A cold wind drifted through Ironridge Fortress.

The hidden passage remained open.

Torches burned at its entrance.

Two Black Dragons stood guard, neither taking their eyes off the darkness below.

No one entered.

No one questioned Kael’s decision.

Whatever lay beneath Ironridge had remained sealed for centuries.

One more day would not matter.

Preparation would.

Inventory

Inside the command hall...

Long tables had been covered with supplies.

Rope.

Oil lanterns.

Fresh water.

Medical kits.

Rations.

Replacement weapons.

Extra shields.

Darius inspected each item personally.

”If we’re going underground...”

”We prepare for three days.”

Walter raised an eyebrow.

”Three?”

Darius nodded.

”If we’re lucky.”

Kael walked between the tables.

He wasn’t looking at the equipment.

He was looking at the people.

Some soldiers were nervous.

Others were excited.

A few tried hiding both.

His previous life taught him something.

A leader who ignored fear...

Would eventually lose the people following him.

The Black Dragons

Kael stopped in front of the assembled soldiers.

”There will be no shame in speaking now.”

The men looked at one another.

”If anyone believes they aren’t ready...”

”They’ll remain above with Commander Darius.”

”No punishment.”

”No judgment.”

Silence.

One young soldier slowly raised his hand.

”I’ve never fought underground before, Your Highness.”

”I don’t want to become a burden.”

Several others lowered their heads.

Clearly...

They had been thinking the same thing.

Kael smiled.

”Thank you.”

The soldier blinked.

”...Thank you?”

”It takes courage to admit your limits.”

”I’d rather have an honest soldier than a proud corpse.”

The room relaxed.

Three more soldiers stepped forward.

Then another two.

Walter quietly smiled.

”He’s good at this.”

Leon nodded.

”They trust him.”

Kael looked toward Darius.

”They stay with you.”

”Guard the fortress.”

”If anything happens outside...”

”I want Ironridge protected.”

Darius saluted.

”As you command.”

A Conversation with Aldric

As preparations continued...

Kael found Commander Aldric standing atop the western wall.

The old knight watched the horizon.

”You built these walls?”

Kael asked.

Aldric chuckled.

”No.”

”I merely repaired them.”

”For twenty years?”

The old commander nodded.

”A little each season.”

”If a stone cracked...”

”I replaced it.”

”If a tower weakened...”

”I reinforced it.”

Kael looked around.

No one would have known.

Yet...

Someone had quietly preserved an entire fortress.

Alone.

”Were you never angry?”

Kael asked.

Aldric remained silent for a long moment.

Finally...

”I was.”

”I cursed the council.”

”I cursed the ministers.”

”I even cursed the Emperor.”

Kael looked surprised.

The old commander smiled.

”But every morning...”

”I put on my armor.”

”And I did my duty.”

”Why?”

”Because my anger...”

”...was never more important than the Empire.”

Those words lingered in Kael’s mind.

Dragonspire Palace

The Imperial Court convened once again.

Today’s topic...

The royal assignments.

Several nobles stood together in quiet conversation.

One elderly duke spoke confidently.

”The First Prince continues proving why he deserves the throne.”

Another nodded.

”The fourth princess has stabilized trade.”

”The six princess exposed corruption.”

A younger noble frowned.

”And the Tenth Prince?”

”He seems to be wandering villages.”

Before the discussion could continue...

The great doors opened.

The emperor entered.

Everyone bowed.

”Rise.”

The emperor took his seat.

Without ceremony...

He looked toward Chancellor Magnus.

”Reports.”

”The First Prince has secured the western trade route.”

”The Fourth Princess concluded negotiations with Valoria.”

”The eleven princes recovered stolen tax revenue.”

”The Sixth Princess established new legal courts in the eastern districts.”

The Emperor listened carefully.

Each accomplishment was different.

Each revealed something about the child who completed it.

Finally...

”The Tenth Prince continues investigating Ironridge Fortress.”

One noble couldn’t help himself.

”Your Majesty.”

”With respect...”

”Shouldn’t a prince focus on matters worthy of the throne?”

The hall grew quiet.

The emperor looked directly at the noble.

”What matters is beneath a future emperor?”

The noble hesitated.

”I... did not mean—”

The Emperor interrupted calmly.

”If a village burns...”

”Is that beneath him?”

”No, Your Majesty.”

”If soldiers disappear...”

”Is that beneath him?”

”No.”

”If corruption hides where no one bothers looking...”

”Is that beneath him?”

The emperor leaned back.

”The throne exists to serve the Empire.”

”Not the other way around.”

No one spoke again.

Princess Elena quietly glanced toward the First Prince.

Cassian remained expressionless.

Listening.

Learning.

Ironridge Library

Meanwhile...

Iris emerged from the underground archives carrying another dusty ledger.

”Your Highness.”

”I found payroll records.”

Walter blinked.

”...Payroll?”

She nodded.

”They list every soldier stationed here.”

Kael accepted the book.

Page after page...

Hundreds of names.

Families.

Birthplaces.

Years of service.

Near the end...

Something stood out.

Every soldier had been reassigned.

Every officer transferred.

Every worker relocated.

Except one.

Commander Aldric Vayne

Status:

Remain at post until relieved by direct Imperial decree.

Walter stared.

”They literally left him here.”

”No.”

Aldric corrected gently.

”They entrusted me with the seal.”

Kael slowly closed the ledger.

Someone had intentionally designed this.

Not negligence.

Not oversight.

A choice.

But by whom?

The emperor who ruled twenty years ago?

The Imperial Council?

Or someone else entirely?

The Descent

As evening approached...

The final preparations were complete.

Lanterns were filled.

Weapons sharpened.

Armor repaired.

Kael stood before the hidden staircase.

Beside him...

Walter.

Leon.

Iris.

Grom.

Commander Aldric.

And twenty of the Black Dragons.

He looked at each of them.

”This isn’t a battle.”

”It’s an investigation.”

”If anything feels wrong...”

”We fall back.”

”No unnecessary risks.”

Everyone nodded.

Kael placed one foot on the ancient stone steps.

A cool breeze drifted upward from the darkness.

Carrying with it...

Air untouched for centuries.

The system appeared one final time before they descended.

Main Quest Updated

The Emperor’s Eyes

Objective Added:

Discover the truth beneath Ironridge Fortress.

Reward:

???

Failure:

Unknown.

Without another word...

Kael began walking down the ancient staircase.

One step.

Then another.

Behind him...

The lights of Ironridge Fortress slowly disappeared.

Ahead...

Only darkness awaited.
