Demon Lord reborn as The Hero's Child

The burning gates of the Academy disappeared behind him.

The road leading down the western ridge opened into a sprawling landscape of ash, smoke, and unchecked fire. The lower town had been entirely reduced to a graveyard.

Kōya ran faster, channeling raw aura into his legs, blurring down the embankment. Every ancient, blood-soaked instinct inside his soul screamed that something was catastrophically wrong.

He vaulted over the first shattered barricade. Then the second.

The road was choked with the dead. Slain demons. Butchered soldiers. Crushed civilians. The smell of burning wood and scorched flesh thickened the air until it was difficult to breathe.

Then, through the gray haze, he saw it.

The orphanage. Or what remained of it.

The roof had collapsed inward. The walls were scorched black. The small, quiet courtyard where Yuna had gathered flowers was completely empty, covered in ash.

Kōya stopped, his boots sliding in the mud.

No Yuna.

His eyes frantically scanned the ruined street, searching for any sign of lightning, any flash of her sword.

Then, he heard something.

A voice. A low, guttural, wet laugh. It was entirely non-human.

Kōya pivoted smoothly, his blade rising.

A creature stood near the remains of a collapsed stone tavern. It was unlike the hulking brutes he had slaughtered at the Academy. Its body was spindly and elongated, wrapped in a black, leathery membrane. And in the center of its malformed skull was a single, enormous, unblinking eye.

The eye was glowing with a sickly pale light. A complex magical projection hovered in the air directly above it.

Kōya’s expression shifted, recognizing the arcane signature.

”A transmission demon.”

The creature’s massive eye swiveled toward him. The magical image hovering above it violently flickered, the connection disrupted by his sudden presence.

For one agonizing instant, Kōya saw the projection clearly before the demon severed the feed.

He saw Yuna.

She was restrained on a rooftop. Pinned down by thick, pulsing ropes of blood. She was surrounded by leering, heavily armed soldiers.

It was the exact same horrific scene Kaela had been forced to watch—a tragedy he had arrived too late to prevent.

The blood in Kōya’s veins turned to absolute ice.

The transmission demon hadn’t been fighting. It had been watching. Recording. Relaying her torture to someone far away.

Kōya’s eyes went completely, terrifyingly dead. He looked at the creature.

His sword was resting in his hand. His fingers tightened around the hilt until the leather grip groaned.

Deep inside the sealed vaults of his soul, the Demon Lord woke up.

Darkness flooded out. It didn’t engulf him completely; he maintained his grip on his humanity. But it was enough. A thick, violent layer of violet-black energy erupted from his palm, wrapping tightly around the length of the steel like smoking chains.

The transmission demon recoiled in sheer terror. Its enormous eye dilated completely, recognizing the suffocating pressure of an apex predator.

It turned to flee.

Kōya threw the sword.

The blade tore through the smoky air. It spun. Once. Twice. The rotation accelerated violently until the sword became a screaming, circular wheel of pure dark energy.

The demon didn’t even make it three steps.

The sword struck.

The transmission demon was cleaved cleanly in two from the crown of its eye to its groin.

Violet-black flames erupted from the bisected wound, instantly incinerating the cursed flesh.

The creature collapsed, smoking ash. The magical projection shattered into nothingness.

Kōya didn’t wait to retrieve his weapon. He sprinted toward the tavern roof.

He scaled the stone wall in two massive leaps, hauling himself over the ledge.

Then, he saw them.

Four massive, elite demonic soldiers stood in a circle. In the center, pinned to the broken slate by thick, writhing blood whips, was Yuna.

Her body was barely moving. Her uniform was torn. The jagged black curse had spread aggressively across her pale skin, reaching up her neck and down her arms, pulsing with a sickly light.

One of the demons, laughing a wet, guttural laugh, stepped closer, reaching down toward her collar.

Kōya’s mind went entirely blank.

The laughing demon stopped abruptly. Its heavy hand hovered in the air. A thin, perfectly horizontal line suddenly appeared across its thick torso.

For one second, nothing happened.

Then, the top half of its body slid sickeningly off the bottom half. The creature collapsed into two separate, heavy pieces, its blood splashing across the slate.

The remaining three soldiers spun around, raising their weapons.

They looked toward the edge of the roof.

Kōya stood there, the smoke swirling around his boots. His sword had somehow returned to his hand. The violet-black flames were still burning fiercely along the razor edge, hissing in the damp morning air.

He didn’t speak a single word.

He simply moved.

He didn’t run; he vanished. He crossed the roof and landed directly beside Yuna.

One of the demons roared, pulling hard on the blood whip wrapped around Yuna’s wrist to use her as a shield.

Kōya didn’t swing his sword. He drove his free fist directly into the center of the demon’s chest.

The kinetic impact was akin to a siege engine.

The force drove the massive creature backward and downward so hard that it cratered the stone roof beneath its body, instantly liquefying its organs.

Another demon attacked from his blind spot, swinging a heavy iron axe toward his neck.

Kōya pivoted smoothly. His dark sword flashed upward in a violet arc.

The demon’s arms, weapon, and head were severed in a single, flawless strike.

The final soldier hesitated, taking a terrified half-step backward.

That microscopic hesitation killed it. Kōya crossed the distance in a blur. The dark blade severed the demon’s spine, ending its life before it could even draw breath to scream.

Absolute silence returned to the roof, broken only by the distant crackle of the burning town.

Kōya spun around, immediately dropping to his knees beside Yuna.

With the death of the soldiers and the sheer proximity of his dark aura, the blood restraints holding her down finally lost their magical cohesion. The whips dissolved into useless puddles of dark crimson.

Yuna’s body sagged limply against the cold slate.

Kōya caught her before her head could strike the stone.

”Yuna.”

She didn’t respond. Her head rolled loosely against his arm.

He frantically tore away the remaining sticky residue of the blood restraints from her bruised wrists. Her body felt frighteningly, impossibly light in his arms, as if the gravity holding her to the earth had been severed.

Kōya immediately shrugged off his heavy outer uniform jacket. He wrapped it carefully around her shoulders, shielding her torn clothing and shivering skin from the biting chill of the morning air.

”Yuna.” He gently brushed the soot-stained hair from her face.

Her eyelids fluttered. Slowly, painfully, they opened.

For several agonizing seconds, she simply stared up at him, her dark eyes unfocused, as if trying to place him in a dream.

Then, her pale lips parted.

”Kōya...”

His throat tightened so fiercely he could barely force air past the knot. ”I am here.”

Her fingers, stained with blood and soot, trembled violently. She slowly lifted her right hand.

Kōya caught it instantly, pressing her palm gently against the side of his face. Her fingers were terrifyingly cold.

”You came,” she whispered, her voice barely a breath against the wind.

”Of course I came.”

A faint, fragile smile appeared on her lips. ”I knew you would. I told them you would.”

Kōya pulled her closer, pressing his forehead against hers, closing his eyes against the sting. ”You are safe now.” He said it immediately. He said it with the absolute, unyielding certainty of a king commanding reality to obey him. As though simply speaking the words aloud could rewrite history and make it true.

Yuna sighed, her body relaxing completely against his chest.

For the very first time since he had woken to the alarm, Kōya allowed himself to draw a full, deep breath.

He had found her. He had slaughtered the monsters. He had destroyed the transmission. She was breathing. She was in his arms.

He had made it in time. He had saved her.

Then, his eyes moved downward.

The heavy jacket he had draped over her had slipped slightly, exposing her collarbone.

The jagged black markings of the Demon Peer’s curse had not stopped spreading when the blood whips broke. They were darker than before, pulsing with a sickly, necrotic energy. They were no longer confined to her forehead and neck; they had branched outward beneath her skin like a spiderweb of poison, wrapping around her chest, creeping down her arms, sinking deep into her veins.

Kōya’s expression shattered.

He immediately pressed his bare hand flat against her sternum. He closed his eyes and searched for the brilliant, crackling storm of her lightning aura.

He found almost nothing. Just a faint, dying ember buried beneath an ocean of dark magic.

He pushed his own aura into her, desperately trying to jumpstart the connection.

Still nothing. The curse greedily swallowed his energy, shielding her core.

Kōya’s breathing stopped completely.

The curse was doing exactly what the Demon Peer had promised. It was systematically severing her from her power. It was eating her magic, and now, it was beginning to shut down the physical vessel left behind. Her body was failing.

Yuna watched his face. She felt the frantic pressure of his hand against her chest. She saw the absolute terror bleeding into his usually impenetrable dark eyes.

She understood immediately.

”Kōya?” she murmured.

He didn’t answer. His brilliant mind was racing at a thousand miles an hour, desperately calculating every single variable. He ran through every medical technique he had learned in two lifetimes. Every dark healing method. Every complex magical theory. Every impossible, forbidden spell.

Nothing. He had absolutely nothing that could unravel a curse this deeply entrenched without instantly killing the host.

There had to be something. There had to be a way to fix this.

He had crossed the entire burning battlefield. He had butchered every single monster standing between them. He had reached her.

He could not lose her now. Not here. Not on a filthy roof in the ashes of her home.

Not after yesterday. Not after they had sat by the lake. Not after she had kissed him, asked him to wait for the morning, and entrusted him with the heaviest piece of her soul.

Not after he had finally, truly realized exactly what she meant to him.

Kōya tightened his arms around her, pulling her small frame fiercely against his chest as if he could physically shield her from death itself.

”You are safe,” he said, his voice cracking, the tactical, emotionless cadence completely destroyed. ”I will fix this. I swear to you, I will fix this.”

Yuna looked up at him quietly, her eyes clear despite the spreading darkness in her veins.

Then, she smiled.

It wasn’t the relieved smile of someone who believed they were going to survive.

It was the soft, heartbreakingly gentle smile of someone who was simply grateful that the person they loved had tried.

Kōya stared down at her face.

Something deep inside the core of his soul began to violently tremble.

He had won the battle. He had defeated the demons. He had reached her in time. He had saved her from the horror of the soldiers.

So why...

Why did she still look exactly like someone saying goodbye?
