”Surprised, yes, but even more so, shocked.”

Instructor Yang wouldn’t say Chen Mo could help him for no reason; something must have happened that he wasn’t aware of.

Since he had no leads at the moment, there was no harm in listening to Chen Mo’s thoughts on the case.

”Captain Long, please brief me on the situation.”

Chen Mo looked at the victim’s body that had just been carried out not far away and said.

”The victim’s name is Yang Ming, 30 years old, unmarried. According to our investigation, the day of the incident, the victim was drinking with three friends at the night market stall across the street. After they dispersed at 3:00 AM, they all went home.”

”And this place should be the primary crime scene. Judging from the injuries on the victim, the first knife wound stabbed the victim, and the second knife opened the stomach...”

”Afterwards, the victim’s genitals and both kidneys were taken by the perpetrator. It is clearly a premeditated crime; the perpetrator came specifically to take these two organs.”

On one hand, he was narrating it to Chen Mo, and on the other, he was reinforcing his own grasp of the clues. He didn’t feel there was anything inappropriate about a captain reporting the situation to a team member.

If Chen Mo could really solve the case, he would be overjoyed.

”Hmm, let me take a look at the body first.”

While Long Hao was narrating, he had already started putting on his protective suit.

The victim had been dead for two days. It had rained that day, followed by exposure to intense sun; the body was riddled with bacteria. If not cremated soon, it would quickly bloat into a ’giant appearance.’

He stepped forward and squatted down.

Yang Ming, the victim, had his eyes closed at the moment, with tiny maggots wriggling on his skin. The inside of his abdomen was bright red, and his ribs were clearly visible.

He didn’t feel any physiological reaction or fear, because when his Reasoning ability had been upgraded, a vast amount of information about similar cases had flooded his mind, and he was already used to it.

He didn’t understand Autopsy, but he could perform Reasoning and analysis on the perpetrator’s emotional state during the crime based on the current condition of the body.

Analyzing the emotional state during the crime was also an important condition for catching the perpetrator.

To give a simple example, if the victim had many knife wounds, all of which were fatal, then it was highly likely that the perpetrator was harboring hatred during the crime, which would point the direction for the subsequent investigation.

What he needed to do now was to find the perpetrator’s emotional state during the crime!

Excitement!

It was still the same result as his previous deduction!

The perpetrator was abnormally excited during the crime!

”Did you find anything?”

Long Hao also put on a protective suit and squatted down. He was eagerly waiting to hear something from Chen Mo, because he had no idea how to proceed with the investigation.

”The perpetrator was extremely excited during the crime. The wound on the kidney doesn’t look like it was cut out; it looks more like it was forcibly ripped out.”

Chen Mo examined the wound carefully.

Long Hao and the forensic doctor on the side both showed expressions of surprise.

Because before he arrived, everyone had already discussed this point.

The conclusion was the same as Chen Mo’s.

It wasn’t that Long Hao had intended to hide it, but rather that the vascular tissue connected to the kidneys was very messy, so saying it was cut out or ripped out would both be plausible.

”We had actually already guessed this point. Can you tell anything else?”

Long Hao’s tone carried a hint of expectation.

”These are the only clues on the body for now, but following this line of Reasoning, what is the perpetrator’s motive for taking the organs, and why were they so excited upon seeing the kidneys that they ripped them out directly?”

While throwing out the questions, his brain was also spinning rapidly.

These two questions were currently the obstacles blocking the police, and they had to be figured out.

”Is it possible that it’s human organ trafficking? The price of kidneys on the black market isn’t low, but this modus operandi is a bit strange...”

Still, as he said, organ traffickers wouldn’t be so blatant, nor would they dare to!

”The possibility is too small. If the kidneys were for trade, ripping them out would likely damage the organs. Likewise, the genitals cannot be transplanted, so it doesn’t make sense.”

He shook his head, rejecting this answer that even Long Hao himself was hesitant about.

At this moment, someone in the crowd said: ”Is it possible that it’s ’darkness under the lamp’—that the goal is actually the kidneys, and cutting off the genitals was just to confuse us?”

”Maybe all our denials right now were already anticipated by the criminal.”

This wasn’t impossible; it would be very easy to fake the act of ripping out the kidneys with brute force.

Long Hao also considered this possibility; perhaps it really was a diversion to make the police voluntarily rule out the suspects for them.

”I said, the possibility is very small. If they wanted to confuse our investigation, why not just dump the body in the wilderness?”

”Wouldn’t that be safer? What benefit is there for them to play mind games with us?”

With one sentence, Chen Mo directly ruled out the possibility of organ trafficking.

”Now we only need to think about why the perpetrator was so excited.”

”Besides selling for money, what else can this stuff be used for?”

The main function of the kidneys is to remove excess water and electrolytes from the body, as well as endocrine functions...

Relying solely on the function of the organ, it was impossible to determine why the perpetrator became excited upon seeing the kidneys.

He recalled a joke he had once seen on the internet.

There is a hundred-dollar bill on the ground; a billionaire would feel nothing upon seeing it, but a starving beggar would undoubtedly be very excited.

Lack!

The more one lacks something, the more one wants it!

In that case, it is highly likely that the perpetrator’s own kidneys have a defect, which ultimately led him to cut out the victim’s kidneys, and he only became excited and agitated upon seeing them.

”How is the technology for organ transplantation developing at the moment?”

Chen Mo turned his head to ask Long Hao, who was also deep in thought.

This question was a bit outside his expertise, so he immediately sent someone to check for relevant information.

”The victim’s kidneys must be very important to the perpetrator; this is the factor that led to the excitement.”

”Let’s add another piece of evidence: the perpetrator cutting off the victim’s genitals has actually given us a direction for our investigation—his own kidneys might have problems!”

Long Hao took a deep breath. The change in this kid, Chen Mo, was too drastic.

Suddenly, he seemed enlightened. Was he hit by an apple?

Even more outrageous was that his personality had also changed significantly from before.

In the past, he was very ordinary, had no outstanding qualities, and would never stand out, prioritizing a philosophy of ’seeking no merit, but hoping to avoid blame.’

But now, he was exuding confidence at every moment.

Let the captain see what you can do.

Complaining was one thing, but he couldn’t deny that Chen Mo’s train of thought was sound; it was well-reasoned and convincing enough to make him believe it.

In just a few minutes, the data on organ transplantation in 2002 was all retrieved.

The result was as expected: organ transplantation technology in this era was still a highly difficult surgery, and the number of people in the country capable of performing this procedure could be counted on one hand.

This naturally ruled out the possibility that the perpetrator cut out the victim’s to transplant them into himself.

”The perpetrator’s kidneys have problems. If he cut out someone else’s to transplant into himself, that would be understandable, but he lacks the technique, so even if he got them, they would be useless, right?”

This question was indeed baffling.

”There is, however, another method.”

Chen Mo pondered for a moment. He remembered that opposite Xinba Village was a night market street; when he arrived, he had smelled the aroma of barbecue wafting through the air.

”There is a folk saying: ’You are what you eat.’”

”You’ve all eaten grilled kidneys, right?”
