Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 513: Chapter 508: The Widow’s Field

Location:Emberholt Province — the dead ground above Nest Eleven

Date/Time:12 Voidmarch, 9942 AZI — late morning

Realm:Lower Realm

She felt it two hours before she saw it.

It arrived the same as altitude — no pain, nothing to point at, only a slackness through the circulation, as though the essence in her channels had been diluted with something that was not quite water. She said nothing for the first hour, because she wanted to know how far out the others would pick it up.

There were three of them on that road and three that were not people. Eden got it at ninety minutes and began flexing her hands without knowing she was doing it, with Zhi coiled across her saddlebow. Yinxin had almost certainly had it from the river and had not mentioned it, which was Yinxin. Reiko was somewhere off in the barley at about the size of a farm dog, which was the size he used when there were roads. Takara rode in her coat at the size of a kitten, which he had done on every road for four years and complained about on every one of them, and which worked because nobody who has already decided a thing is a cat ever looks at it twice.

The road came over a shoulder of low hill and the land opened into terraced barley, brown and stubbled under Voidmarch frost, and in the middle of it there was a circle where the world had stopped.

Four hundred paces across, near enough. The soil inside it was gray — not the gray of ash or poor clay but a fine mineral gray, dry-looking, the color of something fired. Nothing grew on it.

That was the first thing anybody would say about it. It was the least of what was wrong.

Eden got to the second thing first, because Eden looked at the ground the same way she looked at a patient.

”Why is the wood still there?”

A fallen tree lay across the northern arc. The half of it on living ground had done what fallen trees do — collapsed into itself, dark, half returned. The half lying inside the gray was intact. Bark on. Branches on. It had come down on some windy night before anybody currently breathing had been born, and it had simply stayed.

”Because nothing rots in there,” Jayde said. ”The decomposers are gone too. Whatever takes a body apart takes it apart because it is alive, and there is nothing alive in that circle at all.”

Behind her, Reiko had stopped in the stubble and said nothing whatsoever, which he did perhaps twice a year.

***

The holding sat a little under a mile off — thirty-odd houses under a common roofline, a threshing floor, a shrine, and a great many people standing in the lane pretending not to look at three strangers who had come a long way to look at bad ground.

The headman was about sixty and came out to meet them alone, which took a kind of courage Jayde had learned to recognize and had stopped being able to watch comfortably.

”We pay our levy,” he said, before anybody had spoken.

”We’re not here for the levy.”

He looked at her, and then at the horses, and then at gear that had no business on a provincial road in Voidmarch, and did the arithmetic men like him had been doing on this continent for ten thousand years.

”Then what are you here for?”

”The field. What do you call it?”

”The Widow’s Field.”

”Why?”

”Because that is what it is called.” He said it as a man says a thing he has said his whole life. ”My grandmother called it that. Her grandmother did. There is a story that a woman lost a husband in it, and another that she lost seven, and a third about a bell.” He shrugged, and it was not a careless shrug. ”We plough around it. Everybody has always ploughed around it.”

”Has anybody ever gone in?”

”Children. On a dare, once a generation. Nothing happens to them — they come out tired, and they sleep two days, and they are fine.” He was watching her closely now. ”That is all it has ever done. It is bad ground; it takes nothing from us, and we leave it alone. I would like to know what three people want with bad ground, because in my experience nobody has ever come this far to give anybody anything.”

Reiko’s voice came in against her ribs, dry and unimpressed.

[He is not wrong.]

”There’s something under it,” Jayde said. ”I’m going to take it out. And I want your people off this ground before first light.”

She watched him decide not to ask what.

”How far off?”

”Past the mill and over the second rise. Take the animals, take everything that will walk, and do not come back for anything until one of us walks up that road and tells you it is finished.”

”How long?”

”A day. Possibly two.”

”And if nobody comes?”

He asked it flatly, an old man in a lane with thirty houses behind him, and she made herself give him the flat answer back, because he had earned it by asking.

”Then keep walking,” Jayde said. ”Don’t come back for the grain.”

He looked at her for a while. Then he turned to go, and stopped.

”How long has it been bad ground?” she said.

”Always. The shrine is older than the village, and it is sited to face away from it. That is the oldest thing anybody here can tell you.” He did not look back. ”Whoever set that stone already knew. I have paid a levy every year of my life to men who never once told me the truth about anything, and I would like it noted that I noticed.”

***

Eden had the survey stakes out before anybody had finished unloading, and by second bell she and Zhi had walked the rim twice.

Jayde watched them come back across the stubble — the small dark-haired woman with the slate, and the winged serpent moving low beside her with its scales running the deep still blue that meant nothing was wrong anywhere. Zhi had gone chalk white for the first quarter-hour on the rim and had then, apparently, decided the field was boring.

”Cool-dim all the way round the edge,” Eden said. ”Warm-bright at the centre, climbing steadily from about eighty paces in. No steps in it, no edges. Whatever’s down there is one thing, not a scatter of things.”

”Depth?”

”Zhi doesn’t do depth. Zhi does warmer.” Eden dropped onto a stone and pulled her glove off with her teeth. ”But I can give you a radius off the drain gradient, which is the first time anybody has ever had cause to measure one. The slack starts two hours out at a walk. The dead ground itself is four hundred and twenty paces at the widest.”

Jayde did not answer.

”That is a real number,” Eden said. ”I would like it to be doing something.”

”Say the two hours again.”

”Two hours at a walk.” Eden’s head came up slowly. ”Why?”

”Because when I was fifteen I rode into the slack most of a day out from the last one.” Her own voice sounded a long way off. ”Most of a day, Eden. And when we came over the ridge above it, I could not see the far side of the field.”

Zhi lifted its head off the stubble and put it down again.

”Not the story,” Eden said. ”The measurements.”

”I don’t have measurements. I was fifteen, and I was not taking any.” Jayde made herself do it anyway. ”The drain came up on us before noon, and we did not reach the rim until the next afternoon. The field was — ” she stopped, and made it honest ” — I don’t know. Miles. There was a road going into it that stopped.”

Eden had gone entirely still except for the hand holding the pen.

”Then they aren’t the same size.”

”No.”

”Jayde.” She looked up. ”You have eighty-nine sensor positions, and you have been calling that eighty-nine nests, and every single person in that operations room has been doing the same arithmetic in their head — this many nests, this many forty-minute engagements, this many of whatever the first one cost you. And it’s wrong. You don’t have eighty-nine of anything. You have eighty-nine locations. This one is four hundred paces across. That one had a road going into it that simply stopped.”

”That’s the good news.”

”That’s half the good news, and you have already got to the other half, or you would not have gone that color.”

She had. She had got there while Eden was still writing, and had been standing in a frozen barley field turning it over and hating it.

”If this one is small,” Jayde said, ”then the one that nearly killed us at fifteen wasn’t the worst of them. It was just the one nearest a road.”

Nobody said anything for a while. Out in the middle of four hundred and twenty paces of gray, nothing moved, because nothing there had moved in ninety-nine centuries.

”Why is this one eleven?” Jayde said.

”Because it was the eleventh the grid confirmed. Xinglong’s people worked outward from the estate and wrote them down in the order they found them.” Eden was already turning to a clean face of the slate. ”That is the entire meaning of the number, and until an hour ago nobody thought it needed to mean anything else, because we all assumed we were counting identical objects.”

”And now?”

”Now the register is wrong in a way that will kill somebody.” She ruled a line down the slate with her thumbnail. ”Every one of those eighty-nine entries needs a size against it, and I cannot give you one, because I have two measurements — a field I paced this morning, and a field a fifteen-year-old rode past years ago and did not survey. Two points is not a scale. It is an anecdote with a slope on it.”

”So what do you want?”

”Everything, from tomorrow. Field diameter, drain radius, throat depth, chamber volume, and what it actually costs to clear — every time, written the same way, whether or not it feels worth doing.” She looked up. ”Somewhere around the fifth or sixth of these I will be able to look at a dead field from the rim and tell you before we go down whether the number in that chamber is four thousand or forty. Until then I am guessing, and I would like it on the record that I said so.”

She turned the slate around before Jayde could answer that.

Four columns. Cost. What it eats. What it leaves. The fourth had no heading yet.

”It drained the life out of four hundred paces of good barley ground and left the minerals behind, concentrated, because minerals aren’t alive and it had no use for them. I put a spade down at the rim this morning and hit formation-conductive metal at less than a man’s height.” She tapped the third column. ”Not a seam. A layer. Every one of these is a deposit, and the thing that has been killing this world for ninety-nine centuries has also been quietly assembling the largest strategic metals reserve on Doha, and putting it exactly where nobody farms.”

”Cost column and benefit column.”

”Always.” Eden did not smile. ”I would still rather have the barley.”

***

The throat took most of the afternoon to find, and when they found it, it was not hidden at all. It was simply the sort of thing a person walks past.

Sixty paces in from the rim, on the eastern arc, the gray ground had subsided into a depression about the size of a threshing floor, and at the low point of it the soil had opened in a way that looked like nothing so much as a badly repaired well. Slabs of pale rock lay tipped against each other around the mouth. None of them had finished settling. Takara had come off her shoulder somewhere on the walk out and put himself back to full weight the moment the last roofline went behind the rise, and when he set one enormous paw on the nearest slab and leaned, it moved.

It has been coming down for a long time, Takara said into her head. The whole roof under this field is hollow. This is where it gave first, not where it is worst.

How far?

Angled, tight, and it turns twice in the first forty feet. A pause. I do not fit past the second turn.

”Then you hold the rim,” Jayde said aloud, and got a flat golden stare that she had learned to read as agreement delivered rudely.

Yinxin walked the mouth of it once, in human form, silver-white hair tied back and the gray robe pinned out of the wet, and stood at the edge and looked down for a long time.

”Forty minutes,” she said.

”That’s what I’ve built to.”

”You have not asked me whether I can do this one.”

”Because you’d tell me if you couldn’t.” Jayde put her boot against a slab, tested it, and did not like the answer. ”And because I picked this one for being a hundred and forty miles from anything that matters. Not for being small. I did not know until this morning that small was a thing a nest could be.” She heard how that sounded and did not soften it. ”There are three coming up through the floor of the world inside fifteen months and not one of them is this one. If we get it wrong today it goes on sitting here quietly, we come back in the spring having learned something, and nobody in that village pays for it.”

Yinxin’s mouth moved very slightly.

”You have never once said if we get it wrong out loud in my hearing.”

”Because it’s yours and mine.”

She heard it after she had said it, which was how she found out she meant it.

”It has been yours and mine since I was fifteen. You kill them, I stand in front of you while you do it, and that is the whole of the arrangement, and I have never once pictured it any other way.” Jayde straightened. ”Nobody else on this world knows these things exist. Not the survivors, not the Academy, not one person in a hundred and twenty-seven villages, and I would rather it stayed that way a while yet.”

Yinxin looked down into the throat.

”There are eighty-nine,” she said.

”I know how many there are.”

She did not say anything else. She had never in three thousand years wasted a word on a thing somebody was going to work out on their own, and Jayde stood at the mouth of a hole in the eastern arc of the Widow’s Field with the arithmetic sitting in her chest where it had been sitting since Frostforge, refusing to be looked at.

***

They set the ward stones at dusk.

Nine of them, at the rim, in a ring that took the four of them most of two hours and a great deal of swearing to true up, because ward stones want level ground and there was no level ground anywhere in four hundred paces. Isha’s marks went on the seating faces. Eden checked every one against the slate.

And when the ring came up — a thin pressure across the ears, like a held breath — Jayde watched Takara walk straight through it, out and back in, twice, without breaking stride.

Nobody said anything. Everybody looked.

The last time they had raised a ring like that, the keying had been written for people, because the person who wrote it had been thinking about people, and an eight-foot Lightning Panthera had spent a very bad quarter of an hour on the wrong side of a wall he could not cross while things happened on the other side of it. Nobody had said anything about that either. It had gone into the error log and stayed there.

Better, Takara said.

It’s keyed to the token now, not the shape. Anything carrying one walks through.

You changed it because of me.

I changed it because it was wrong. You are the reason I found out it was wrong. She watched him settle onto the frozen barley with his tail across his feet. Those are two different sentences, and I’m only saying one of them.

Eden had asked for it at the throat, and Jayde had said no twice before she understood the question.

”He was made by one of these,” Eden said. ”Or by something that looks like one of these. Zero-energy field, pheromone signal cut clean at the boundary, colony navigation stops dead — and one mantis on the wrong side of that line stops being part of a colony and starts being somebody. That is the entire origin of the individual sitting in your Pavilion, and I have never had a second example of the phenomenon to put beside it.”

”This isn’t the Harrowing.”

”That is precisely the question, and it presents identically from outside. Nothing grows. Nothing rots. Everything alive gives it a wide berth for reasons it can’t tell you.” Eden did not blink. ”And in about fourteen hours you are going to take him down a hole and stand him in front of whatever is in that chamber while Yinxin cannot move. If this ground does to him what that ground did to him, I would rather find out with the sky over us.”

So they waited until the lane had gone dark and the last cart was over the second rise. Then Jayde walked to the centre of the ring, checked the horizon out of four years of habit, and opened the way.

Ashborn came out onto the dead ground.

He had not stood on open earth since the mountain. The last of the light ran along the flat of his blade-arms as he came up out of the fold, and then he stopped, and the sensory pits turned slowly across four hundred and twenty paces of gray.

Eden was already moving around him with the slate.

”Well?” Jayde said, after a while.

”Nothing. Nothing at all.” Eden crouched at his forelimb without touching it. ”Chitin unchanged, respiration steady, and he came up onto that soil without checking his footing, which he does not do on ground he distrusts. He checked the footing on the Academy stair for a month.” She straightened. ”It isn’t the same phenomenon. I think it may be the opposite one.”

”Say that.”

”The dead spot was an absence. Nothing in it, nothing crossing it, no energy in the place for a signal to be carried by — which is why a pheromone trail simply ended at the line, and why anything that had walked past that line was on its own for good.” Eden turned and looked out at the gray. ”This is not an absence. There is an enormous amount of energy moving through this field. All of it is going one direction, and none of it is coming back. That is not silence; it’s a current. From outside, they look identical, because the result is the same and nothing lives. Underneath, they could not be less alike.”

”Then he goes down with us.”

”He goes down with us, and I have written that on the sheet with my name against it, so if I am wrong you will know exactly whose fault it was.”

Ashborn moved.

He went perhaps eight paces further onto the gray, unhurried, and stopped, and lowered one blade-arm until the flat of it rested on the dead soil — and stayed like that, quite still, for a good deal longer than there was any reason to.

Nobody said anything. There was nothing to ask him with, and he had never in his life offered anything he had not been asked for.

”Tomorrow,” Jayde said eventually. ”Not tonight.”

He folded down where he stood and did not move again.

***

Eden came and found her after full dark, when the field had gone the color of nothing, and there was one small fire on the rim, and nobody at it was talking.

She had a folded sheet in her hand, and she did not sit down.

”You’ll want this before tomorrow, not after.”

”The readings.”

”Four hundred and eleven on the mountain, plus everyone Green could reach by bird. Before-and-after where she had records, best estimate where she didn’t.” Eden held it out. ”It tracks with intake.”

Jayde took the sheet and did not open it.

”Say it properly.”

”The ones who ate most are up the most. The ones who ate least are up least. There are eleven people on those sheets who could not keep it down and got by on half of half for those five months, and every one of them is sitting exactly where they started and not a fraction above it.” Eden’s voice was entirely level and had nothing scientific in it at all. ”It isn’t the frame. It isn’t the fighting. It isn’t the year. Fourteen hundred people are up a full tier because we ate the things that were eating us, and I signed the order, and I did not know.”

The field lay out there in the dark, doing nothing, as it had done nothing for ninety-nine centuries.

”Who else has that sheet?”

”Nobody. Green has the raw numbers, and Green cannot read what they mean without me telling her, and I have not told her.” Eden finally sat. ”Jayde. There are nine hundred and ninety-two people going home over the next three months to a hundred and twenty-seven villages, and every one of them is carrying a full tier they did not earn and cannot explain, and inside a year somebody clever notices, and the first question that person asks is what did they eat.”

”And the second is where to get more.”

Eden nodded once and did not add anything to it, which was answer enough.

Jayde put the folded sheet into her coat unopened and looked out at four hundred and twenty paces of gray ground with a hole in the eastern arc of it.

”Tomorrow first,” she said.
