100 Chapter 100: The Children of the Emperor 2026-11-04

The morning sun slowly rose over Ashfall Village.

Smoke still drifted from the remains of burned homes.

Hammers echoed through the streets.

Children carried buckets of water.

Black Dragons worked alongside villagers, repairing fences and lifting collapsed beams.

There was no distinction between soldier and civilian.

Everyone worked together.

Kael stood atop a small hill overlooking the village.

The carved wooden dragon pendant hung around his neck.

Simple.

Rough.

Yet somehow...

It felt heavier than any royal medal.

Walter walked up beside him, carrying two wooden mugs.

”You’ve been staring at the village for half an hour.”

He handed one to Kael.

”Thinking?”

Kael accepted the drink.

”Learning.”

Walter chuckled.

”Same thing with more words.”

Kael laughed quietly.

”Maybe.”

His eyes wandered across the village.

Children were already playing despite yesterday’s tragedy.

Farmers repaired broken carts.

The elderly directed younger workers.

Life...

Moved forward.

His previous life flashed through his mind.

On Earth...

He had seen cities destroyed by disasters.

Some rebuilt.

Some never recovered.

The difference had never been money.

It had always been people.

”A kingdom isn’t its castles...”

”It’s the people willing to rebuild them.”

An Imperial Messenger

The peaceful morning was interrupted by the sound of galloping horses.

A rider wearing Imperial blue entered the village.

The horse was exhausted.

Its sides heaved with every breath.

The messenger immediately dismounted and knelt.

”Prince Kael!”

”I bear a message from His Imperial Majesty.”

Walter raised an eyebrow.

”That was fast.”

The messenger presented a sealed scroll.

Only the Emperor’s personal seal decorated the wax.

Kael broke it open.

His eyes scanned the letter.

To Kael Asterion, Tenth Prince of the Empire.

Reports of your actions at Ashfall Village have reached me.

You have fulfilled the first duty entrusted to you.

Continue your journey.

Do not return to the capital.

There are more places that require your eyes than my court.

Learn.

Listen.

Judge.

— Augustus Aurelius Asterion

The letter contained one more item.

A folded map.

Unlike ordinary Imperial maps...

Several locations had been marked with red ink.

Six provinces.

Nine villages.

Three frontier forts.

One abandoned mining town.

No explanations.

Only circles.

The system appeared.

???

Kael rolled up the map.

The Emperor wasn’t sending him home.

He was sending him across the Empire.

Farewell to Ashfall.

The village elder approached, carrying a small pouch.

”Your Highness...”

Kael smiled politely.

”If that’s money...”

”I can’t accept it.”

The old man laughed.

”I figured you’d say that.”

He opened the pouch.

Inside were dozens of small seeds.

”Frostgrain.”

”Our village’s greatest crop.”

Walter looked confused.

”...Seeds?”

The elder nodded proudly.

”They grow in poor soil.”

”They survive harsh winters.”

”They feed people when other crops fail.”

He placed the pouch into Kael’s hands.

”Plant them wherever you build.”

”Our village wants to help yours.”

Kael smiled warmly.

”This...”

”...is a gift I’ll gladly accept.”

Grom’s eyes softened.

”That is how alliances begin.”

Not through treaties.

Through trust.

On the Road Again

The Black Dragons mounted their horses.

Fifty riders.

One banner.

The black dragon insignia fluttered proudly above them.

Villagers lined both sides of the road.

Not because they had been ordered.

Because they wanted to.

An elderly woman waved.

A little girl saluted awkwardly.

The young boy with the wooden sword stood at the front of the crowd.

He shouted at the top of his lungs.

”Prince Kael!”

Kael turned his horse.

The boy grinned.

”When I grow up...”

”I’m going to join your army!”

Laughter spread through the crowd.

Kael smiled.

”I’ll be waiting.”

The Black Dragons rode east.

A New Companion

About an hour into the journey...

Leon slowed his horse.

”We’re being followed.”

Instantly, every soldier became alert.

Iris disappeared into the trees without a sound.

Walter rested a hand on his shield.

A rustle came from the bushes.

Then...

A boy stepped onto the road.

He looked no older than sixteen.

His clothes were patched.

A bow hung across his back.

He carried no family crest.

No weapon besides a hunting knife.

He immediately raised both hands.

”I surrender!”

Walter blinked.

”...We weren’t attacking.”

The boy swallowed nervously.

”I know.”

”I just wanted to make that clear.”

Kael dismounted.

”What is your name?”

The boy straightened his back.

”Rowan.”

”Just Rowan.”

”No family name?”

Rowan shook his head.

”I’m an orphan.”

”What do you want?”

Rowan hesitated.

Then took a deep breath.

”I want to join the Black Dragons.”

Several soldiers exchanged amused looks.

Walter laughed.

”We’re not recruiting.”

”I know.”

Rowan nodded.

”But someday you will.”

”I’ll wait until then.”

Kael studied the boy.

There was no arrogance.

Only determination.

”Why us?”

Rowan’s answer came without hesitation.

”I watched yesterday.”

”You didn’t save the village because you were ordered to.”

”You stayed after the battle.”

”You helped rebuild.”

He looked Kael directly in the eyes.

”No noble does that.”

Silence.

Kael remembered the little boy from the village.

”I’ll join your army.”

Perhaps...

Without realizing it...

He had already begun inspiring people.

”I can’t accept you today.”

Rowan lowered his head.

”I expected that.”

Kael continued.

”But...”

”When I hold my first military trials...”

”Come.”

”Earn your place.”

Rowan’s eyes widened.

”You mean it?”

Kael nodded.

”I won’t promise you a position.”

”I’ll only promise you a fair chance.”

The young hunter smiled brighter than the morning sun.

”That’s all I wanted.”

He stepped aside as the Black Dragons continued down the road.

Long after they disappeared over the hill...

Rowan remained standing there.

Watching the dragon banner vanish into the distance.

Quietly making a promise to himself.

”Next time we meet...”

”I’ll be strong enough to stand beside them.”

Elsewhere...

Far to the north...

Beyond the Empire’s borders...

Snow fell endlessly across towering white mountains.

Within an enormous palace carved from crystal ice...

A woman in flowing white robes stood before an ancient mirror.

The mirror’s frozen surface rippled.

For only a heartbeat...

It reflected a young man surrounded by frost.

Silver-blue ice spiraled around his hand.

The woman’s calm expression changed.

Impossible...

She whispered one name.

”...Kael.”

Far behind her...

The doors of the Frozen Throne Hall slowly opened.

Someone had heard.

And with that single glimpse...

The first thread connecting Kael to his mother’s homeland began to tighten.
