Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 523: Chapter 518: A Wall

Location:The dragon estate — The North Quarry, then The Workshop

Date/Time:26 Voidmarch, 9942 AZI, and four days after

Realm:Lower Realm

The cold came up out of the quarry floor the way it comes off stone, from underneath, arriving in the feet a long while before anybody thinks to mention it. Neither of them mentioned it.

Jayde turned a page and found she had filled the one before it without noticing.

”Which is a small use of it,” she said, ”and I want to be clear that I was thinking about the large one.”

”Were you.”

”Obviously.” She did not look up. ”Forget one man and a letter. Think about what a pair is. Two people, permanently linked, no delay, no medium, and a boundary between the realms that nothing else on this world crosses at will. That isn’t a curiosity. That is a signal relay, and it works when the passages are shut, which nothing else does.” She was writing again, fast. ”One pair split between here and the Upper Realm, and I have a line that cannot be cut, cannot be intercepted, cannot be read, and does not care what season it is. Put a second pair on the Mid Realm and the three worlds have a nervous system for the first time in their history —”

”If you wish to become the most unpopular person in the Demon Realm inside a week,” Heiteng said, ”propose separating a truemated pair.”

Jayde’s pen stopped.

”I didn’t say separate.”

”You said one in each realm.”

”...I did say one in each realm.”

”You did.”

”That’s — ” She looked at what she had written and made a small noise. ”Right. Yes. That’s obscene, isn’t it?”

”It is worse than obscene. It is impossible, which is much harder to get a hearing for.” Something moved at the corner of his mouth. ”They would not do it, and they could not be made to do it, and a King who suggested it out loud would not be a King for very much longer. And they would feel one another the entire time, so you would not even have the mercy of them not knowing what you had done.”

”Because the bond doesn’t stop.”

”The bond never stops. That is the entire point of it. Go on and ask me what you were going to ask half an hour ago and have been circling since.”

Jayde tapped the pen twice on the page.

”And if one of them dies?”

”The other dies. Immediately.”

”Not decline. Not grief.”

”The bond is one thing in two bodies, and it does not go on holding one of them up.” He turned his head. ”There is a single exception in the whole of our records. A female carrying a child lives until the birth, and no further.”

Jayde stopped writing.

”Say that again.”

”She lives until the child is born.”

”Not until it’s viable.”

”Until it is born.”

”That’s — ” She sat back. ”That’s a condition. Heiteng, that’s a condition in a mechanism. The bond isn’t between two people; it’s between two people, and it can carry a third, and pregnancy puts the third one inside it, and it holds while the third is inside it and drops the instant it isn’t.” She looked at what she had written and did not care for the look of it. ”Bonds don’t have conditions. Mechanisms have conditions. Mechanisms get made.”

”You have arrived in an afternoon,” Heiteng told her, ”at a place our scholars have never once reached, and they have had a very long while to try.”

”Your scholars weren’t allowed to say it out loud. It’s a sacred thing.” She shut the notebook. ”That’s the only advantage I have ever had over anybody. I don’t know what I’m not permitted to notice.”

***

”There is one more piece,” Heiteng said, ”and it is the piece I came down off that face to give you.”

”Go on.”

”They cannot betray one another.”

”Won’t.”

”Cannot.”

”No.” Jayde shook her head, and it came out harder than she meant it to. ”Everything can be betrayed. That isn’t cynicism; it’s just — everything. Oaths break. Contracts have clauses. People who would die for you sit down one afternoon and work out that there’s a version where they don’t have to, and I have watched that arithmetic happen on somebody’s face while they were still holding my hand.” She turned the basalt chip over. ”Won’t I’ll believe. Won’t is a good day. Nobody gets ’ cannot ’.”

”You are arguing about willpower,” Heiteng said, ”and I am not describing willpower.”

”Then describe what you are describing.”

”Deceit hurts them.” He said it as though it were an unremarkable fact about weather. ”Not conscience. Not shame. The intent itself registers as injury — a truemated man setting out to lie to his mate is a man walking into a wall in the dark, and the wall is still there on the second attempt and the tenth and the thousandth.”

Jayde stopped turning the chip.

”...Say that again.”

”He decides to deceive her, and it hurts him. Physically. Immediately. Before he has opened his mouth.” Heiteng spread the fingers of one hand and closed them again. ”That alone would not be enough. Men are extremely good at paying for things. But it is not alone, because the bond carries feeling as well as presence, both directions, all the time — so if he hurts her, he has hurt her, and then he feels it, at her strength, arriving on the same breath. Not remorse afterward. Not the memory of it at midnight. Hers, live, in his chest, while he is still standing there.”

”So there’s no gap.”

”There is no gap. That is the whole of it.” He looked out at the face. ”Every betrayal a person has ever committed lives in a gap. A gap between the doing and the cost, or between his face and hers, or between what he took and the day the bill came. A very long history and a great deal of imagination, and they have never once found a way to open one.” A shrug. ”So it is not that they are better than anybody. It is that the ordinary architecture of it is missing.”

Jayde did not say anything for a while.

Jayde was looking at the chip of basalt and turning it over and over in her fingers, and the light had gone the color of a bruise along the top of the quarry face, and somewhere below all of that a great many things had gone very quiet.

”That sounds restful,” she said.

She said it to the basalt, in the tone people use for something they have not decided to say out loud, and Heiteng — who had heard it perfectly, and who had been a diplomat rather longer than she had been alive — kept his eyes on the quarry wall and did not move a muscle in his face.

A second later she heard herself.

”Structurally,” she added, going briskly for the notebook. ”It’s a good structure. Very few systems get to be honest by construction; most of them have to be policed, and policing is expensive, so — ” She wrote something that was not a word. ”Right. Yes. Go on.”

”It is not a virtue,” Heiteng repeated. ”It is a wall.”

***

”Then I want one,” she said, when she had.

”No.”

”I hadn’t finished.”

”You did not have to.” He had not moved off the slab. ”You want a Terracore demon of standing on a dead field for three days, and you would like me to ask my brother for him. It is the correct request. I would have made it in your position, and I am going to take it away from you in about four sentences, and I would rather do it here than let you carry it to Ashbloom.”

”Go on, then.”

”He would be seen,” Heiteng said it first because it was the smallest of them. ”Jade-white skin. Eyes the color of whatever he carries. There has not been a demon standing on this continent in anything your Academy has bothered to write down, and you would put one in Emberholt Province with a Temple house four days’ ride off, on the only ground for a hundred miles that anybody has a superstition about.” A pause. ”You have spent four years and a quantity of blood on not being interesting.”

”That one I’d have found a way round. Night work. Distance. We move a Panthera the size of a horse.”

”You would. Which is why it is the smallest.” Mercury-silver came up. ”He cannot get here at all.”

Jayde put the pen down.

”Say that.”

”The Mid Realm has been closing its passages to yours for some while, and the road that came down through it is shut. What is left is one passage, and this end of it is held by the Temple, and everything that comes down it is counted by men who write everything down. There is no door for him. Not a costly door. Not a risky one. None.”

”...Right.” She sat with it. ”Right, then this is a different conversation than the one I was having.”

”It is about to be a worse one, because there is a version where the passage opens tomorrow and it is still no.” He turned his head. ”Do you know what descending does to a demon?”

”Realm Seal. Dwarf-work. Rare.”

”That is what it takes. Ask what it costs.”

Jayde waited.

”He comes down into air with a fraction of what he was built to breathe, and it does not merely inconvenience him. It takes tiers off him. Permanently.” Heiteng let that sit exactly where it landed. ”A Blazecrowned man arrives here as Inferno-tempered and stays Inferno-tempered for the rest of his life. Nothing repairs it. Not time, not resources, not going home again. Whatever he was, he is two steps below it, and he is that in front of everybody who ever knew him.”

”...To dig a hole.”

”To dig a hole.”

Jayde looked at the ground for a moment.

”And a weaker man survives it intact.”

”A weaker man survives it better and cannot do the work, which is the whole of the arithmetic and why I said no before you finished. The ones who could help you are precisely the ones it would ruin.” He shrugged. ”Ren would send him. That is the part you should understand. If you asked, my brother would find a man of standing who would volunteer, and he would send him, and he would put the cost of it on his own ledger with everything else he keeps there. So I am telling you before you ask, because I would rather not watch either of you do it.”

Jayde was quiet for a while.

”No,” she said. ”You’re right, and I’d have got there myself in about a week, and I’d have got there after I’d already asked.” She closed the notebook properly this time, and put the cord round it. ”It’s a pity. If I’d known any of this before the Mid Realm started shutting doors —”

”Then you would have had one for a season.”

”Then I’d have had one for a season, and I’d have measured everything he did, and we’d have known what was possible.” She let out a breath. ”That’s the part I mind. Not the hole. Six dragons will give me the hole. It’s that there’s a whole discipline up there that nobody down here has ever seen work, and the door shut before anybody thought to look through it.”

”There will be other doors.”

”There will.” Jayde stood, and stretched something in her back that had been complaining for an hour, and said the next thing without any particular weight at all, which was why it took him entirely unprepared. ”I’m going up there one day, you know. Not for the worms. Well — for the worms, first, obviously. But I’ve wanted to see the Upper Realm since the first month I understood there was one, and now you’ve spent an afternoon telling me about halls with no columns in them and cities that carry their own water, and I would very much like to meet a demon.”

Heiteng did not answer.

”That’s an odd thing to want, isn’t it?” she said. ”Half this continent would call it a nightmare.”

”Half this continent,” Heiteng said, ”has never been introduced.”

”Well. I’d like to be.” She put the notebook in her coat. ”When you write to your brother, tell him — ”

She stopped.

”Tell him what?”

”Nothing. It’d be strange, coming from me.” Jayde looked out at the three holes in the quarry face. ”Tell him thank you for the desert when you write. He didn’t have to give us those three.”

”I will tell him.”

”Say what I do instead, then. About the shaft.”

”What you did this morning. Six dragons who are bad at it, three days of them, and you get your hole.” He got up off the slab at last. ”And in some year I could not put a number on, when there is a reason for demons to be on this continent openly that has nothing whatever to do with you, you will get three hundred feet before noon and a cart road at the bottom of it.”

”That’s a guess.”

”It is a guess. I have never been good at years,” he admitted. He almost smiled. ”But it will not be this spring, and I would rather you did the arithmetic today than in Ashbloom with a schedule in your hand.”

***

Jayde looked at Huifu’s hole for a while and did not answer.

She was aware of what had happened in her chest, and that it had happened fast, and that Heiteng was a black dragon who read fate weaves for a living and had chosen this exact moment to study the quarry wall with great attention.

Cannot betray you.

Not trust built over four years and tested twice. Not a soul contract with a clause in it. Not White, who would die for her and had never once been asked whether he had chosen to. Not Qin, who had deferred to her inside an hour and had frightened her by doing it.

Something that could not, structurally, in the mechanics of what it was, sell her.

She had a very clear thought about how much of the last four years she would hand over for one of those, and then she put the thought down, because it belonged to somebody with a different life and there were three hundred feet of shaft to design.

”How long have we been sitting here?”

”Some hours.”

”Burn it.” She stood up and found her knees had opinions. ”I have a shaft.”

”You have a shaft.” Heiteng got off the slab. ”You asked me one question about digging and got an afternoon on my brother’s people, and I would like you to think about why.”

”You’re recruiting.”

”I am doing nothing whatsoever,” Heiteng said, ”and I intend to keep doing it thoroughly.”

He went up the track without another word. Jayde stayed where she was until the light left the quarry floor, and filled eleven pages, and headed the last of them questions that have answers and put nine things under it.

***

Heiteng walked the quarry track slowly, which he did not normally do, and which had nothing to do with the gradient.

Behind him, a human was sitting on a slab in the cold with a notebook, writing down demon architecture. She had asked him forty-one questions. He had answered thirty-nine, and had been obliged to hold two of them behind his teeth, and one of those two had cost him something.

Marketing.

He turned the word over the whole length of the track. An entire industry, she had said. Most of it vile. The good tenth of it being the arrangement of true things in an order that made somebody pick them up.

He had been alive a long while by the reckoning of anybody who drew breath, and had spent the greater portion of it being a weapon that other people pointed, and it had never once occurred to him that a person might make a profession of that. He found, on consideration, that he had been doing it since noon.

Not one lie. He was rather proud of that. He had described cities and spans and water carried up through stone and a race whose women could not kill, and every word of it was true, and he had put them in an order.

He could not tell her. That was the whole of the difficulty and had been since the weave gave it to him and did not ask his opinion — a thing he could not set down, could not hand over, and could not say, to her or to his brother or to anybody, until it arranged itself or did not.

But nobody had ever told him he could not spend an afternoon on a slab talking about architecture.

And there had been two moments.

The first was when he had described a thing that could not be betrayed to a young woman who had plainly been betrayed by somebody she had loved, and she had said that sounds restful to a piece of rock, and had not known she was going to.

The second was on her feet at the end of it, stretching her back, saying she would very much like to meet a demon — in the tone of a woman mentioning that she had always fancied seeing the sea.

He had kept his face entirely still through both. It had cost him more than everything else that afternoon put together.

Four hours, Heiteng thought, coming over the top of the track into the wind. Four hours, and she asked what a demon hall looked like, and she wrote his name down twice.

He hoped, with a warmth he would have denied on oath and under torture, that his brother appreciated the effort.

All that time, he thought, and the first thing he had ever marketed was his brother’s people. And his brother. To the one person on three worlds nobody was permitted to explain either of them to.

Not one lie in any of it. He kept coming back to that, and finding it as satisfying the fourth time as the first.

Ren, Heiteng thought, going down the far side of the hill into the wind, owes me a very great deal, and is never going to be told what for.

***

Kaelen’s answer came through the channel four days later, and Jayde read it twice standing up in the workshop before she understood what she was holding.

Three sites walked, with dates. The posts in the ground: ten months and a count of three and nothing else. A description of the desert margin as a farmer would give it, which was exactly what she had asked for and rather better than she had hoped. The archive: four months, and it would be done, and she was not paying for it — put in a way that did not invite a reply.

And a list.

Salt. Iron. The grinding grade. Seed for the eastern margin.

Cloth. The plain gray, and a quantity against it that she read twice, because four crates a quarter would not have carried a fortieth of it.

Nine thousand newly awakened this cycle and no coats for any of them.

Jayde read that line three times.

Then she went looking for the Academy’s winter allocation, and got as far as the door before she stopped, because there was a considerably better answer standing in the next room, and she had been out of the ground seven weeks without once thinking to use it.

Yinxin did not ask what it was for. She took her to the wall.

Jayde had seen the wall. She had walked past it a dozen times since Frostforge and had read it as what it looked like — a courier map, pins and colored thread, the thing that moved a message across a province in under an hour while the Temple took three days. She had been extremely pleased about the hour. She had never once stood in front of it and asked it a different question.

”Green is trade,” Yinxin said. ”You have been looking at the blue.”

”Show me the green.”

So Yinxin showed her the green, and it took some time, and Jayde said almost nothing for the whole of it.

A fulling mill at the west end of a valley whose name she did not know. Two weaving houses, one of them four years old and one of them started last spring, both of them owned through a modest merchant’s house that owned nothing else anybody could find. Dye works. A tannery. Eleven hundred acres of leased ground on the northern flat, planted to grain, harvested by people who had no idea whose it was and were paid on time, which had turned out to be the only recruitment argument that never failed. A cooperage. Two salt licenses bought cheap in a bad year.

”How much cloth,” Jayde said at last.

”Plain gray?”

”Plain gray.”

Yinxin considered the wall.

”Nine thousand coats is not a difficult number,” she said. ”It is a tedious number. Give me the winter, and it is loaded.”

Jayde stood in front of a map she had walked past for seven weeks and understood, entirely and all at once, that she had not been looking at a courier network.

She had been looking at a commissariat.

Somebody with three thousand years of inherited queens in her blood had spent the year Jayde was underground quietly building the thing that feeds an army, clothes it, pays for itself, and does not appear in anybody’s ledger — and had never mentioned it, because it had not needed mentioning, because it was not finished.

”Yinxin.”

”I know.”

”You built me a supply base.”

”I built a house that pays for itself,” Yinxin said, ”and then I built another one, and after the fourth I stopped pretending I did not know what I was doing.” She moved a green thread half an inch and did not look round. ”You were coming back. Whatever came back with you was going to need feeding.”

The manifest was written inside the hour, and Jayde did not enjoy any part of writing it as much as she had expected to.

Then she went back and looked at the last sheet again.

Heiteng told me seven weeks ago that you were out. I am glad of it.

Above that line there were four others, and every one of them had been struck through — twice, in two directions, hard enough that the pen had gone into the paper in three places and left a ridge she could feel with her thumb. Not a correction. Not a man tidying a phrase. Somebody had written four lines and then gone back over them until there was nothing left to read.

The sheet went up to the lamp anyway.

She got grateful, and part of a word that might have been nothing, and the tail of something at the end of the fourth line that could have been otherwise and could have been almost anything.

Jayde stood in the workshop with a lamp and somebody else’s obliterated handwriting for rather longer than she was prepared to account for.

Then she put it down, and wrote coats at the top of a clean page, and got on with it.
