Demon Lord reborn as The Hero's Child

Kōya did not sleep.

He had returned to his dormitory hours ago, shedding his Academy uniform and extinguishing the small oil lamp beside his bed. It made absolutely no difference. The darkness offered no sanctuary.

He lay flat on his back beneath the thin wool blanket, his hands resting behind his head, staring blankly up at the ceiling.

Every time he closed his eyes, the tactical overlay of the world vanished, replaced entirely by the lake. He saw the final, bruised light of the sunset bleeding into the water. He felt Yuna’s hand in his—the exact pressure of her fingers, the warmth of her palm against his cheek, the terrifying proximity of her breath against his own.

And then, he heard the echo of those three words he had finally managed to say, but only to the empty air after she had already vanished into the trees.

I love you too.

Kōya turned onto his side, his brow furrowing.

Outside the window, the Academy was submerged in absolute silence. The final magical lamps illuminating the eastern courtyard had burned down to embers. The long stone corridors had emptied of footsteps. Even the distant, ambient sounds of the late-night patrols had faded into the quiet hum of the silverwood forest.

Tomorrow morning.

He had made a vow to himself by the water. He would tell her everything. Not strategically. Not carefully hedging his words as he did whenever emotions became impossible to mathematically categorize. He would simply tell her the devastating truth. He wanted her beside him.

The thought made something heavy, ancient, and entirely unfamiliar stir beneath his ribs.

Kōya almost smiled in the dark.

Almost.

Then, he noticed the light.

A faint, unnatural glow had bled through the edges of his drawn curtains.

He sat up instantly. The languid warmth in his chest evaporated, replaced by cold, calculated adrenaline. For several seconds, he remained perfectly still, analyzing the illumination.

It wasn’t sunrise. The eastern horizon was still hours away from breaking.

This light was coming from the west. From somewhere much closer.

Kōya threw the blanket aside, his bare feet making no sound as he crossed the floorboards. He pulled the heavy fabric of the curtain back just a fraction of an inch.

Far beyond the Academy’s outer walls, past the rolling hills that cradled the lower town, several points of jagged orange flickered violently against the black sky.

Then another appeared.

Then another.

Kōya’s expression hardened into a mask of pure stone.

Those weren’t lanterns. They were fires.

His eyes narrowed as his senses stretched outward. The ambient air pressure in the room had subtly changed. At first, it was almost imperceptible—a slight thickening of the atmosphere. Then, he felt it pressing against his skin.

A dense, suffocating, entirely unnatural weight was gathering beyond the Academy perimeter.

It was not a single presence. It was dozens.

Kōya stepped closer to the glass. His ancient instincts, forged in centuries of endless slaughter, had already begun to map the threats before his conscious mind caught up.

A cluster to the north. Another flanking the western ridge. More pouring in from the southern valley.

His hand slowly, reflexively closed around the edge of the wooden window frame. The wood groaned under the sudden, crushing grip.

The sensation wasn’t merely the static presence of demons.

They were moving. They were mobilized.

They were moving toward the town.

A low, subsonic vibration shuddered through the stone floor beneath his feet.

Then, somewhere in the distance, a heavy brass bell rang.

Once.

Twice.

A third time.

The Academy’s primary defensive alarm erupted, a shrieking klaxon of auditory mana that shattered the quiet night.

Kōya’s eyes went completely cold.

”Demons.”

He turned from the window and reached for his sword.

And miles away, beyond the safety of the Academy wards, another young woman was walking beneath the same burning sky.

Yuna had left the orphanage long before dawn.

She had said her goodbyes quietly in the dark. There had been no logical reason to wake the entire house, but the old, frail caretaker had heard her moving and hugged her at the door anyway. One of the youngest children, rubbing sleep from his eyes, had stumbled into the hallway to ask when she was coming back.

Yuna had smiled, brushing his hair affectionately, and promised that she would return soon.

She walked down the dirt road carrying a small bundle of flowers in her left hand. They were nothing expensive. They held no magical properties. They were just wild blooms gathered from the small, overgrown patch behind the orphanage kitchen.

She had chosen them specifically because she knew Kōya would find the gesture profoundly confusing and utterly devoid of tactical merit. That was precisely why she wanted to press them into his hands.

Her right hand rested comfortably against the heavy leather strap of the sword case secured diagonally across her back.

Inside the case lay her family’s heirloom: the Lightning Sword.

She had retrieved it from the orphanage vault before leaving. She had absolutely no intention of carrying it around the Academy every day;

it was too heavy, too dangerous, and carried far too much political weight.

But after the overwhelming emotional clarity she had found by the lake the previous evening, she wanted the weapon somewhere safe. She wanted it secured in her dormitory until she understood what the future demanded of her.

And more than that, she simply wanted to see Kōya.

She had spent half the night staring at the ceiling, wondering exactly how he would answer her confession. She had imagined every possible variation of his face. His serious, analytical frown. His rare, subtle confusion.

That absurdly, infuriatingly calm mask he wore when he was cornered. She had even imagined him delivering some impossibly complicated, heavily worded thesis on their emotional compatibility before finally kissing her again.

The thought made her smile in the dark.

She looked toward the eastern horizon. It was still pitch black.

”I wonder if he’s awake yet,” she whispered to the empty road.

She answered her own question immediately. Of course he was. Kōya was chronically incapable of sleeping past four in the morning.

She adjusted her grip on the flowers and quickened her pace toward the Academy gates.

Then, the wind shifted.

Yuna smelled the smoke.

She stopped dead in her tracks. The soft smile vanished from her lips.

A faint, sickly orange glow was pulsing steadily beyond the ridge that separated the road from the lower town.

Then, a scream shattered the night.

Yuna’s entire body went rigid. The sound was raw, human, and saturated with absolute terror.

Another scream followed, echoing off the hills. Then another, blending into a chorus of panic.

Yuna sprinted up the embankment, looking down into the valley toward the town below the Academy’s western ridge.

Massive pillars of flame were rising rapidly above the thatched rooftops, eating into the night sky.

”...No.”

Her fingers went slack. The bundle of wildflowers dropped, scattering across the dirt road, entirely forgotten.

Yuna drew the Lightning Sword from its case, the steel hissing in the dark, and ran toward the fire.

The slaughter had already begun.

The demonic vanguard had breached the outer streets with terrifying efficiency. They were not mindless beasts. Some wore mismatched, blood-stained plates of stolen human armor. Others wielded crude but devastating iron weaponry.

Several massive brutes wore heavy iron chains wrapped around their torsos—trophies stripped from captured, broken townspeople.

Trailing behind the vanguard were the scavengers: human slave traders, exiled criminals, and mercenaries who had sold their souls for demonic coin, promised first pick of the living captives.

The attack was a masterclass in terror. It was highly organized.

The first row of buildings was deliberately set ablaze to smoke the inhabitants out of their homes. As coughing families stumbled into the streets, a second heavily armed group blocked the intersections. A third group immediately began separating the strong from the weak, binding the prisoners in iron.

And somewhere, moving slowly through the smoke at the rear of the formation, was the architect of the nightmare: the Demon Peer.

Yuna reached the edge of the town square just as the burning frame of a two-story tavern collapsed. A family of three was trapped beneath the splintering timber, screaming as the flames licked their clothes.

She didn’t hesitate. She didn’t calculate the odds.

Raw lightning exploded beneath the soles of her boots.

She crossed the street in a blinding, blue-white blur. She didn’t try to lift the beam. She swung.

Thunder cracked violently through the smoke. The Lightning Sword sheared cleanly through the burning timber, shattering it into splinters.

”Run!” Yuna screamed, grabbing the mother by the arm and dragging her clear of the collapse.

The family stumbled away into an alley. Before Yuna could turn, a gargantuan demon lunged from the smoke behind them, its jagged spear aimed squarely at her spine.

Yuna pivoted on her heel. Her sword flashed upward.

The creature’s head hit the cobblestones before its body realized it was dead.

Another charged her flank. Then another.

Yuna moved through the burning square like a storm given human form. Violent, crackling lightning crawled up the length of her blade and arched across her shoulders. Every strike she delivered carried enough kinetic force to send armored demons crashing through the burning walls.

She wasn’t fighting a duel. She wasn’t fighting for a grade. She was fighting to put a wall of lethal voltage between the monsters and the fleeing civilians.

A demon thrust a heavy halberd toward her chest. Yuna parried, letting the lightning travel down the wooden shaft, electrocuting the beast before she stepped in and severed its throat.

Another tried to blindside her from the left. She didn’t even swing her sword. She spun, driving a lightning-reinforced elbow directly into its jaw, shattering the bone, before finishing it with a vicious downward slash.

Three more heavily armored brutes rushed her simultaneously, hoping to crush her with sheer mass.

”Too slow,” she hissed.

Thunder erupted in the confined space. The entire street illuminated in a blinding, sustained flash of white.

When the light faded and the smoke cleared, all three demons were violently thrown back, their armor scorched black and smoking.

But as Yuna lowered her blade, her chest heaving, her eyes scanned the perimeter beyond the fallen bodies. The dread finally set in.

There were far too many of them.

And they were not retreating. They were not breaking formation out of fear. They were systematically moving to surround her, cutting off every alleyway and escape route.

A low, terribly calm voice echoed from the thickest part of the smoke.

”Found her.”
