Chapter 92: Chapter 91: Being Deceived

”What’s the price?” Xiao Yi asked.

Listening to the Chief Steward before him, it seemed there were many benefits to becoming a Deacon. However, he still needed to ask for clarity.

”It’s simple,” the Chief Steward smiled. ”For this position of Deacon, you need to exchange 1500 Task Points.”

”1500 Task Points?” Xiao Yi inwardly nodded. No wonder the staff member earlier had stopped him.

In the Demon Hunting Hall, no matter what benefit you wanted to gain, Task Points were always the prerequisite.

”With due respect,” Xiao Yi went straight to the point, ”what do I get after becoming a Deacon?”

Task Points was no small sum; he had toiled for three months, sweeping through countless dens of bandits, completing fifty Fourth Level Tasks, just to gather these points.

For other ordinary Third-level Demon Hunters, it might take years to accumulate 1500 Task Points.

Although he currently didn’t have anything in particular he needed to exchange for, he couldn’t just let so many Task Points go for nothing.

The Chief Steward waved his hand and laughed, ”No harm, it’s natural to ask for clarity. As I’ve already told you, as a Deacon, honor, authority, and status are all within easy reach.”

”Yi Xiao, even though you’re wearing a mask, if I’m not perceiving this wrongly, you’re just 16 years old, correct?”

”Once you become a Deacon, you’ll be the youngest Deacon in the history of the Northern Mountain County Demon Hunting Hall—a feat unheard of in the past and worthy of being recorded in the annals of Demon Hunting Hall.”

”You tell me, isn’t this an enormous honor?”

To become a Deacon of the Demon Hunting Hall, there was only one path: to rely on one’s own abilities, complete tasks one by one, and accumulate enough Task Points to exchange.

In the history of Northern Mountain County, the earliest person to become a Deacon in the Demon Hunting Hall was a strikingly talented Martial Artist.

At just 18 years old, he became a Deacon, ascended to Chief Steward by 22, and by 30 his Cultivation was unmatched in Northern Mountain County, a legend in his own right.

Of course, in terms of becoming a Deacon in the Demon Hunting Hall, Xiao Yi was even earlier.

However, Xiao Yi responded with a wry smile.

Before he could say anything, the woman next to him already laughed softly, ”Chief Steward, Yi Xiao isn’t even dead yet; what’s the point of being recorded in history?”

Xiao Yi grinned as well, what use to him were such empty honors?

The Chief Steward glared at the woman, chastising, ”What do you know? The Demon Hunting Hall is the oldest power on the continent. To be recorded in its annals is an extraordinary honor—one that others can’t even beg for.”

After speaking, the Chief Steward looked towards Xiao Yi again, his smile brimming with meaning, ”Yi Xiao, wouldn’t you say so?”

Xiao Yi remained silent.

Seeing this, the Chief Steward continued, ”Yi Xiao, I sincerely hope that you’ll join the Demon Hunting Hall.”

”A Deacon is different from ordinary Demon Hunters.”

”Ordinary Demon Hunters and our Demon Hall only have a relationship through tasks; their every action is almost completely unrelated to us.”

”But as a Deacon, you become one of our own, truly joining the forces of the Demon Hunting Hall, with a status far surpassing that of ordinary Demon Hunters.”

”If you’re outside, just by showing your Deacon Token, any Demon Hunter must show respect and not dare to offend.”

”Now tell me, isn’t that a lofty status?”

The Chief Steward, all smiles, said, ”Just imagine, if while you are out walking, every Demon Hunter treats you with the utmost respect and admiration, how face-giving that would be.”

”For you young people, face is most important, right?”

Xiao Yi couldn’t help but feel a headache; to him, the Chief Steward, an unfathomable figure, now seemed like a petty person, constantly giving a cheap smile.

So-called honor and status turned out to be like this; he felt as if he was being played with.

It seemed like the old man before him was treating him like a source of amusement.

”Chief Steward, if there’s nothing else, I’ll take my leave,” Xiao Yi shook his head and turned to leave.

”Hey, wait up,” the Chief Steward hurriedly stopped Xiao Yi.

”Don’t be in a hurry, I haven’t finished speaking,” the Chief Steward laughed.

Xiao Yi forced a wry smile again, ”Please speak, Chief Steward.”

The Chief Steward continued, ”Honor, status, you don’t care about. But power, you must need some of that, right?”

Xiao Yi’s expression was indifferent, as he seemed to have already anticipated that the elder in front of him would spout more useless nonsense.

Suddenly, the Chief Steward’s smile vanished, his expression turning serious.

”As I mentioned earlier, becoming a Deacon means truly joining the forces of the Demon Hunting Hall. With this, you can borrow all kinds of resources from the Demon Hunting Hall.”

”Resources?” Xiao Yi became slightly interested.

”Indeed,” said the Chief Steward solemnly, ”For example, the Law Enforcement Team, you can spend Task Points to ask them to do anything for you.”

The Law Enforcement Team, as the direct martial force of the Demon Hunting Hall, each had notable Cultivation, with the weakest at Half-step Mysterious Profundity. If it’s a Captain Level, it’s at least Mysterious Profundity Ninth Layer, or even Half-step Mystic Breakthrough.

”Also, for instance, directly issuing tasks. If you’re out and about needing assistance, you can directly issue a task without going through the Demon Hunting Hall, commanding nearby Demon Hunters to serve you.”

Demon Hunters were all over the continent, with tens of thousands of Demon Hunters just in the cities near the Baiwu City branch hall.

Wherever you are, there will certainly be a considerable number of Demon Hunters nearby.

”Furthermore, if you need to exchange for items that are too high in level, you need certain permissions. For example, Earth Rank Martial Techniques, or Heavenly Materials and Earthly Treasures above Fifth-grade, and so on.”

”If you become a Deacon, you will have these permissions.”

”No matter how you look at it, you’re not losing out, right?” The Chief Steward suddenly stood up, patted Xiao Yi’s shoulder, and smiled ’kindly.’

Xiao Yi gave a wry smile. In the long term, he certainly would have to exchange for higher-level items, sooner or later he would need to become a Deacon.

”Since Yi Xiao is favored by the Chief Steward, I will accept the position of Deacon,” Xiao Yi nodded and said.

”Good,” the Chief Steward laughed heartily, then turned to the woman next to him and said, ”Miaomiao, go take care of the procedure.”

The woman rose from her seat, took the Demon Hunter’s Token from Xiao Yi, and was about to leave when she suddenly asked, ”Chief Steward, should I record those 500 points of rewards now?”

”500 points of rewards?” Xiao Yi was stunned.

The woman explained, ”Mr. Yi Xiao doesn’t know? Bringing in a new Deacon for the Demon Hunting Hall garners a reward of 500 Task Points.”

”Ah,” Xiao Yi instantly had a full head of black lines as he glanced at the Chief Steward.

Task Points, how many Fourth Level Tasks would you have to accumulate to get that?

The Chief Steward, on the other hand, easily obtained it just by coaxing with a few words. No wonder he was so eager to coax Xiao Yi into becoming a Deacon.

”Ha ha.” The Chief Steward smirked, ”Yi Xiao, be quick about it. In the future, you’ll meet these fools too. A few coaxing words and you’ll earn back these Task Points.”

”Fools?” Xiao Yi’s face completely darkened, realizing he was now that exact fool.

At this moment, the woman had already left.

The Chief Steward tossed a book to Xiao Yi, ”Don’t be upset, Yi Xiao. Take a look at this item manual, these are treasures you can only exchange for once you’ve become a Deacon.”

Xiao Yi took the manual and glanced through it, his face growing even darker.

Any item listed required over ten thousand Task Points, even over a hundred thousand Task Points to exchange.

The items were treasures, but when could he possibly afford them?

At the end of the day, he was down 1500 Task Points and hadn’t gained a thing.

This Chief Steward, appearing unfathomable, turned out to be so cunning and deceitful; Xiao Yi had been completely duped by him.

After saving up Task Points for several months, they were tricked away in an instant.

Xiao Yi flipped through the item manual in boredom, just to broaden his horizons.

Suddenly, his eyes fixed on something. There, in the manual, was an item that could be exchanged for merely 2000 Task Points, which was particularly eye-catching.

”Demon Hunting Order?” Xiao Yi’s eyes lit up.

The bearer of the Demon Hunting Order would ensure the protection of their family or clan by the Demon Hunting Hall.

”Demon Hunting Order?” The Chief Steward stopped his derisive laughter and asked, ”What’s this, Yi Xiao? Do you have family members in need of protection?”
