Demon Lord reborn as The Hero's Child

Yuna landed on the roof beside him, her sword sparking. ”What?”

”That isn’t a combat variant.” Kōya tightened his grip on his hilt. ”That’s not its primary body.”

Sensing it had been understood, the demon shrieked and threw itself at them to buy time for the upload.

Kōya met it head-on. The clash was brutal. The demon swung wildly, trying to crush him with sheer mass. Kōya parried, forcing the creature’s arm wide, but the beast immediately retaliated with a sweeping kick that forced Kōya to backflip to avoid being gutted.

Yuna stepped into the gap, weaving through the creature’s guard. Her blade flashed in a complex sequence—a thrust, a feint, a low lateral slash. Lightning arced from her steel, chaining through the demon’s black membrane and forcing it to spasm.

”If it’s not a fighter, what is it doing?” she yelled over the hiss of ozone.

”Surveillance!” Kōya shouted, parrying a desperate downward strike and grinding his blade against the creature’s talons. ”It isn’t here to kill us. It’s a watcher.”

Yuna’s expression hardened into something lethal. ”Then let’s give it an execution worth recording.”

She unleashed a massive surge of elemental energy, the air turning thick and metallic.

Kōya felt the ancient, buried power inside him respond. The darkness demanded to be let out. He allowed a fraction of it to rise—just enough. A pitch-black, suffocating aura bled from his hands, wrapping around his steel like liquid smoke.

The demon froze. For the first time, its massive eye conveyed absolute terror. It recognized the signature of a predator that predated human history.

Kōya offered a grim, humorless smile. ”So, you understand what you are looking at.”

He lunged. The demon tried to dodge, but Yuna was already there, driving a lightning-charged thrust directly into its flank. The creature screamed, stumbling directly into Kōya’s path.

Their assault became a flawless, kinetic synchronization. Yuna drove it left; Kōya pressured it right. They trapped it in a crossfire of steel and magic, refusing to give it the space it needed to finish its transmission.

Desperate, the demon turned its enormous eye directly onto Kōya and fired a concentrated pulse of raw neural energy.

Kōya staggered. The world inverted. For a fraction of a second, his physical surroundings dissolved, replaced by a dark, stone-walled chamber. He saw a massive, circular viewing mirror floating in the dark. And standing behind the glass, cloaked in shadow, a solitary figure was watching him.

The vision snapped, returning Kōya to the cold reality of the roof.

The demon turned to hurl itself off the edge.

It wants us to cut down the body, Kōya realized instantly. If the body dies naturally, the transmission completes.

”Yuna! Stand down!”

She aborted her swing midway, staring at him in shock. ”Why?!”

Kōya didn’t answer. He watched the projection flickering above them, the final sequence of data preparing to vanish into the ether. He didn’t need to kill the beast. He needed to sever the link.

He drew his arm back, his dark aura pooling entirely into the tip of his blade. He stepped into a heavy, perfect throw, turning his entire body into a siege engine.

The sword tore through the air, a streak of black malice.

It struck the demon square in the center of its massive, unblinking eye, pinning the creature to the slate roof.

For a single heartbeat, the world stopped. The projection above them stuttered, fracturing into static, before shattering entirely.

The demon’s body violently convulsed. The black membrane collapsed inward, rapidly dissolving into ash and foul-smelling smoke. It released one final, pathetic hiss before fading into nothing.

Silence rushed back onto the roof, broken only by the distant shouting of the guards in the courtyard below.

Kōya walked forward, pulling his sword free from the scorched slate. The steel was coated in a thick, black residue.

Yuna approached slowly, her lightning aura fading into the night air. She looked at the ash, then up at Kōya. ”You knew what it was doing.”

”I deduced it.”

”That wasn’t just a wild monster that wandered past the wards.”

”No.”

She looked up at the empty sky, the stars cold and indifferent. ”Then where was it sending that information?”

Kōya wiped his blade clean with a cloth from his pocket, his eyes focused on the distant, eastern horizon. ”Somewhere far away. But not far enough.”

The Academy spent the remaining hours of the night in a state of controlled panic.

Senior instructors swept the perimeter with high-tier detection magic. Students were corralled into the dining halls for questioning. The boy who had been possessed was found alive in the corridor, deeply traumatized and remembering absolutely nothing of his time as a vessel.

Because Kōya’s strike had annihilated the creature’s core, almost no physical evidence remained. The headmaster eventually reached the only logical conclusion: a demonic surveillance entity had breached the grounds.

By sunrise, the protective barriers had been heavily reinforced. Armed guards were stationed at the entrances to the dormitories, and a strict curfew was enacted. The official decree read out at breakfast was meant to soothe: The threat was isolated. The entity has been eliminated. The Academy is secure.

Sitting on the edge of his bed later that evening, Haru stared at Kōya as if looking at a stranger.

”So...” Haru began, his voice tight.

Kōya looked up from the leather-bound history text he was studying. ”Yes?”

”You fought a demon.”

”I did.”

”In our dormitory hallway. In your pajamas.”

”I was wearing adequate clothing, yes.”

”And then you chased it across a roof, alongside Yuna, and threw your sword through its face.”

Kōya turned a page of his book, considering the sequence of events. ”That is an accurate tactical summary.”

Haru buried his face in his hands, letting out a long, hollow laugh. ”You are remarkably, insanely calm about this.”

”I have experienced vastly worse mornings.”

Haru sighed, staring at the ceiling. ”I don’t know if that’s supposed to make me feel better, or if I should just pack my bags and go home.”

Kōya’s eyes returned to the text, but he didn’t read a single word. His mind was locked on the final, fractured image he had seen during the psychic feedback.

A chamber. A viewing glass. A man in the shadows.

The demon had not attacked them out of malice or hunger. It had been systematically mapping their weaknesses. And somewhere beyond the safety of the Academy walls, someone had been cataloging every second of it.

Far to the east, deep within the jagged, obsidian mountains of Slane territory, a man sat rigidly before a massive circular mirror.

The glass had gone pitch black. Seconds before, it had shown Kōya’s face, the blade infused with dark aura flying directly toward the lens.

The man leaned forward, his elbows resting on the carved armrests of his throne. ”Interesting.”

Silence filled the cavernous chamber. The spy was dead. The arcane link was severed.

Slowly, the man leaned back into the shadows. A cold, serpentine smile stretched across his face.

”Someone finally noticed the eyes in the dark,” he murmured.

A servant, standing just outside the ring of lamplight, bowed deeply. ”My Lord. How should we proceed? The connection is lost.”

The man kept his eyes locked on the dead glass. ”We do nothing. Not yet.” He stood, his heavy cloak sweeping across the stone floor. ”They know they were being watched. They have reinforced the walls and locked the gates.”

”Then we are blind?”

”No,” the man chuckled, a dry, rattling sound. ”It simply means we must stop observing them from the outside.” He turned toward the heavy iron doors at the back of the chamber. ”Prepare the others.”

The servant bowed lower. ”It will be done.”

The chamber descended into silence.

Hundreds of miles away, the students of the Royal Academy returned to their beds, believing the danger had passed with the rising sun. They were wrong.

The demon was dead, yes. But the watcher was very much alive. And beneath the stone foundations of the Academy itself, deep in the dark where the wards could not reach, something else began to stir.
