Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 539: Chapter 534: The Sand

Location:The Eastern Margin, Four Days beyond Zhū’kethara

Date/Time:18 Ashwhisper, 9942 AZI — before first light

Realm:Upper Realm

The sand here did not hiss.

Ren had crossed the eastern margin perhaps thirty times in ten thousand years, and every one of those crossings had come with the same sound underneath it — a dry running whisper as the top skin of the dune moved with the night wind, grain over grain, the noise a realm makes when it is quietly getting bigger. He had heard it as a boy. He had heard it the year the margin took the last of the northern holdings and the families came down the road with their doors on carts, because a door was worth more than a house you could not carry.

Tonight it had stopped.

It had stopped an hour ago, somewhere between the third and fourth waymark, and he had said nothing about it, and Kaelen had said nothing about it, and the six Kael’thoren behind them had closed up by half a length without being told. Theron, who had spent four days on the road explaining that eight hundred thousand resettled mixed-bloods on the western holdings had a claim on him as good as any hole in the ground, closed up with the rest of them and went on saying nothing about it.

”How far?” Ren asked.

”By the complaint, a little under two thousand paces from where the road bends.” Kaelen did not look at the paper. He had not looked at the paper since the second day. ”By the second complaint, which is younger and worse written, closer. I would rather trust the older one. The man who wrote it was trying to keep his assessment down and had every reason to be accurate about a hole.”

”And the third?”

”The third is a Shan’kara asking for relief and does not give a distance. He gives a direction and a season, and the direction agrees.”

Ren shifted his weight in the saddle and let the horse pick its own line down the shoulder of the dune. Behind him, the string of remounts had gone quiet, which happens when the ground changes under animals, and was the second thing tonight to happen without anybody’s permission.

Three complaints. Four floors of a cellar under the east tower, ten thousand years of a realm’s paper, indexed since before his grandfather by house — who owed, who paid, who married whom and what came with her — and Kaelen had taken three weeks and cut the whole of it a second way, by ground. Not who. Where.

He had not been looking for a fourth circle. He had three. He had had them for two years; Kaelen had walked all three and written the same sentence about each of them, and the listening posts had been in the ground under the whole realm for ten months and had heard nothing whatever. The count was three. It was going to stay three.

What he had wanted, since he read her sheets, was a way under one of them.

There was not one. She had found that out standing on top of the second of hers, and had put it on paper without dressing it up at all: the ground over a dead field does not have a door in it. It settles. It closes. Whatever way in there had once been, the field takes back.

So she had asked him for wells. Not battles, not portents, not the interesting half of anything — wells, roads, and tax assessments on ground that had stopped paying. Anywhere a man had cut down into ground nobody had ever asked the depth of.

Three complaints, then, about the same few hundred paces of the eastern margin, three different names on that ground between the first and the last, and in the oldest of them one line that a prefect had copied down without understanding it and nobody had read since.

The well did not run dry. The well went through.

***

The holding smelled of penned animals and wet ash, which meant somebody was still living in it, which Kaelen had told him and which he had not entirely believed until the smell arrived.

Denvahr came out with a lamp before they were inside the wall, and he came out at an angle, with something in the other hand, which is how men on a margin come out at night. Bronze-tinted jade gone leathery at the neck and forearms. Copper eyes and copper hair, both dulled down and thinning out in a man nobody had ever mated and nobody was going to. Peak Inferno-tempered, which on this margin was what poor looked like — a whole realm breathing essence thick enough to cultivate a man in his sleep, and this one had come out at the bottom of it anyway.

Denvahr got as far as who before he saw the purple, and then he went down on the packed dirt of his own yard so fast that the lamp guttered.

”Rise,” Ren said. ”I have not come to look at your assessment.”

Denvahr did not get up.

”I have come to look at a hole, and I am told it is on your ground, and I would like a man who knows it to walk me to it instead of a man who has read about it.” He swung down. His boots hit the dirt, and he felt, through the soles, the same absence that had been under the horses for the last hour. ”Rise.”

Denvahr rose.

The hole was nine hundred paces out, and it took them the better part of an hour, because Denvahr walked it wide and never twice on the same line.

”My grandfather’s grandfather cut it,” he said, at about the halfway mark, when he had decided that talking was safer than not. ”Not this one. The one before. That one filled. This one is what he cut when that one filled, and it drew for four years, and then the winch went slack in a night.”

”Slack.”

”The rope kept going.” Denvahr made a gesture with the lamp hand, a long fall. ”There was no water and no bottom. He put the whole rope down it, and the whole rope went. He said he heard it land, and my father said he heard nothing at all, and I have never asked which of them was lying, because they are both dead and neither of them was ever any good at a well.”

Kaelen had come up on the other side. ”How far across is the mouth?”

”Two paces. It was one when he cut it.”

”It has grown.”

”Everything on this margin has grown,” Denvahr said, ”except the holding.”

Ren crouched at the rim.

There is a thing a cultivator does at a boundary without deciding to, the way a man puts a hand flat on a wall in the dark. Ren opened, a little, out and down.

Nothing came back.

It was not thinness. It was not the slackness either — Heiteng had crossed that country eleven times before the war, had never once felt one, and had gone out of his way to say so. There was no credit in reporting nothing. Ren had believed him. This was a piece of the world with nothing being taken out of it and nothing left in it to take, dead and level and finished, like a hearth swept out and never lit again.

A vacated nest has neither tell and is invisible from a horse. Her hand, sheet four, in a script that leaned when she was tired.

She had been right about the horse.

”Rope,” Ren said.

Kaelen did not move. ”Eight million, seven hundred and forty-three thousand.”

”I know the number.”

”Then you know you are the one man in this realm who does not get to go down a hole to look at something.”

”Nobody on this world has stood in a dead one.” Ren was already unbuckling. ”If I send six men down, what comes back up is six men’s words. Rope.”

Kaelen held his look a moment longer, then turned and called for the rope.

***

Going down took the rest of the night and half the following day, and it was ugly, and it was ugly because there was no clever way to do it and Ren had known that in Zhū’kethara and come anyway.

The shaft was a well for the first sixty feet, which meant it was cut for a bucket and not for a man in armor, and it had gone out of true where the sand met rock. Below that it stopped being a well and became something else: a crack that the well had happened to find, widening as it went, its walls not cut but fitted, one face still carrying the shape of the other.

They widened the bad places with hammers, because Ren would not put essence into a shaft he intended to come back up. Six Kael’thoren, two at a time, working in the dark on ropes with the spoil going down instead of up because there was nowhere else to put it. Ilvaren, who was the oldest of them, set a pace the other five could hold for two days. Torvhal and Yorren on the ropes. Nharo, who was the smallest and therefore went into the places nobody else fitted. Sarvhek, who had Verdant under his Voidshadow and had spent four hundred years being the reason a Kael’thoren company did not stop for a split hand.

The dust was the worst of it. It hung. There was no draft to move it, which told him something he did not like about what was below, and he filed that and said nothing.

Kael’dovan took the second shift and the fourth and would have taken the sixth if Ren had let him. He was young for a Kael’thoren. He had not yet been anywhere that did not have a door in it, and it came out of him as cheerfulness. Halfway through the fourth shift he found the hammer was faster if he braced against the far wall with his back, and he taught it to Nharo below him, and by the fifth shift all six were doing it.

Torvhal opened his hand to the bone on a bad swing in the third hour. Sarvhek put two fingers on it and had it shut before the man had finished swearing, and Torvhal went back on the hammer, and nobody remarked on any of it, because that is what Sarvhek was for.

At the sixth hour Dovan called up that the rock had changed.

Ren went down.

It had changed. The fracture face went from the gray-brown grit of the margin to something darker and finer, with a grain in it like fired clay, and it went to it not gradually but along a line, and the line was flat, and it ran horizontally as far as the lamps carried in both directions.

Kaelen put two fingers on it, then his palm, then leaned in and put his cheek against it.

”Warm?” Ren asked.

”No.” Kaelen straightened. ”Smooth. Da’Ren, this is not a fracture face. Fractures are rough because two pieces of stone came apart under load and neither of them is a plane. This one is a plane.” He ran his hand along it, out to the edge of the light. ”For as far as I can reach.”

”Cut?”

”Worn,” Kaelen said it without any weight at all, which was how Ren had learned over ten thousand years to tell when the man was frightened. ”By something that went along it a great many times.”

***

The chamber opened under them at a little after noon, though there was no noon down there, and Ren only knew it because Kaelen had been counting turns of the glass since the surface, and Kaelen had never in his life understood the word approximately.

The last thirty feet were free air. The crack simply ended, and the lamps went out into nothing, and the rope’s coil, when Dovan kicked it loose, unrolled and unrolled and made a sound at the bottom that came back late.

They went down onto a floor of fine gray dust that took a boot to the ankle and closed over it without a mark.

Ren stood there and let his eyes do what they could.

The lamps could not find a wall. Ren put a thread of Voidshadow out along the floor, low and flat, the sweep a man uses on a room he is about to have to fight in, and it went and went and came back to him thinned to almost nothing, and what it brought back was scale.

Vaulted. Perhaps eighty feet at the crown and hollowed in long lobes off the main volume, each lobe the size of a granary, and the whole of it worked — not cut, not carved, but eaten, the way a beetle eats a book, every surface bearing the same shallow scalloping at the same radius, over and over and over, until the shape of the thing that made it was written across an underground cathedral in a single repeated stroke.

Three thousand two hundred, she had written, and underlined twice that it was a count and not an estimate. Three thousand two hundred, in one chamber the size of a granary.

Ren looked down the length of this one, at the granaries coming off the main volume one after another into the dark, and did the arithmetic he did not want to do. Nine thousand. Ten. Eleven.

”Nothing,” Kaelen reported.

Ren said nothing.

”Da’Ren, there is nothing here. I have walked this site three times on the surface and written old, cold, nothing living three times and been correct three times, and every one of those three times I was standing over this.” Kaelen turned a slow circle, lamp up. ”And it was the whole of it. It is empty.”

”It is empty now.”

”It has been empty a long time. There is no shed casing. There is no midden. In her fifth sheet she describes a floor of shed casing a hand deep and says it is the most reliable thing in a chamber because it does not rot.” Kaelen went down on one knee and drove his hand into the dust and brought up a fistful and let it run. ”This is stone. This is the ceiling coming down at the rate a ceiling comes down. Nothing has lived here in a very long time, and nothing died here either, because dying leaves more than this.”

Ren walked out along the main lobe with the lamp low.

Three of these, in his realm. Placed on purpose, Kaelen had said two years ago, and had been right about that as well. Seeded, then, as the eighty-nine on her continent had been seeded — and hers had gone from one breeding pair to eighty-nine fields across a rock the size of a shoulder of his own, and his had gone from three to three, and then to nothing at all.

I want you to consider that the nothing may be the finding.

She had written that on the fifth of six sheets, seven weeks out of a hole in a mountain she was not able to describe, in among the diameters and the drain figures.

The stone was at the base of the fourth lobe.

It was in the wall, at knee height, where the scalloping ran across it and stopped and started again on the far side. A block the width of both his hands, dressed square, its face carrying a shallow mark that was not scalloping and not weather and had been put there by somebody with a tool and an intention.

The stone around it was the dark fine grain of the whole chamber. The block was not. The block was pale, and close-grained, and it did not belong to this ground or to any ground within four days of it.

Ren put his fingers into the seam and pulled, and it did not move, and then he stopped being polite about it, and it came out into his hands with a sound like a tooth.

Behind it there was more of it. A course. Dressed, laid, level, running away into the wall and under the eaten stone, and the eaten stone was on top.

Which meant the wall had been here first.

Ren was still holding the block, turning it, when the floor moved.

***

It did not move the way a floor moves.

Forty feet out, along the throat between the third lobe and the fourth, a strip of dust perhaps eight paces wide lifted, all at once, evenly, as a sheet lifts on a bed — and did not fall, and went on lifting, and the dust ran off both edges of it in two long gray falls that hissed on the floor.

Ren had a heartbeat to understand what he was looking at, and he used it badly, because what he thought was stone, and it was not stone.

It had been under the dust. It had been under the dust so long the dust had a crust on it. It came up on the near side first, tilting, and the underside came into the lamplight, and the underside was a ring — soft, wet, pale as the inside of a mouth, and set around it in a spiral going inward were plates of something that was not tooth and did no work a tooth does. They did not bite. They rasped. He watched two of them cycle once, dry, an inch apart, and the sound they made was the sound of the shallow scalloping on a thousand feet of wall, and he understood the entire history of the chamber in less time than it took to draw breath.

”OUT,” Ren said. ”Rope. Now. Move.”

They moved. Kael’thoren do not ask.

The thing had no eyes. There was nowhere on it for eyes to have been. It came off the floor into a low arch and went for the nearest heat in the room, and the nearest heat in the room was Yorren and Torvhal at the rope, and it crossed forty feet of chamber in the time a slow animal takes to decide to be a fast one.

Ren got there first. He had not drawn on the way in; the soulblades came up out of him at the fold of the arch, and he did not have to think about it, and had not had to think about it in nine thousand years.

A full soulblade went through the leading edge at the join between two plates, and the blade went into the crossguard, and it was like putting a knife into wet clay over stone — no give, then all give, then bone. The thing did not scream, because it had nothing to scream with. It backed a body length and shed the blade and came again on a different line, and Ren learned the second thing about it, which was that it did not care about pain in any sense he understood, and the third, which was that it was faster on the second attempt than the first.

Voidshadow, then. He took the light out of eight paces around himself and put himself into the middle of it, which is the oldest trick a demon king owns and works on every predator on this world, because every predator on this world hunts something that can see.

It came straight through the dark and hit him in the chest with thirty feet of itself behind the blow.

Nothing broke. Nothing on this world had broken anything of his in a very long time, and this did not either. What happened instead was that eight paces of blind wet animal came down on top of him and stayed there, and it took him four seconds to come out from under it, and four seconds is not nothing when they are spent in the wrong part of a room.

It does not hunt by sight. It has never hunted by sight. It hunts by heat, and I have just made myself the only warm dark thing in a cold room.

”Kaelen — the lamps — put every lamp on the floor and get them lit and get away from them—”

Kaelen was already doing it. He had been doing it since the second exchange, having watched the first one and arrived at the same conclusion in the same order without needing to be told, which was why Ren had brought him and why the realm was still standing.

Six lamps went down in a scatter across the throat and the men went sideways off them, and the thing swung — bodily, its whole eight paces of front edge — toward the nearest and brightest, and Ren got four clear breaths out of it and spent them all on closing.

Ren took it at the fold where the rasping ring met the flat of the body, because that was the only place on it that had shown him a seam, and he opened it from that seam outward along thirty feet of its own length with both blades and no particular difficulty at all — which was the worst thing in the chamber, because it meant every one of those seconds had been his to spend, and he had spent them here.

It came apart. Not quickly. There was a great deal of it, and most of it did not appear to know it was dying, and the last section of it was still rasping at the stone twenty feet from anything alive when it finally stopped.

Dovan was at the rope.

He had gone back for the rope. That was all. The rope had come off its pin in the second exchange, and without it there was no way out of that chamber for any of them, and Kael’dovan, who had never been anywhere without a door, had worked that out on his own and gone back across the throat to put it on again while the lamps were still rolling.

The rope was on the pin. Both turns.

Ren reached him at the same moment Kaelen did, and they got the weight off him between them, and Sarvhek came across the throat without being called and went down on the other side with both hands in and Verdant running.

It had not cut him, and it had not bitten him. It had gone over him, and it had stayed, and a Kael’thoren under eight paces of that in the dark can hold and be held and keep working and still be under it. Dovan had put the rope on the pin from beneath the thing, one-handed, and Ren was going to be a long time putting that down.

Sarvhek got him closed and could not get him breathing right.

Then Theron was there, and Sarvhek pulled his hands out and made room without being asked to — which would not have happened in this realm on the day Theron was found dying beside a road, and happened here with nobody giving it a thought.

Radiance has never looked like light. What went out of Theron’s hands and into Dovan, Ren felt go: the one essence out of the eight he had never carried and never would, running out of a man whose mother had been human, into a Kael’thoren, on a floor a thousand feet under a realm that had spent most of its history insisting men like Theron were not born.

It took a long time. Theron did not hurry any part of it and did not stop, and somewhere in the middle of it Kaelen quietly moved a lamp so the light was not in Theron’s eyes, and that was the whole of what any of the rest of them could contribute.

”Is it on?” Dovan asked, when he could.

”It is on.”

”Both turns?”

”Both turns,” Ren said.

Theron sat back on his heels and stayed there, and did not get up for some while, and when he did get up he did it the way a man does who has nothing left in him to do it with.

***

They came up in the dark of the second night, and the sand at the top of the shaft was moving again, running grain over grain with the wind off the dune, and Ren stood at the rim without a mark on him anywhere and let the sound of it go on for a while without doing anything about it.

Denvahr had waited. He had waited two days at the mouth of a well on his own ground with a lamp he had not needed for a day and a half, and when the first rope came up he had taken hold of it and hauled with the rest of them, an Inferno-tempered margin holder pulling a Kael’thoren out of a hole hand over hand alongside his king, and nobody had told him to and he had not asked.

”Does it have a name?” Ren asked him. ”The animal. Down there. Is there a word for it on this margin?”

Denvahr thought about it for a long time, still holding the rope.

”No,” Denvahr answered.

”None at all?”

”There’s a word for the ground.” He nodded out at the flat black of it. ”We call it sunk. That’s all it is. Ground that went. Nobody’s got a word for what’s under it, Da’Ren, because—”

Then he stopped, and Ren watched him arrive at it, and did not help him.

”—because nobody’s come back up to make one.”

The mouth went at some point in the third hour after that, without any noise worth the name. Ren was fifty paces off with his back to it when the light changed, and by the time he had turned around there was a shallow dish in the sand where a well had been since Denvahr’s grandfather’s grandfather, and the sand was already running into it, grain over grain, in the ordinary way.

The field had taken its door back. She had put that on paper, and he had read it and had not understood, until now, that it was a thing which happened while you watched.

Two circles left in this realm and no hole in either of them, and now three.

They put Dovan on a horse and not in a litter, because he asked, and Theron allowed it, and nobody was going to argue with Theron about anything for the next four days. Theron they put on a horse as well, and Ilvaren rode at his elbow the whole way without being told to, in case.

Ren rode at the head of it because that was where he rode.

He had killed it in under a minute, and inside that minute he had not been able to do one other thing. That was the whole of it. There was nothing alive on this world that could stand in front of him, and there never had been, and it had never once been worth as much as standing in the right forty feet of a room.

Four days back. Kaelen would want the whole of the chamber written before they reached the second waymark and would have half of it in his head already, sorted, cross-cut, filed against three complaints and a fading man’s direction and a season.

Three seedings in this realm. Three, and then three, and then nothing — and a realm that had lived on top of them for ten millennia and had never lost a herd or a child or a harvest to them, and had never once written the word down, because there had never been anything to write.

Something had got here first. Something that ate through stone and did not come up, because there was nothing up here it wanted, and had been down there so long that the dust had grown a crust across its back, and had held that chamber against the only siege ever laid against his world, which nobody had ever told him was a siege — and had done it without one line in the whole of his realm’s paper having the faintest idea, except one man with a well who had written that it did not run dry.

It went through.

She would want the diameter of the rasping ring. She would want the radius of the scalloping, and the depth of the dust, and whether the plates cycled dry or wet, and she would want it in her own units, and she would not thank him for guessing.

She would also want to know that there was dressed stone under the eaten stone, laid level, by somebody, before any of it.

The margin was still running when they made the third waymark, and it was the hour of the night when a king is the only man awake in a camp, and there is nothing to be done about it.

Ren sat with his back against a saddle and reached for the channel, which was the only thing he owned that nobody could open, intercept, or read on the way, and which she had told him in her own hand did not have to be worth six sheets.

He had a chamber, a wall course and a rasping ring to give her, and every one of them was worth six sheets, and all of it could wait for paper.

He had nothing to give Denvahr at all, except a well, which he would send men and money for and which would not be the same well.

Six words went, without his going back over them.

You were right about the horse.
