The Imperial Expedition Corps continued west.

For the first day after leaving the Crimson Highlands, the march remained quiet.

Too quiet.

The soldiers had become accustomed to the sound of monsters.

Now, the absence of them felt more unsettling.

No wolves followed the roads.

No birds flew above the forests.

Even the insects seemed to have disappeared.

The further the expedition moved from the mountains, the more normal the world became.

But nobody in the expedition had forgotten what they had seen.

Colonel Gareth stood over the expedition map.

Several officers surrounded him.

”We’ve traveled nearly forty miles.”

One officer pointed toward the road.

”Scouts report no monster activity ahead.”

Gareth nodded.

”Good.”

Another officer hesitated.

”And the refugees?”

”Still moving with us.”

”The healers estimate another two days before the injured can travel normally.”

Gareth looked toward the map.

”Then we’ll slow down.”

A noble officer immediately objected.

”Colonel, slowing the entire expedition for villagers will delay our return.”

Gareth looked at him.

”We’re not abandoning Imperial citizens.”

”They were caught in the attack.”

”They’re our responsibility.”

The officer clenched his jaw.

”Yes, Colonel.”

Gareth dismissed him.

Outside the command tent...

The Black Dragons were repairing equipment.

Some soldiers cleaned their weapons.

Others treated minor injuries.

The expedition had changed them.

Before the journey...

They had trained together.

Now...

They had fought together.

There was a difference.

Darius watched two soldiers helping one another repair armor.

”They’re becoming a real unit.”

Kael looked over.

”They already were.”

Darius smiled.

”Not like this.”

Kael didn’t answer.

He knew what Darius meant.

A branch-family soldier approached.

”Commander.”

Kael turned.

”Yes?”

The soldier hesitated.

”I wanted to ask about something.”

”What?”

”Those soldiers from the main force...”

Kael waited.

”They keep looking at us.”

Walter laughed from nearby.

”They’ve been doing that since we left.”

The soldier shook his head.

”It’s different now.”

Kael understood.

The expedition had created a divide.

The main branch soldiers believed Kael’s unit was gaining influence.

The branch-family soldiers believed Kael’s unit was giving them opportunities they had never had.

Both sides were watching one another.

And Kael knew that if he wasn’t careful...

That tension could become something worse.

Kael called five soldiers forward.

”Tomorrow, you’ll lead the morning patrol.”

The soldiers looked surprised.

One of them pointed toward himself.

”Us?”

”Yes.”

”We’ve never commanded a patrol.”

”That’s why you’re doing it.”

Kael looked at each of them.

”Leadership isn’t something you learn by waiting for permission.”

”You learn by making decisions.”

The soldiers straightened.

”Yes, Commander.”

Darius smiled.

”You really are building officers.”

Kael nodded.

”Eventually, fifty soldiers won’t be enough.”

Walter looked at him.

”You’re thinking bigger.”

Kael looked toward the road ahead.

”I have to.”

That evening...

Kael once again separated himself from the camp.

He stood beside a river.

His sword was planted in the ground.

The water flowed quietly.

Kael closed his eyes.

He remembered the battle beneath the mountain.

The demon’s speed.

Its movements.

Its ability to disappear.

He remembered how quickly it adapted to his attacks.

He needed to become faster.

But speed alone wasn’t enough.

He needed precision.

Kael activated Night Aura.

The dark energy wrapped around his legs.

He stepped forward.

WHOOSH!

His body slid across the riverbank.

Ice formed beneath his feet.

Night Aura accelerated him.

Kael turned.

Light sharpened his vision.

He moved between several trees.

One.

Two.

Three.

Then—

He stopped.

No wasted movement.

No loss of balance.

The system appeared.

Night Frost Step

Mastery: 12%

Improvement detected.

Mana efficiency increased.

Directional control improved.

Kael nodded.

”Good.”

He continued.

Sword and Aura

Kael drew his sword.

Night Aura remained around his legs.

He didn’t cover the blade.

Instead...

He focused everything on his movement.

One step.

Slash.

Two steps.

Thrust.

Three steps.

Spin.

His body accelerated between attacks.

The sword became an extension of his movement rather than the source of it.

He remembered something from the ancient battlefield carvings.

The warriors hadn’t relied on power alone.

They moved with purpose.

Every step had meaning.

Every strike had intent.

Kael repeated the sequence.

Again.

Until his arms burned.

Blood

Kael held out his hand.

A small amount of blood floated above his palm.

He divided it into ten needles.

Five moved left.

Five moved right.

He closed his eyes.

The needles continued moving.

Then one suddenly dropped.

Kael opened his eyes.

”Still not enough.”

He tried again.

This time...

Ten remained airborne.

He lasted thirty seconds.

Then one disappeared.

The system appeared.

Blood Manipulation

Independent control:

10 constructs

Stability:

Moderate

Warning:

Further increase may cause concentration overload.

Kael lowered his hand.

He wasn’t going to force it.

Ten was enough for now.

A Message from Home

When Kael returned to camp...

A messenger was waiting.

”Prince Kael.”

Kael accepted the sealed letter.

The Imperial crest was stamped across it.

He broke the seal.

His eyes moved across the page.

His expression slowly changed.

Darius noticed.

”What is it?”

Kael folded the letter.

”The Emperor wants us back immediately.”

Walter raised an eyebrow.

”Because of the mountain?”

”Probably.”

Kael looked toward the west.

”But that’s not the only reason.”

Far away...

Inside the Imperial Palace...

The emperor sat upon his throne.

The letter from Kael rested on the table.

Several ministers stood around him.

One minister spoke.

”Your Majesty, the report mentions an ancient seal.”

Another nodded.

”And possible demonic energy.”

The emperor remained silent.

Then he looked toward the Empress.

She had been quiet throughout the entire meeting.

”What do you think?”

The Empress’s expression remained composed.

”I think we should investigate.”

The Emperor studied her.

”And who should lead the investigation?”

She smiled faintly.

”Perhaps someone who already discovered it.”

The Emperor’s eyes narrowed.

”Kael.”

”Yes.”

The Empress lowered her gaze.

”After all...”

”He seems remarkably capable.”

Her voice was calm.

Her expression was pleasant.

But beneath the table...

Her fingers slowly tightened around the fabric of her dress.

Kael had once again returned to the center of Imperial attention.

And she hated it.

Not because he had done anything wrong.

But because every accomplishment of Kael’s reminded her of someone she despised.

His mother.

The Empress’s Private Chamber

Later that night...

The Empress stood alone before a mirror.

She removed her jewelry.

Her reflection stared back.

Beautiful.

Controlled.

Perfect.

But her eyes were cold.

A servant entered quietly.

”You summoned me, Your Majesty?”

The Empress didn’t turn.

”How long until the expedition returns?”

”Approximately four days.”

”And the First Prince?”

”Preparing for his next assignment.”

”And the other princes?”

”Following their respective tasks.”

The Empress smiled.

”Good.”

She finally turned.

”Keep watching them.”

The servant bowed.

”All of them?”

”Especially the ones who believe they’re becoming important.”

The servant hesitated.

”And Prince Kael?”

The Empress’s smile disappeared.

”Especially him.”

The expedition marched through the night.

Kael rode near the front.

The mysterious egg remained hidden among his belongings.

Every few hours...

He checked it.

Nothing.

No light.

No movement.

No heartbeat.

Until shortly before dawn.

Thump.

Kael’s eyes opened.

He looked down.

The egg pulsed once.

Then again.

Thump.

Kael quietly pulled it from its container.

A thin silver line crossed the shell.

But this time...

Something else appeared.

A tiny black mark.

Kael stared at it.

The mark slowly formed the shape of a symbol.

A dragon.

But unlike the ancient dragon carvings...

This one had its wings folded around a small circle.

Kael touched the symbol.

The egg suddenly became warm.

Then—

The system appeared.

Unknown Egg

Ancient Energy:

Increasing

True Dragon Correlation:

Confirmed

New reaction detected.

External presence recognized.

Source:

Unknown

Kael’s expression became serious.

”External presence?”

The system didn’t answer.

He looked toward the eastern horizon.

The Crimson Highlands were no longer visible.

But something had followed them.

Or perhaps...

Something had noticed the egg.

Kael slowly placed it back into its container.

His hand remained on his sword.

The road home suddenly felt much less peaceful.

And four days from now...

He would return to the Imperial Capital carrying secrets that could change the future of the Empire.
