Demon Lord reborn as The Hero's Child

The Bridge of Hope was larger up close.

Kōya had initially analyzed it from the elevated ridge, calculating its sheer mass through the morning mist, but the actual scale of the architecture was difficult to fully comprehend until he was standing in its shadow.

Now, as their caravan merged painfully into the enormous procession funneled toward the crossing, he could see the intricate details. The massive, ancient stone pillars anchored deep into the abyss. The weathered, dormant runes carved deeply into its surface by hands that had turned to dust centuries ago.

And the endless, agonizingly slow line of wagons stretching ahead into infinity.

The bridge itself was incredibly broad, easily capable of accommodating ten heavy caravans riding side by side. But it was nowhere near broad enough for the thousands upon thousands of terrified people gathered before it to cross simultaneously.

The bottleneck was absolute.

One caravan jerked forward. Then another. Then another.

Slowly. Painfully, terrifyingly slowly.

Kōya leaned out toward the rear opening of the canvas wagon, his dark eyes scanning the bottleneck.

”How long will this crossing take?”

The professor stood beside the tailgate, his hands resting on his hips. ”That entirely depends.”

”On what variables?”

”On exactly how quickly the people ahead of us can force their horses to move.”

Kōya looked down the length of the bridge again. That was not a comforting tactical answer.

Beyond the far end of the bridge, looming through the mist, stood something enormous.

A fortress.

Its colossal walls were old, heavily weathered by centuries of biting wind and rain, but they remained impossibly sturdy. Massive, fortified towers rose high above the surrounding cliffs, and the ancient stone structures extended deep into the distant, elevated landscape.

It looked significantly less like a traditional human settlement and far more like something designed explicitly to withstand a cataclysm.

Kōya pointed toward it. ”That is the fortress?”

The professor nodded grimly. ”The old Hero’s Fortress.”

Kōya stared at the monolithic walls. ”The Heroes of the old era actually lived there?”

”Once.” The professor’s voice dropped, carrying the heavy weight of history. ”It was constructed during the height of the previous Demon War. It served as a stronghold. A sanctuary. And, ultimately, humanity’s final line of defense.”

Kōya looked at the impenetrable walls again. ”Then why is nobody living there now?”

The professor didn’t answer immediately. He looked at the bridge. ”Because the war eventually ended.”

Kōya waited for the rest of the explanation.

”And,” the professor added softly, ”because the world eventually, foolishly forgot what that place truly was meant for.”

The answer only spawned a dozen more tactical questions. But before Kōya could voice a single one, a sudden shift in the ambient mana caught his immediate attention.

Light.

Faint, pulsing, golden-white light was beginning to bloom around the distant fortress.

Thin, intricate lines of raw magic crawled aggressively across the ancient stonework.

One massive rune illuminated. Then another. Then another.

The professor’s expression changed from academic curiosity to profound tension.

”The protection has begun.”

Kōya watched the light carefully, analyzing the magical signature. ”What protection?”

”The fortress possesses an ancient, localized defensive system. It has laid completely dormant for generations.” He pointed toward the glowing formations spreading like golden ivy up the towers.

”Someone inside has finally activated it.”

The light spread deliberately. It wasn’t a single, massive barrier snapping into existence all at once. The ancient magic was building itself, piece by piece, weaving a structural matrix.

Pillars. Interlocking runes. Solid arcs of brilliant light crossing the sky. One reinforced section at a time.

Kōya’s eyes narrowed. ”How long until the matrix is complete?”

The professor shook his head. ”We don’t know.”

Kōya looked at the sheer length of the bridge. Then at the glowing fortress. Then down at the massive, paralyzed line of caravans trapped ahead of them.

That was when the horrifying reality of the situation clicked into place. He finally understood why everyone was so completely desperate to cross the chasm.

They weren’t simply trying to reach the other side. They were trying to reach the fortress *before* the gates sealed.

The caravan groaned, moving forward a miserable several meters. Then, it violently stopped again.

Kōya sighed, his breath pluming in the cold air. ”At this speed...”

”We will cross,” the professor stated firmly.

His tone was perfectly calm. But Kōya noticed the subtle tightening around the professor’s eyes. The older mage was watching the glowing magical formations building across the chasm just as carefully as Kōya was.

Neither of them knew exactly how much time remained before the barrier locked them out.

The line lurched again. A few more caravans successfully crossed the threshold into the fortress.

Then, the road completely stopped.

Panic immediately flared in the bottleneck. People began openly complaining.

Exhausted drivers shouted curses at one another. Frightened children cried inside the wagons. Heavily armed adventurers shoved their way through the throng, trying desperately to keep everyone organized and moving forward.

Kōya watched the chaotic crowd. There were simply too many people. Far too many bodies occupying a confined tactical space. And every single person seemed to understand that the glowing fortress represented their absolute only chance of surviving the morning.

Then, a sudden, heavy shadow passed rapidly over the wagon.

Kōya looked up instantly.

At first, through the morning mist, he saw nothing.

Then, another massive shadow moved aggressively across the gray sky, banking sharply above them.

Aoi stood up abruptly inside the wagon. ”What was that?”

The professor spun around. ”Everyone! Stay inside the wagon. Do not move.”

His voice had fundamentally changed. The casual, slightly eccentric teacher from the Academy was entirely gone. The man standing before them now was a hardened, highly experienced combat mage.

”Professor?” Haru asked, his hand going to his sword.

The professor stepped down out of the caravan onto the stone bridge. ”Do not leave this wagon under any circumstances.”

Kōya moved toward the rear opening, resting his hand on the wooden frame. ”Identify the threat. What is happening?”

The professor looked up toward the bruised sky. ”Demons.”

The word had barely left his lips when absolute thunder exploded overhead.

*BOOM!*

A massive bolt of red lightning descended violently from the clouds.

It struck the stone road several dozen meters away, obliterating a merchant cart. The ancient stone shattered. People screamed in terror. Draft horses reared violently, snapping their harnesses.

A second bolt crashed down. Then a third, turning the bridge into a killing field.

Several winged demons broke through the smoke and mist, diving toward the caravans. Their bodies were twisted, grotesque parodies of gargoyles, with enormous, leathery wings spreading from their muscular backs.

One of the beasts hovered directly above their section of the bridge. It raised a massive, clawed hand. A condensed sphere of localized fire formed rapidly above its palm.

The professor’s eyes narrowed. ”Everyone get down!”

The spell descended. A roaring wall of fire erupted across the stone road, rushing directly toward their wagon.

The professor did not flinch. He thrust his right hand forward, his mana flaring brilliantly.

A thick, translucent magical barrier instantly materialized in the air.

The flames slammed brutally against it.

*WHOOOM!*

The entire heavy caravan shook from the kinetic impact. Kōya felt the intense, blistering heat radiating against his face through the magical shield.

The professor gritted his teeth, holding the barrier steady against the inferno. ”Stay inside!”

He glanced sharply toward the vanguard of adventurers frantically defending the surrounding caravans. ”They’re young, but they’re highly talented. Don’t underestimate them,” he muttered, more to himself than anyone else.

Several adventurers, covered in soot and blood, looked toward Kōya and the other students inside the wagon.

The professor continued holding the shield. ”Keep an eye on them.”

Then, he looked back over his shoulder at his terrified students. ”If you encounter absolutely anything you cannot handle...” He pointed a finger directly at his own chest.

”Call me.”

Kōya nodded, his face completely devoid of fear.

The professor’s stern expression softened, but only for a fraction of a second. ”Just shout.”

Then, he dropped the barrier and stepped away from the relative safety of the wagon. ”I will hear you.”

He turned back toward the raging battlefield. And immediately disappeared into the chaos.

The professor moved laterally, sliding smoothly through the terrified crowds rather than pushing directly toward the bridge.

Kōya watched him carefully from the back of the wagon.

A group of three winged demons shrieked, folding their wings to dive toward a vulnerable, exposed caravan carrying families.

The professor raised one hand calmly.

A massive, glowing circle of high-tier magic materialized directly beneath the diving demons. The air pressure violently inverted. The demons were thrown helplessly upward, their flight path shattered.

Before they could even attempt to recover, a second, devastating spell struck them mid-air.

The three demons vanished entirely inside a localized storm of violently compressing magical energy.

The professor didn’t stop to admire his work. He immediately moved again.

Another grounded demon attacked from his left flank, swinging a heavy iron axe. He intercepted it with a localized gravity well. Another spell. Another brutal, calculated explosion.

He wasn’t trying to fight his way to the fortress. He was intentionally remaining in the kill zone, deliberately creating safe pockets of space around the stalled caravans. Protecting the fleeing people. Protecting his students. And doing it while constantly, effortlessly moving between multiple lethal threats.

Kōya watched the man work, his analytical mind processing the battle. He finally understood.

The professor was fully capable of unleashing vastly more powerful, city-leveling magic. But he couldn’t. Not here. Not with hundreds of fragile civilians surrounding him. Not with his students sitting a few yards away.

Every single spell had to be perfectly controlled. Every explosive attack had to be meticulously calculated to minimize collateral damage. It was a terrifying display of absolute restraint.

The armored adventurers fought bravely alongside him. Some formed shield walls, physically blocking demons from reaching the vulnerable wagons.

Others fired arrows and magic into the sky, swatting the winged creatures out of the air.

Several adventurers formed tight, desperate defensive rings around injured civilians bleeding on the stones.

The entire bridge became a chaotic, deafening wall of clashing steel, blinding magic, roaring fire, and screaming horses.
