Rebirth: A Cinderella's Counterattack

Chapter 255: Chapter 238: Old Madam He Passed Away

”Mom!” Hearing Huang Yueran’s voice, He Wenyu couldn’t stay seated, she immediately ran over to support Huang Yueran.

Luo Qianqian picked up the phone, ”Hello, Godfather, Godmother is okay, Xiao Yu and I are here.”

”Alright, I’m on my way to the store, you all wait for me.”

”Okay, goodbye, Godfather.” Luo Qianqian hung up the phone, and seeing the mother and daughter, she had no choice but to wave for the waitstaff, ”Bring a cup of hot drink, the most popular one.”

”Xiao Yu.” Huang Yueran looked at her daughter in front of her, and tears started to fall: ”We’re not in this city anymore!”

Although she didn’t understand what was going on, Luo Qianqian knew it must be some serious trouble caused by He Juncai that made her godmother so out of control.

”Godmother, let’s go back to the store for now, Godfather will be back soon.” Luo Qianqian frowned, wisely choosing not to ask about the cause of the situation, since whatever she needed to know, she would find out sooner or later, and what she wasn’t meant to know wouldn’t help even if she knew.

Luo Qianqian watched Huang Yueran, her steps faltering as she crossed the street with He Wenyu’s help, feeling uncertain in her heart, not knowing whether she should follow, after all, it wasn’t her place to meddle in the affairs of her godmother’s family.

But to her surprise, once Huang Yueran entered the store, she immediately called out, ”Zilan, come here.”

Hearing this, knowing that there was no intention to hide the family matters from her, Luo Qianqian followed behind He Wenyu and entered the store.

”Yueran, what happened?” An Zilan rushed over upon hearing the noise, and only relaxed once she saw her daughter and her close friend’s mother and daughter were safe, ”Are you alright?” She quickly poured a glass of water for Huang Yueran and gently patted her back.

”Zilan...” Huang Yueran burst into tears holding An Zilan, ”My Granny, she’s gone.”

Luo Qianqian and He Wenyu were both stunned, but they didn’t feel much, since Granny Cong Xin was quite annoying, lacked self-awareness, and was unfair to her son; she never managed to treat him equally.

”She’s gone, so what?” An Zilan was puzzled, as she had never witnessed deep affection between Huang Yueran and Granny.

”She was killed by my nephew!” Huang Yueran sobbed, ”And now he’s come for me, if he could heartlessly hurt his own brother, what might Xiao Yu, a distant relative we barely see once in a blue moon, be capable of doing...” She left the rest unsaid, but the people in the room understood.

”What’s this about his own brother?” An Zilan’s brow furrowed. Luo Qianqian and He Wenyu were just as confused, having been very curious but never voicing their questions.

”He’s my brother’s illegitimate child from outside.” He Jun entered the shop, and after hearing his daughter’s call, he sensed something was wrong. He couldn’t get through to his own home by phone, so he could only call his father-in-law’s house to ask what had happened. After learning the news, he was also shocked, ”That woman left the child behind and ran off with someone. My brother had my sister-in-law take care of him, but she disapproved, so Granny took him in. Whenever there was something tasty in the past, it was all for Juncai, but now it all went to the little one. Juncai, angry and resentful, threw his brother to the ground. Granny tried to intervene but was pushed away, and she never got up again. Afraid of trouble, Juncai stole the family’s money and, relying on memory, came to us.”

”It’s a good thing that house was sold,” An Zilan said after hearing the news, her heart palpitating. ”Why don’t you guys go out for a few days? Don’t just wait here for that person to show up.”

”Let’s leave this place.” Huang Yueran looked at He Jun with tearful eyes, and He Jun felt a pang of distress.

”Godmother, let’s think this through more carefully, but for now, let’s close the shop for a few days. The two of you should go out and have some fun. As for Xiao Yu, with Zhuzi and my brother at my place, I don’t think that guy would dare to cause a scene. If it comes to it, I can also take a couple of days off and stay at home with Xiao Yu,” Luo Qianqian said with a sigh, looking at Huang Yueran who was obviously on the verge of collapsing. ”Actually, I want to call the police, but I’m afraid his biological parents haven’t done so and might just say he died accidentally.”

”Calling the police won’t do any good, you’ll just get scolded,” Xiao Mei, an employee from the store, added. ”Sister Huang, if you trust me, leave the store to me these few days. I’ll have my brother help me out; he’s an ex-soldier. Although his leg isn’t that agile, he can still make sure that man doesn’t dare come and cause trouble!”

”Mom, why don’t you and dad go out for a walk? Didn’t you say last time you wanted to travel to the Capital City? It’s perfect since Brother Jiayou is there; he can be your tour guide. Have a good time, okay?” He Wenyu also tried to persuade them, knowing that they could neither fight nor scold the other family and could only avoid them: ”I’ll be at Qianqian’s place, and I’ll just take a few days off. He’ll naturally go back when he runs out of money.”

”Mom, don’t open the store these few days, why don’t you go out with Uncle Lin? The child knows you, he might start causing trouble if he doesn’t find godmother. Brother Zhuzi is busy with school, Brother Jiayou is too far away, and Xiao Yu and I can’t be of much help,” Luo Qianqian also suggested. ”Join godmother and go out to have some fun and relax.”

An Zilan frowned, with the children all around and that person being so dangerous, how could she possibly go out? Before she could speak, He Jun interrupted.

”Xiao Yu, Qianqian, just stay put. Xiao Mei, you’ll take care of the store for these few days. Sis, you don’t open the store either, come over to our place. It will give you peace of mind to be with the child,” He Jun shook his head. ”If something happens and we run away, leaving the child behind, do you think I’m the kind of father who shirks his responsibilities?”

”But that man is really fierce,” He Wenyu’s eyes also reddened. She was truly scared, especially after hearing that the man had actually killed someone. Even though she despised that old lady, she never had such thoughts.

Luo Qianqian, however, furrowed her brows. After so many years, how could He Juncai still find the store? With the city changing so rapidly every day, how could he so easily find the place just by memories of several years ago? And how could he be sure that godmother would definitely be here? Something felt off about the whole situation.

”Looks like we can’t get glasses fitted today. Mom, go close the shop, will you? Then call Uncle Lin to let him know, so he doesn’t make a wasted trip tonight. He should just head back home,” Luo Qianqian decided. ”Xiao Yu and I will go buy groceries. Mom and godparents, you should head home first. Sister Xiao Mei, thank you for taking care of things here.”

”Yeah, Xiao Mei, the store’s in your hands for the next few days,” An Zilan also nodded in agreement, remaining relatively calm since it wasn’t her own family matter.

”Don’t worry, Sister An,” Xiao Mei nodded. ”Sister Huang, you can go home with peace of mind. I’ve got the store.”

Huang Yueran nodded, grabbed her purse, put on her coat, wiped away her tears, and followed An Zilan out of the store. An Zilan locked the store door, handed a few banknotes to Luo Qianqian, patted He Wenyu’s head, and said softly and gently, ”Don’t be frugal, and try not to worry too much.”

”Mom, don’t worry, if I don’t know how to make money, how would I not know how to spend it? That would make me a big fool, right?” Luo Qianqian said with a playful smile, nodding. ”Mom, when you get home and see any mess, don’t mind it. We’ll clean up when we get back—no scolding allowed, okay?”

Only when she saw the three of them truly leave did Luo Qianqian change her expression, ”Xiao Yu, let’s go find my brother.”
