Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 508: Chapter 503: The Old Era

Location:Obsidian Academy — Qin’s Private Study

Date/Time:9 Frostforge, 9942 AZI

Realm:Lower Realm, Doha

The ward hummed. Nothing else in the room made any sound at all.

Jayde sat with her hands loose on her knees and did the last of the arithmetic she had been doing for four days.

She had been in this room more times than she had bothered to count. Scroll towers that defied structural analysis. Three teapots on the desk, one of which had fossilized sometime around the beginning of the current century. The visitor’s chair had been conscripted for paperwork years ago, and nobody had ever conscripted it back, so she sat where she always sat, on the hard one by the shelves, with her tea going cold on a stack of provincial requisitions.

She had argued supply routes across that desk. She had watched him pour with the muscle memory of a man who had done it in that chair more times than the calendar had years.

She had never once, in any of it, counted the wards.

She had gone over it on the estate with Yinxin, who had listened and said almost nothing and then said do it properly or not at all, which was as close as Yinxin came to approval. She had gone over it with Isha, who had argued for two hours, and had been right about most of it, and had been overruled anyway.

[He is old and he is frightened and you are about to hand him a reason to be more frightened.] Reiko, from a long way off. The ward had the bond down to a thread, and the thread was warm and steady and entirely unhelpful.

I know.

[Do it anyway.]

I know.

***

Qin opened a drawer and took out a folder before she could speak.

It was not thick. It was old — the leather worn pale at the corners from a great deal of handling over a great many years. She recognized the wear pattern. She had put it on other files, in another life.

”I have been keeping this since the week you enrolled,” he said mildly. ”I am not going to apologize for it. I am the headmaster of an institution that sits on a seal, and when something anomalous walks through my gate I write it down.”

He opened it and did not read from it so much as glance to confirm what he already knew.

”You arrived at seventeen out of the frontier, from a background that should have produced somebody who could not read, and you could read. Not letters. Contracts. In your first month you renegotiated a stipend agreement with my bursar, and the bursar came to me afterward genuinely unsettled and could not explain to me why.

”You produced a cooking device that has since changed the economy of four provinces, and when my licensing office asked how you had conceived of it you said — I have it written here — it seemed obvious. Nothing has been obvious to anybody on this continent since the gate shut.

”You brought me a healer who found a fungal contamination in my herb stores in three days that four Academy physicians had missed for eight months, and when I remarked on it you told me you had competent people, as though competence were a thing one simply acquired.

”Your friends are a boy from a house everyone on this mountain assumed was finished and a young man nobody can place. Your household includes a woman with eyes I have never seen on any living thing and a man who moves like somebody who has been in a war and speaks like somebody paid to stand in front of other people.”

He turned a page he did not need to turn.

”And when you speak — this is the item I have come back to most often, and it took me a year to work out what was wrong with it — you speak about the future in decades. Everybody speaks about the future. The young speak about it in years and the old in seasons. You speak about it the way a person speaks about weather they have already lived through.”

He closed the folder.

”I do not know what you are. I have never known. I decided some time ago that you were on the side of the thing I have spent my life protecting, and that has been sufficient.” The pale eyes came up. ”It stopped being sufficient about an hour ago, and I am not going to be the second man in this room to pretend otherwise.”

***

Jayde looked at the two of them for a while.

She had a version of this prepared. She had built it on the walk up the mountain — careful, sequenced, laid out to give a man handholds so he could climb down into it at his own pace. She had used that structure before. It worked. It took about forty minutes, and it left the listener with the comfortable sense that they had reasoned their way to a conclusion rather than been handed one.

It was also going to take forty minutes she did not have, and at the end of it Qin would have believed her the way a man believes a very good argument.

She wanted him to believe her the way a man believes a wall.

”How deep are these wards?” she said.

Qin blinked. ”Seven layers. The outer three are mine. The inner four predate me.”

”Anything gets out through them?”

”Nothing has in ten thousand years.”

”Then don’t move,” Jayde said, ”and don’t reach for anything, and whatever happens in the next few seconds, remember that I asked first.”

Heizan put his bare feet on the floor.

She dropped the eyes.

***

It was not a removal. The thing she wore could not be removed and could not be broken, and she had learned in a dome full of dragons that it could be overrun — that if she pushed enough of herself up through it, it stopped being able to hold the shape it had been given and simply reported what was underneath.

She pushed a very little. Less than she had used to open a jar that morning.

The brown went out of her eyes like water off glass.

What came up underneath was gold, and inside the gold, banked down at the center of each one, a slow amber that was not reflecting the lamp because it was not reflecting anything.

Neither man made a sound.

So she let out the second thing. A thread of it. Not a display, not a pressure, nothing she would have called an output at all — the amount that leaked off her when she was tired and let her attention slip, which she had spent four years learning not to do.

The temperature in the study dropped.

Not fast. There was no wind and no sound and nothing moved, and the air simply stopped being the temperature it had been. Qin’s breath came out of him and hung there, white, in a room seven wards deep with no weather in it. The tea in his cup stopped steaming. The formation lamp went on burning and gave no heat that reached anything.

And the thing that arrived in the room with it was not a threat.

That was the part she could never explain to anybody who had not felt it. It did not threaten. It corrected. It sat in the space like a hand laid flat on a table, and every living thing in reach understood, in the oldest part of itself, that a very large thing was paying attention and had not yet decided anything.

Three seconds.

She pulled it back in.

The temperature climbed. The tea resumed steaming. The floor never moved.

***

Heizan’s hand had gone into his pocket and closed around something and stayed there.

Qin had already reached for his belt.

There was a stone on it. Small, unremarkable, gray-brown, about the size of a quail’s egg, and it was pulsing with a steady light that had not changed and did not change while she watched him stare at it.

He looked at the stone for a long moment.

Then he set it down on the desk, very carefully, with both hands, and did not take his fingers off it for a moment after it was down.

”Liwan’s instruments,” he said.

”I don’t know what that is.”

”Four years ago. In this room.” His voice had gone somewhere flat and far away. ”One of my teachers said the gods had abandoned Doha. She was making a point about funding. She was not being impious; she was being tired.” He was not looking at Jayde. ”The temperature dropped. Our breath went white. The tea stopped steaming. Something sat down in that room and looked at us for three seconds and then left, and the pressure was not hostile, and it was not aimed at anybody, and every one of us understood that we had been corrected.”

She had felt it.

Not from in here. Out on the grounds somewhere, with Eden asking whether she’d felt that rumble and saying the teachers looked frightened, and Jayde filing it as institutional fear she didn’t have the context to read. She had been carrying half of this for four years without knowing there was a half.

”And the seal was fine.”

”The seal was at ninety-three percent and had not moved.” His hands had come to rest flat on the desk. ”Five of us have not spoken about it since. Not once. Not to each other. I have sat in this chair perhaps four thousand times since, and every single time I have thought about it and every single time I have not said the word.”

Heizan took his hand out of his pocket.

There was a peach pit in it. Old, dried out, one side worn smooth by four years of living against a seam and being turned over by a thumb.

He looked at it. Then he put it back.

”It was the same,” he said. It was not a question.

”It was smaller,” Jayde said. ”What I just did was smaller. By a great deal.”

Nobody said anything.

Then Qin got out of his chair and knelt on the boards, both knees, and put his forehead to the floor in front of the desk of his own study.

***

”Ah,” said Heizan, from the chair on her left. ”There it is.”

Jayde did not move.

She had considered a lot of outcomes on the walk up. She had considered disbelief, which she was ready for. She had considered fear, which she had a plan for. She had considered him calling the guard, which would have been inconvenient and survivable, and she had considered him going very quiet and spending three months quietly deciding to have her killed, which was the one she had actually expected, because it was what she would have done.

She had not considered this, and she had no plan for it at all.

”Headmaster,” she said.

”Luminari.” Qin’s voice came off the floor. It was not a question either. He had not reasoned his way to it. ”Old Era. Old blood. I do not know the correct form of address. There has been nobody to teach it since before this Academy was raised, and I have read every fragment that survives and none of them wrote it down.”

He was wrong.

It was the wrong word. It was the wrong lineage, and it was one whole tier off the truth, and every fragment he had ever read had been written by people who used Luminari as a man in the dark uses the word light — for everything above him that he cannot see the shape of.

Correcting him meant naming what she actually was.

Naming what she actually was meant naming who had made her.

And her father’s name was on the foundation stones of the building they were sitting in.

Jayde said nothing at all.

***

”Get up,” she said.

Qin did not get up.

”I have been blood-sworn to this realm since before there was a calendar to date the oath by,” he said, into the floor. ”I swore it to a chain of custody I could not verify, over a seal I could not read, on the word of men who were already dead when I took it. I have kept it for ten thousand years on nothing but the assumption that it mattered.”

”It mattered.”

”You do not understand what I am telling you.” His hands were flat on the boards. ”I have wanted, every one of those years, for somebody to come who could take it off me. That is the whole of my private life. That is the thought I have had in the dark since before the invasions. Somebody will come who can carry this, and I will hand it to them, and I will be permitted to stop.”

He lifted his head.

”You can carry it.”

”Yes,” Jayde said. ”I can.”

”Then take it.”

”No.”

***

She let that sit in the room for a moment, because he needed to hear how flat it was.

”If I take it off you,” she said, ”then in three hundred years there is exactly one person on this world who knows what is under this mountain, and it is me, and the day somebody gets a blade into me the entire thing goes into the ground with my body and your successors go back to counting fifty years and hoping.

”That is the failure. That is the whole failure, and it already happened once, and it is the reason you have that folder and a column of dates you cannot explain. Somebody knew, and it lived in one place, and the place died.”

Qin was looking at her as though she had opened a door in a room he had built himself and measured twice.

”So no,” Jayde said. ”You are going to get up. You are going to keep that chair, and you are going to keep that stone on your belt, and I am going to spend the next couple of years teaching you what is under your own mountain until you can teach it to somebody who can teach it to somebody else, and by the time either of us stops being able to do it there will be four hundred people on this continent who could do it without either of us.

”That is not me taking it off you. That is me making certain it is never one man’s again.”

The room was quiet for a while.

Then Qin put a hand on the edge of his own desk and got up off the floor. Slowly. On his own schedule and nobody else’s. He sat back down in his chair and looked at his hands.

”That is not what I asked for,” he said.

”No.”

”It is better.” He said it without any pleasure at all. ”I dislike that a great deal.”

Heizan laughed — one short sound, entirely without humor in it, and then he leaned forward with his elbows on his knees and looked at her with his dark eyes wide open for the second time in four years.

”How—”

He stopped.

Jayde watched him get to the end of the question and find nothing there. He had been building it for two hours. How does a girl of twenty-one run a war? It had been a good question, and a sharp one, and it had rested on the assumption that the answer would have to come from somewhere, because things come from somewhere.

Now it was like asking a river where it got the water.

”Never mind,” Heizan said.

”Ask it anyway.”

”No.” He sat back. ”No, I have just understood that I have spent four hundred and six statements building a case that a student knew too much, and the correct response to all of it is yes, obviously. I would like to sit with how stupid that feels for a moment before I say anything else.”

”It wasn’t stupid. You were right about every observation in it.”

”I was right about the observations, and I had the wrong species.”

***

”There is one thing,” Jayde said, ”and then I want to talk about your charter.

”What I know, I did not learn on this world.”

She let that be the whole of it, and neither of them asked her what that meant, and she watched both of them not ask, and understood something about how the rest of her life was going to work.

Qin turned that over.

”Then I should have a name,” he said. ”Not the one on my roster. I am not going to write it down. I would simply like to know what I am addressing, before I spend the next thirty years addressing it wrongly.”

”You have a name for me.”

”Ashford is a cover.”

”Ashford is what you are getting.” She said it without any edge. ”Not because I distrust you — I trust you both further than is strictly wise. Because the true one is dangerous to hold. There are powers on this world that would take this mountain apart to reach what is in my head, and the moment either of you carries the shape of it you become worth taking apart as well.

”You are already carrying the seal. That is enough weight for two men.”

”Ashford, then,” Qin said, and did not argue, and she understood that he was never going to argue with her about anything again, and filed the problem for later, because it was going to be a real one.

He picked the small stone up off the desk and put it back on his belt.

”You will forgive me,” he said, ”if it takes me some while to stop looking at you.”

”Take as long as you want,” Jayde said. ”I’ve got until seventh bell.”
