Demon Lord reborn as The Hero's Child

The noise hit him first. It lacked the metallic shriek of clashing steel or the wet, heavy sounds of a battlefield, yet it was a suffocating tide all the same.

Hundreds of human voices echoed off the vaulted stone ceilings of the Royal Academy, rising and falling in a chaotic, ambient hum.

Kōya paused at the threshold of the lecture hall, his thumb resting instinctively against the worn leather strap of his satchel—a lingering reflex from a lifetime of checking his scabbard. He had expected a school.

He had walked into a monument of sheer, arrogant excess. The room alone swallowed the space of an entire village, its tiered oak desks curving outward like a grand amphitheater. Arched glass stretched from the polished floor to the ceiling, fracturing the morning light so that dust motes drifted through the beams like suspended ash. Above, spheres of condensed mana hovered among the rafters, casting a pale, sterile glow that defied the daylight bleeding through the windows.

At the front of the room, a massive slate dominated the wall, its surface crawling with silver lines of raw energy. The mana rearranged itself autonomously, shifting into complex geometric equations and diagrams as if the stone itself were thinking. Kōya stared, his jaw tightening.

It was an absurd waste of resources. His past life had demanded absolute utility: fortresses existed to break sieges, watchtowers to spot advancing slaughter, and magical arrays to kill, defend, or trap. But this place—with its sprawling gardens manicured for aesthetics rather than sustenance, its soaring libraries, and courtyards built merely for loitering—was profoundly, dangerously inefficient.

And yet, the sheer audacity of it anchored his gaze.

”Initiate Kōya,” the professor’s voice sliced through the ambient hum, dry and authoritative.

Kōya’s spine snapped straight, a physical reflex forged in a prior era. ”Yes, Professor.”

The old mage offered a curt nod, gesturing to the tiered rows. ”You may take your seat.”

Moving with silent, measured steps, Kōya claimed an empty desk near the periphery, automatically securing a tactical vantage point. As he settled, the chatter around him swelled once more, transitioning from quiet murmurs into a rising drone. He folded his hands over the smooth oak and listened to the mundane pulse of student life.

”My father says the northern kingdoms are going to increase their mana tariffs,” a girl whispered a few rows down.

”That’s impossible.”

”I heard it from my uncle.”

”Your uncle is a merchant.”

”Exactly.”

A few seats away, two boys were bickering over swordsmanship, their voices tinged with the arrogance of youth.

”No, I’m telling you, reinforcement doesn’t begin with the arms,” the first boy insisted, leaning heavily onto his elbows.

”It obviously does.”

”The mana needs to circulate through the core first. That’s not what Instructor Valen taught.”

”Then Instructor Valen is a fool,” the second boy shot back.

Kōya’s eyes flicked toward them, instantly cataloging their flaws. Their mana flow was crude. Their posture was disastrous. The first boy leaned too heavily forward when he spoke; a strike to his left blind spot would shatter his ribs before he could draw breath. The second kept his weapon-shoulder tight, ruining his center of gravity—a simple parry would sever his balance entirely.

Kōya exhaled a slow, quiet breath, forcing the tension out of his muscles. He was doing it again, treating children like enemy combatants. Scanning the rest of the hall, he realized nobody else was evaluating the room for lethal threats. He needed to adapt.

When the professor cleared his throat and the lesson on magical theory commenced, Kōya braced himself for the tedious repetition of basic ignition spells. He was wrong. The professor spoke of elemental resistance, of atmospheric resonance, and of the brutal physiological toll mana exacted upon human bone and tissue.

The slate illuminated with complex, interlocking theorems, illustrating that magic was not merely fuel for destruction. It possessed a pulse. An underlying, invisible architecture. Different affinities generated distinct friction against reality itself.

For three hundred years, Raizen had bypassed this entirely. He had gripped the throat of reality and commanded it to burn. Power had always answered him; he had never bothered to learn the language of magic because he had only ever screamed at it.

Now, leaning forward in a wooden desk, Kōya was looking at the anatomy of a spell—the delicate, fragile bones of an incantation before the fire was lit. It was humbling, entirely alien, and he found himself deeply fascinated by it.

An hour bled away before the chime sounded. It wasn’t bronze striking metal, but a concussive wave of auditory mana that rippled through the academy walls. The room instantly shattered into motion. Chairs scraped sharply against polished wood, leather bindings snapped shut, and bodies crowded the exits in a sudden tide.

Kōya remained still, watching the chaos unfold until the professor calmly gathered his notes. ”Your next class begins in twenty minutes. Do not be late.”

Finally standing, Kōya unfurled the parchment map they had handed him during registration. It was a sprawling labyrinth of ink detailing multiple districts, dozens of unlabeled structures, and a bewildering array of arcane symbols. He stared at it. Ten seconds passed. Twenty. The ink offered no tactical advantage.

”This topography is severely flawed,” he murmured.

”You’re holding it upside down.”

Kōya froze. His eyes shifted laterally toward the voice. A boy leaned casually against the adjacent desk, sporting messy brown hair and eyes entirely too bright for a place that trained soldiers. He wore an expression of absolute, unearned familiarity.

Looking down at the parchment, Kōya rotated it one hundred and eighty degrees. ”...I was aware.”

The boy grinned. ”Sure you were.”

Kōya assessed him. No killing intent. No hidden steel. Just a blind, foolish openness.

The boy thrust a hand forward. ”I’m Haru.”

Kōya stared at the open palm. A greeting. He had signed treaties that ended dynasties, ordered the execution of traitors, and watched empires turn to glass beneath his heel. Nothing in those centuries had prepared him to simply shake a hand.

He gripped it firmly. ”Kōya.”

”I know.”

Kōya’s gaze sharpened. ”You know?”

Haru looked genuinely confused. ”Everyone knows. Because the professor literally just introduced you.”

”...Right.” Kōya mentally logged the data. Social interaction, it seemed, lacked tactical depth.

Haru nodded toward the parchment. ”Where are you supposed to be?”

”Advanced magical theory.”

Haru’s face brightened instantly. ”Me too.”

”Then you can guide me,” Kōya said, his tone flat.

”Yep.” Haru turned his back and began walking—a fatal vulnerability, but Kōya followed anyway. After three steps, Haru stopped short and glanced back. ”You’re really quiet.”

”I am aware.”

”You always like this?”

”Generally.”

Haru chewed on the thought for a second, shrugged, and said, ”Okay,” before continuing down the hall.

Kōya studied the back of his neck. That was it? No interrogation? No probing into his lineage or suspicion regarding his silent demeanor? It was a dangerous lack of self-preservation.

They emerged from the corridor onto a vast, open balcony overlooking a central courtyard. Ancient flora towered over the cobblestones below, their luminous leaves casting a faint, emerald haze across the stone. The sheer diversity of the crowd was staggering. Dwarves argued loudly beside a sculpted fountain.

Two beastfolk sprinted past them, blurring with raw speed. An elf sat perfectly still in the shade of a silverwood tree, reading, while human students practiced low-tier incantations near the stairs. A dozen different species existing in the same space without drawing blades.

Kōya’s pace slowed, the air heavy with the sheer impossibility of it.

Noticing the lag, Haru glanced back. ”First time seeing a mixed crowd?”

”Yes.”

”You’ll adapt.”

Kōya looked down at the courtyard, his voice quiet. ”I severely doubt that.”

Haru just laughed, the sound easy and unburdened. They reached the next lecture hall, where students were already filling the rows. Kōya selected an empty seat, and Haru immediately dropped into the chair directly beside him.

”You know,” Haru whispered, leaning over, ”you’re going to need friends in this place.”

Kōya turned, his gaze cold and flat. ”I am aware.”

Haru blinked. ”That sounded weirdly like a threat.”

”It was a statement of fact.”

”Good to know.”

Kōya analyzed the concept. He understood loyalty and alliances forged through mutual necessity. He understood how to weigh a man’s life against his utility on the battlefield. But casual camaraderie defied logic. ”What are the exact criteria?” Kōya asked.

Haru stared at him. ”What?”

”To qualify as a friend. What is the required metric?”

Haru looked deeply confused before a slow smile cracked his face, quickly deteriorating into a quiet, shaking laugh.

Kōya frowned. ”Explain.”

”Nothing.” Haru wiped a tear from his eye. ”You’re just weird, man.”

”I have been told that,” Kōya accepted without offense.

Haru leaned closer, still grinning. ”Look, Kōya. There is no metric. You don’t need criteria. You just hang out with someone.”

Kōya stared at him, trying to process the flaw in that logic. ”That is all?”

”Pretty much.”

”That is dangerously inefficient.”

Haru choked back another laugh, turning to face the front of the room. Kōya sighed internally. The academy was going to be an entirely different kind of war.

Dusk bled across the academy grounds. By the time the final bell echoed through the stone, Kōya had categorized three absolute truths. First, the academy was vastly larger than any practical institution required. Second, the underlying mathematics of magic held a brutal, elegant logic. Third, Haru had somehow established himself as an ally.

Kōya was not entirely certain when the contract had been finalized. They had simply consumed rations together in the dining hall. Haru had complained about a strict instructor, Kōya had pointed out the instructor’s strategic validity, and they had argued until Haru had casually declared,

*”We’re friends now.”* Kōya had stared, and Haru had stared back, neither fully grasping why the dynamic felt secure.

Stepping out from the shadow of the main archway, Kōya watched the white stone spires ignite with the amber hues of a dying sun. Magical braziers flickered to life along the pathways, casting long, sharp shadows over the remaining students.

They carried heavy tomes, dragging exhausted limbs toward the dormitories, complaining about the cold evening air and laughing over trivial mistakes made during drills. There was no mobilization. No distant war drums. No smell of burning thatch or scorched iron.

Just life. Small, fragile, and meaningless in the grand calculus of survival—yet it carried a strange, heavy gravity.

Looking up at the darkening sky, Kōya realized that for centuries, he had assumed peace was merely a void, the empty silence left behind when the screaming finally stopped. Now, he was beginning to understand it was something entirely different.

It was noisy. It was cluttered and deeply inconvenient. It was a boy named Haru deciding a stranger was an ally without demanding a single drop of blood as proof.

A faint, nearly imperceptible smile ghosted across Kōya’s lips. Perhaps this was acceptable. He reached into his pocket, his fingers brushing the rigid edge of his identification card. *Kōya.* No family crest, no cursed lineage, no throne woven from the ribs of his enemies. For the first time in his existence, the title did not feel hollow. It felt like bedrock.

But as the shadows lengthened across the courtyard, the ambient temperature subtly dropped. Beyond the iron gates, deep within the sprawling, ancient architecture of the academy, something shifted in the dark. A gaze, cold and deliberate, locked onto the back of his neck.

Kōya did not notice it. Not yet. The academy was a monument to peace, but in his experience, fortresses of peace were only built so they could eventually be breached. For now, however, he simply turned his collar against the wind and walked toward the dormitories. Tomorrow would bring another lecture, another mundane conversation, another ordinary day.

And Kōya fully intended to experience every second of it.
