Reborn As Super Heiress

Chapter 1380: Chapter 1365: Glowing Fish of the Seabed

The Bluefin Tuna probably isn’t quite sure what’s going on either, but now that it’s been collected into Huo Sining’s Space, it likely can’t think anymore.

The dolphins circled around the spot where the Bluefin Tuna had just disappeared, unable to find their target, and eventually dispersed.

Having harvested such a large Golden Spearfish right after entering the sea, Huo Sining was naturally very happy, but after putting this big fellow into Space, she felt that something wasn’t quite right.

Bluefin Tuna are oceanic migratory fish that usually operate in groups. These groups are typically composed of multiple species, which may include Longfin, Yellowfin Tuna, Bigeye Snapper, Spearfish, Flat Keel Skipjack, Skipjack Tuna, Pomfret, and others. In other words, these creatures generally do not act alone but move together in a group.

Why would this Bluefin Tuna be darting around the sea all by itself? Had it lost the group?

Just as Huo Sining was feeling curious, a group of dolphins suddenly changed direction and swam toward another area of the sea.

It wasn’t long before the dolphins, chasing a group of small fish and shrimp, reached a marine current location where the seaweed was lush, plankton was abundant, and the fish were plentiful. Upon arriving, the dolphins couldn’t wait to feast heartily.

While feeling perplexed, Huo Sining saw a large fishing vessel not far away slowly rowing in, causing the fish at the seabed to flee toward the high seas. Among those fish, there was indeed the large school of Golden Spearfish that Huo Sining had seen earlier.

The ship was flying a red flag, which indicated it was likely a commercial fishing vessel from Huaxia Country. The nets on these vessels were cast into the deep sea and had enormous mesh sizes, evidently targeting those large Golden Spearfish.

The Golden Spearfish grow slowly. Coupled with years of marine overfishing, their numbers have drastically decreased.

To control the population of these fish species, domestic fishing of Golden Spearfish in inland seas has already been banned, forcing these commercial fishing vessels to venture far into the high seas for Golden Spearfish.

The price of Golden Spearfish is high, but encountering a school of them is not easy. Seeing the number of Golden Spearfish in this school, Huo Sining knew that this time, this fishing vessel’s haul would be significant.

Of course, finding is sharing; since she had encountered these fish, Huo Sining naturally wouldn’t leave empty-handed, allowing others to take everything.

Anyway, with so many Golden Spearfish, it was impossible for the fishing vessel to catch them all, and getting some would be good enough.

Seeing the fishing vessel cast its net and start slowly hauling it back, many freed Golden Spearfish, terrified, began to flee in all directions.

Witnessing this, Huo Sining directed the dolphins toward the school of Golden Spearfish while quickly collecting all the Golden Spearfish she could touch into her ring.

After several trips, Huo Sining managed to gather a few of each species in the group, including Longfin, Yellowfin Tuna, Bigeye Snapper, Spearfish, Flat Keel Skipjack, Skipjack Tuna, Pomfret, and others. She didn’t take too many, as these fish were not intended for sale but just for her and her elders and friends to savor some freshness after returning.

Having caught enough fish, Huo Sining was preparing to return, but midway, she suddenly saw white and blue light deep in the ocean, like searchlights scanning back and forth beneath.

What was that?

Huo Sining’s heart stirred, thinking it might be another treasure. She quickly patted the dolphin’s head, signaling it to dive down.

This place was already a deep-water area, with depths reaching four to five hundred meters. Once the dolphin dove beyond two hundred meters, it was unwilling to go further, and Huo Sining didn’t force it to follow.

The pressure in the deep sea is immense. Although dolphins are aquatic creatures, diving beyond 300 meters is typically their limit. Any deeper, the pressure becomes too great and could collapse their chest cavity, endangering their lives.

Huo Sining possessed the Water-Repelling Pearl, so she wasn’t affected by the pressure. As for Qibao, Huo Sining couldn’t quite explain why, but perhaps mermaids are naturally the kings of the sea, showing no reaction in water. Following her, Qibao dived to three to four hundred meters deep, still breathing normally with a natural expression, showing no signs of discomfort.

Huo Sining was following the lights at the bottom of the sea. She thought perhaps Heavenly Eye had spotted another treasure. However, the deeper she dove, the more lights appeared before her eyes.

The lights were red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple, resembling ghost fires, and they moved around. This made Huo Sining feel odd. As she descended to a depth near the seabed, she finally saw the source of the lights and was left speechless.

These were no treasures; just a school of bioluminescent fish at the bottom of the sea.

Most of these fish were Luminous-Lidded Snapper, Dragonhead Fish, Lantern Eye Fish, and others. They glowed because of a special fluorescent enzyme in their bodies, which, when catalyzed, would cause a biochemical reaction. This process made the luciferin absorb energy, become oxidized luciferin, and release photons, thus emitting light.

“Sister, that fish is so strange! It looks like an alien spaceship!”

Qibao was utterly fascinated by the sight of so many glowing fish and pointed at one, eager to touch it.

Upon seeing this, Huo Sining hurriedly pulled Qibao back, away from the strange fish.

“Don’t touch it! That’s an Electric Ray; it discharges electricity to attack. If you’re hit by it, it will be very painful!”

Huo Sining said sternly.

Hearing that the fish could discharge electricity, Qibao immediately shrank back beside Huo Sining, not daring to move.

The Electric Ray had small, protruding eyes, with raised edges around its blowhole, and wide front nasal flaps extending to the lower lip. Its tail had lateral folds, and its back was reddish-brown with a few irregular dark spots.

This fish was shaped like an almost circular disc, with large electrical organs between its head and pectoral fins, resembling a UFO or flying saucer from movies.

The Electric Ray didn’t have much flavor and wasn’t of culinary value, but it was one of the few electric fish in the ocean’s depths.

It lived on the seabed, with a pair of small eyes on the dorsal anterior side. Its head and pectoral fin had kidney-shaped honeycomb-like muscles that acted as live generators. These muscles were composed of 6,000 to 10,000 regularly arranged muscle plates, separated by connective tissue with numerous nerves extending directly to the central nervous system.

Each muscle plate functioned as a small battery, arranged in hexagonal columns, with one end as the positive pole and the other as the negative pole. The discharge principle involved converting the nervous energy in the muscle plates into electrical energy.

Each muscle plate generated only 150 millivolts of electricity, but collectively, nearly ten thousand “small batteries” could produce a high voltage.

In fact, relatively speaking, the Electric Ray wasn’t considered a dangerous creature because, although capable of discharging electricity, its power wasn’t strong enough to do more than temporarily paralyze someone.

In the ocean depths, the truly dangerous electric creatures were the Electric Eels. Known as marine high-tension lines, they could reach a maximum voltage of 800 volts and discharge electricity at will, controlling both discharge time and intensity, with a pulse frequency of up to 300 per second.

To put it simply, these creatures were more formidable than ten military batons, and if they stung you, you would suffer greatly, even if it didn’t kill you.
