Demon Lord reborn as The Hero's Child

As Kōya sat down, Haru leaned forward and whispered, ”You realize you’re going to become everyone’s least favorite person, right?”

”Why?”

”Because you’re making the rest of us look like idiots.”

Kōya considered apologizing for his competence, but decided against it. For the next hour, he found himself entirely absorbed in the lesson. There was a profound, quiet satisfaction in discovering that the world could be understood through systems and formulas. Not everything had to be conquered, dominated, or destroyed.

Some things could simply be studied. It was a distinction that was becoming increasingly vital to his new existence.

During the midday break, Haru appointed himself as Kōya’s personal guide, dragging him across the sprawling campus.

”I’m showing you the important tactical locations,” Haru declared.

They crossed the western courtyard, arriving at the training grounds. Enormous, flattened fields of dirt and stone were filled with shouting students practicing sword forms, spear thrusts, and magical reinforcements. Instructors barked sharp corrections from raised wooden platforms.

Kōya stopped at the fence line, his eyes narrowing. The forms were incredibly crude compared to the brutal, flawless efficiency Kaela had drilled into him. But it was far from useless. He cataloged the different philosophies at play: one instructor favored overwhelming momentum, another built an impenetrable defensive structure, while a third taught aura circulation to preserve stamina.

Haru nudged his shoulder. ”You like this place.”

”I did not say that.”

”You’ve been staring at that swordsman’s footwork for five minutes without blinking.”

”I am evaluating their lethal flaws.”

”That’s basically you saying you like it.”

Kōya turned away. ”It is not.”

Their next stop was the central library. Kōya halted so abruptly that Haru walked directly into his back. The structure was magnificent. A central spire pierced the low-hanging clouds, with dozens of enclosed stone walkways and stained-glass wings branching out like an ancient, petrified tree.

Haru groaned. ”Oh no.”

Kōya was already moving toward the massive iron-wrought doors.

”Kōya. Stop.” Haru grabbed the back of his uniform jacket. ”Don’t.”

Kōya looked over his shoulder. ”I am merely observing the architecture.”

”You have the exact expression you make right before you vanish for twelve hours. Your mother warned me about the storage closet incident.”

Kōya’s eyes darkened slightly. ”She compromised my intelligence network.”

Haru laughed, pulling him away from the stairs. But before he turned, Kōya looked up at the massive, gilded inscription carved into the archway above the doors:

KNOWLEDGE IS THE MEMORY OF THOSE WHO CAME BEFORE.

The words struck a deep, resonant chord in his chest. Those who came before. The ancient heroes. The martyrs. Mirei. Seiya. Raizen. The figures who had violently carved the shape of the world, leaving behind only fractured echoes in the stone. He placed a hand flat against the heavy wood of the door, feeling the cold iron underneath.

Then, he pulled his hand away. ”Later.”

Haru exhaled a breath of relief. ”You actually have self-control.”

They finished their patrol at the botanical gardens in the northern sector. Massive glass domes housed flora from across the continents. Iridescent flowers hovered inches above the soil, and thick vines pulsed with a slow, bioluminescent rhythm. Beyond the main greenhouses stood a smaller, isolated structure wrapped in a thin, crackling blue barrier.

Kōya’s gaze locked onto it. ”What is the strategic purpose of that structure?”

”Restricted research,” Haru said dismissively. ”No idea what’s in there.”

Kōya stepped closer, analyzing the weave of the ward. The magic was old. It lacked the primal, chaotic signature of Raizen’s era, but it was deeply entrenched—likely cast by an archmage who had been dead for centuries. An emblem was etched into the stone pathway:

AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY.

He stared at the shimmering blue threshold. He could break it. It would require precision, but he could dismantle the matrix in under a minute. Yet, as he watched the arcane energy ripple, he turned away. He had learned a valuable lesson today. Not every locked door required an immediate breach.

Some secrets could wait in the dark.

By the end of his first week, a rhythm had established itself. Kōya attended his lectures. He trained his body in the evenings. He absorbed the library’s texts with clinical efficiency, and he ate his meals with Haru.

And every single morning, he watched Haru launch a catastrophic campaign to impress Aoi.

The boy’s tactical failures were spectacular. On Monday, he offered to carry her heavy texts; Aoi smiled politely and declined. On Tuesday, he attempted to perform an advanced sword flourish near the training grounds and tripped over his own scabbard. On Wednesday, he tried to interject during an advanced magical theorem debate and confidently stated the exact reverse of the correct equation.

By Friday, Haru had managed to corner her in a hallway and execute a completely normal, three-minute conversation about a history assignment. Kōya watched from the shadows of an archway. When Haru finally returned, he looked as if he had just survived a grueling siege.

”She talked to me,” Haru gasped, leaning against the stone wall.

”I observed the exchange.”

”For three whole minutes.”

”That is generally the minimum duration required to exchange basic information.”

”I think I’m making actual progress.”

Kōya nodded approvingly. ”You are. You managed to remain vertical the entire time.”

Haru’s smile widened, bright and unbothered by the insult. ”You’re right.”

Watching him, Kōya realized something profound. He was enjoying Haru’s failures. Not out of malice, but because of the aftermath. In Kōya’s past life, failure meant a severed head, a burned city, or the end of a bloodline. He had spent centuries surrounded by generals and lords who were utterly paralyzed by the terror of making a mistake.

But here, failure was mundane. Students failed to cast spells. They failed exams. They failed in combat spars and humiliated themselves in social engagements. And then, the very next morning, they woke up and tried again. No one was executed. No homelands were conquered.

It was a strange, resilient kind of beauty.

That evening, as the sun dipped behind the western spires, Kōya sat alone on the wide stone steps of the main hall. The courtyard was bathed in twilight. The ambient sounds of the academy washed over him—a professor shouting about late essays, the distant clatter of wooden training swords, the laughter of students heading toward the dormitories.

Haru dropped onto the step beside him, handing him a canteen of water. They sat in comfortable silence for a long time.

Kōya looked out over the sprawling grounds. For centuries, he had believed with absolute certainty that power was the only true foundation of existence. Power protected. Power commanded. Power drew the line between the living and the dead. But sitting here, he realized that nobody in this fortress cared about the weight of his soul. They cared if he showed up to class, if he could hold a shield line, and if he was willing to pass the bread at dinner.

The former Supreme Demon Lord, a creature who had shattered continents and drowned armies in blood, had finally found his greatest challenge: existing quietly.

Kōya smiled. It was a small, genuine shifting of his features.

Haru caught it immediately. ”What’s funny?”

”Nothing.”

”You just smiled.”

”I possess the facial musculature required to do so.”

”I didn’t say you were physically incapable,” Haru laughed, leaning back on his elbows. ”You’ll get used to it here.”

Kōya looked toward the dying light on the horizon. ”Perhaps I will.”

But as the words left his mouth, a sudden movement caught his eye. Far beyond the Academy’s outer walls, past the iron gates and the protective wards, a massive flock of black birds suddenly erupted from the treeline. They scattered into the darkening sky, frantic and chaotic.

Kōya’s posture went rigid. His eyes tracked the erratic flight pattern. The instincts he had been trying so hard to bury flared to life. Birds did not scatter in that formation without a predator. Something heavy, cold, and immensely powerful had just disturbed the woods.

He waited, his hand hovering over his thigh where his sword should have been.

But the birds vanished into the dusk, and the forest settled back into silence. Nothing emerged from the tree line. The Academy wards remained placid and blue.

Slowly, Kōya forced his muscles to relax. Perhaps it was just a stray beast. Perhaps.

He turned his attention back to the courtyard. The magical lamps were burning bright and warm. The halls were loud with the petty, beautiful problems of the living. Tomorrow, there would be another brutal alchemy lesson, another terrible meal, and another ridiculous, doomed attempt by Haru to speak to Aoi.

Despite the cold shadow lingering at the edge of the woods, Kōya found that he was already looking forward to it.
