Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 520: Chapter 515: Twelve Months

Location:Zhū’kethara — Kael’thoren Fortress

Date/Time:22 Voidmarch, 9942 AZI

Realm:Demon Realm

The awakening schedules were four hours behind, and Ren had been at them since before the light.

There was a discipline to it that he had built deliberately and had chosen not to examine. Numbers first, in the cold part of the morning, when the beast was quietest — allocations, rotations, which of the newly awakened could be trusted with a border and which could be trusted with a plow. Nine thousand souls this cycle. He had signed for every one of them personally since the schedule accelerated, because the acceleration had been his decision and he was not going to have another man’s hand on the consequence.

The pendant lay against his chest under the shirt, and it was warm, and had been warm every day for something over two years.

That was the arrangement he had made with himself. The pendant was warm. Warm meant alive. A man could work a full day on that, and he had worked something over three hundred of them.

The nights had been a different arrangement, and he had not made it with anybody.

They had their own shape by now, and the shape did not vary much. He would put the schedules down at some hour that did not have a name and lie in the dark, and the questions would come in the same order every time, which was the worst of it — that they had become a rotation, like the border postings, like the awakening lists. Was she hurt? Was there anybody near her who could set a bone? Was she eating, wherever it was, because in a year of letters she had never once mentioned food, and he had drawn conclusions from that. Was it cold? Was she sleeping, or was she doing what she did, which was to decide that sleep was a thing other people needed?

Was she frightened? That one he had learned to walk past quickly, because there was nothing in it for either of them.

He was a Demon King with eight million souls in his consciousness and a realm to raise out of sand, and he had spent a year of nights on a girl he had never seen, and he had never once said any part of it out loud, including to Kaelen, who knew anyway.

***

Seven weeks ago, Heiteng had opened a crystal without preamble and said four words.

She is out. Whole.

That was all of it. Ren had asked one question, and Heiteng had declined to answer it, in the specific way Heiteng declined things — not a refusal, a wall, and behind the wall the flat unbudgeable fact that he had given everything he was permitted to give. Ren had not pressed his sworn brother. He had thanked him and closed the crystal and stood in this room for some time.

Whole. He had turned the word over for seven weeks.

It should have finished the matter, and it had not, and he had spent a portion of every day since being irritated with himself about that. Heiteng did not exaggerate and did not soften and had never once in ten thousand years told him a comfortable thing in place of a true one. If Heiteng said whole, she was whole.

And still nothing had come. Seven weeks of nothing, on top of twelve months of nothing, and the pendant warm, and the page in the drawer.

It was in the second drawer on the left, folded once, and it had been there since the morning after the last thing came through: a diagram, burial depth and spacing, drawn in a hand that pressed harder on the downstrokes than anybody had ever taught it to. No greeting. No name at the foot. Twelve hundred and forty-seven marks in a grid and a note about a foot of soil.

Ren had buried them. All of them, across a realm, over ten months, and it had cost more than anybody, but Kaelen knew, and the answer had come back the same every quarter since.

Nothing. Three sites. The same three Kaelen had walked two years ago and reported cold, and nothing else, anywhere, in the whole of his realm.

The other thing that had stopped when she stopped was smaller, and he had not expected to feel it. Four crates a quarter had gone up the long way for a year — salt, dye-root, the fine grade of grinding sand they had no bed for on that side, and bolts of the plain gray cloth his weavers had never managed and would not admit they could not manage. Coming back the other way went whatever his margin could spare that quarter, which was always less than he wanted to send and invariably more than she would accept. It was not trade. It was too small to be trade. A prefect had asked him once what to call it in the rolls, and Ren had told him to call it a courtesy and stop asking.

That had been dead a year as well, and somewhere in the third or fourth month of it he had realized that he missed the crates, and that this was an absurd thing for a king to miss.

***

The beast was well, and that was its own species of unnerving.

For the better part of the year it had not been. It had slept twenty hours out of the day and more, in a silence Maelith examined three times and could not put a name to, with its reserves going steadily somewhere no healer in this realm could follow. It had turned away from him when it slept, which it had never once done in ten thousand years, and Ren had accepted Vaelith’s reading of that — after ten millennia on a war footing, rest does not look like stillness; it looks like processing. He had never for one hour of it believed a word.

Then, in Cinderfall, in the middle of a morning council, the wall the beast had built had simply dissolved.

Not a collapse. A release. The partition went, and the space behind it was open, and what was in the space was a Vor’kalth resting with a peace so complete that Vaelith had come out of the examination looking almost offended by it. More at peace than I have ever read it, in you or in anybody. Whatever it did, it needed to do.

Clean depletion. No tearing. No corruption. Nothing damaged anywhere in it.

It had spent itself down to the floor on purpose, at something it would not show him, and come back from it satisfied. That was the word, and in ten thousand years Ren had never once had cause to use it. Not quieted. Not calmed. Satisfied, the way a man is satisfied who has finished a thing he never told anybody he was building, and — a matter he had turned over a great deal — faintly and insufferably proud of it.

Four months of that now.

It slept facing him again. It surfaced when the border lords needed to see something behind his eyes, and went down again without argument. Maelith’s reserves ran full and clean, and by every measure the woman had, that half of him was in better condition than it had been in a thousand years.

And it wanted nothing at all.

That was the part he could not get comfortable with. The Vor’kalth was not a creature he kept. It was him — the half of him that had never learned to reason and had never needed to, and the one constant of the arrangement, across ten thousand years, was that it wanted. Ground. A fight. The thread. The one thing it had reached for every day since the thread went taut. A demon’s beast is the part that does not know how to stop wanting; that is the whole of what it is for. And this one had stopped, and lay in him quiet and full and immovable, and asked for nothing, and would not be drawn.

Ren had stopped asking it in Emberwane. There was nothing in it for either of them.

***

Kaelen came in at fourth bell without knocking, which he had done for longer than either of them had ever bothered to count and would go on doing, and stopped inside the door.

Ren looked up and knew before Kaelen spoke.

The stillness of him said it. Kaelen was precise about everything, including his own body, and the only time he ever went entirely still was when he had something in his hands and had not yet worked out how to set it down.

”The channel,” Kaelen said.

The beast came up out of four months of contentment like something breaching.

There was nothing measured in it at all. It was not the slow rise he had spent two years learning to hold — it came up through the floor of him and kept coming, and the ink was out of the well in a black arc across nine thousand names before Ren was aware that his hand had moved, and for three heartbeats the Vor’kalth was wholly and appallingly awake in a room built for a man.

Where.

Not a word. It did not have words. But it had asked one thing every day since the flare and then stopped asking in Cinderfall, and it had not asked since, and the force with which it asked now went through the Common Path hard enough that somewhere out in the wards a Kael’shira put a hand flat on a doorframe.

Ren held it. He held it the way he had held it a hundred times, and he was aware, distantly, over the top of the noise, that he was grinning like an idiot at a strategist who had said two words, and that his eyes had gone somewhere no king’s eyes had any business going in front of a subordinate, and that he did not care in the smallest degree.

It wanted something.

Four months of a contented animal that would not explain itself, and it had taken two words from Kaelen to put a direction back into it.

”How much?” he asked, and his voice was not entirely his own.

”Six sheets.”

Ren sat back down slowly.

Twelve months, and then six sheets.

”Bring it.”

Kaelen went. Ren stood up again, having not intended to, and found himself at the window with his hands behind his back, looking at a courtyard he had looked at for ten thousand years and could not have described.

Six sheets was not a note. Six sheets was not I am alive, do not send anyone. Six sheets was somebody sitting down with paper and working.

Which meant she was alive enough to work, and had something worth six sheets of it, and had chosen — after twelve months in which she had sent nothing at all — to spend the whole of the first contact on whatever that something was.

A year of rehearsing what he would do if a line came. Every version had been short. Not one of them had been six sheets, and he discovered, standing at the window with the whole lower half of himself turned toward the door Kaelen had gone through, that he had no idea what he wanted written on them.

***

It was proper paper. That registered before anything else, and he did not understand why it mattered until much later: a full sheet, six of them, when everything she had ever sent him had come on a scrap or the back of something.

The letter was read standing.

Da’Ren —

I owe you an apology, and I am going to make it a short one, because you are a busy man and because I do not think either of us has much use for the long kind.

I disappeared for a year without warning you. I knew when I went in that it would be about a year, and I did not send word, and there was no version of that which was not a choice. There was an accident on the way in. That is the honest word for it, and it is also the only word I can put on paper. The place I went is not somewhere I am able to describe to anyone who has not stood in it. Not will not. Am not able. You may take that as strangely as it deserves.

I have never had an ally I could not explain myself to before, and I find I do not much like being one. I am sorry. It will not happen again without a line going out first, even if the line is one word.

Three times he read it.

Second, and this is the part I would put first if I were being sensible about what actually matters: the crates stopped when I did. Four quarters of them, and then four quarters of nothing, and I have only this week worked out that I never arranged for anybody to carry on in my absence, which was careless of me at the wrong end.

So: what are you short of? Not what you would like — what you are short of. Salt, sand, seed, iron, the grinding grade, cloth, anything. Write the list down without editing it for pride, and I will fill what I can fill and tell you plainly what I cannot. There are four quarters owed, and I would rather clear them than be gracious about them.

Ren put the sheet down on the desk, quite carefully, and stood with one hand resting on it.

One year of crates, and one year of none.

Ren read it again, and then a third time, and could not get past it.

Twelve months underground in a place she was not able to describe. Whatever that had been — and he had a Demon King’s imagination and had been careful all year not to use it — she had come up out of it, and she had been out seven weeks, and the second thing she had put on paper was whether his people had salt.

Not the third. Not a line at the foot of the last sheet. The second thing, ahead of whatever the rest of the six sheets were for, and she had written it in the plain tone of a woman who considered it the item most likely to have been dropped.

Careless of me at the wrong end, she had written. About crates. About four quarters of salt and grinding sand and dye-root, in a hand that had been out of the ground for less than two months.

Ren put his palm flat on the sheet and stood there in his own study for a while, and did not examine the thing that was happening in his chest, because he had a fair idea what it was and no intention of naming it before breakfast.

She had been thinking about his margin. Somewhere in twelve months of whatever that place was, and in seven weeks of counting whatever had come out of it with her, part of her had been keeping a running account of a realm she had never seen and nine thousand people a cycle she would never meet, and had come out of it embarrassed about being late.

Something moved in the deep part of him and found nothing to do with itself, and settled, and stayed close.

+++

The third sheet was the war.

Third. My people have finished the survey of this continent. The whole of it. Eighty-nine sites, located and confirmed, and I will give you the method further down because you are going to want to check it against your own ground.

Eighty-nine active. One of them is no longer there.

We opened it on the thirteenth of this month and killed every worm inside it, and the field is dead ground and will stay dead ground, and there is nothing left in it to grow back. I am not going to pretend that was cheap. It was not, and I am not going to write down what it cost either, because that also is not a thing I can put on paper, and because the woman it cost it to would be extremely annoyed with me.

Eighty-eight left. Three of those are close enough to the surface that the ground is opening on its own, and I am counting the time in months rather than years.

I am moving the schedule up. All of it. Whatever I had planned for the next decade is being compressed into whatever I can build, and the reason for that is on the fourth sheet.

Ren stopped reading and looked at the wall for a while.

One of them is no longer there.

Until he read it he had not known what he had been braced for. Some part of him had been holding out a hand for the other version of this letter — the one where a young woman came out of a hole in the ground, and stood in a courtyard full of the dead, and sat down.

That was the thing. That was the thing he had been failing to say to himself for seven weeks, and it arrived now with the force of every hour he had spent not saying it.

She had come out of that place and gone straight back to work. Seven weeks. She had come out of a year underground, whole by Heiteng’s word and by nobody else’s, and she had counted her dead and picked up the next problem and ridden four hundred miles into the cold to measure it.

Ren knew exactly what that was, because he had been doing it for ten thousand years, and he knew precisely what it cost, and the difference between them was that when he started he had already been ancient.

She was twenty. Twenty-one, perhaps. He had never seen her face, and he was fairly certain of that number, and he had turned it over more than he cared to admit.

Twenty-one years old, and eighty-eight of those things under her feet, and one weapon that he was now nearly certain was a single living person, and a schedule she was compressing because the ground would not wait for her.

Every instinct he had — the king’s, the beast’s, the older thing underneath both that had nothing to do with either — wanted to reach across a realm boundary and take the whole weight of it off her and put it on his own back, where there was already a great deal and where there was, he judged, room.

And he could not. Not one ounce of it. He had no ground on that side, no standing, no army she would accept, and — he made himself finish the thought, because a man who did not finish his thoughts made poor decisions. No invitation.

What he had was a boundary between them and a dry pen.

Ren discovered that his jaw had set, and made it stop.

***

The fourth and fifth sheets were the method, and they were beautiful, and he read them the way he had once read siege manuals.

Two ways to tell an occupied field from an empty one. The first was the drain — the slackness that comes on approach, how far out it starts, and the fact that it fell away in a curve, and that a curve read from one end will tell you the other. The second was heat. Two-tenths of a degree over a patch the size of a stockyard, holding steady against the sun, pushed up through a hundred meters of rock by a granary’s worth of living animal.

Then the numbers, laid out without a wasted word. Three fields, measured on the ground. Four hundred and twenty paces, four hundred and eighty, six hundred and ninety, and a drain radius against each. A count — three thousand two hundred — and beside it, smaller: measured, not estimated. First count anyone has taken. Depth of throat. The angle. The width of the second turn.

And most of the way down the fifth sheet, a line that put a hand on the back of his neck.

A field they have left looks exactly like a field they are in. Same color, same nothing growing, same silence. From horseback, there is no difference whatsoever. The only two things that separate them are the gradient and the heat, and until this month nobody on Doha had ever taken either.

Da’Ren, your three are sand. Mine are gray. I do not know what that means, and I am not going to guess in a letter. But you have had a grid in the ground for ten months, and it has heard nothing, and I want you to consider that the nothing may be the finding.

He sat down.

His realm had three cold circles in it and a year of listening posts that had heard nothing at all, and he had spent the whole of that year quietly pleased about it.

***

The sixth sheet was the questions, and there were only six of them, and every one was about ground.

Wells that went bad, and when. Roads moved, and when. Ground that stopped paying its assessment, and when it stopped, and whether anybody had troubled to describe why. Any complaint from any farmer, in any century, about sand where sand had not been. Anything with a date on it within reach of the three.

I am not asking for the interesting half of your archive. I want the boring half. Tax rolls and drainage disputes and a prefect’s bad temper about a road. Somewhere in ten thousand years of that there is a man complaining about his well, and the date on his complaint is worth more to me than every prophecy on this world.

I know what I am asking for. Nobody on any world indexes tax rolls by ground — they index them by who owed what to whom, which means there is no shortcut and somebody has to read the lot. Tell me what it costs in hands and months, and I will pay it.

Ren sat down slowly and read the six questions again, and then a third time, and understood that he had been handed the one thing he had spent the last hour deciding he did not have.

Not an army. Not ground. Not a place to stand beside her. A cellar under the east tower, four floors of it, and a strategist who had never in his life understood the word approximately.

She had asked him for the only help in this realm he was actually able to give, and she had asked for it as though it were a favor.

And then, at the foot of the sheet, in a hand that had not pressed as hard:

The channel is the only thing either of us has that nobody can open, intercept, or read on the way. I would like it to stay that way, and I would like it used. Not only for ground. If something on your side needs a second opinion at four in the morning, send it. It does not have to be worth six sheets.

Jayde

Ren looked at the name for a long time.

A year of diagrams passed between two people who had never seen one another’s faces, and then a year of nothing, and a name given to him once through a flare in a thread and never once written at the bottom of anything.

He put his thumb against the paper beside it, not quite touching, and became aware that the beast had come all the way up and was simply there — not pushing, not demanding, entirely occupying him, and pointed. Unmistakably pointed, down through three passages and a realm boundary, at a plateau it had never seen.

Four months satisfied, and now it had a bearing.

Ren sat in his own study with six sheets of proper paper in front of him and found that the thing he had never put on a scale was that knowing she was alive and holding it in her own hand were not the same species of fact at all. He had carried the difference for twelve months. Heiteng’s four words had shifted perhaps an ounce of it.

Then he did the arithmetic, because he was who he was.

One thousand four hundred and three, he thought. She had not written that number, and she had not needed to; the third sheet had said my dead in a way that had a figure behind it.

Ren did the sum twice. The first time it was about her, and the second time he made it be about the ones who had not come out, because a man in his position did not get to do those in the wrong order, and because she would be doing them in that order right now, four hundred miles west of anywhere, in the cold.

***

”There will be an answer,” Kaelen said from the door. It was not a question.

”Tonight.”

”How long do you want the archive?”

”How long will it take?”

”Honestly? Four months with everybody I can spare, and I will not be able to spare everybody.” Kaelen came properly into the room at last. ”Or three weeks, if you tell me what a dead field looks like from the outside, so that I am not reading ten thousand years of complaints about bad ground and guessing which bad ground she means.”

Ren turned the fourth sheet round and pushed it across the desk.

Kaelen read it standing, the way Ren had.

”Gray,” he said eventually. ”Fine gray, like fired clay. Nothing grows. Nothing rots — she has underlined that.” He looked up. ”That is not what our three look like.”

”No.”

”Ours are sand.”

”And I have crossed one of them, and Heiteng has crossed that country eleven times, and neither of us ever felt a thing beneath it.”

Kaelen set the sheet down with the particular care of a man putting away something he intended to think about for a season.

”Then either they were never the same,” he said, ”or ours finished.”

”Yes.”

”And if ours finished — something finished them, or they finished themselves, or they left.”

”Yes.”

”You have already been at the third one.”

”Since the fifth sheet.” Ren turned his hand over on the desk. ”There are three passages off this realm. My house has held two of them for ten thousand years, and I could not tell you what has gone down either in soil, in grain, in ballast, or in the boots of a man walking home. Nobody has ever had cause to ask.”

”And the Lower Realm has eighty-nine.”

”The Lower Realm has eighty-nine from one pair,” Ren said, ”which means the animal travels, and travels well, and has spent ten millennia getting good at precisely the thing I have never once watched for.”

Kaelen’s pale silver eyes came up.

”Two of those three possibilities are extremely good news for the Lower Realm.”

”And one of them is good news for nobody,” Ren said, ”and there is not a single listening post between this realm and the Mid.”

***

Ren wrote it that evening, and it took considerably longer than six sheets had any right to take.

It said what Kaelen had walked, all three sites, with dates. It said the posts had been in the ground for ten months and had produced a count of three and nothing else, and that he had not understood until this morning that the nothing was the finding. It described the desert margin the way a farmer would, because a farmer’s description was the only sort he had.

It said the archive would take four months and would be done, and that she would not be paying for it, and it said that in a manner that did not invite discussion.

The list took him longer than any of it. He wrote it without editing for pride, because she had asked him not to, and he found the request harder to honor than anything else in six sheets: salt, iron, the grinding grade, seed for the eastern margin. Nine thousand newly awakened this cycle and no coats for any of them. He put the cloth needed for the coats down.

At the end, after a long while with a dry pen, he wrote:

Heiteng told me seven weeks ago that you were out and whole. I have been grateful to him since, and it did nothing whatever for me until I saw your hand on a page, and I am too old to pretend otherwise.

Then he read it.

He read it the way he would have read it if a spymaster had put it on the desk in front of him — cold, from the outside, looking for what the document gave away about the man who wrote it. And it gave away a great deal. It gave away most of a year.

He set the pen down.

In a year of drawings, she had never written him one line that was not about work. Not out of coldness; he was fairly certain she had never noticed she was doing it. She had signed a survey report and apologized about salt and offered him the channel at four in the morning, and there was not a word anywhere in six sheets that asked him for anything of himself.

She had given him nothing to answer, and she was twenty-one years old with eighty-eight of those things under her feet, and a man does not hand somebody a weight they have not asked to carry and then stand there watching them decide what to do with it.

She had enough.

Ren drew a line through it, and then a second line, until the words underneath could not be read at all.

Then he wrote it again, and it took three attempts, and the third one was cool enough to send.

Heiteng told me seven weeks ago that you were out. I am glad of it.

Your six sheets are the most useful thing that has crossed into this realm in a year, and I do not say that about paper. Whatever the accident was, I am not asking, and you do not owe me the year.

You came out of that place and went back to work in under two months. I know exactly what that is, because I have been doing it for ten thousand years. I am not going to tell you to stop. I am going to tell you that the load you are carrying is one this realm was built to distribute across a hundred kings, that I have some experience of carrying it alone, and that it is not an experience I would recommend to anybody.

Send me the next thing you need before you have finished deciding whether you need it.

Ren

Then, because the alternative was to sit there editing until it said nothing at all, he folded the sheets and sealed them and gave them to Kaelen, and went back to the awakening schedules.

They were still four hours behind. He worked until the small hours and made up two of them.

The pendant stayed warm against his chest, and somewhere in the middle of all of it he understood that he had stopped putting his hand over it every hour, and could not say when, and that underneath the desk and the ink and the nine thousand names the beast lay with its head up and its eyes open, satisfied about one thing it had never explained and, for the first time since Cinderfall, wanting another.
