Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 504: Chapter 499: The Wall

Location:Dragon estate — Operations Room

Date/Time:5 Frostforge, 9942 AZI

Realm:Lower Realm, Doha

The map covered the entire eastern wall.

Not a map the way Jayde understood maps — not the tactical projections she had built underground, the formation-lit terrain models, the flat brutal geography of a commander working with whatever she had. This was a web. Pins and thread in four colors spreading across the eastern Lower Realm like the root system of something alive, and every pin was a village, and every thread was a connection, and the whole of it had grown for a year without one person outside this house knowing it existed.

Blue for courier routes. Red for supply. Green for trade. Yellow for the arrays.

A hundred and twenty-seven pins. Thirty-four arrays. Eighteen hubs. Eleven medical stations. Seventy-one civilian operatives, and forty-seven more of Xinglong’s on separate funding.

Jayde stood in front of it and did not speak for a long time.

”You built this,” she said.

”I built the structure,” Yinxin said. ”Isha built the arrays. Xinglong built the human network. Heiteng secured the caches. The quintet flew the high-altitude relays up themselves, in dragon form, at night, in conditions I would prefer not to describe in detail. Green produced the medical supplies. Eden wrote the protocol book before she went in.” She paused. ”Eleven villages have functioning triage that had no healer at all.”

”You built this.”

”We built it. While you were under a mountain.” The golden eyes came around. ”You asked me to build something the Sovereign could stand on when she came back. You did not say what it should look like. You trusted me to decide.”

”And you decided on an empire.”

”I decided on an infrastructure. The empire is yours to declare or not to. What is on that wall is roads and medicine and communication, and a hundred and twenty-seven villages that trust a network they do not understand, because it has been useful to them and has never once asked them for anything.” She looked at the wall. ”Loyalty comes afterward. It is earned by being reliable. Reliability is the only foundation I know how to build on.”

***

The room filled up over the next hour.

Xinglong came in and folded himself into the corner nearest the door, which was where he always went. Heiteng arrived after him and sat on the floor with his back against the wall, because the estate owned no chair that had ever survived him. Eden brought her datapad. White took the doorframe. Green took the seat closest to the brazier and did not pretend to be there for the strategy.

Isha’s light hung above the table. Canirr and Takara lay in the courtyard with the door open. Reiko put himself across Jayde’s feet and stayed there.

Ashborn’s head occupied most of the courtyard doorway, sensory pits dimmed, listening to a room it could not enter.

”Report,” Jayde said. ”All of it. Then we plan.”

***

Xinglong went first, because Xinglong’s report was the shortest.

”Forty-seven operatives. Ex-caravan guards, retired cultivators, disgraced sect fighters — people with a reason to want a wage and no reason to want questions. Three-month rotation, so no face repeats on any route. They believe they work for a mercenary company. They do. The company is real; it takes real contracts, and it turns a profit.” He shrugged one shoulder. ”None of them know a dragon exists anywhere in the structure.”

”Losses?”

”Four. Two to bandits on the western spur, one to a river crossing, one who drank himself off a roof in Emberwane.” The dark eyes were level. ”I have their names. I will give them to you separately, because you will want them and nobody else in this room will.”

”Yes,” Jayde said. ”I will.”

Heiteng’s report was shorter still.

”Three caches. I move between them without a pattern. Nothing has been touched.” He turned the bowl in his hands. ”That is the whole of it, and it is not why I am sitting on this floor.”

”Then we are here for the other thing.”

”The other thing is that we have hidden a Silver Queen for a year,” Heiteng said, ”and we cannot hide her for a second one.”

The room went quiet.

Jayde waited.

”Dragon fertility has been collapsing since the last true queen died. One egg in fifty. One hatchling in ten. Every dragon alive believes it is the Sundering’s doing, because that is what the elders decided everyone would believe.” The mercury-silver eyes had not moved off her. ”It is not the Sundering. There is no queen. That is the entire cause, and the elders have known it for a very long time, and they chose the hierarchy over the species.”

”And when they find out she’s alive?”

”Then everything they built stops being legitimate in the same hour.” Heiteng drank. ”A Silver Queen restores fertility. She restores the Common Path. Every rank and claim in dragon society descends from a settlement made in her absence, and her existence voids all of it. There will be dragons who kneel and dragons who come to kill her, and the ones who come to kill her will not be doing it because they are evil. They will be doing it because they cannot survive her being real.”

”How long do we have?”

”The wyrmlings,” Xinglong said from the corner. ”That is your clock. Three of them, and they are three years old, and they are growing. Pendants hide an aura. They do not hide a shape. When they stop being able to pass for children, we are finished hiding, and that is not a decision anyone in this room gets to make.”

”Five years,” Heiteng said. ”Perhaps seven. I would plan for five.”

Yinxin had not said anything at all.

”Noted,” Jayde said. ”It goes on the board.”

***

”Worms,” she said. ”Give me the numbers.”

Eighty-nine nests, Canirr said from the courtyard. Eight hundred and forty-seven sensors. The grid is complete — there is no populated territory in this realm we are not reading. Forty-one in my sector, eleven in Suki’s, thirty-seven in Prota’s.

A pause.

Three of mine are approaching surface-breach threshold. When I filed that report, it read eighteen months. It is nearer fifteen now. All three are eastern. All three sit inside your network.

”What happens if one surfaces near a village?”

The village stops existing, Canirr said. Not quickly.

Jayde looked at the map for a while.

”Then we do the part nobody has done,” she said. ”Everyone in this room has been carrying half of it. Put the whole thing on the table.”

Yinxin set down her cup.

”There is one weapon on this world that kills them,” she said. ”It is a purification weave that came from Ala, and it works because it does not attack the worms. It severs what they have hooked into Doha. Nothing else touches them. They carry psionic shields that turn aside essence attacks, and physical weapons are useless, and Inferno, Torrent, Terracore and Galebreath have all been tried by people considerably older than anyone in this room.”

”So we have one weapon,” Heiteng said.

”We have one weapon, and I am the only living thing that can hold it.” Yinxin’s voice did not change at all. ”Thirty minutes to cast for a small colony. Forty for a large one. Absolute concentration from the first syllable to the last. If it is interrupted at any point, the backlash does not fail politely. It kills me.”

”And during those forty minutes,” Isha said, ”she cannot defend herself in any way whatsoever.”

”Which is why I go,” Jayde said.

”Which is why she goes.” Yinxin looked around the room. ”I do the killing. Jayde stands between me and eight thousand things screaming into her skull, for forty minutes, without moving, because if she breaks I die and the colony lives. That is the entire tactical doctrine. It has not changed since the glade, and it is not going to.”

Nobody said anything for a moment.

”Tell them the rest,” Eden said quietly.

Jayde did not particularly want to. She said it anyway.

”The last one nearly finished me. Twelve divine-grade ward stones. An Earth Dragon Ward. The earth spirits themselves lending strength. Reiko merging his own essence into my meridians when the drain started.” She kept her eyes on the map. ”The worms fed on their own dead and doubled. Then they stopped hammering and started drinking, and they took my cultivation out of me in real time — Flamewrought down through Sparkforged down to Ashborn, in under a minute, while my meridians tore. I finished that fight on the ground bleeding out of my nose and ears with sixty-eight percent meridian integrity.”

”And that,” Isha said, ”was one nest.”

”That was one nest.”

”There are eighty-nine.”

***

”That is the worst version of it,” Yinxin said, ”and it is the version she always gives, so I will give the other one.”

She turned from the wall.

”When we fought that colony, she was fifteen years old and Peak Flamewrought, and I had spent the previous century in hiding and had cast that weave exactly never. I could not hold the spell at full strength on my own reserves. I was drawing phoenix fire through the bond and running at three times what I actually had, which is why my last blast was barely strong enough to finish it.” The golden eyes were flat and factual. ”We went into that glade as two children with borrowed power and no experience, and we won by a margin so thin that I have not enjoyed a single day of remembering it.”

”And now?” Heiteng said.

”Now I am a Silver Dragon Queen who came out of that fight transformed, has cultivated freely for four years since, and can hold the weave on what is mine.” A pause. ”I would not need to reach into her at all. Which means every scrap of what she has stays where it belongs — in front of me.”

”Her cultivation is a year idle,” Xinglong said.

”Her cultivation is not what they attack,” Eden said it without looking up. ”They attack mental barriers. That is not a tier; it is a discipline, and it does not atrophy from disuse — it atrophies from comfort.” She finally raised her head. ”She has not had a comfortable day in a year. She held a line for sixty days with no essence at all and made decisions the entire time under noise designed to break people. Whatever those barriers were at fifteen, they are not that now. I watched them get built.”

And the shadowbeast, Canirr said from the courtyard. He fed his essence into her meridians in that glade as an infant. He is not an infant.

Reiko’s rune brightened one degree against Jayde’s ankle.

[I am considerably larger now,] he said. [I would like that recorded as well.]

There is also the arithmetic of the nests themselves, Canirr went on. The sensors read colony mass, not only position. The glade colony ran somewhere above ten thousand. Of the eighty-nine, most read well under that. Twenty-odd sit beneath two thousand. Small enough that your thirty-minute cast is the number, not the forty.

”And the large ones?”

Are the three that are breaching. A pause. A colony pushes for the surface because it has outgrown the ground it is in. The urgent ones are urgent precisely because they are the biggest.

”Of course they are,” Jayde said.

”So the first three are the hardest three,” Isha said, ”and after that it becomes genuinely easier.”

”After that it becomes survivable,” Yinxin said. ”I am not going to let this room talk itself into easy. But we are not those two children in that glade, and I would rather everybody stopped planning as though we were.”

Jayde looked at her for a moment.

”Noted,” she said. ”Say it again if I forget.”

”I intend to say it approximately weekly.”

***

”So do the arithmetic in front of everybody,” Jayde said, ”and then we will all stop pretending there is an easy version.”

”Forty minutes of casting,” Yinxin said. ”Travel between nests, in terrain the Panthera have described in detail and which is not kind. Recovery afterward, for both of us, which in her case last time was measured in weeks and not days.” She did the sum without any apparent effort. ”One nest a fortnight is optimistic. Eighty-nine nests is four years. Nothing goes wrong for four years, which is not a thing that has ever happened.”

And that is only this realm, Canirr said. The grid covers the Lower Realm and nothing else. The Mid Realm has never been surveyed by anyone.

”The Upper Realm has,” Heiteng said.

Everyone looked at him.

”Ren’s forces found feeding sites at the desert’s edge. Confirmed, not suspected.” The mercury-silver eyes did not move off the map. ”Three clusters, which his strategist reads as three separate placement events rather than one. Which means somebody carried breeding pairs up out of this realm, through the passages, on three occasions, and knew how to handle them well enough to do it.”

”Someone with passage access,” Yinxin said.

”Someone with passage access and a reason.” Heiteng turned the bowl slowly in his hands. ”That desert used to be their grain belt. It fed hundreds of millions. For ten thousand years the demons have watched their world turn to sand and blamed their own failing bloodlines for it — and it was never them. It was the things in the ground underneath, put there on purpose.”

The brazier settled into its own ash.

”So it was never confined to one tier,” Eden said.

”It was never meant to be,” Heiteng said. ”It was put here because here is where nobody was looking, and then it was carried to where it would do the most damage.”

”There is a clock,” Isha said, ”and it is not the one this room has been counting. I would like it stated properly, because I have been carrying it by myself since before Jayde could read.”

He brought the light down over the table.

”You have all been treating the Nematomorpha as a slow poison. A thing that drains a world because draining is what such things do.” The light held very steady. ”It is not a poison. It is a siege engine. It has been aimed at one target for nine thousand nine hundred years, and the target is Ala.”

Nobody moved.

”They do not feed on the ground. They feed on the world spirit through the ground. Every year they take, and she has that much less, and it has been slow enough that this world has called it drought and thin harvests and weakening cultivation and the natural tiredness of an age.” A pause. ”It is none of those. It is her, going quiet.”

”How quiet?” Jayde said.

”That is the entire design. Not death — nobody kills a world spirit with worms. Sleep. Drain her deeply enough for long enough, and she does not merely weaken. She goes under. And she stays under far longer than she ever would have.”

Heiteng set the bowl down on the flagstone.

”They are putting her to sleep before they arrive.”

”They put her under nine thousand nine hundred years ago, and they have held her there ever since,” Isha said. ”The invasion is not the beginning of the operation. It is the end of it. Everything since the last war has been preparation, and the preparation is very nearly complete, and in under seventy years they intend to walk into a world whose defender cannot wake up.”

***

”Which changes what your four years are for,” Isha said.

He turned the light toward Jayde.

”You have been thinking of clearance as rescue. Villages saved. Ground cleaned. It is not that. It is the removal of a weight.”

”She recovers,” Yinxin said slowly.

”She recovers. She does not recover quickly. Nine thousand nine hundred years of drain does not come back in a season — and it does not begin to come back at all while a single nest is still feeding.” The light did not waver. ”So the number that matters is not eighty-nine. It is how many years stand between the day the last nest dies and the day the barrier breaks. That is her recovery window. Every month spent clearing is a month she does not get.”

The room was very quiet.

”Seventy years,” Jayde said. ”Four to clear, if nothing goes wrong.”

”Then sixty-six years of recovery, which may be sufficient. I will not pretend to know how much she needs; nobody has ever measured a world spirit coming back from this, because no world spirit has ever been taken this far down and survived it.” A pause. ”But take ten years to clear instead of four, and you have taken six years off a goddess who will be standing between this realm and an army.”

”And when it breaks,” Heiteng said, ”it stays broken. The barrier does not close politely behind them. Last time it was down the better part of a century, and the gateways between the realms take years to reopen after that. Whatever this world has standing on the day the gate opens is what it has for the next hundred years. Nothing comes down to help us. Nothing goes up.”

”So the sequence is fixed,” Yinxin said. ”Nests first. Everything else second.”

”Nests first,” Isha agreed. ”Not because the villages do not matter. Because she is the only defense this world has that nobody has to build.”

***

”And there is the part after,” Isha said. ”They were placed here — a breeding pair, buried deep, during the last invasion. A weapon designed to kill a world slowly enough that nobody would ever be able to say which war had done it. Nine thousand nine hundred years of breeding, from two.

”When the Zartonesh come back, they will harvest what worked. Breeding pairs. Refinements. And then they will use it on the next world, and the one after, without ever having to land an army on any of them.”

The brazier cracked and spat.

”So it is not a Lower Realm problem,” Heiteng said.

”It has never been a Lower Realm problem. The Luminari believed they had put this species out of existence eons ago, and they were very nearly correct.” The light steadied. ”What the Zartonesh buried in that crust was the last breeding pair left anywhere. Two. Everything on this world since has been arithmetic — and it is the only stock of them in existence, which is precisely why they will come back for what grew out of it.”

***

”Then the constraint is Yinxin,” Jayde said, ”and I want to be honest about that, because it is the worst thing on this wall and it is worse than the eighty-nine.”

Yinxin inclined her head very slightly. She had known it longer than anyone.

”I can train protectors,” Jayde said. ”Maybe. Slowly. With enormous cost. There is nobody I can train into a second caster. There is one weave and one throat that can sing it, and every single one of those eighty-nine nests requires her to stand in the open for forty minutes and be absolutely still.”

”The wyrmlings,” Green said.

The room went very quiet.

”They are silver,” Green went on, without any pleasure in it. ”It is their inheritance too. Ala’s weave is in the line, and Yinxin can teach it, and eventually it will not only be her.”

”They are three,” Yinxin said.

”Yes.”

”They are three, Green.”

”I know exactly how old they are, and I like saying this no better than you like hearing it.” Green’s fractured eyes did not move. ”I am not proposing anything. I am telling this room that the only succession that exists for the one weapon on this world is currently asleep upstairs, and that the reason we protect that woman above every other consideration is that if she dies before they are grown, Doha has no way to kill worms at all.”

Yinxin looked at the fire for a long moment.

”Correct,” she said.

***

”Then we change what protection is,” Eden said.

Everyone looked at her.

”You have been describing this the whole time as a person problem. Who can stand in front of her. Who can take forty minutes of that.” She turned the datapad face down. ”That is a hardware problem, and you are solving it with a body.”

”Go on.”

”Psionic assault is force. It has a mechanism, and a mechanism has a countermeasure, and I do not need to understand your essence theory to build against it — I need to characterize the waveform.” Eden had come off the doorframe. ”Your worms attack minds. Fine. The Federation spent four hundred years building against things that attack minds, because half of what came through a dimensional tear did exactly that, and every single answer we found was equipment. Not a talented person. Equipment. Filters, dampeners, resonance cancellation, hardened relay lattices.”

”You are proposing to build a psionic shield,” Isha said, slowly.

”I am proposing to build a field. Something you plant in a ring around a caster, the way you plant ward stones, that drops the incoming pressure by a measurable fraction before it ever reaches a mind.” Eden looked at Jayde. ”I am not going to tell you it makes it safe. I am telling you that if I cut what reaches you by half, then Yinxin’s forty minutes stops being survivable-once and starts being repeatable. And repeatable is the only thing that gets you to eighty-nine.”

”What do you need?”

”A live nest to characterize, which I am not looking forward to. The fabricator. And Isha, because I can build the housing and I cannot build the formation interface, and this only works if the two systems talk to each other.”

”That,” Isha said, ”is the first sentence anybody has said in this room that I have enjoyed.”

”There is one more thing,” Jayde said. ”The ward stones.”

Takara’s head came up in the courtyard doorway.

”Twelve stones. Pavilion crystal, divine-grade, cut to isolate. They kept the worms in and the psionic bleed contained, and they worked exactly as designed.” She looked at the doorway. ”They also locked out the one person outside the ring who was trying to get to me, because nobody had thought to test whether an ally could cross. He hit that boundary at a full sprint, and it threw him back like a wall.”

”It was a rookie error,” Takara said flatly. ”Mine. I have had five years to enjoy it.”

”It was my formation,” Jayde said. ”The next set is keyed. Anything wearing my token walks through it, in either direction, and I would like that tested by somebody running at it before we ever use them in the field again.”

***

”One more thing on the worms, and then we move,” Jayde said. ”Yinxin teaches.”

Yinxin’s head came up.

”Not now. Not for years, and not until you decide they are ready, and I will not argue with you about when that is.” Jayde put her hand on the eastern provinces. ”But the weave goes into the next generation, because a weapon with one wielder is not a weapon. It is a hostage. And I am not spending the next forty years protecting you because we were all too squeamish to say this out loud in a warm room.”

Yinxin looked at her for a long moment.

”I will begin the theory,” she said. ”Only the theory. They will not cast a syllable of it until they are grown.”

”That’s all I’m asking.”

***

Outside, the light had gone off the courtyard wall entirely.

Green got up and refilled the brazier without being asked, and for a while nobody said anything at all. Eighty-nine nests. One throat that could sing the weave. Four years if nothing went wrong, and nothing had ever not gone wrong.

Jayde stood in front of a map of a realm she had been out of for a year and let the arithmetic sit where everyone could see it.

Then she turned around.

”That’s the ground,” she said. ”Now the part I actually called you here for.”
