Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 505: Chapter 500: The Harvest

Location:Dragon estate — operations room

Date/Time:5 Frostforge, 9942 AZIRealm:Lower Realm, Doha

The brazier had been built up twice by then, and the tea had gone round three times, and nobody had left the room.

”Before the Academy,” Jayde said, ”I am going to say a set of things that everybody in this room already knows.”

”Why?” Yinxin asked.

”Because I am about to argue for changing what we do about them, and I want the argument sitting on the table instead of in my head where it has been for four days.”

She went back to the wall.

”Every ten thousand years the Zartonesh come through. That is not a prophecy. It is a cycle, and this world has been through enough of them that there is nothing left to debate.” She did not look around; nobody was going to contradict her. ”Before the gate opens, the passages between the realms close. The Upper Realm fights the worst of it. The Mid Realm fights its own war and bleeds and survives. And the Lower Realm is sealed in with what comes through and is finished with, and by the time anything can travel again there is not much down here left to travel to.”

”The weakest of them come here,” Eden said.

”The weakest of them. Against a realm with the doors shut and its strongest people already gone.” Jayde’s voice stayed level. ”The noble houses know. They have always known — it is the one thing the great families of this realm have reliably passed down. A century or two out, they start moving their best people up while the passages still permit it. Bloodlines, archives, heirlooms, the children worth keeping. Then the gate opens on everybody they left standing in the dark.

”And when the passages allow travel again, they come home. Intact. Cultivated. Nine thousand years of accumulated advantage over people who spent that same span surviving in ruins. They take everything, and they call it restoration, and then they spend the next nine thousand years shipping this realm’s talent and resources upward, because that is what the arrangement has always been for.”

”Which is not a disaster,” Eden said. ”That is a harvest.”

”Yes.”

”I have watched it once,” Heiteng said. He had not moved. ”I was eight thousand years old, and I did nothing, because there was nothing to do.”

”Nine,” Isha said. ”Not read. Watched. I am ninety-eight thousand years old, and they come every ten thousand, and I have been present and recording for every one of them, because recording is what I was made to do.” The light did not move at all. ”Four times I have written down what happened to this realm. The entries differ in the names. In nothing else.”

***

”And what is under it,” Jayde said, ”we already have the shape of.”

She looked at the golden light.

”The tiers. Out loud, for the room.”

”The Zartonesh are not the enemy,” Isha said. ”They are the enemy’s lowest tier. Shadowspawn — one created army among hundreds. Above them the Devourers, who are generals. Above the Devourers, the Maleficari, who are the originals, and who made the other two.” A pause. ”Four invasions of this world, and every one of them has been foot soldiers. We have never once seen the thing that sent them.”

”And the worms are theirs,” Jayde said. ”One breeding pair, an extinct species, placed deliberately in this realm’s crust while nobody was watching. Nine thousand nine hundred years of it draining the world spirit slowly enough that everybody blamed natural cycles.” She put her hand flat on the map. ”The nests are not a separate problem from the war. They are the same operation. Somebody sowed the ground before the army arrived, and then somebody with passage access carried a pair upward and did it to the demon realm as well.”

”None of which is new,” Xinglong said, from the corner. ”You said it yourself.”

”None of it is new. It is the reason your company exists.”

***

That landed differently, and everybody in the room felt it land.

”Finish that,” Xinglong said.

”We have known the war is coming for years. So we built the only answer available to people with no standing — a mercenary company with real contracts and real books, forty-seven operatives who think they work for a business, a courier network that looks like trade, arrays that look like village chatter, and a Silver Dragon Queen running the whole thing out of a back room in a rented house.” Jayde looked around the room. ”Every piece of what we own is disguised as something smaller. That was not a preference. It was what we could afford.”

”It has worked,” Yinxin said.

”It has worked extremely well, and I would do it again in the same position.” Jayde shook her head. ”I am not in the same position. That is what changed under the mountain, and it took me most of the year to understand it.”

”Meaning?” Heiteng said.

”I went in with nothing. No cultivation, no gear, no authority, no name that meant anything to anyone. And I came out with an army, a manufacturing capability, a doctrine that beat something that adapts, and fourteen hundred people who will stand where I put them.” She let that sit. ”Not one part of that was hidden. I built it in the open, in front of two and a half thousand witnesses, because there was nowhere to hide it and no time to be clever. And it worked better than anything we have ever built in the dark.”

Xinglong had come off the wall.

”You want to bring it up,” he said.

”I want to stop running an insurgency against a future.” Jayde’s hand stayed on the map. ”An underground movement can hide from the Temple. It cannot train a hundred thousand people. It cannot hold a wall in seventy years. It cannot be handed to somebody else when I am dead, because the day the person at the center of a secret dies, the secret dies with them and everything under it collapses.”

”And a legitimate structure can be taken from you,” Xinglong said. ”Legally. In daylight. By people with better lawyers.”

”Yes.”

”You are proposing to trade the one advantage we have actually got.”

”I’m proposing to trade concealment for permanence,” Jayde said, ”because concealment does not survive me and permanence might.”

The room was quiet.

”The houses are leaving,” she said. ”The passage is closing. The Temple is going to spend the next decade losing its grip on this realm whether we help it or not. And when they have all gone, there is going to be a gap where the powers used to be — and something is going to fill it, and it will either be something we built on purpose, or it will be whoever is standing there with the most soldiers.”

She turned around.

”So I am not building an underground anymore. I am building institutions. In daylight. With charters and oaths and names on doors, so that they are still standing in seventy years when everyone in this room is a story somebody tells.”

”Which brings us to the Academy,” Jayde said. ”I’m going to Qin.”

She got up off the floor.

”The Obsidian Academy has a hundred thousand students, and one founding mandate, and the mandate is the Task. Everything else on that mountain grew up around a seal. Every fifty years two and a half thousand of the senior grades go down into it so the population underneath stays balanced, and every headmaster in the chain has known exactly what he was sending them into and sent them anyway, because the alternative was worse.”

”Qin knows this better than you do,” Green said quietly. It was the first thing she had said all evening. ”It has cost him his cultivation.”

”Which is why he will listen.”

”To what, precisely?”

”To turning it into a military academy. Real doctrine, real logistics, real medicine, real command. Federation standards, taught as engineering instead of as sect secrets.”

”For the Harrowing,” Xinglong said.

”No.” Jayde shook her head. ”That’s the part everyone is going to assume, and it’s the smallest thing on the list. Fixing the Harrowing is a side effect. If we do this properly, then a cohort goes down that hole trained and comes back out at nine in ten instead of one in two, and that matters enormously to two and a half thousand families, and it is still not why I am doing it.”

”Then say why.”

”Because the houses are carrying this realm’s talent up that passage right now, and in about seventy years the gate opens on whatever is left behind.” She let that sit. ”You cannot chase what they are taking. You cannot get it back. The only answer to a harvest is to grow faster than it can be reaped, and there is exactly one institution on this continent capable of doing that.” ”Nobody in this room is going to be the one who fights that war. The people who fight it are not born. What I can do is make certain that when it arrives, there is an institution here that has been building soldiers and engineers and field surgeons for seventy years without interruption, instead of a mountain full of teenagers being sorted for a cull.”

”Seventy years is an estimate,” Isha said.

”Seventy years is a guess with bad error bars, and the error bars run in both directions.” Jayde looked at the map. ”Which is the other reason to start now.”

***

”But that is the far end of it,” she said, ”and I am not going to sell Qin a war his grandchildren fight. Between now and then, the thing does something else.”

”Which is?”

”It makes the Lower Realm able to say no.”

She put her hand flat on the wall, over the eastern provinces.

”Look at what actually happens here. The Temple takes what it wants and calls it doctrine. Mid Realm cultivators come down and treat this entire tier as a supply cupboard, and the reason they can is that nobody down here has ever been able to stop them. Clans hold land and hold people. Thralls. Vassals. A family loses a challenge, and three generations belong to somebody. And underneath all of it sits the same arrangement — a small number of people with resources cultivate, and everybody else is Ashborn, and Ashborn means you were born without the resources to advance and you will die without them, and in between you are useful to somebody.”

Nobody in the room contradicted any of it.

”An Academy that turns out capable people at scale ends that. Not by decree. By arithmetic.” Jayde’s voice stayed level. ”You cannot hold a population as property once it can read, build, treat wounds, and fight in formation. It stops being possible. Not immoral — impossible. The whole structure of this realm depends on most people being unable to do anything about anything, and I intend to remove that condition.”

”You are describing the end of every clan on this continent,” Heiteng said.

”I’m describing the end of every clan that only exists because the people under it have no alternative. The ones that are worth something will still be worth something.”

”They will not draw that distinction.”

”No,” Jayde agreed. ”They won’t.”

Xinglong laughed — one short, entirely humorless sound.

”Do you understand what you have just proposed?” he said. ”Not the army. The army was a legal question. This is the abolition of the ordering principle of an entire tier of a world, and the people it takes from will not write letters about it.”

”I understand.”

”And when they come?”

”Then that is what the army is for,” Jayde said. ”That is exactly what the army is for. Not to take a seat. Not to put me on one. To stand between a clan and the village it has decided to make an example of, and to be good enough at it that the clan reconsiders.”

***

”Then the curriculum,” Eden said. ”Because none of that happens with the intake you have now.”

”No, it doesn’t.” Jayde turned from the wall. ”It isn’t one school. It’s two, and the first one is not military at all.”

***

”Lower school first,” she said. ”Entry at six. Out at fifteen.”

”Six,” Yinxin said.

”Six.”

”That is what the clans do,” Heiteng said flatly. ”They take them at six.”

”They take them at six and own them at twelve. Ours go home every night, and out the door at fifteen with everything they learned belonging to them.” Jayde did not raise her voice. ”No indenture. No debt. No contract signed by a parent that a child pays off with twenty years of their life. And before anybody objects on the child’s behalf — tell me what a six-year-old in this realm is doing right now instead. The honest answer is working a clan’s field, and being Ashborn by twelve, and being a thrall by twenty. I have been on the wrong end of that arithmetic personally.”

Nobody said anything.

”Nine years. Cultivation and science, braided, not one bolted onto the other.” She counted it off. ”Cultivation from six, because that is when foundations set, and every family that can afford to already knows it — that is exactly why the powerful start their children at six and nobody else can. Alongside it: letters. Numbers, and mathematics well past accounting. Natural philosophy. Materials and metallurgy. Anatomy. Formation theory taught as a discipline instead of a family secret. Agriculture, water, sanitation. Basic engineering. History that is not the Temple’s history.”

”Where?” Yinxin asked.

”The base of the mountain. Not up top with Qin — down where the roads meet, where a child from a village three days out can be boarded, and a child from the town can walk.” Jayde put her hand flat on the map. ”It sits directly over the seal, which I am aware of, and which I intend to be true for a very long time.”

”And at fifteen?”

”Most of them go home.” She let that land, because she could see the room expecting something else. ”That is the part I need everybody to hear properly. This is not a recruiting funnel with nine years of preamble. The overwhelming majority walk out at fifteen literate, numerate, able to treat a wound, able to read a formation, able to cultivate on a foundation somebody actually built for them — and they go back to their villages and their trades and their families and they are never soldiers.

”That is not the leftover. That is the point. Fourteen hundred soldiers cannot end thralldom in this realm. Two hundred thousand people who can read a contract can.”

***

”And the second school,” Heiteng said.

”Sixteen. Five years. That one is the Military Academy, and it takes whoever wants it and can hold it.” Jayde looked around the room. ”Volunteers only. No conscription, no quota, no clan placing a son. You apply, you’re assessed, and the assessment is not what tier you are.”

”Then what is it?”

”Whether you can be taught, whether you can be relied on, and whether you can stand something.” She shrugged. ”A Blazecrowned who cannot be told anything is worth less to me than an Ashborn who can. I have fourteen hundred people who proved that for a year.”

Eden had picked her datapad back up.

”Structure,” she said.

”Common year first. Every cadet, no exceptions, no streaming — one full year of the same thing. Drill, weapons, field craft, basic medicine, basic formation work, basic logistics, and doctrine taught as doctrine. At the end of it every single one of them can hold a shield wall, load a crossbow in the dark, stop a bleed, and read an order.” Jayde’s voice was even. ”Nobody specializes until they have been a soldier. That is not a tradition; that is a rule, and it applies to the ones who will end up commanding armies most of all.”

”And after the common year?”

”Four years on track. Streamed by aptitude and by what they actually want, and I want both, because a man put where he is useful and unhappy is a man who leaves.”

She counted them on the wall as if the wall already had them.

”Line. The largest track, and I want it understood in this room that it is not the failure track — it is the reason the other four exist. Infantry doctrine, formation fighting, small-unit command, terrain. Sergeants come out of Line, and a force is made or lost on its sergeants.

”Command. Tactics, operational planning, staff work, intelligence, terrain, supply as a commander’s problem and not somebody else’s. And casualty handling, taught formally, because I had to learn it in a tunnel with a list in my head and nobody should have to.

”Medical. Eden’s. Triage, field surgery, cultivation-compound pharmacology, evacuation chains, and enough sanitation and disease work that they are useful in a village in peacetime, which is where most of them will be.

”Engineering. Fortification, formation-work, siege, fabrication, materials. They build the walls, the emplacements, the bolts and the machines that make the bolts.

”Logistics. Supply, transport, provisioning, manufacture, distribution.” She looked at Xinglong. ”And before anybody treats that as the dull one — I held a mountain for sixty days on bolt recovery rates. The war was decided by whether a crossbow shaft could be pulled out of a corpse, cleaned, and fired again. Logistics is not support. Logistics is the war.”

”Cross-training?” Eden asked.

”Rotations every year. A commander does a term in a supply depot. An engineer does a term on a stretcher. Nobody graduates believing their track is the important one.” Jayde paused. ”And the fifth year is not classroom. Fifth year is field — assigned to a real unit doing real work, nests or roads or wall-building, with real consequences. They commission at twenty-one, and they commission having already done the job.”

***

”Instructors,” Xinglong said. ”You are describing a faculty of several hundred that does not exist.”

”It exists. It’s sitting on the Academy grounds waiting on a registrar.”

The room went still.

”The fourteen hundred and three aren’t only the first force,” Jayde said. ”They’re the first faculty. They fought the war the doctrine came out of. Meifen can teach the crossbow line because she was the crossbow line for sixty days. Ruifen can teach holding a position that should not be held. Deng Hao can teach barrier timing to a room full of sixteen-year-olds better than I can, because he counted heartbeats with his palm on an anchor-stone while something dissolved the wall in front of him.”

”They are children themselves,” Heiteng said.

”They’re the most combat-experienced human beings on this continent, and every one of them earned it in eleven months.” Jayde shook her head. ”That is the whole reason the window matters. If they scatter before there is an institution to hold them, the doctrine goes with them, and I am starting from a book.”

***

”And the writing of it,” Eden said. ”Somebody has to put a curriculum on paper. All of it. Nine years of lower school and five of academy, in a world with no textbooks.”

”You and I do,” Jayde said.

Eden looked up.

”You keep handing me this half as though I’m the only one who’s seen it. I sat the same system you did.” Jayde’s mouth moved, not quite a smile. ”Twenty-five years of Federation schooling. A classroom at six, same as the one I’ve just described to you, all the way through to a commission — and then the rest of my life finding out which parts of it were true. I have been taught by better instructors than I will ever be, and I remember exactly how they did it, and between the two of us we have the whole thing — you have the medicine and the sciences and I have the doctrine and the command track, and neither of us has ever built a school and we are going to do it anyway.”

”That is—” Eden stopped. Started again. ”That is the single most useful thing anybody has ever asked me to do, including the time machine. I want that on the record.”

”It is on the record,” Isha said. ”Everything is on the record. That is the entire point of me.”

”Then put this on it too,” Jayde said. ”Every word of it gets written down. Doctrine, technique, curriculum, all of it, in plain language, copied and distributed and taught to anyone who walks through the door. No family secrets. No lineage transmissions. No master who takes the good part to his grave.” She looked at the room. ”That is how this realm has kept knowledge for ten thousand years, and it is why it has none. Write it down, hand it out, and it survives every one of us.”

***

”And the shape it makes,” Yinxin said slowly, ”over forty years. Fifty.”

”Go ahead.”

”A realm in which the ordinary person can read, heal, build, and fight.” The golden eyes had not left the wall. ”A population like that does not stay ruled by twelve families and a temple. It cannot be made to. It will want a say, and it will be in a position to insist.”

”Yes.”

”You are proposing to end clan rule in the Lower Realm.”

”I’m proposing to teach children to read,” Jayde said. ”The rest of it follows on its own, and it should, and it will take longer than any of us wants, and I’m not going to stand here and pretend I don’t know where it goes.” She looked around the room. ”I’m not installing anything. I don’t want a throne, and I’d be bad at it. I want a realm where what happened to me isn’t available to anyone — where a woman gets stoned to death in a village square, and her daughter gets sent to a slavepit, and there is no mechanism anywhere in the world that would have stopped either one.”

The brazier settled. Reiko’s rune had gone very bright against her ankle.

”That is not a strategy,” Green said gently. ”That is a grievance.”

”It’s both,” Jayde said. ”Most true things are.”

***

”And what does Qin get?” Heiteng said. ”You are asking a man to demolish the institution he has spent his life holding together. Idealism will not do it.”

”He gets four things.” Jayde counted them off. ”One — he never sends another cohort down that hole unprepared. Sixteen hundred of mine came out of a war that has never happened before, with no cultivation at all, and I lost a hundred and ninety-seven. Do it properly and the Harrowing stops being a cull of his own students.

”Two — he gets what is actually down there. He knows about the seal. He has known his whole career and so have the four teachers he trusts, and Liwan reads the integrity off an instrument every month. Nobody has ever been able to tell him about the ecology. The castes. The Queen. Why the culls work and what happens on the day they stop.” She paused. ”I have been living in it for a year. That is the one thing on this wall that nobody else in the world can hand him.

”Three — the Temple. He has been building the expulsion file for two years and deliberately losing fights to grow it, and I have already given him the SoulBloom analysis and put my licensing revenue between him and their boycott. This is the next piece of the same campaign. An academy that trains the realm’s officers and engineers and surgeons is not a thing the Temple can walk into and take.”

”And four?”

”He gets to stop being a warden,” Jayde said.

Heiteng was quiet for a moment.

”That will move him,” he said. ”The fourth one. Not the first three.”

***

”That is a great deal of institution,” Xinglong said, ”for a woman with no title, no land, and a rented house.”

”Then we had better get the titles in writing,” Jayde said.
