Neither man moved.

The bell had already rung.

The crowd knew it.

The judges knew it.

Leon Ashford knew it.

Sir Joren Pellaris knew it.

Still, neither advanced.

Kael leaned over the sponsor rail.

Victor Ravenshade stood beside him with fresh bandages beneath his clothes and a strip across the bridge of his nose.

He frowned.

Are they fighting?

Darius stood several levels below near the Shield platform.

Sir Corren Valehart answered instead.

Yes.

Victor looked at the arena.

They’re standing there.

Exactly.

Victor stared.

I don’t understand patient people.

Kael smiled.

That explains several things.

Below, Leon held his longsword in a middle guard.

Nothing unusual.

Blade slightly forward.

Right foot back.

Weight balanced enough to move in either direction.

Joren looked different.

His sword rested lower.

Almost lazy.

Point angled toward the sand.

His stance was wider than Leon’s.

Not sloppy.

Practical.

The kind of stance a man developed when he had spent more time fighting beside wagons and roadside ditches than polished training posts.

Kael noticed Joren’s eyes were not fixed on Leon’s sword.

They moved.

Shoulders.

Hands.

Feet.

Even the outer boundary.

Darius had warned them.

Joren fought like someone accustomed to multiple dangers.

He wanted to know what existed around the fight.

Leon watched only Joren.

For now.

Ten seconds passed.

The crowd began murmuring.

Twenty.

A few spectators whistled.

Thirty.

Victor leaned closer to Kael.

If they stand there for twelve minutes, who wins?

Sir Maelin Ors, seated nearby, answered without turning.

Neither deserves to.

Victor nodded.

Fair.

Then Joren moved.

One step.

Not toward Leon.

Sideways.

Leon turned with him.

Joren moved again.

Same distance.

Testing.

Leon adjusted.

No chase.

Joren’s mouth moved slightly.

Approval?

Maybe.

Then he rushed.

No warning.

No dramatic Aura burst.

One second he stood outside Leon’s range.

The next his longsword cut diagonally toward Leon’s shoulder.

Leon raised his blade.

Steel struck.

Joren did not remain there.

His sword slid down Leon’s edge.

He pivoted left.

A second cut came from the opposite side before Leon fully recovered.

Leon blocked again.

Barely.

Joren was already gone.

Three steps away.

Reset.

The exchange lasted less than two seconds.

Kael blinked.

Fast.

Victor frowned.

Not as fast as Halden.

Different.

Sir Corren answered.

Pellaris does not remain after contact.

Kael understood.

Halden Pryce had wanted opponents close enough to counter repeatedly.

Joren wanted to enter, strike, disappear, and change angle.

Road fighting.

One attacker in front might become two from behind.

Never stay where someone expected.

Leon settled back into guard.

No frustration.

No immediate return attack.

Joren circled.

Again.

This time Leon moved first.

Straight advance.

Measured.

Joren stepped outside the line.

Leon turned his front foot and changed direction with him.

Joren smiled.

Then Leon cut.

Joren blocked.

Leon did not stop.

Second strike.

Joren angled away.

Third.

Joren retreated diagonally.

Exactly as the records said.

Leon did not chase his chest.

Instead he cut toward where Joren’s retreating foot needed to land.

Joren noticed.

Pulled the step short.

His balance compressed.

Leon thrust.

Joren twisted his torso.

The blade scraped his side armor.

Scoring bell.

First contact.

Blackwood cheered.

Victor raised a fist.

Leon did not react.

Joren looked down at the mark.

Then back at Leon.

Good.

Leon answered.

You too.

Victor looked toward Kael.

They’re complimenting each other.

Disgusting.

Kael laughed.

Joren changed after that.

The first exchange had shown him Leon could read his retreat.

So he stopped retreating the same way.

The next time Leon pressed, Joren gave one diagonal step.

Then planted.

Leon expected another.

It never came.

Joren’s sword snapped upward beneath Leon’s guard.

Leon barely turned the blade in time.

Steel struck close to his hands.

Joren stepped inside.

Shoulder into Leon’s chest.

Leon staggered.

Joren cut low.

Leon jumped backward.

The tip struck his shin guard.

Scoring bell.

One to one.

Joren withdrew before Leon could answer.

The crowd grew louder.

Kael looked toward Darius.

No expression.

Of course.

Victor asked.

Who’s better?

Sir Maelin answered.

Stop asking that after two minutes.

Victor sighed.

Everyone here is difficult.

Kael nodded.

That’s Aurelia.

The third exchange started with no swords.

Joren kicked sand.

Not much.

Enough to make Leon’s eyes narrow.

Then he moved right.

Leon followed.

Joren stepped left.

Leon adjusted.

Kael realized.

He’s checking how Leon reacts to false movement.

Sir Corren nodded.

And Leon knows it.

The next feint came high.

Leon did nothing.

Joren’s blade stopped halfway.

Another toward the leg.

Leon shifted only enough to protect.

No overreaction.

Joren’s smile disappeared.

Leon had learned something too.

He did not need to answer every possibility.

Joren stepped closer.

Leon suddenly attacked.

No warning.

A straight thrust.

Joren parried outside.

Leon allowed it.

His sword rolled around Joren’s blade and came down toward the shoulder.

Joren ducked.

Leon recovered.

Joren countered immediately.

Leon blocked.

Their swords locked for the first time.

Neither left.

Joren pushed.

Leon pushed back.

Kael leaned forward.

Strength?

Roughly similar.

Sir Corren said.

Aura will change that.

Joren’s Aura appeared first.

Faint.

Gray-white reinforcement around his arms.

Not impressive.

But efficient.

Leon responded.

His Aura was brighter.

Stronger.

Their locked blades shifted toward Joren.

Victor smiled.

Leon has him.

Darius’s voice carried from below.

No.

Victor looked down.

Joren released pressure.

Suddenly.

Leon had been pushing.

His own strength carried him forward.

Joren turned.

Blade disengaged.

His shoulder slipped beside Leon’s.

Then his sword hilt struck Leon behind the elbow.

Leon lost blade alignment.

Joren’s sword swept toward his ribs.

Leon twisted.

Too slow.

Impact against side plate.

Second scoring contact for Joren.

The crowd reacted.

Victor frowned.

He used Leon’s strength.

Kael nodded.

Darius had told Marcus the same thing.

Being stronger in one area did not make someone the better fighter.

Leon reset.

His face changed slightly.

Not anger.

Calculation.

Good.

Four minutes.

Joren led two contacts to one.

No injuries.

No ring-outs.

No disarm attempts yet.

The fight became slower again.

Leon moved more carefully now.

Joren circled.

Then Joren began talking.

You always wait this long?

Leon replied.

Usually.

Bad habit.

Sometimes.

Joren smiled.

The crowd liked it.

Kael did too.

Victor whispered.

I need to start talking more during fights.

Kael looked at him.

You already talk too much outside them.

Fair.

Joren feinted.

Leon did not bite.

Another.

Nothing.

Then Joren rushed.

Leon was ready.

He stepped backward.

Joren expected resistance.

Got none.

Now Joren was the one moving forward.

Leon gave another step.

Then another.

Kael frowned.

He’s copying him.

Not exactly.

Sir Maelin answered.

He’s creating distance for a reason.

Joren pressed.

Sword toward Leon’s shoulder.

Leon blocked.

Retreated.

Second attack.

Blocked.

Third.

Leon gave ground.

The crowd began murmuring.

Joren sensed advantage.

He accelerated.

Then Leon’s rear heel touched one of the slightly raised arena markings.

Not boundary.

A shallow groove left from previous maintenance lines in the sand.

He had seen it earlier.

Kael realized.

Leon stopped.

Joren attacked.

Leon planted his rear foot against the groove.

The added resistance stabilized him.

Instead of retreating, he met Joren’s sword.

Hard.

Aura surged.

Not enormous.

Reliable.

Steel cracked against steel.

Joren’s blade was knocked wider than expected.

Leon stepped forward.

One cut.

Joren barely blocked.

Second.

Joren retreated.

Leon followed.

But not straight.

He mirrored Joren’s diagonal angle.

Joren moved left.

Leon cut off left.

Joren changed right.

Leon shortened the distance instead of pursuing the center.

Joren’s eyes sharpened.

He realized.

Leon was not chasing his body.

He was controlling his available exits.

Kael smiled.

Reliable doesn’t mean stupid.

Sir Corren nodded.

Nor passive.

Leon attacked again.

Joren parried.

Leon stayed.

Second strike.

Joren blocked.

Third.

Joren tried slipping away.

Leon shifted with him.

Shoulder pressure.

Sword high.

Joren had less space.

The outer boundary approached.

Joren looked behind himself once.

Only once.

Leon saw.

He feinted high.

Joren raised guard.

Leon kicked the inside of Joren’s front ankle.

Not enough to injure.

Enough to disrupt.

Joren stumbled one step outside the boundary.

Horn.

First ring-out.

Blackwood erupted.

Leon immediately stepped back.

No chase.

Joren returned.

He smiled.

That was rude.

Leon answered.

You said waiting was a bad habit.

The crowd laughed.

Even Joren did.

Five minutes thirty.

Now the fight had changed again.

Joren stopped giving Leon long sequences.

He began breaking rhythm.

Quick attack.

Long pause.

Two quick attacks.

Circle.

No contact.

Sudden low cut.

Leon adjusted.

Mostly.

One strike slipped past and scraped his forearm guard.

Third scoring contact for Joren.

Joren retreated.

Leon did not react emotionally.

That frustrated Joren.

Kael saw it.

A fighter like Joren used reactions.

Fear.

Aggression.

Predictable pursuit.

Leon gave very little.

Joren’s greatest strength—forcing opponents into uncomfortable movement—had less effect on someone comfortable being patient.

But Leon still had a problem.

He was losing scored contacts.

If the fight reached twelve minutes without decisive victory, the judges could award it.

He could not simply remain reliable forever.

He had to create something.

Darius knew.

Kael knew.

Leon knew.

The sixth minute passed.

Then seven.

No decisive contact.

The fight became technical enough that parts of the crowd grew restless.

A few spectators shouted for aggression.

Others had become deeply invested in the chess match.

Cassian watched from the Imperial balcony.

Seris Vaelor beside him.

Prince Marcus Asterion leaned forward.

Kael noticed his brother preferred straightforward power, yet even he had stopped writing to watch.

Good.

A technically quiet fight could still be engaging if readers understood what was happening.

Leon began changing his guard.

Not dramatically.

Sword point slightly lower.

Then higher.

Then center.

Joren watched.

Leon repeated.

Kael frowned.

What’s he doing?

Sir Maelin answered.

Giving information.

Why?

To see which information Joren trusts.

Kael understood only partly.

Leon lowered his point.

Joren moved closer.

Raised it.

Joren stayed farther.

Again.

Same.

Joren preferred entering against the lower point.

Because?

Victor asked.

Less immediate thrust threat?

Sir Corren nodded.

Partly.

Leon learned that.

Then he deliberately lowered the sword again.

Joren advanced.

Leon retreated half a step.

Joren entered.

Sword cut toward shoulder.

Leon parried.

Joren began his usual diagonal exit.

Leon did not follow.

Instead he thrust straight at empty space.

Victor frowned.

He missed.

Kael looked closer.

No.

Joren’s diagonal movement brought his ribs into the thrust line.

He had walked into it.

Blade tip struck armor.

Scoring bell.

Two to three.

Joren stopped.

Looked at Leon.

Then laughed.

You set that up.

Leon nodded.

Three times.

Joren’s smile widened.

Good.

Now both knew the other was learning.

The fight had become dangerous.

Joren stopped using that entry completely.

Immediate adaptation.

Leon had removed one tool.

Joren changed to close pressure.

His Aura strengthened.

Still lower than Leon’s.

But he focused it through his legs.

Sudden speed.

He crossed distance faster than before.

Leon barely blocked.

Joren stayed close this time.

One strike.

Two.

Three.

Leon gave ground.

Joren did not disengage.

He had realized his usual hit-and-leave style was becoming too predictable.

Now he fought ugly.

Shoulder.

Elbow.

Hilt.

Short cuts.

Leon had cleaner fundamentals.

But cleaner fundamentals were harder in crowded range.

Joren had fought in caravan ambushes.

This was familiar.

Leon took a hilt strike to the jaw guard.

Head snapped.

Joren cut toward his sword wrist.

Leon pulled back.

Joren kicked his thigh.

Leon stumbled.

Crowd rose.

Joren pressed.

Leon blocked high.

Low.

High.

Then Joren intentionally struck Leon’s blade near the tip.

Not to block.

To vibrate it.

The shock traveled into Leon’s hands.

His grip loosened.

Joren hit again.

Same place.

Leon realized too late.

Third strike.

Leon’s sword flew free.

The Coliseum erupted.

Victor shouted.

No!

The sword landed four yards away.

Joren immediately advanced.

Disarm did not automatically end the fight.

Control afterward would.

Leon backed away.

Unarmed.

Joren’s sword pointed toward him.

Kael stood.

This could be it.

Darius’s expression remained unreadable.

Joren did not rush.

Smart.

He had advantage.

Why throw it away?

Leon looked toward his sword.

Joren saw.

Moved to block the path.

Leon changed direction.

Joren matched.

Victor grabbed the rail.

Do something.

Kael looked at him.

Very useful.

I’m helping.

Below, Joren advanced.

Leon retreated.

Boundary behind him.

No weapon.

One ring-out only for Joren, none for Leon.

If Leon stepped out three times, done.

If Joren achieved clear sword control, judge could stop.

Leon needed an answer.

He raised both hands.

Unarmed guard.

Joren’s eyebrows rose.

Then he attacked.

Controlled thrust.

Not lethal.

Toward chest.

Leon moved outside.

Grabbed Joren’s sword wrist.

Joren twisted free.

Leon tried elbow.

Joren backed.

Good.

No overcommitment.

Second entry.

Leon attempted another wrist catch.

Joren expected it.

Sword hilt smashed Leon’s forearm.

Leon hissed.

Joren stepped behind his lead leg.

Almost tripped him.

Leon barely recovered.

Joren’s blade stopped at Leon’s throat.

Judge leaned forward.

One heartbeat.

Two.

Leon slapped the blade sideways with his forearm and stepped inside before clear control could be declared.

Risky.

Blade cut his sleeve.

Blood appeared.

Small.

Leon drove shoulder into Joren.

Both staggered.

Leon grabbed the sword arm with both hands.

Joren’s eyes sharpened.

Now grappling.

Victor smiled.

There.

Joren released one hand from the sword.

Punched Leon in the ribs.

Leon absorbed.

Did not release.

Second punch.

Harder.

Leon shifted grip.

Joren tried turning blade inward.

Dangerous.

Leon trapped Joren’s wrist against his own shoulder.

Then stepped behind Joren’s lead foot.

Throw attempt.

Joren recognized.

Dropped weight.

Blocked.

The two struggled.

Not elegant.

The crowd roared anyway.

Joren’s road experience helped.

He knew clinches.

Leon knew structured unarmed defense but less real grappling.

Joren began winning the position.

He turned.

Leon lost the wrist.

Joren pulled sword free.

Leon ducked under the first cut.

Then instead of retreating—

He ran toward his own sword.

Joren chased.

Exactly.

Leon reached the weapon.

Too far to bend safely.

Joren behind him.

Leon kicked the sword.

The longsword slid across the sand.

Not toward himself.

Past Joren.

Joren’s head turned instinctively.

Why?

Kael frowned.

Leon kept running two steps.

Then turned.

His sword was now behind Joren.

Joren stood between Leon and the weapon.

Still advantage.

Victor looked confused.

That didn’t help.

Darius’s eyes sharpened.

Leon moved toward Joren.

Unarmed.

Joren prepared.

Leon feinted toward the sword.

Joren shifted to intercept.

Leon changed direction and rushed Joren’s empty side.

Joren turned.

Blade cut.

Leon ducked.

Passed him.

Now Leon and his sword were on the same side.

Victor shouted.

Oh!

Leon dove.

Rolled.

Hand closed around hilt.

Joren attacked immediately.

Leon rolled again.

Blade struck sand.

Leon came up on one knee.

Blocked.

Steel crashed.

Both separated.

The Coliseum erupted.

Weapon recovered.

Not because Joren gave him a chance.

Because Leon changed the geography of the fight.

Kael smiled.

That was good.

Sir Maelin nodded.

Very.

Nine minutes.

Both breathing harder.

Leon had a bleeding forearm.

Joren’s thigh armor carried the earlier strike.

No major injuries.

Joren still led three scoring contacts to two.

One ring-out against him.

No decisive result.

The fight could go to judges.

Leon knew.

He could not leave it there.

Joren knew too.

He began slowing.

Kael noticed first.

Fatigue?

Sir Corren frowned.

Maybe.

Joren had spent more energy in the close-pressure sequence.

His Aura reserve was lower.

Leon remained steadier.

There.

Leon’s advantage.

Reliability.

Endurance.

Efficiency.

The quiet things.

The fight had reached the point where quiet things became loud.

Joren attacked.

Still quick.

Not as quick.

Leon blocked.

Joren withdrew diagonally.

Leon followed just enough.

No chase.

Next attack.

Leon defended.

Joren’s recovery took fractionally longer.

Leon touched his shoulder.

Scoring bell.

Three to three.

Crowd exploded.

Joren’s expression changed.

He looked at the arena clock.

Two minutes thirty left.

Now equal.

Leon had forced him to care about time.

That changed Joren’s decisions.

He attacked sooner.

Leon expected.

Blocked.

Joren changed direction.

Leon followed.

Joren feinted retreat.

Leon did not bite.

Joren came back in.

Leon parried.

Then for the first time, Leon used a larger Aura burst.

Not wild.

Focused through forearms and legs.

His parry hit harder than Joren expected.

Joren’s sword knocked outward.

Leon thrust.

Joren twisted.

Blade scraped chest plate.

Fourth contact.

Leon led.

Blackwood roared.

Joren backed away.

Breathing hard now.

Leon did not celebrate.

He advanced.

Slowly.

Kael frowned.

He’s not going to wait for time.

Darius answered from below.

Good.

Leon could possibly protect the lead.

But judges valued ring control and effective combat.

More importantly, Leon was not fighting to win by arithmetic alone.

He wanted decisive control.

Joren reset.

Raised blade.

Leon stepped in.

The next exchange lasted nearly twenty seconds.

Long for sword combat.

Strike.

Block.

Turn.

Recover.

Joren angled.

Leon cut off.

Joren slipped away.

Leon followed.

Not too much.

Joren attempted the same vibration disarm.

First strike near blade tip.

Leon recognized immediately.

Instead of resisting the second, he changed grip closer to the guard and let his blade rotate.

Joren’s sword slid off.

Leon countered.

Joren barely blocked.

Third exchange.

Joren tried shoulder pressure.

Leon stepped aside.

This time Joren’s road habit betrayed him.

His feet expected uneven ground.

His stance widened.

Arena sand was flat.

Leon kicked the inside ankle.

Joren stumbled.

Same basic technique Leon had used before.

Joren recovered.

But slower.

Leon attacked high.

Joren blocked.

Leon stepped around.

Joren turned.

Too late.

Leon struck Joren’s sword arm with the flat.

Not enough to disarm.

Enough to numb.

Joren’s grip weakened.

Leon saw.

Now.

He attacked the weapon.

Not the body.

One strike against Joren’s blade.

Second against guard.

Joren backed.

Third.

Aura reinforced.

Joren’s sword flew from his hand.

The crowd exploded.

Now reverse.

Leon had disarmed Joren.

Joren did exactly what Leon had done.

Raised hands.

Unarmed guard.

Kael smiled.

Good.

Neither man surrendered simply because the weapon left.

Joren moved toward his sword.

Leon blocked the route.

Joren feinted left.

Leon followed.

Right.

Leon adjusted.

Joren rushed him directly.

Leon raised sword—

Then stopped himself.

Do not swing wildly at an unarmed opponent.

Joren closed.

Caught Leon’s sword wrist.

Exactly what Leon had attempted earlier.

They grappled.

Joren tried turning the blade.

Leon stepped backward.

Then remembered.

His own weakness.

Following competent patterns too easily.

Joren expected him to defend the weapon.

So Leon let go.

His sword dropped.

Both men were suddenly unarmed.

Joren froze.

One heartbeat.

Leon drove forward.

Shoulder into chest.

Joren fell backward.

Leon followed.

Mounted position.

Joren tried rolling.

Leon shifted weight.

Joren bridged.

Leon stayed.

No fancy choke.

No reckless punches.

He trapped Joren’s right arm and pressed forearm across upper chest.

Joren fought.

Hard.

Kael could see Leon’s stability.

Not brilliant grappling.

Steady.

Joren shifted.

Leon adjusted.

Joren attempted the same leg hook Victor had used against Halden.

Leon recognized it from watching.

Pulled his knee free before the hook closed.

Joren’s eyes widened.

Leon had learned from Victor’s fight.

Good.

The Black Dragon candidates were not isolated stories.

They watched each other.

They learned.

Joren tried again.

Leon changed position.

The arena clock showed forty seconds.

Joren could possibly survive to judges.

He stopped trying to reverse.

Instead turned his body toward boundary.

Kael frowned.

What is he doing?

Darius understood first.

He’s trying to force a scramble.

Joren exploded upward.

Not strength.

Timing.

Leon shifted.

Joren twisted.

Both rolled.

Leon lost top position.

Joren crawled toward the dropped swords.

Leon grabbed his ankle.

Joren kicked free.

Twenty-five seconds.

Joren reached Leon’s sword first.

But picking up an opponent’s weapon was permitted if it remained active in the arena.

He grabbed it.

The crowd screamed.

Leon stood unarmed again.

Fifteen seconds.

Joren turned with Leon’s sword.

The weapon was longer than his.

Different balance.

Unfamiliar.

He attacked.

Leon moved outside.

Ten.

Joren swung again.

Too wide.

Leon stepped inside.

Five.

Caught both of Joren’s wrists.

Turned.

Used Joren’s forward movement.

Hip throw.

Joren hit sand.

Leon trapped the sword arm.

The final bell rang.

Both froze.

Silence.

No submission.

No decisive control long enough before time.

Judges.

The entire Coliseum exhaled at once.

Leon stood.

Then immediately offered Joren his hand.

Joren stared up.

Took it.

Leon retrieved Joren’s sword.

Handed it back.

Joren returned Leon’s.

No words.

Both exhausted.

Kael looked toward the judging table.

This was close.

Very close.

Victor stood beside him.

Leon had four contacts.

Joren three.

Joren had the disarm first.

Leon had the ring-out.

Then both disarmed each other.

Kael looked toward Sir Corren.

What matters most?

Everything.

That’s useless.

Correct.

The judges conferred.

Five scoring officials.

One Registry combat assessor.

Sir Maelin observing.

Darius did not vote because Leon was House Kael-sponsored.

Good.

Neutrality.

The crowd waited.

Joren stood with hands on hips.

Leon breathed slowly.

Then the central slate illuminated.

EFFECTIVE STRIKES: ASHFORD

Blackwood cheered.

WEAPON CONTROL: EVEN

RING CONTROL: ASHFORD

DEFENSIVE ADAPTATION: ASHFORD

OFFENSIVE INITIATIVE: PELLARIS

OVERALL DECISION: SPLIT

Kael’s stomach tightened.

Split?

Three judges one way.

Two another.

Grand Herald Ken waited for the result slip.

Then announced:

Winner by split decision—

The entire Coliseum went silent.

Sir Leon Ashford.

Blackwood erupted.

Victor slammed both hands on the rail.

Marcus shouted from the candidate section.

Elias actually smiled openly.

Damien nodded once.

Kael exhaled.

Leon closed his eyes.

One second.

Then bowed to the judges.

Joren stood beside him.

No anger.

Disappointment.

Real.

But controlled.

He offered his forearm.

Leon accepted.

Joren said something quietly.

Kael could not hear.

Leon answered.

Then Joren left the arena beneath applause.

Not champion applause.

Respect.

And Kael remembered Marquis Oren again.

Watch who approaches after a loss.

Three noble aides wrote Joren’s name before he reached the tunnel.

Good.

The tournament did not only reward winners.

Leon walked toward the exit.

Darius met him halfway.

Sir.

Darius looked at him.

You won.

Yes.

Barely.

Leon nodded.

Yes.

Why?

Leon thought.

Better endurance late.

Partly.

I adjusted to his diagonal retreats.

Yes.

He looked toward the arena.

And I learned from Victor’s ground fight.

Darius’s eyebrow rose.

Good.

Leon continued.

But I almost lost because I was too comfortable defending.

Darius nodded.

There.

If Joren had conserved more stamina?

Leon answered.

He probably keeps the lead.

If he hadn’t used the disarm sequence three times?

I might not have recognized it.

If you had protected your one-contact lead instead of advancing?

Leon thought.

Maybe I win anyway.

Maybe.

Darius said.

Or maybe you give him initiative and lose the judges.

Leon nodded.

Then Darius looked directly at him.

You did something well that your record said you struggled with.

Leon waited.

You stopped following the rhythm of someone competent simply because it was working.

Leon understood.

Trusting patterns.

Same weakness as trusting commanders.

He had broken the pattern.

Darius continued.

Good.

Leon smiled.

Actual praise?

Darius looked at him.

Do not become Victor.

Leon laughed.

The bracket changed.

Sir Leon Ashford — ADVANCES

Two Black Dragon names now stood in the Round of 32.

Victor.

Leon.

Kael looked at the updated lines.

The tournament suddenly felt real in a different way.

They were no longer hypothetical candidates.

They were surviving.

But every line narrowed.

Every win moved them toward someone else who had also won.

No easy fights appeared as the bracket tightened.

Good.

That was how it should feel.

Damien Ravenmoor’s Spear Division match began after midday.

The thirty-two-person bracket had its own crowd.

Smaller than Swordsman.

More specialized.

The people who cared about spear fighting cared deeply.

Sir Calista Veyne took a central judging seat.

No surprise.

Damien stood in the preparation corridor with his spear across both hands.

Darius stood opposite.

Kael arrived.

Sir Torren Hask’s profile lay open.

Thirty-one.

Western Provincial Legion.

Seven years active border service.

Spear.

Longer weapon than Damien’s by nearly a foot.

Strong forward pressure.

Aura reserve moderate-high.

Control solid.

Kael looked toward Damien.

Strength?

Damien answered.

Reach.

Experience.

Pressure.

Weakness?

He looked toward Darius.

Darius gave nothing.

Damien continued.

If he pressures constantly, maybe he depends on opponents giving ground.

Maybe.

Darius said.

Kael smiled faintly.

There it was.

Damien continued.

Longer spear is stronger before I enter.

Worse if I get inside the head.

Correct.

Darius looked toward him.

Do not confuse knowing that with being able to do it.

Damien nodded.

Torren has spent years stopping people from entering his preferred range.

Yes, Sir.

Kael looked at the spear.

Damien’s weapon was simple.

Good steel head.

Dark shaft.

Balanced for him.

Hugo had checked it that morning.

No magical gimmick.

No hidden advantage.

Just Damien.

Grand Herald Ken called the match.

Sir Damien Ravenmoor of House Kael, Black Dragon.

Damien moved toward the gate.

Then Darius spoke.

Ravenmoor.

Damien stopped.

Do not command the fight.

Damien frowned.

Sir?

You solve problems like a commander.

That is useful.

In a duel, your opponent is not a squad.

You cannot order every variable into place.

Damien thought.

Then nodded.

Adapt without trying to control everything.

Darius’s expression changed slightly.

Better.

Damien entered.

Across the arena, Sir Torren Hask stepped through the opposite gate.

He was taller than Damien.

Thicker.

Weathered face.

Short brown beard.

Dark border armor.

His spear truly was longer.

Not decorative.

A soldier’s weapon.

Torren planted the butt in the sand.

Looked at Damien.

Blackwood.

Damien nodded.

Western Legion.

Torren smiled.

I heard you like giving orders.

Damien lowered his spear.

I heard you like making people walk backward.

Torren’s smile widened.

Good.

The judge stepped away.

The bell rang.

Torren attacked before the sound finished.

Not a feint.

Not a test.

A full thrust straight for Damien’s chest.

Damien barely moved in time.

The spearhead passed his armor by inches.

Torren recovered instantly.

Second thrust.

Damien parried.

The impact shoved his spear aside.

Third thrust.

Low.

Damien jumped back.

Torren followed.

Fourth.

Fifth.

No pause.

Kael stood.

He’s fast.

Darius answered.

No.

Kael looked at him.

Efficient.

Torren’s hands barely moved.

The long spear did the work.

Small adjustments at the rear hand translated into large movements at the head.

Damien retreated again.

Exactly what Torren wanted.

One step.

Two.

Three.

The arena boundary seemed very far away.

But if this continued—

It would not remain far.

Torren smiled.

Walk.

Damien’s eyes narrowed.

Torren thrust again.

Damien parried.

Another.

Parried.

Then Torren changed from thrust to sweeping lateral strike with the shaft.

Damien ducked.

The spearhead reversed toward his shoulder.

Damien twisted.

Metal scraped armor.

First scoring contact.

Western section roared.

Torren reset without breathing hard.

Damien stared.

Kael looked toward Darius.

Darius’s face remained completely calm.

Which meant this was exactly the problem Damien needed.

A fighter who would not wait for him to think.

Torren lowered the spearhead again.

Then advanced.

Damien raised his weapon.

One scoring contact down.

Outreached.

Outpressured.

Facing a veteran who had spent seven years teaching enemies that retreat belonged to him.

The second attack began.

And for the first time in the tournament, Damien Ravenmoor looked like a man who had absolutely no control over the battlefield.

The question was whether he needed it.
