Demon Lord reborn as The Hero's Child

Kōya slowly lowered his eyes to the mud.

He didn’t know what to say. His brilliant, tactical mind was completely paralyzed.

A total stranger had just willingly sacrificed his arm, his livelihood, and nearly his life for him.

Not because they shared blood. Not because they were sworn allies. Not because Kōya was a prince or a lord, or because he owed Kōya a debt.

He did it simply because he believed that someone had to hold the line to protect the next generation. It was a staggering, irrational act of pure humanity that Kōya, born as a Demon Lord, could barely comprehend.

Kōya looked across the clearing at the severed arm lying forgotten several meters away.

His chest tightened painfully.

”I...” Kōya clenched his fist, pressing it against his thigh. ”I will remember this debt.”

The adventurer smiled, closing his eye as the healing magic did its work. ”Good. See that you do.”

Kōya stood up, his posture straightening. ”I need to go.”

The adventurer’s eye snapped open, his smile vanishing instantly. ”Go where? Are you insane? You need to head back to the bridge. The vanguard is holding the line.”

”I am heading toward my village.”

”That is entirely hostile territory now, kid. It’s not safe.”

”My father is there. I must extract him.”

The adventurer shook his head weakly. ”Then your father must fight his own way here. You can’t survive out there alone.”

Kōya hesitated, looking out into the dark woods. ”My father is Seiya.”

The adventurer completely froze. The other men working on his bandages stopped moving, looking up in shock.

”Seiya?” the wounded man asked, his voice suddenly sharp.

”Yes.”

The adventurer stared at the young boy in absolute disbelief. ”You mean... the legendary...”

Kōya nodded solemnly. ”The Hero.”

The adventurer looked frantically at the other men. Several exchanged wide-eyed, desperate glances. In a world rapidly falling to darkness, that name was a beacon of impossible hope.

Kōya continued, his voice steady. ”He is far stronger than any of us. He can turn the tide of this invasion.”

The adventurer thought for a long moment, the tactical reality settling in. ”If the great Seiya is really out there...”

”He is.”

”Then reaching him might actually be humanity’s best chance of surviving this week.”

Kōya looked toward the deep forest. ”I need to find him.”

The wounded adventurer reached weakly toward his leather belt. His hand shook violently from exhaustion and blood loss. One of the other adventurers quickly leaned in, helping him unfasten the clasp.

The wounded man pulled a short, finely crafted one-handed blade from its leather sheath. He held it out, hilt first, toward Kōya.

”Take this.”

Kōya looked down at the offered weapon, his eyes widening. ”I cannot take your blade.”

”You absolutely can.” The adventurer weakly pushed it toward him.

”You lost your sword in the mud fighting that monstrosity. A swordsman doesn’t walk into hell unarmed.”

Kōya slowly reached out and accepted the blade. It was significantly lighter than his previous weapon. The crossguard was simple, devoid of ornamentation. The grip was worn smooth from years of constant use.

But the steel was flawless. It was a reliable veteran’s weapon.

”Thank you,” Kōya said softly, feeling the weight of the gift.

The adventurer nodded, resting his head back in the mud. ”Don’t make me regret giving it to you, kid.”

Kōya almost smiled. The ghost of an expression touched his lips. ”I won’t.”

He turned back toward the dense forest, preparing to run. Then, he stopped. He looked back over his shoulder at the bleeding man who had saved his life.

”Stay alive.”

The adventurer chuckled, a wet, rattling sound. ”That’s the current plan.”

Kōya nodded once. Then he turned toward the forest. He took several steps before the woman’s voice reached him from behind.

”Thank you!”

Kōya stopped.

For a moment, he simply stood there with his back to them. He looked down at the short blade in his hand.

The weapon had belonged to the man who had just sacrificed his arm for him. A stranger who had decided that Kōya’s life was worth protecting.

And now there was a family behind him who would have lost a husband and father if that man had not stood his ground.

Kōya tightened his grip around the worn leather hilt. He remembered the woman’s trembling voice.

”Our whole family is indebted to you.”

He lowered his eyes.

No.

They weren’t indebted to him.

If anything...

He was indebted to them. To the adventurer. To the family waiting for him to come home. To everyone who had chosen to protect someone they barely knew.

Kōya had been born carrying the soul and power of a demon lord. For most of his life, he had understood strength as something simple.

Power meant survival. Power meant dominance. Power meant being strong enough that nobody could ever take anything from you again. But today, a man had willingly sacrificed part of himself for a stranger.

And somehow, Kōya felt that was a greater display of strength than anything he had ever witnessed.

Kōya looked toward the dark forest ahead.

”I won’t forget.” Then he vanished into the trees.

Back at the edge of the clearing, the remaining demonic horde was still skirmishing heavily with the vanguard of adventurers. But the tactical reality had drastically changed.

The demons had seen everything.

They had witnessed their towering General fall in combat. They had seen the human boy unleash pure, terrifying demonic flames. They had witnessed his impossible strength.

And now, they knew exactly which direction he was heading.

One of the scarred tracker demons sniffed the air aggressively, catching the scent of Kōya’s fading aura. ”The General is dead.”

Another brute looked deep into the silverwood forest, its eyes glowing with malice. ”The half-breed boy killed him.”

”He is having a strange energy. Follow the boy; we shall take him to our liege.”

Several dozen demons immediately broke off from the skirmish, turning their backs on the adventurers. They began moving aggressively into the dense forest, tracking Kōya’s path.

The defending adventurers noticed the sudden shift in the horde’s behavior.

”They’re breaking the line! They’re leaving!” a shield-bearer shouted in confusion.

”Don’t let them slip through the net!” the captain roared.

The remaining adventurers surged forward to intercept the retreating demons. Steel collided violently with bone and claw. Destructive magic exploded in bright flashes between the ancient trees, setting the underbrush on fire.

Some of the demons were successfully stopped, dragged down into the mud, and slaughtered. But many others slipped seamlessly through the porous defensive line, vanishing into the shadows of the woods.

Running silently through the canopy, Kōya glanced backward over his shoulder.

He saw them. A massive hunting pack of demons was tearing through the undergrowth, rapidly following his exact trajectory.

He tightened his grip on the borrowed short blade, feeling the worn leather of the hilt.

”So that’s the tactical reality,” he murmured to himself.

They weren’t interested in chasing the vulnerable adventurers or the caravans anymore.

They were exclusively hunting him.

Kōya turned his eyes forward. He didn’t attempt to hide his trail. He simply accelerated, pouring aura into his legs, blurring deeper into the wilderness.

The forest became increasingly quiet as he moved deeper into the territory. The chaotic, deafening sounds of the bridge battle slowly faded into a distant, muffled echo behind him until there was nothing left but the sound of his own breathing and the snapping of twigs under his boots.

Kōya continued moving relentlessly forward. His erratic breathing slowly stabilized into a measured, combative rhythm. The short blade rested comfortably against his side, a silent promise of violence.

He still didn’t know exactly what he was going to find at the end of this road. He only knew one absolute truth.

His father was somewhere ahead in the dark.

Seiya. The legendary Hero. The man who had raised him.

Kōya had spent three long years at the Academy casually thinking about the day he would finally return home. Now, amidst the ashes of an invasion, he finally had the chance.

He pushed his way through a thick line of thorny silverwood trees, expecting to find the familiar dirt road leading to his village.

Instead, he stopped dead in his tracks. There was a military outpost directly ahead.

A small, heavily fortified stone and timber structure stood stubbornly beside the overgrown forest road. It was designed as a checkpoint. Its heavy, iron-reinforced wooden gates were thrown wide open.

Kōya stared at the architecture, his analytical mind immediately searching for anomalies.

There was absolutely nobody there.

No armored guards manning the watchtowers. No weary travelers resting in the courtyard. No loud merchants arguing over tariffs. No ambient voices carrying on the wind.

Nothing but absolute, deafening silence.

He slowly, cautiously stepped out of the tree line and onto the dirt road. The silence felt profoundly wrong. It was heavy, unnatural, and suffocating.

Kōya’s dark eyes swept the perimeter, cataloging every detail.

There were no bodies lying in the mud. There were no obvious signs of a frantic battle—no scorch marks on the stone, no shattered weapons, no pools of dried blood. The outpost hadn’t been besieged or overrun.

But something catastrophic had undeniably occurred here. The absolute absence of life was a haunting testament to it. He could feel the residual echo of terror in the air itself.

His hand tightened reflexively around the grip of the weapon the adventurer had given him.

Suddenly, a heavy branch snapped loudly in the dark woods behind him.

The hunting pack was getting closer.

Kōya didn’t immediately turn around. His dark eyes remained fixed intensely on the empty, gaping gates of the abandoned outpost.

Then, he felt something else.

A presence. Not located far away in the woods, but somewhere deep inside the silent structure itself. It wasn’t the chaotic, bloodthirsty signature of an ordinary demon. It was something deeply buried, calculating, and patient. Waiting beneath the silence.

Kōya’s expression hardened into an emotionless mask. ”What exactly happened here...?”

Another branch snapped, much closer this time, accompanied by a low, guttural growl.

He finally looked slowly over his shoulder.

Several massive demons emerged smoothly from between the trees, stepping onto the dirt road. Their glowing red eyes locked instantly onto his solitary figure. They bared their fangs, spreading out to flank him.

Kōya turned his attention back toward the abandoned outpost.

The heavy wooden entrance stood wide open. Like a dark, waiting maw, daring him to step inside.

He took one deliberate step forward. Then another.

Whatever horrific reality had befallen this place... Whatever tragic fate had met the people who had lived securely beyond its walls...

Kōya was going to find out.

He crossed the threshold of the empty gate, stepping into the shadows of the courtyard.

And the dark forest behind him immediately filled with the howling of demons, rushing in to close the trap.
