Demon Lord reborn as The Hero's Child

Kōya bent forward, pressing both of his hands flat against the cold stone, and sobbed.

The morning rain began falling, washing the soot from the air. It soaked his dark hair. It soaked his torn clothes. It washed the blood from his hands and turned the scattered ashes around his knees into dark mud.

”I should have been there,” his voice was barely a ragged whisper against the stone.

”I should have held her hand.”

His fist struck the slate.

”I should have protected her.”

Another strike.

”I should have saved her.”

The stone roof fractured violently beneath his knuckles.

His breathing became ragged, pulling in the scent of ash and rain. He slowly lifted his head, looking out over the edge of the roof toward the burning town below.

He saw the retreating demons. He saw the corrupt human soldiers. He saw the cowardly slave traders whipping their wagons. Every single entity that had participated in this atrocity.

Something deep inside Kōya finally broke.

His head lifted fully. His eyes were no longer simply dark; they were completely, terrifyingly empty. Two abyssal voids devoid of all human mercy.

The air pressure abruptly changed. A suffocating, apocalyptic weight spread across the entire ruined settlement.

The surviving demons in the streets below froze in their tracks.

Kōya stood up. His body shook with the sheer magnitude of the power he was drawing.

The Demon Lord did not simply awaken. Kōya had finally stopped holding the darkness inside him back.

Violet-black flames exploded outward from Kōya’s feet in a massive, radial shockwave.

The remaining demons did not even have time to scream.

The wave of dark energy crossed the streets with the speed of a hurricane. Every single demon caught within the blast radius instantly ignited in violet fire. Human slave traders screamed in agony as their flesh melted. Some dropped their weapons and begged for mercy. Others tried frantically to outrun the blast.

The flames ruthlessly hunted them down.

The destruction was not indiscriminate. The dark power actively flowed around the terrified, huddled civilians. It ignored the retreating students. It bypassed those who were simply trying to survive the morning.

But those who had carried the iron chains, those who had hunted innocent people for profit, those who had participated willingly in the slaughter of the innocent...

They burned until there was nothing left but scorched shadows on the cobblestones.

The iron cages melted open. The surviving prisoners stumbled away, weeping in disbelief. Some people fell to their knees in prayer. Others simply stared up in absolute terror at the boy standing on the roof, wreathed in apocalyptic fire.

The violet flames consumed the battlefield, cleansing the town of the rot.

Then, gradually, the dark inferno weakened.

Kōya’s aura flickered and died. His knees buckled, nearly sending him to the ground. He had released far too much raw power in a single burst. The ancient, consuming darkness inside him retreated back into the vault, leaving behind a profound, hollow exhaustion.

Kōya barely noticed the physical toll.

He bent down and picked up his sword from the slate.

Then, he began walking.

Just like Kaela, hundreds of miles away. No destination. No tactical plan. Just the absolute necessity of movement.

He walked down the side of the collapsed building. A surviving, half-burned demon dragged itself into his path. Kōya decapitated it without breaking stride. A slave trader scrambled out of an alley, trying to run. Kōya threw a dagger, severing his spine. Another demon charged blindly from the smoke. Another body fell in pieces.

He walked through the smoldering ruins without speaking a single word.

The rain continued to fall steadily. Every heavy step carried him further from the roof where Yuna had disappeared.

And yet, he couldn’t leave her behind.

”Yuna...” His voice was entirely empty, a ghost haunting its own body.

He took another step.

”I should have been there.”

Another.

”I should have come sooner.”

Another.

”I should have held your hand.”

The tip of his dark sword dragged lightly against the wet cobblestones, leaving a thin line in the mud.

”Yuna...”

The road ahead leading out of the town was obscured by mist and rain.

Then, he saw movement.

A large caravan. Several figures were approaching rapidly on foot through the gray mist.

Kōya barely looked at them. He adjusted his grip on his sword and continued walking, prepared to slaughter whoever stepped into his path.

”Kōya!”

He stopped.

The voice called out again, cracking with emotion.

”Kōya!”

Haru.

Kōya turned his head slowly.

Haru was sprinting down the ruined road toward him, abandoning the safety of the group. Aoi was running right behind him. Kaela’s former fellow instructors flanked them, and several surviving students followed closely behind the wagons.

Haru reached Kōya first.

He didn’t stop. He didn’t ask for a tactical report. He simply grabbed Kōya by the shoulders and pulled him into a fierce, desperate hug.

Kōya froze entirely, his arms hanging uselessly at his sides, his sword still dripping rain and blood.

Haru was openly weeping.

”We know,” Haru sobbed, burying his face in Kōya’s shoulder.

Kōya’s expression remained terrifyingly empty.

”We saw the blast from the walls. We saw what happened.” Haru tightened his arms, holding Kōya together. ”You did everything you could, man. You did everything.”

Kōya’s lips trembled violently. The dam finally cracked. ”I couldn’t save her.”

Haru’s voice broke. ”I know.”

Aoi reached them a second later. She didn’t hesitate. She threw her arms around Kōya as well, pressing her face against his back.

”We’re so sorry,” she cried.

Kōya’s knees finally gave way under the immense weight of the morning.

Haru caught him before he hit the mud, bearing his weight. Kōya buried his face against his best friend’s shoulder, his fingers digging desperately into Haru’s torn uniform.

The agonizing sob he had been holding back in the silence of his own mind finally tore its way free.

Haru cried with him. Aoi cried with them.

Then, Kaela’s old colleagues—hardened veterans of the Academy—gathered around in a protective circle. No one tried to offer empty platitudes. No one ordered Kōya to stop crying. No one demanded that he be strong for the survivors.

They simply held him in the rain.

For the first time since Yuna’s soul had disappeared into the light, Kōya was not entirely alone.

The rain continued falling over the ruined town.

But eventually, hours later, the downpour stopped. The heavy clouds began to break apart, allowing warm, golden sunlight to finally touch the muddy, blood-stained road.

Kōya slowly lifted his face from Haru’s shoulder.

His eyes were swollen. His body was pushed beyond the limits of physical exhaustion. His heart felt irreparably broken.

But somewhere, buried deep beneath the ash and the grief, something else remained.

A warmth. Small. Incredibly fragile. Almost impossible to feel beneath the cold. But it was there.

He remembered Yuna’s final, echoing words.

I’ll be waiting. In every life.

And he remembered his vow. He would find her. No matter what shape she took, no matter how many lifetimes he had to cross.

Kōya closed his eyes, taking a deep, shuddering breath. Then, he opened them again. The emptiness was gone, replaced by a cold, sharp, unyielding resolve.

”We’re leaving.”

Haru looked at him, wiping his face. ”Leaving? To go where?”

Kōya looked down the long, muddy road leading away from the burning valley.

”Anywhere that takes us away from here.”

The surviving caravan slowly began moving.

Kōya climbed heavily into the back of the last wagon. He sat in absolute silence, watching the ruined town and the shattered Academy disappear behind the rolling hills.

But inside his chest, another dark promise had already crystallized.

The people responsible for Yuna’s death had not escaped justice. They had merely bought themselves time.

He would find the Demon Peer.

He would find the King of Slane.

He would tear apart the empire that had created this nightmare piece by piece.

And one day... he would make them answer in blood for the morning they had stolen.

The caravan continued down the rutted road. The rain had completely stopped on their side of the border. Sunlight finally touched the wooden wheels, warming the damp earth.

Kōya stared out through the opening of the canvas wagon. The world ahead was vast, hostile, and entirely unknown.

But he knew one absolute truth.

He would keep walking. He had to.

Because somewhere, far beyond this life, beyond the blood and the fire... someone was waiting for him.

Far away, across the continent, the rain had not stopped.

It fell relentlessly across the muddy, winding roads deep inside Slane Territory.

A lone beastwoman walked slowly through a dark, flooded alleyway.

Her dark hair was plastered to her face. Her eyes were completely empty, staring blindly ahead. Her movements were stiff, mechanical, the shuffle of a ghost haunting the living world.

Kaela.

She had been walking for hours. Perhaps days. She no longer knew. Time had lost all meaning.

”Master...” Her voice was barely audible over the drumming rain.

”Yuna...”

She kept walking, her boots dragging in the mud.

Then, a harsh, amused voice echoed from behind her.

”Hold on there.”

Kaela stopped, but she didn’t turn around.

Two wealthy, well-dressed slave merchants stepped out from beneath the awning of a covered, iron-barred carriage.

One of them stared at her back, his eyes narrowing as he assessed her build. Then, his eyes widened with greedy interest.

”Well, well.” He stepped closer, circling her slowly. ”Look what we found wandering in the mud.”

The second merchant examined Kaela with a clinical, predatory eye.

A powerful beastwoman. Tall. Heavily scarred. Intensely muscular. Her clothing was torn from the wilderness. Her weapons were gone.

But she was alive. And that was the only metric that mattered to their ledger.

”She’ll sell well in the fighting pits,” the first merchant noted, pulling a pair of heavy iron manacles from his belt.

”Very well.” The second man looked her over again, checking her teeth and the tone of her arms. ”Make sure you keep her in good condition on the transport.”

The merchant smiled, a cruel, satisfied expression. ”Any other injuries?”

”Nothing that will affect her value.”

”Good. Then she’s worth the transport.”

The cold iron manacles snapped shut around Kaela’s wrists.

Kaela didn’t react. She didn’t fight back. She didn’t summon her aura. She simply stood in the freezing rain, her head bowed.

Her eyes remained entirely empty. She heard their crude words. She felt the heavy iron biting into her skin. But the sensations no longer seemed to belong to her reality.

”Master...”

A single tear mixed with the rain running down her scarred cheek.

”Yuna...”

The merchants exchanged satisfied, greedy looks, completely unaware of the lethal weapon they were currently chaining. They had found valuable merchandise to replace what the war had cost them.

Kaela had lost everything she had ever cared about.

And neither side of the muddy road had any idea what waited for them at the end of it.

The caravan carrying Kōya disappeared beyond the eastern hills, moving toward an unknown horizon.

The merchants led Kaela in the opposite direction, dragging her deeper into Slane.

Two roads.

Two broken souls.

Two lives moving in opposite directions from the same ruined morning.

And somewhere beyond those roads, destiny waited for them both.
