The night passed slowly.

Kael slept little.

The image of the hooded elder destroying the system’s scout construct lingered in his mind.

It was the first time since his reincarnation...

Someone had interacted with one of the system’s abilities.

Not only sensed it...

Destroyed it.

The system remained silent.

Almost...

As if it were thinking.

Morning arrived.

The Imperial Palace was quieter than usual.

Yet beneath that silence...

The entire capital buzzed with rumors.

The Cor Decree dominated every conversation.

Inside taverns...

Inside marketplaces...

Inside noble estates...

Everyone had an opinion.

Some praised the emperor.

Others cursed him.

Some feared what would happen next.

Others believed nothing would change.

They were wrong.

Everything had changed.

A Royal Summons

A knock echoed through Kael’s guest chamber.

Knock. Knock.

Walter opened the door.

Standing outside was Commander Severus Kane.

The commander gave a respectful bow.

”Prince Kael.”

”His Majesty requests your presence.”

Walter blinked.

”...Again?”

Kane ignored him.

”The Emperor wishes to speak with you.”

”Alone.”

Kael stood.

”I’ll come.”

The Dragon Garden

Instead of leading Kael toward the throne room...

Commander Kane brought him to the rear gardens of the palace.

The Dragon Garden was unlike the others.

No flowers.

No fountains.

Only towering ancient oak trees.

A quiet lake.

And a single stone pavilion.

It was peaceful.

Almost sacred.

The emperor stood beside the lake.

His hands rested behind his back.

He didn’t turn around.

”You came.”

Kael bowed.

”You called for me.”

For several moments...

Neither spoke.

The only sound was the wind moving through the trees.

Finally...

The emperor broke the silence.

”Do you know why I prefer this place?”

Kael looked around.

”It has no walls.”

A faint smile crossed the emperor’s face.

”Correct.”

”A throne room reminds people who has power.”

”This place...”

He looked across the lake.

”...reminds me why power exists.”

The Question

The emperor turned.

His sharp golden eyes settled on Kael.

”You disagree with my decree.”

It wasn’t a question.

It was a statement.

Kael answered honestly.

”Yes.”

Commander Kane stiffened.

No prince had ever spoken so directly to the emperor.

Augustus simply nodded.

”I expected as much.”

He began walking around the lake.

Kael followed.

”Tell me.”

”If you were Emperor...”

”Would you have stopped me?”

Kael thought carefully.

Several minutes passed before he answered.

”I would’ve asked why.”

The emperor smiled.

”I know.”

”That’s why I asked you.”

A Lesson

The Emperor stopped beside an enormous oak tree.

Its trunk was so wide that five men couldn’t wrap their arms around it.

He placed one hand against the bark.

”Look at this tree.”

Kael did.

”It has one trunk.”

”Many branches.”

”If one branch grows diseased...”

”What happens?”

Kael answered.

”It weakens the tree.”

”And if the trunk ignores it?”

”The disease spreads.”

The emperor nodded.

”Exactly.”

Kael frowned.

”Then why separate the branches?”

The Emperor finally looked directly at him.

”Because...”

”I needed everyone to see the disease.”

Silence.

The Truth

”For years...”

The Emperor continued.

”I’ve received reports.”

”Main bloodline nobles abusing branch families.”

”Branch families secretly forming factions.”

”Governors favoring one over the other.”

”No one wished to speak openly.”

”They pretended everything was fine.”

He sighed.

”It wasn’t.”

”So...”

”I forced the Empire to look in the mirror.”

Kael’s eyes narrowed.

”You knew this would cause unrest.”

”I did.”

”You knew people would hate it.”

”I did.”

”You knew it might lead to rebellion.”

The Emperor closed his eyes.

”...Yes.”

Walter would’ve called him insane.

Most rulers would’ve avoided creating conflict.

But Augustus...

Had deliberately exposed it.

The Emperor’s Burden

”When I became emperor...”

Augustus said quietly.

”I believed peace meant preventing conflict.”

He laughed once.

A tired laugh.

”I was wrong.”

”Sometimes...”

”The greatest danger...”

”...is the conflict everyone refuses to acknowledge.”

He looked toward Kael.

”The Cor Decree didn’t create division.”

”It revealed it.”

Kael remained silent.

He understood the reasoning.

But...

He still didn’t agree with the method.

An Unexpected Offer

The emperor walked back toward the pavilion.

”I’ve watched you.”

”You don’t collect followers.”

”You earn them.”

”You rebuilt Blackwood.”

”You inspired Grom.”

”You gained the respect of Adrian.”

”You gave hope to the Cor families.”

He stopped.

Then he asked a question that stunned Kael.

”If I ordered you...”

”...to become my eyes throughout this empire...”

”...would you accept?”

Kael blinked.

”What do you mean?”

”I want reports.”

”Not from governors.”

”Not from nobles.”

”Not from ministers.”

”I want the truth.”

”Walk my roads.”

”Visit my villages.”

”Judge my officials.”

”Tell me what this empire truly looks like.”

Commander Kane’s eyes widened.

Only three people in Imperial history had ever received such authority.

All three became legendary statesmen.

The System

A golden screen appeared.

Legendary Quest Received: The Emperor’s Eyes

The Emperor has entrusted you with a task no prince has received in generations.

Objective:

Travel throughout the Empire and uncover its hidden truths.

Rewards:

Imperial Authority Token Leadership Growth Hidden System Evolution

Failure:

Loss of Imperial Trust.

Kael stared at the quest.

This wasn’t merely permission to travel.

It was permission...

To understand the Empire before ruling it.

One Final Warning

As Kael prepared to answer...

The Emperor spoke one last time.

”There is something else.”

His voice became serious.

”I don’t know who.”

”I don’t know why.”

”But someone inside this empire...”

”...is preparing for war.”

Kael’s heartbeat quickened.

He thought of the catacombs.

The hooded figures.

The Veiled Sage.

The Emperor continued.

”I’ve ruled for forty years.”

”I recognize the signs.”

”Money disappearing.”

”Weapons purchased in secret.”

”Influential nobles changing sides.”

He looked directly into Kael’s eyes.

”The first battle for this empire...”

”...will not be fought against another kingdom.”

”It will be fought...”

”...between its own people.”

The wind swept across the lake.

Neither man spoke.

Two generations.

Two visions.

One Empire.

And somewhere beyond the palace walls...

The first sparks of a future civil war between the main families and the branch families had already begun to burn.
