Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 547: Chapter 542: The Warm Places

Location:Zhū’kethara

Date/Time:The fifth Void Day, 9942 AZI

Realm:Upper Realm

On the fifth day, with four days of a realm’s dead still going through him and one more to come, Ren did the only useful thing available to a man in that condition, which was paperwork.

Denvahr holds the margin out past the eastern line, which is a way of saying he holds nothing anybody else wanted, and had done it for a long time without asking his king for one thing. Then Ren had come out to his ground with soldiers, and gone down his well, and Denvahr had waited two days at the mouth of it and hauled a Kael’thoren back up hand over hand alongside his king without being told to and without asking. And three hours after they were out, with nobody near it and no noise worth the name, the mouth had gone. A shallow dish in the sand where there had been a well since his grandfather’s grandfather, and the sand already running into it.

Ren had nothing to give the man for that. He had a well.

It was not a large matter. Four lines in a roll and a warrant against the eastern account, and it could have been done by a clerk in an afternoon, and Ren had told the clerk to leave it and had carried it since Ashwhisper because he wanted his own hand on the bottom of it.

He read it through twice. Sinking, timbering, and a man to do the work who knew what he was doing — and a second well on the same holding, because the first was going to stand four hundred paces from a hole in the world and a man ought to have a choice about which one he draws from.

Then he wrote, at the bottom, under the warrant, in his own hand:

Not a courtesy.

He looked at that for a while and did not strike it out.

It is a small thing, and he knew it was a small thing. That was most of why he was doing it. Four days of eight million people had come through him and there was not one part of any of it he had been able to take hold of and fix, and here was four lines and a warrant and a hole in the ground that would have water in it by spring, and a man who has spent five days being a channel will take a hole in the ground and be grateful.

Kaelen came in without knocking, which he has done for as long as Ren has known him and has never once been told not to.

”That is the well.”

”It is.”

Kaelen read the bottom line, and his face did not do anything, and he did not ask.

”He will not know what to do with this.”

”He will work it out.”

”He will stand in his yard holding a king’s hand on a piece of paper about a well,” Kaelen said, ”and he will not sleep for a week.” He rolled it. ”I will take it myself. It will be there before the roads open.”

***

The Path went quiet at dusk on the fifth day.

Not all at once. The realm finished as it always finishes — the forge quarter stopping together, the districts going one after another like lamps, the border stations last of the old holdings because the shifts run late out there and always have.

Then the west.

Eight hundred thousand people, hours after everybody else, in no hurry whatsoever.

Ren stayed open for the whole of it and did not once put his hands down off the parapet.

And what came up the threads was not eight hundred thousand people.

It was a few thousand lights carrying eight hundred thousand people.

The ones with enough demon in them had come onto the Path by themselves, in their own time, without anybody arranging it — as a demon does, because that is what the blood does when it is there. Vines coming in at the throat on the men, seeds showing at the brow on the women. Some of them have crystals. They are in.

The rest are not.

So Ren stood on a terrace and heard a nation of them as a man hears a full room through a door somebody is holding open for him. Everything arriving relayed. Everything arriving through the handful who were inside, carrying what their neighbors said because their neighbors could not put it anywhere themselves.

Ren had put his own name to every part of that resettlement, and had been reasonably pleased with himself for it.

They did not know how to do the rite either. That came up plainly too, because nothing arrives on the Path with its dignity arranged. Nobody had ever taught them. A rite is a thing you learn from your grandmother at the back of a hall when you are six years old and bored, and there were no halls where these people came from and no grandmothers who had been allowed one, and eight hundred thousand adults had come to the fifth evening of the year with a rite in front of them they had heard about and never once stood in.

So they built it out of what they had.

Some of them did it demon fashion, badly, having been told the shape of it that week by somebody who had it from somebody else. Some of them did it in the human way their mothers had — kneeling, which no demon does, and speaking to the ground rather than to the room. A great many of them did it in no fashion at all, which is to say they stood up in a field and said a name and sat down, and that is the entire rite and always was, and Ren felt several thousand of them work that out for themselves inside the same hour and stop apologizing.

Because they had been apologizing. That came up the threads too.

A man in the third holding said his mother’s name and then said, to nobody, she was not one of yours, and Ren had to stand very still on a terrace for a while after that one.

They were human names. Most of them were human names. Mothers and fathers and half of them dead in the Mid Realm of things demons do not die of — of being poor, of being cold, of being noticed by the wrong office on the wrong morning. Eight thousand years of demon dead came through that channel in five days, and it had never in all that time carried a single name belonging to somebody who was not a demon, and now it was carrying tens of thousands of them, and the Path took every one without any difficulty at all.

That was worth knowing. Ren filed it and did not examine it, because there was a woman in the ninth holding on her fourth name, and he was not going to be somewhere else for it.

It went on a long time after dark.

Somewhere in the sixth holding a woman got up and said a name and could not remember whether she was supposed to sit down again, and stood there, and the field stood with her until she did. Somewhere in the second, a boy of about nine said one and then asked, out loud, whether it counted, because his grandmother had been human all the way through and he did not know if that was allowed. Nobody in that field had the answer. They let him say it anyway, and then they let him say it a second time to be sure, and then somebody put a hand on his shoulder and the next person stood up.

That one went through eight million people, and Ren felt what it did to every one of them.

When the last of the west finished, there was a gap, the kind there is after a room has been full and stops being full, and then the west went quiet too, and the year was over.

Ren stood on the high terrace with the wind coming up out of the cut and let the last of it go through him and away.

***

He went down to the healing wing afterward, because it was late and there was nowhere else he wanted to be.

Theron was awake. Of course he was awake.

”You heard it.”

”I heard all of it.” There was almost nothing in his voice. ”Every one.”

Ren sat down. There is a chair by that bed which was put there for Maelith and has been used by everybody except Maelith, and it took his weight badly, and he sat in it anyway.

”The man in the third holding,” Theron said.

”Yes.”

”He apologized.”

”He did.”

”His mother was a weaver. She was killed by people who did not think of it as killing. He has been carrying her name most of his life with nobody to say it to, and tonight he said it out loud in front of eight hundred thousand of his own, and then he apologized for it.” Theron’s jaw was not working properly. ”To you.”

”Not to me.”

”To the whole arrangement.” One hand moved on the blanket, half an inch, which was the entire amount available to him. ”Da’Ren. It is not that they think they are guests.”

”Then what is it?”

”They have never belonged anywhere.” Theron’s voice did not rise, because it could not. ”Not there. Not before there. Not their mothers, not their mothers’ mothers, not one generation back as far as any of them can count. They were moved on and moved on and moved on, and now they are standing in a field on good land that is theirs, being told they are home, and they cannot feel it, because there has never once in the whole history of them been a thing that felt like that.”

Ren said nothing.

”And now they can hear it.” Theron turned his head, which cost him. ”That is the new part. Half of them stood in that field tonight next to somebody who was on the Path and could tell. You do not need a name for a thing to know you are outside it.”

”I heard them relayed.”

”They know they were relayed.”

Theron was quiet a while.

”I want a hall out there,” he said. ”Before the next one.”

”No.”

Something came up in Theron’s face that had not been anywhere in it all evening, and Ren let it stand there and did not explain himself.

”That is not the answer,” Theron said.

”It is the answer to the question you asked.”

”It was not the question I meant.”

”They have land and law and a city and their own men keeping order in their own streets, and I signed every part of it myself, and I was pleased about it.” Ren put his head back against the wall. ”And a hall in the west is another field. A good field with a roof on it. It is still outside.”

”Then what is not outside?”

”The mountain.”

Theron did not say anything for long enough that Ren checked he had not gone under.

”The Remembrance.”

”Their own hall in it. Their own wall, in the same stone as every house in this realm, with the others.” He said it flatly, because it was not a gift and he did not want it heard as one. ”Every demon alive who ever wanted to know where he came from has walked into that mountain and put his hand on something. They cannot. That is the whole of the difference, and I have been failing to see it since the day they arrived.”

”They have no crystals.”

”So we make them.”

”Most of them cannot give you two generations.”

”Then it will hold two generations, and his daughter will have three, and hers will have four,” Ren said. ”Somebody has to be first in the wall.”

Theron let out a breath that did not go all the way in again.

”Vaelith tried. In the first year. You were on the ledge for it.” His hand had closed on the blanket without his appearing to know it. ”She put them on a matrix by the hundred, and the ones with the blood grew a crystal, and the rest got a handful of grit and a very kind woman explaining why. I stood in that room for eleven days. I translated it. I am not arranging that again on a larger scale.”

”That was the wrong instrument.” 𝒻𝑟ℯℯ

”It was the only instrument.”

”It was the only one then.” Ren looked at the ceiling for a moment. ”She built another one in Cinderfall. For the pill.”

Theron went very still.

”It reads four bloods,” Ren said. ”Threaded, all at once, and it renders them so a man can look at the thing and understand what he is looking at, and it does not care in the slightest which of the four is the demon. It is not a memorial stone. It is half of one.”

The room was quiet for a while.

”You want to take the crystal that counted them,” Theron said, ”and make it the thing that puts them in the wall.”

”I want Zhuvara and Vaelith in a room together in the morning. I want them to tell me it cannot be done, and then I want them to do it.” Ren got up. ”It will take years. It will be wrong for a long while, and everybody will watch it being wrong, and I am going to let them watch.”

”Da’Ren.”

”What.”

Theron’s mouth moved. It took him a moment to get there.

”I have never once asked you for anything for myself.”

”I know.”

”I am not starting now.” He was already going under, and his eyes had closed, and the rest of it came out slowly. ”But when it is built. I want to be carried into it.”

Ren stood in the doorway a while after that, and then went up, and did not think about any of it again that night — because it was a small thing, and it was for the dead, and there was nothing in it that had anything whatever to do with the Path.

***

He was very tired. That is permitted; it happens every year and it goes away.

What was not usual was the web.

Ren had seen it on the first morning and had spent all five days unable to stop seeing it.

The threads were thicker.

Not everywhere. In patches — a district on the northern shelf, three villages out past the salt road, a whole quarter of his own capital — and they were not thicker because he had done anything to them. Four men were holding those pieces instead of him and the pieces had gone wide. That should have been the entire observation. It was not.

Because things were opening.

Where the threading had gone wide, there were places he had never once seen, because in his whole reign they had never been anything but dark. Small shut rooms, hanging off the web at intervals, everywhere, in numbers he could not begin to count. He had taken them for knots since the day he first looked. They are not knots. They have insides. And in the wide places a few had come unshut, and what was in them was old, and it was his people’s and no demon alive ever put it there.

Ren had no idea what he was looking at.

And over the whole of it, moving:

Light.

Flecks of it, no larger than a grain, running the thickened threads both directions at once, glancing off the knots and carrying on. And they had color, and the color was not one color — every color, cycling and blending as they went, so a stretch of web would flare and shade and go quiet again. There is no essence on Doha that does that.

Ren had seen it exactly once before, on the day a girl not quite a year old came onto the Path.

And where the light went, the web was warm.

That is the word, and there is not a better one. The Path had never been warm. It had been a great cold accurate thing that told a king where his people were and what had been done to them, and now there were stretches of it like standing near a banked fire, and old lights that had been going down for centuries were sitting in the warm and not going down. One of them was in his own great hall, four rows from the front, with his leaves down to a handful, who had said eleven names that afternoon and was not going down.

The brightest of them was in the city under his feet, and he did not have to go looking for her. Soravael was asleep and doing nothing whatsoever, and in the web she was a rainbow star, throwing heat out in every direction into a network that had never held any.

He watched something he had no name for happening to his people, and could not decide whether he was permitted to be glad about it.

***

He went and found Maethys, because he could not leave it alone and there was nobody else in the realm to take it to.

Not formally. The old man had a small library he had taken over without anybody granting it to him, and he was in it, at that hour, on that night, which surprised nobody. Ren stood in the doorway and described what he was seeing and waited.

Maethys listened the whole way through without interrupting once, which he does not do in council and had apparently decided not to do here.

”Describe the color again.”

Ren described the color again.

”And it is warm where they go.”

”And it stays warm for a day after they have gone.”

Maethys sat back. He is a hundred and eighty thousand years old, and he had the face of a man who has been handed a tool and cannot find which end goes in his hand.

”I do not know,” he said.

”You are a bondseer.”

”I am. I have read at depth for longer than your house has existed, and I have never seen that, and I was never taught it, and there is nothing in me that recognizes it.” A pause. ”Which is not the same as it being new.”

”Meaning what?”

”Meaning I would not assume you are watching something begin, Da’Ren. I would assume you are watching something resume.” Maethys folded his hands. ”The two look identical from where you are standing, and they are not remotely the same thing, and the difference is that one of them has happened before, and somebody once knew what to call it, and that somebody is dead.”

Ren did not answer for a while.

”Everything this year has been that.”

”It is going to go on being that for some time,” Maethys agreed. ”You ought to get used to the feeling, and you are not going to.”

***

Ren went back up to the terrace, because the wind was the only thing left that night that wanted nothing from him.

And there was the other thing, which he had noticed on the second day and had gone on noticing since.

The beast had not taken any of it.

It had always taken some. Five days of a realm’s grief coming through one man is not carried by the man alone and never has been, and for ten thousand years the beast had come up under it without being asked and shouldered whatever it could reach, and Ren had never in the whole of that time had to think about it, any more than a man thinks about his own spine.

This year it had stayed exactly where it was.

Not asleep. He would have known asleep. It was awake, and it was entirely aware of every name that came through, and it did not come up for one of them, and it was not sulking and it was not weakened, and it was not indifferent.

It was busy.

He looked inward, at the end of the year, at a thing that had been part of his own soul since before he had any memory of being without it, and found it turned away from him, working at something in a direction he had not known was there.

”What are you doing,” he said, out loud, on an empty terrace.

It did not answer.

It had never once not answered.
