Demon Lord reborn as The Hero's Child

The Demon Lord had slaughtered kings for less than this.

He had drowned entire cities in ash over veiled insults, erased ancient bloodlines over whispered betrayals, and once annihilated a burgeoning rebellion simply because its leader had the sheer audacity to interrupt his dinner.

Yet this morning, Raizen Kurogane had been standing completely motionless before a full-length obsidian mirror for nearly five minutes. He was paralyzed by a singular, infuriating dilemma: he could not decide if the high-collared, black ceremonial coat made him look terrifyingly regal, or utterly ridiculous.

He hated the uncertainty.

He hated the suffocating pageantry.

He hated the sickeningly sweet scent of the flowers.

But most of all, he hated how much he actually cared.

Behind his reflection, the cavernous windows of the Demon Lord’s inner sanctum looked out over the jagged black towers of his capital. Obsidian spires pierced a bruised, crimson sky like the ribs of a rotting leviathan. Rivers of molten stone bled through deep trenches beneath the fortress, casting a permanent, hellish glow across the stone.

It was the black heart of his empire.

His throne.

His dominion.

And today, for the first time in a thousand years, none of it mattered.

Raizen scowled, violently adjusting the silver clasp at his throat.

”You’re going to break it.”

The voice drifted from the shadows behind him. Soft. Melodic. Lethal.

He froze.

Mirei stood in the arched doorway.

For a long moment, the Demon Lord simply stared, the air abandoning his lungs. She was a devastating contradiction to every demon he had ever known. Her beauty was not the manufactured, vulgar allure common to their kind; it wasn’t a weapon forged for deliberate provocation. It was effortless. Sovereign. Unnervingly calm.

Her dark hair cascaded loosely over her shoulders, catching the faint, bloody reflections of the magma below. Her eyes held a suffocating depth, swirling with the unmistakable, hypnotic trace of her rare succubus bloodline.

An ancient bloodline.

An uncommon mutation.

A terrifying existence.

Her aura was completely invisible. Almost.

Any lesser demon foolish enough to attempt to touch her without explicit permission would discover, usually a fraction of a second before their mind fractured, that the very fabric of her soul aggressively rejected them. An unseen, violent boundary was woven into her flesh.

Raizen could touch her.

Because she allowed him to.

Because she desired it.

Mirei crossed the cold stone floor, the sound of her footsteps swallowed by the heavy silence of the chamber, and stopped squarely in front of him. She reached up, her cool fingers brushing his jaw, and expertly fixed the silver clasp he had been trying to strangle himself with.

”You’ve been staring at yourself for five minutes.”

”I was conducting a tactical evaluation.”

”Of your own face?”

”Of my ceremonial appearance.”

”Naturally.”

Raizen narrowed his crimson eyes.

She smiled.

It was a small, knowing thing. And it was one of the few weapons in existence capable of making the absolute ruler of the demonic realm completely forget his own vocabulary.

”You look fine,” she murmured.

”Fine?”

”Would you prefer handsome?”

”I would prefer accurate.”

”Then you’re doomed.”

Raizen glared at her. Mirei only laughed, a sound like silver bells in a graveyard. He looked away, his jaw tightening.

That was precisely the problem.

He could face down legions of holy knights without a twitch of hesitation. He could stand before the gaping maws of primordial leviathans without blinking. But one woman looking at him with genuine amusement could effortlessly dismantle centuries of carefully calcified composure.

”You could still cancel it,” Mirei noted, her tone light but probing.

Raizen’s gaze snapped back to her. ”The wedding?”

”Yes.”

”Why would I?”

”Because you look utterly terrified.”

”I am the Demon Lord. I am not terrified.”

”You’ve threatened to skin three servants this morning.”

”They were dangerously incompetent.”

”You threatened to impale the florist.”

”He brought white flowers. White is the color of surrender.”

”They were the exact flowers you ordered last month.”

Raizen paused. The silence stretched.

Mirei’s smile widened, sharp and brilliant.

”...That intelligence was not available to me at the time,” Raizen muttered.

”Of course it wasn’t.”

She stepped closer. The unseen barrier of her aura parted for him flawlessly as her fingers rested lightly against the solid expanse of his chest. Beneath the heavy fabric, the Demon Lord went perfectly still.

”You don’t have to be afraid,” she said, the teasing lilt vanishing from her voice.

”I am not afraid.”

”I know.” Her voice dropped to a whisper. ”That’s why I’m saying it.”

For several seconds, neither moved. The tension between them hummed, thick and electric.

Outside, the heavy, metallic groan of the great citadel bells rolled across the capital. The city was practically vibrating with chaotic celebration. Lesser demons flooded the lower rings. Crimson banners depicting his crest hung from every watchtower. Elite vanguards lined the ceremonial blood-roads, and arrogant nobles had slithered in from the darkest corners of the territories.

The Demon Lord’s wedding.

The sheer absurdity of the concept almost made a hysterical laugh claw its way up his throat.

For centuries, Raizen had operated under a singular truth: peace was merely the brief, boring interval in which you rearmed for the next war. He had never comprehended why mortal creatures desired anything beyond absolute subjugation and power.

Then, like a slow-acting poison, something had fundamentally shifted.

It had started with the Hero.

Raizen had scried on the wretched human more times than his pride would ever let him admit. The Hero didn’t travel with an army. He traveled with a chaotic, fragile group of companions.

They argued over rations.

They laughed at terrible jokes.

They bled for one another.

And there was always a woman standing by his side.

Beautiful. Resilient. Stubbornly alive.

The Hero possessed a holy power that Raizen genuinely respected, but the magic wasn’t what had drawn his eye. It was the way the human looked at the mortals beside him.

Like they were irreplaceable. Like they mattered.

Raizen had legions of nightmares at his beck and call. He had burning kingdoms. He had millions of subjects who would gleefully throw themselves into a meat grinder if he so much as waved a finger.

But none of them had ever looked at him like that.

No one had ever waited for him to return from a slaughter simply because they wanted *him* back. They only waited to see if the crown had fallen.

Then Mirei had materialized in his desolate existence.

And Raizen had discovered the most inconvenient, agonizing truth of his immortal life: he wanted that, too.

Not the Hero’s pathetic mortal life. Not his weak companions. Not his self-righteous fame.

He wanted something brutally simple.

A home.

Someone waiting in the dark.

Perhaps, in a distant future, the sound of small footsteps echoing through halls that had only ever known the heavy boots of soldiers.

The thought felt alien. It felt dangerous.

Mirei squeezed his hand, grounding him. ”You’re overthinking again.”

”I am a tactician. I always think.”

”Yes.” She leaned into his space, the scent of crushed velvet and dark magic washing over him. ”That’s why I agreed to marry you.”

Raizen’s expression flatlined. ”We aren’t married yet.”

Mirei’s lips curled into a knowing smile. ”Then perhaps you should stop stalling.”

Raizen stared at her.

She leaned closer, lowering her voice just enough to make his crimson eyes narrow.

”Besides, we’ve already done most of the things these mortals insist married couples are supposed to do.”

For once, the Demon Lord had absolutely no tactical response. A faint warmth crept across his face. Mirei noticed immediately.

Her smile widened.

”You really are embarrassed.”

”I am not.”

”You are.”

”This conversation is strategically irrelevant.”

”Of course it is.” She laughed again.

Raizen looked away, his expression hardening in a desperate attempt to recover the dignity of the Demon Lord.

It wasn’t working.

Mirei stepped beside him and gently slipped her hand into his.

”Come on, husband-to-be.”

”We are not married yet.”

”You’re still stalling.” Raizen sighed.

The sound seemed to carry the weight of a century.

He stared at her. She laughed out loud.

”You are enjoying my torment.”

”Immensely.”

A heavy, rhythmic knock hammered against the ironwood doors.

In an instant, the atmosphere in the room violently shifted. Raizen’s posture snapped straight. The soft hesitation vanished, swallowed by a suffocating, freezing pressure.

The Demon Lord returned back to his usual stance.

”Enter.”

The heavy doors groaned inward. One of his highest-ranking chamberlains dropped into a terrified, shivering bow.

”My Lord. The tributes are arranged. The guests have arrived.”

Raizen stared down at the trembling demon, his voice like cracking ice. ”Then let them wait.”

Mirei raised a single, perfect eyebrow. ”Raizen.”

He glanced at her. The ice thawed, just a fraction. ”Fine.”

He offered his arm. She took it. Their hands found each other, fingers interlocking with practiced ease. Neither mentioned it. The gesture was louder than any decree he could have shouted from his throne.

The Great Ceremonial Hall had not seen this much concentrated demonic power gathered in one room without a bloodbath ensuing for over four hundred years.

Colossal pillars of polished black bone rose toward a vaulted ceiling choked with ancient, glowing sigils. Banners woven from crimson silk hung between them like sheets of falling blood. Thousands of black candles burned without dripping wax, their unnatural flames sucking the oxygen from the room, leaving the air thick with ozone and anticipation.

At the far end of the dais stood the four Demon Peers.

The apex predators of his empire. They smiled. They bowed deeply.

They presented priceless artifacts. They pledged eternal congratulations to their Sovereign. And they watched him.

Raizen noticed. Of course he noticed. He was a creature born of paranoia.

The first was a towering behemoth encased in pale, jagged armor, a grotesque scar splitting his jawline in two.

The second was a lithe woman whose expression remained frozen in an unnervingly pleasant, doll-like smile throughout the entire procession.

The third stood partially absorbed by the shadows of a pillar, a silent specter with his hands clasped behind his back.

The fourth was loud, obnoxious, and continually raised a golden goblet, roaring with laughter whenever the union was mentioned.

They looked perfectly loyal. They played their parts flawlessly.

Yet Raizen had sat on a throne of corpses for far too long to mistake polite courtesy for actual devotion. Still, he trusted them to hold his borders.

That was his first mistake.

Mirei leaned her weight subtly against him. ”You’re staring.”

”I am observing the perimeter.”

”At your own wedding?”

”Historically, weddings are excellent venues for assassinations.”

She nudged his ribs. ”Try faking enjoyment.”

”I am.”

”You look like you’re calculating the trajectory of an execution.”

”I happen to enjoy executions.”

”I know.” Her thumb stroked the back of his hand. ”But today isn’t one.”

Raizen looked down at her. For once, against every instinct screaming in his black blood, he allowed himself to lower his guard and believe her.

The archaic ceremony began.

Guttural, ancient vows were spoken in the tongue of the abyss. The gathered horde of nobles and warlords fell into a deathly, suffocating silence.

When Raizen turned and took Mirei’s hands, her fingers curled naturally around his. In the center of a room filled with the most ruthless monsters in existence, the moment shrank down to something terrifyingly intimate.

No marching armies.

No screaming dying.

No suffocating weight of the crown.

Just the heat of her skin against his.

The High Priest choked out the final, binding incantation.

Raizen looked only at Mirei, his voice carrying clearly through the silent hall.

”I choose you.”

Her eyes, deep and bottomless, softened with an emotion that made his chest ache.

”I choose you, too.”

The enchanted rings touched.

For one impossible, fleeting second, the Demon Lord felt something he had not felt since the day he clawed his way out of the abyssal pits.

Peace.

Then, the Great Hall erupted.

Guttural cheers shook the dust from the rafters. Heavy goblets smashed together. Dark, frantic music flared to life.

Even Raizen’s rigid jawline relaxed. The hard, murderous edge in his eyes dissolved.

Mirei caught it instantly. ”You’re smiling.”

”I am not.”

”You absolutely are.”

”Your vision is failing. It was a tactical expression of benevolence.”

”Of course it was, my terrifying lord.”

She leaned fully against his side. Raizen, to the absolute shock of the watching nobility, wrapped an arm around her waist and held her there.

Across the cavernous hall, through the sea of celebrating monsters, the four Demon Peers watched.

The boisterous one slowly lowered his goblet, his laughter dying in his throat. The scarred giant glanced at the smiling woman. Their eyes met in the flickering candlelight. Not a single word was exchanged. None was necessary.

The Demon Lord had finally acquired someone to live for. He had found something he loved more than his own life. And that made him vulnerable.

The chaotic celebration bled deep into the red afternoon.

Raizen endured the endless parade of sycophants and congratulations with rapidly deteriorating patience. Mirei, however, seemed to thrive in it, savoring every second of his barely-contained irritation.

At one point, a particularly arrogant territorial lord slithered forward, dropping into a shallow bow.

”My Lord, may I offer my most profound congratulations?”

”You may.”

The noble smiled, a greasy, nervous twitch. ”And perhaps, in light of this union, we might briefly discuss the future redistribution of the eastern soul-harvests?”

The temperature in a ten-foot radius plummeted to absolute zero.

Raizen’s crimson eyes locked onto the noble, the demonic pressure radiating off his body threatening to crush the man’s lungs. ”Today?”

”I—of course not, my Lord. Merely planting a seed for—”

”Then bury it,” Raizen whispered, his voice slicing through the music, ”before I bury you with it.”

The noble practically scrambled backward into the crowd.

Mirei hid her mouth behind a fan of black feathers, her shoulders shaking. ”You are phenomenally terrible at weddings.”

”I am flawless at weddings. He threatened my patience.”

She laughed out loud, a rich, uninhibited sound.

Raizen watched her. The irritation bled out of him just as quickly as it had come. He realized, with a heavy, settling certainty, that he wanted this. All of it.

Not the suffocating ceremony. Not the fake smiles.

Just her laughter.

He wanted to hear it tomorrow. And a decade from now. And a thousand years from now, when the rest of the world had crumbled to dust. For the very first time, he looked at the future and didn’t see a battlefield waiting for him.

He saw something almost peaceful.

Almost.

Hours later, the suffocating noise of the Great Hall became too much. Raizen needed the quiet of the inner sanctum.

He slipped away from the dais, intending to quickly finalize several arcane defense wards that could not be neglected, even today. Mirei remained behind, currently holding court with a group of terrified lesser lords.

”Don’t take too long,” she called over her shoulder, sensing his departure.

Raizen paused in the shadow of the arched doorway and looked back at his wife.

”I will return shortly.”

She smiled, a radiant, grounding anchor in his dark world. ”I know.”

He turned and walked into the quiet, torch-lit corridors.

Neither of them knew that those were the last ordinary words they would ever speak to each other.

The throne room was swallowed in shadows when Raizen entered.

He ascended the dais and sank into the massive throne forged of blackened steel and dragon bone. It swallowed his silhouette entirely.

For three minutes, the silence was absolute. Then, the heavy iron doors burst open, slamming against the stone walls with a violent crack. A blood-soaked messenger threw himself onto the floor, his armor shattered, gasping for air.

”My Lord!”

Raizen’s eyes snapped open, blazing in the dark. ”Report.”

The messenger didn’t bother to rise from his knees. ”Urgent transmission from the Eastern Border, my Lord. The magical wards are collapsing.”

Raizen leaned forward, the air around him growing heavy. ”Who?”

”The Hero has breached the gate.”

Silence fell over the throne room.

Raizen slowly stood up, the shadows clinging to his coat. ”The human? Here?”

Before the messenger could answer, a second scout practically fell through the doors, missing an arm, dark blood pooling on the pristine stone.

”My Lord! The Western Vanguard forces have mobilized! They are attacking our garrisons!”

A third staggered in behind him, weeping. ”Southern armies are marching on the inner ring! They are slaughtering the loyalists!”

A fourth demon, pale and trembling, dragged himself into the hall.

”My Lord... the subterranean magma channels. Someone has blown the retaining walls. There is hostile activity beneath the capital itself.”

Raizen stood perfectly still at the top of the dais.

Four directions.

East.

West.

South.

Below.

His brilliant, tactical mind assembled the puzzle in a fraction of a millisecond.

Four distinct vectors of attack.

Four immense surges of demonic mana overriding his defensive grid.

Four Demon Peers.

He looked down at his gloved hand. The phantom warmth of Mirei’s fingers still lingered there.

The timing. His wedding day. The one day in a thousand years he had ordered his personal guard to stand down. The one day he had allowed himself to put away his sword and focus on something other than survival.

His fist slowly clenched. The armrest of the ancient throne shattered into dust beneath his grip.

The Hero wasn’t the masterstroke. The Hero was just the distraction. The battering ram to keep Raizen busy while the real traitors gutted his empire from the inside out.

Raizen looked toward the distant doors leading back to the banquet hall.

For the first time that day, the strange, comforting warmth that had blossomed in his chest was violently extinguished.

”They waited,” Raizen whispered. His voice was deathly quiet.

The silence terrified the bleeding messengers more than any scream could have.

”They waited until today. Until the exact moment I laid down my armor.”

The first messenger swallowed hard. ”My Lord?”

When Raizen looked down at him, his crimson eyes were hollow. Empty. Endless voids of freezing apathy.

”Find the four Demon Peers.”

The scout trembled. ”We... we already tried, my Lord. As soon as the first ward fell.”

A sickening pause.

”They’re gone.”

Raizen didn’t blink. The temperature in the massive room plummeted so fast that frost crawled up the iron pillars.

Gone.

No declaration of war.

No ideological monologues.

Just a cowardly, calculated dagger to the back.

His oldest, most powerful tools. The monsters he had trusted to hold the pillars of his kingdom.

Raizen slowly closed his eyes.

Behind the darkness of his eyelids, he saw the four smiling faces raising their goblets in the Great Hall just hours ago. He saw their deep bows. He heard their honeyed congratulations.

And then, he felt Mirei’s hand sliding into his.

Deep within the abyss of Raizen Kurogane’s soul, something snapped.

It wasn’t a loud, dramatic explosion. It was the quiet, catastrophic rupture of a fault line. A fundamental breaking of his reality.

When he opened his eyes, the man who had smiled at the altar was dead.

The Demon Lord had reclaimed his throne.

”They have broken my trust,” Raizen stated flatly.

There was absolutely no anger in his voice. Just a horrifying, clinical certainty.

He stepped down from the dais. ”I will unmake them. I will tear their souls from their flesh and burn their lineages from the annals of time.”

The messenger stared, paralyzed. ”But... what about the Hero, my Lord?”

Raizen’s gaze pierced through the walls of the citadel, looking eastward. ”The human is merely a pest. I will rip his head from his shoulders on my way out. The traitors can wait their turn.”

*BOOM.*

A catastrophic explosion violently rocked the fortress. The black stone beneath Raizen’s boots heaved. Dust rained from the vaulted ceiling.

Then another shockwave hit. And another.

Raizen strode to the towering window. Beyond the glass, the obsidian spires of his indestructible capital were crumbling. The crimson sky was choking on black smoke. Plumes of hellfire erupted from the streets as four separate armies tore his kingdom apart.

And somewhere, carving a bloody path through the outer walls, the Hero of humanity was coming to claim his head.

Raizen stared into the burning apocalypse of his empire.

He had spent countless centuries believing that absolutely nothing in existence possessed the leverage to make him feel fear. He had been untouchable because he had been empty.

He had been wrong. Because now, he had something to lose. And the enemy knew exactly where she was.

Behind him, separated by a labyrinth of corridors, Mirei was trapped in a room full of potential traitors.

Raizen turned away from the burning city and faced the iron doors. He would return to her. Whatever the cost.

Whatever continent he had to sink into the ocean. Whatever oceans of blood he had to spill to pave the road.

He would return to his wife.

Outside, with a deafening roar, the first great watchtower of the Demon capital collapsed into a sea of fire.

And through the screaming and the ash, the wedding bells continued to ring.
