Demon Lord reborn as The Hero's Child

The first thing Kōya noticed was the screaming.

It wasn’t the heavy, rhythmic toll of the Academy alarm bells. It wasn’t the distant, concussive roar of ancient stone buildings collapsing under demonic bombardment.

It was screaming. Human screaming.

It came from every direction simultaneously, an overlapping chorus of absolute terror rising from the manicured courtyards as students fled in blind panic between burning dormitories, and instructors desperately attempted to establish bleeding defensive lines.

Kōya ran.

His sword was already naked in his hand. He had vaulted out of bed before his conscious mind had fully registered the alarm, throwing on a loose tunic and boots before racing out into the eastern courtyard. The Academy he had known for three quiet, sheltered years was completely unrecognizable.

Thick, oily black smoke rolled between the towering stone buildings, choking the morning air. Massive, luminescent magical barriers flared and shattered overhead as heavy artillery spells rained down from beyond the walls.

Initiates and scholars were being frantically herded toward the heavily reinforced inner gates, while the combat professors held the breach, buying time with their lives.

Kōya’s dark eyes moved with mechanical, predatory precision.

North. A shattered wall. Clear of hostiles.

East. Three armored demons butchering the groundskeepers.

South. A group of younger students trapped near the burning alchemy wing, cornered by a four-armed brute.

He changed direction instantly.

The demon lunged toward a fleeing boy, its massive claws extended.

Kōya reached the creature first. He didn’t break his stride. He simply swept his blade in a flawless, horizontal arc. The steel passed effortlessly through the demon’s thick throat. The creature collapsed in a fountain of black blood before its claws could find their target.

”Keep moving!” Kōya shouted, his voice a commanding crack of thunder.

The terrified student stared at the headless corpse for half a second before scrambling away toward the inner keep.

Kōya didn’t watch him go. His eyes were already scanning the chaos.

Haru. Aoi. Yuna.

Where were they?

A deafening crash erupted from the western courtyard, followed by the sound of splintering wood.

Kōya spun around. A localized breach. A group of heavily armed demons had smashed through the western evacuation line. But moving among the monsters were human figures. Men wearing leather armor, carrying iron manacles and heavy nets.

Slave traders. Scavengers picking through the ruins of a broken fortress.

Kōya’s expression hardened into a mask of pure malice. He sprinted toward the breach.

Then, cutting through the roar of the fire, he heard Haru’s voice.

”Get away from her!”

Kōya rounded the corner of the library wing, his boots skidding on the blood-slicked cobblestones.

Haru was standing dead center in the ruined street, a practice sword gripped tightly in both hands. Aoi was cowering behind him, her face pale with terror.

A heavy-set human mercenary had one massive, calloused hand locked around Aoi’s slender arm, trying to drag her violently toward a waiting iron-barred wagon.

The man was not a demon. That was the singular fact that made Kōya pause for half a heartbeat.

The man’s eyes were human. His face was human. His rusted iron blade was human. And he was actively attempting to drag another human being into hell for a handful of gold.

Haru swung his sword, aiming for the man’s wrist.

The mercenary blocked lazily, laughing as the cheap steel struck his heavy iron guard. Haru staggered backward from the kinetic shock.

”Let her go!” Haru screamed, his voice cracking.

The mercenary spat on the stones. ”You Academy brats are worth ten times more alive than dead. Especially the pretty ones.”

He yanked Aoi harder. She cried out, stumbling to her knees.

Haru’s expression changed. The fear vanished, replaced by something Kōya had never seen in the boy’s eyes. Something inside the cheerful, awkward student violently fractured.

Haru charged, abandoning all defensive posture.

The mercenary sneered and raised his blade for a lethal downward cleave. Haru caught the first strike on a desperate angle, deflecting the killing blow. The mercenary cursed and snapped a fast counter slash across Haru’s shoulder, slicing deeply through his uniform and into the muscle.

Haru gritted his teeth, refusing to step back.

The man stepped forward, raising his blade for the finishing blow.

Haru moved first.

He drove his sword straight forward, throwing his entire body weight behind the hilt. The blade punched directly through the mercenary’s leather cuirass, burying itself deep into his chest.

The trader froze, his weapon halting in mid-air.

Haru stared at him, his hands slick with blood.

For a terrifying moment, neither man moved. The flames roared around them.

Then, the mercenary’s weapon slipped from his numb fingers, clattering against the cobblestones. His eyes rolled back, and he collapsed heavily, sliding off Haru’s blade.

Haru remained standing over the corpse. His sword trembled uncontrollably in his hands. He was hyperventilating, staring at the dead man’s face.

Aoi scrambled backward, staring at him in shock. ”Haru...”

He looked down at the dark, wet blood coating his hands. His breathing became erratic, bordering on panic. ”I...” He swallowed hard, his eyes wide. ”I killed him.”

Kōya stepped out of the smoke, his own blade resting easily at his side. ”Yes.”

Haru looked up, his face ashen. ”He was human, Kōya.”

”I am aware.”

”He was trying to take her.”

”I know.”

Haru’s fingers tightened so hard around the hilt that his knuckles turned white. His entire body was shaking with the adrenaline and the trauma of taking a life.

Kōya stepped closer, his voice low, steady, and anchoring. ”Then do not let his death become another thing they steal from you today.”

Haru stared at him, desperately trying to anchor himself to Kōya’s absolute calm.

Kōya reached out, his hand gripping Haru’s uninjured shoulder tightly. ”Get Aoi somewhere safe. The inner keep is holding. Go.”

Haru looked past Kōya, looking at Aoi. She nodded, tears cutting clean lines through the soot on her face.

Haru lowered his trembling sword. He reached out with his free hand and grabbed Aoi’s.

They ran, disappearing into the chaotic tide of the evacuation crowd.

Kōya watched them go. Only when they were safely out of sight did he turn his gaze back down to the dead mercenary bleeding out on the stones.

For the first time in three years, the Academy’s pristine lessons about combat theory, honorable duels, and elemental resonance felt profoundly, aggressively meaningless. There were no blunted practice swords here. There were no strict instructors grading forms. There was no arena. There were no rules.

There were only monsters, and the people trying to survive them.

Kōya turned away from the corpse. He needed to find the others.

He moved systematically through the burning Academy grounds, acting as a lethal shepherd, executing any demon that slipped past the perimeter and funneling the terrified students toward the protected interior keep.

By the time the sun finally began to breach the eastern horizon, casting a sickly, gray light through the smoke, the defensive wards over the inner keep had partially recovered, sealing the survivors inside.

The courtyard was a nightmare.

Students were huddled in large groups. Some were weeping uncontrollably over the bodies of their friends. Some were clutching brutal injuries.

Many simply stood in absolute silence, staring blankly at the flames, completely incapable of processing how their safe, ordinary lives had violently transformed into a slaughterhouse in the span of a single hour.

Then, the first captured caravans rolled past the shattered western gates on their way out of the valley.

Heavy, iron-reinforced wooden wagons. Cages built for beasts, now holding humans. Surrounded by armed mercenary guards and massive Slane soldiers.

Kōya stopped dead.

Students were packed inside the cages like cattle. People he had sat beside in history lectures. People who had complained about failing alchemy examinations. People who had argued passionately over training scores. People who had laughed in the dining hall just yesterday.

Now, they were chained cargo.

Kōya’s dark eyes moved with terrifying speed, scanning every single face pressed against the iron bars. One wagon after another.

Not her.

Another caravan rolled past.

Not her.

A third wagon.

Still nothing.

Haru pushed his way back through the crowd from the keep, his shoulder hastily bandaged. His face was pale and drawn.

”Kōya,” he gasped.

Kōya didn’t answer. His eyes were locked on the departing wagons.

Haru followed his gaze, realizing immediately who Kōya was searching for. ”Who... who are you looking for?”

”Yuna.”

Haru’s expression dropped. ”She isn’t here in the keep? I thought she was with you.”

”No.”

Kōya slowly turned his head, looking toward the smoldering western horizon. A cold, heavy dread settled deep inside his gut. The tactical puzzle pieces snapped together with horrifying clarity.

Then, he remembered.

The orphanage.

Yuna had told him about the orphanage, the place where she had lived before earning her place at the Academy.

She had been staying with them for a few days. That’s what he recalled from their lakeside conversation.

It was located in the lower settlement beneath the western ridge. The exact same settlement from which she walked the dirt road toward the Academy gates every single morning.

Yesterday evening, by the edge of the lake, she had told him she would wait for him. She was supposed to meet him when the sun rose. She was supposed to give him the time and space to finally answer her confession.

He was supposed to tell her that he loved her.

Kōya turned sharply toward the broken western gate.

”I am going down there.”

Haru reached out, grabbing Kōya’s arm. ”Kōya, wait! The vanguard is still down there. The perimeter is lost. It’s suicide!”

Kōya violently ripped his arm free, his eyes completely empty of warmth. ”If she is down there, I am bringing her back.”

”Kōya!”

They called him multiple times but he was already running towards his most important person right now.
