Demon Lord reborn as The Hero's Child

Kōya crossed the threshold of the abandoned outpost. The village beyond it was silent.

It was not merely quiet.

It was dead silent.

There is a profound, terrifying difference between the two.

A quiet village still breathed. It would have carried the occasional, ambient sound of a heavy wooden door opening, a draft horse shifting uneasily in its stable, a child crying somewhere in the distance, or the muffled, comfortable voices of people going about the mundane rhythm of their daily lives.

This village possessed none of that. It felt suffocated.

Kōya stood dead center in the middle of the muddy dirt road, his short, borrowed blade still hanging loosely at his side.

He slowly looked around.

Modest houses stood intact on both sides of the street. There were no scorch marks on the walls. No shattered windows. But some doors had been left completely open, swinging slightly in the wind.

Others had been left ajar, as though their occupants had simply vanished.

A wooden cart, half-loaded with sacks of grain, had been abandoned beside the central stone well. An empty wooden bucket lay overturned in the dirt, its spilled water long since absorbed into the dry, thirsty earth.

A child’s wooden toy rested forgotten beneath the shadow of a porch.

Kōya’s dark eyes moved methodically from one detail to another, his analytical mind trying to process the absolute absence of life.

There were no bodies. No blood. No animals. No voices.

Nothing.

His heart began beating faster, an erratic rhythm thumping against his ribs.

”Father...”

The single word escaped his mouth, quiet and fragile.

No answer came. Only the wind. Kōya immediately broke into a sprint.

He knew this village intimately. He knew every sudden turn. Every narrow dirt road. The architecture of every building. And he knew exactly, perfectly, where he needed to go.

Home.

Behind him, the massive hunting pack of demons that had aggressively pursued him through the Silverwood Forest finally emerged from the dark tree line.

One of the scarred trackers stepped cautiously onto the village road. It lifted its snout, sniffing the damp air.

”The boy is here.”

Another hulking demon looked down the row of silent houses, gripping a rusted iron club.

”The scent is strong. He just passed this way.”

The first demon suddenly froze. Its head snapped sharply toward the eastern edge of the village, completely abandoning the boy’s trail.

”What is that?”

The other demons stopped and followed its gaze. For a long moment, nothing happened. The village remained dead.

Then, a strange, suffocating pulse of highly condensed demonic energy rippled through the ambient air.

It was incredibly faint but undeniably unnatural.

It was a deliberate pattern. A recognizable, calculated fluctuation of dark energy that seemed to originate somewhere deep in the forest, far beyond the eastern boundary of the village.

One of the tracker demons narrowed its glowing eyes. ”There.”

Another growled low in its throat, gripping its weapon tighter. ”That isn’t the boy.”

”No.” The lead demon stared intently toward the distant, dark forest, recognizing the sheer weight of the signature.

”Something else has appeared. Something ancient.”

The hunting group exchanged calculating, predatory glances.

The boy was already deep inside the abandoned village. They knew exactly where his scent was leading. There was absolutely no need to chase him blindly through the streets and risk an ambush.

One of the commanders pointed a heavy, clawed finger toward the eastern forest. ”We investigate that signature first. It is a priority.”

”And the boy?”

”He won’t leave the village.” The commander smiled, a cruel, jagged expression. ”We know exactly where he will be.”

The demons turned away from Kōya’s path. They melted silently between the buildings, heading toward the strange, pulsing demonic pattern in the east.

For the moment, Kōya was left entirely alone.

He knew absolutely nothing of the tactical shift that had just occurred behind him. He only knew one thing.

He desperately needed to find his father. Kōya reached the edge of his property. He stopped so abruptly that his boots scraped violently against the dirt path, carving deep lines.

The front door of his home stood ajar. He stared at it, his chest heaving.

”Father?”

Nothing.

He stepped onto the porch and pushed the heavy wooden door wider. It creaked loudly in the silence.

”Mother?”

Still nothing. Kōya stepped inside. The house was exactly as he remembered it. The sturdy wooden furniture. The fading paint on the walls. The familiar, comfortable arrangement of everything his mother had meticulously cared for.

For one brief, desperate moment, his mind absolutely refused to accept that anything was wrong. They were just out in the garden. They were visiting a neighbor.

Then, he smelled something.

Food.

Kōya turned slowly toward the dining room.

The heavy oak table stood in the center of the room. Two plates had been perfectly prepared and set. A large, hearty meal sat exactly in the center of the table.

Steam was still faintly rising from the bowls.

Kōya stared at the table, his eyes widening slightly.

It looked exactly as though someone had cooked it only moments ago. The physical warmth was still radiating from the ceramic.

The rich aroma of spices and roasted meat still filled the room, battling the metallic scent of his own bloody clothes.

His mother had always prepared dinner precisely around this time. His father would usually sit in his chair and loudly complain that he was starving before she had even finished serving the plates.

Kōya took a slow, agonizing step toward the table.

”Mom?”

Absolute silence.

He looked at the wooden chairs. They were empty. One had been pushed back slightly, as if someone had stood up in a hurry.

His gaze moved back to the food.

Something was wrong. Very, very wrong.

He reached out, holding his bare hand just an inch above one of the dishes.

Still warm.

Someone had been here. Recently. Within the hour.

Kōya’s brilliant, analytical mind began to process the variables. If the meal had been fully prepared only moments ago, then whoever had cooked it had left shortly before he arrived.

But why? Where had they gone? Why hadn’t they taken their weapons?

He looked around the pristine room.

Then, his eyes caught something near the entryway leading to the back door.

A dark, wet stain on the floorboards.

Blood.

Kōya crouched low. His fingers hovered just above the dark liquid. He didn’t touch it. His eyes narrowed into dangerous slits.

There was another, larger stain slightly further away. And another.

He followed the horrific trail. The blood became fainter, smeared against the wood, as it moved toward the back of the house.

Kōya pushed the back door open and stepped outside into the yard. There were deep, chaotic marks in the dirt. Something heavy had been dragged.

He closed his eyes, extending his senses. There were faint, lingering traces of chaotic demonic energy mixed with the heavy scent of ozone and holy light.

Kōya’s expression changed.

The fear crystallized into cold certainty.

”A fight...”

He looked toward the dark tree line behind the house. The violent trail continued directly between the trees. His father had gone that way.

Kōya didn’t hesitate. He ran.

The forest swallowed him instantly. Low branches scratched against his face and tore at his damp clothes as he pushed aggressively deeper into the woods. The traces of combat became clear and increasingly terrifying.

Massive, ancient branches had been snapped clean off. Deep, catastrophic cuts were carved into the thick tree trunks. Huge patches of undergrowth had been entirely scorched by explosive magic. Fragments of shattered stone littered the path.

Kōya’s pace slowed.

Someone had fought a desperate battle here. And it had not been an ordinary skirmish. The wounds carved into the trees were enormous. Some trunks had been sheared nearly halfway through by a blade wielded with unimaginable strength. Others had been blasted apart by high-tier magic.

Kōya crouched beside one of the deepest gashes in a tree trunk. He touched the ground beneath it.

More blood. His heart tightened painfully against his ribs.

”Father...”

He stood up. Then, he sensed something.

A presence. It was incredibly weak. Faint. Flickering like a dying candle in a storm.

But it was familiar. Kōya’s eyes widened. He sprinted.

The dense trees gradually thinned out. A small, shadowed clearing appeared ahead.

And there, slumped beneath the heavy branches of an ancient, massive oak tree, someone was leaning heavily against the trunk.

Kōya stopped dead.

His breath caught violently in his throat.

The man’s body was covered in catastrophic wounds.

His casual clothing was torn to shreds. Thick, dark blood had soaked almost the entirety of his body, pooling in the dirt beneath him. One scarred hand rested weakly against the rough bark of the tree, desperately trying to support his failing weight.

His head was lowered, his chin resting against his chest.

For one agonizing moment, Kōya couldn’t command his legs to move. Then, the figure slowly, painfully lifted his head. Their eyes met across the clearing.

Kōya knew those eyes. He had known them his entire life.

”Father...”

The man smiled. It was a weak, blood-stained expression. But it was unmistakably warm.

”Kōya...”

Seiya’s voice was barely more than a wet, rattling whisper.

”You’re back.”
