Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 541: Chapter 536: Her Own Hall

Location:Zhū’kethara, then East

Date/Time:23 Ashwhisper, 9942 AZI — Dark, and After

Realm:Upper Realm

They had the door out of the yard by dark, which was faster than it deserved to be, and by then the coat was back on the rack, folded the way she had folded it, and the count was running again from the top.

Ren put everyone out of the writing room, shut the door, and took the crystal out of the case it lived in.

It warmed slowly, the way it always had. Somewhere under it, a very long way down, something enormous turned over and paid attention.

Brother.

”Cangwei has been in my upper court for two days,” Ren said. ”She left an hour ago.”

The pause that came back was not the pause of a man deciding what to say. It was the pause of a man who had been handed something he had not budgeted for.

What did she do?

”She asked for guest-right by the correct form. She took water and nothing else. She asked me three questions, and she asked them in an order.” Ren put his palm flat on the table. ”She asked whether you were held.”

And you said.

”That you are not.”

Good. A long breath somewhere under a continent. That is true, and it is the only one of the three you could have answered.

”I answered the second as well.”

Which was.

”Whether you are alive.”

Heiteng did not say anything for a while. When he came back, his voice had gone down into the register Ren had heard perhaps four times, and never about a thing that was going well.

She asked in that order on purpose. Ren — that is not a scout my house sent to make enquiries. Cangwei is the one I chose.

Ren took his hand off the table.

”You never said.”

I had not said it to her either, which is the part you may find instructive. Something that was not amusement. There was no arrangement to announce. There was a decision I had made and had not acted on, and then there was this, and I went down.

”Does she know?”

She is the most intelligent creature in my house, and she has been at my shoulder since before either of us had anything worth guarding. Of course she knows. A pause. Which means she did not fly four days to your gate as a member of a house. Nobody sent her. Nobody could have stopped her either.

Ren looked at the drawer where three sheets of paper were sitting.

”She read my cloth.”

Say that again.

”She stood in my lower storehouse and turned a bolt inside out and read the reverse of it, and then she stopped talking, which was worse. She asked whether I had met the weaver. She asked what I was paying.” Ren heard his own voice go flat. ”Brother, what is in my storehouse?”

You are asking me a question I am not able to answer, and you have known that for a year, which is why you have not asked it before.

”I am asking now.”

And the answer is the same one. Heiteng let that stand, and then, more carefully: What did she say about the cloth?

”That she had seen the finish twice in her life. That a house which makes it does not make it in pieces for anybody. That I was being sent a great deal of care.”

Then she has it.

”Has what.”

Ren. Very quiet. My house does not learn silver work. We are born knowing it. Every black dragon carries what our line carried before us, and what our line carried was them — their houses, their rooms, their weaves, everything a bonded caste keeps for the queens it serves. It is why our eyes are that colour. She has never bought a bolt of that cloth in her life, and she could tell you the temperature it was held at.

Ren said nothing.

She will not have said so in your yard.

”She did not.”

No. She will have taken it home and sat with it. And then, with the flat certainty of a man who has known somebody most of his life and has never once had to test the knowledge: That is what she does. She holds a thing until she has all of it. She will be in her own hall by the end of the week, and she will not move until she has more than she has now, and she does not have enough.

”She had enough to fly here.”

She had a brother missing. Now she has a brother alive and not held, which is what she came for. A shift, somewhere far down, of something settling. I will put a letter in the next parcel. Send it on to her house. It will not say where I am, and it will say enough that she stops, and she will stop, because it will be in my hand and she has been waiting a long time for anything in my hand.

”You are certain.”

I am certain of her.

Which, Ren thought afterward, was a different sentence.

***

Ren sat with the crystal going cold in front of him for some while after it went quiet.

Then he folded the six-word sheet in half and put it in the drawer with the other two, because there was still nothing in it worth sending, and went to bed.

Somewhere below him the Vor’kalth did not lie down at all. It stayed where it had been since the wall came down, with its head toward the eastern gate.

***

Cangwei did not think of herself as a suspicious woman and would have been surprised to be called one.

A long service in a house that thought carefully and moved rarely had left her with one useful quality, and it was not cleverness. It was that she could hold a set of facts in her hands without deciding what they meant until they had all arrived, and she had watched better dragons than herself ruin themselves by deciding on the fourth fact instead of the eleventh.

Cangwei went back over them now, in order, at height, with the cold coming up off the cut behind her.

A king who stands an hour and a quarter in a healing wing with nothing in his hands, waiting on a half-human.

A king who answers is he held in less than a breath, and is he alive like a man counting out coin.

And the cloth, which she had read standing in his storehouse with his eyes on her hands, and had put down without saying one word of.

She said it now, at height, to nobody.

There are perhaps four weaves on this world that finish a plain gray twill like that on the reverse. One of them is not a weave at all; it is a temperature, held across bolt after bolt without one bad one in the middle. Her house bought from that house once a generation and thought itself fortunate. She had stood in the room where it was done and had not been permitted to touch anything in it.

A silver queen’s houses. Running a winter for a man who did not know whose they were, which meant nobody had ever sent him a price.

There had not been a silver queen anybody could name in ten thousand years. Not since Xueteng put her Core out in a hall full of elders.

Cangwei flew on for some while without doing anything with that.

Because there was the other thing, and she had held that one for two days across a stone floor and had not let it near her mouth.

Heiteng had told one person before he went and it had not been the council, and it had not been Ren. It had been Moyan, in the low gallery, at an hour when neither of them had any reason to expect a third party on the stair, and there had been one, and she had not been there to listen and had not left when she should have. She had not learned a destination from it. She had learned that he was going somewhere on purpose and telling one man.

The destination she had done herself, the slow way, over every month since.

Her house has eyes in the Upper Realm because her house is of the Upper Realm, and he was not in it. The Mid took longer and cost her two favours she would rather have kept, and he was not in that either — not in the free cities, not in the seats, not on any road a black dragon can be on for that long without one person mentioning it.

There is a third one.

And she had watched a demon king refuse to tell her, and had understood, standing in his upper court, that a man who would not give up a location under that much courtesy would not have let her off that terrace at all if he had known she already had it.

And a black dragon gone down into the Lower Realm and still gone, and not one line home to the five who raised him. Not even to the one he told.

Cangwei turned each one over. Then she looked for the innocent version, because there is always an innocent version, and a person who does not look for it is not thinking; she is hunting.

The innocent version was this: Heiteng had gone down for reasons of his own, had found something worth staying for, and had asked his sworn brother to hold his tongue, and his sworn brother — being the man she had watched in that lower court — was holding it and would go on holding it until his own house burned.

She turned that one over longest, because it was the one she wanted.

And it broke on the same place every time.

Heiteng had lost a brother to a silver queen in chains. Cangwei had been nowhere near that hall, and it had never made the smallest difference to how much of it she carried, because there is no house within reach of that one that does not carry it. And whatever else Heiteng was afterward, he was not a man who would go quiet about anything except the one thing, and not for this long. There was no second matter in the world large enough. There had never been a second matter.

Not held, then. Ren had said it fast because it was true, and a demon does not say a thing that is not.

Which was worse. A dragon who is held can be got out.

East, with the cut going dark under her, she did the last piece of it, and she did it carefully, and it came out as it had come out every time since the storehouse.

Somewhere on the Lower Realm there was a silver queen whose houses were running at full production for humans, and a black dragon who had been beside her the whole of it and would not write home about it, and a demon king who knew, and would not say, and had let his own wall come down rather than let one coat of it out of his gate.

Certainty was not something she had, and she made a point of never having it.

She did the arithmetic on the way down out of the cold, because it was the part nobody in her house would have let her skip.

There is one road left, and the Temple stands on the end of it and counts what comes down. That was the first problem, and it was the small one.

The second is what the road does. A seal gets you through, and the crossing takes its tier off you on the way, and it does not give it back — not with time, not with resources, not by going home again and standing in your own hall for a thousand years. Huifu had gone down with the quintet and had paid it and had never once complained where anybody could hear, and every dragon in the Upper Realm knew exactly what she had been before she went.

Cangwei held that up and looked at it for a long time, at height, in the dark, the way she had held up the cloth.

Then she put it where she had put everything else, which was down, in order, with the rest.

Nobody in her house had sent her to Zhū’kethara, and nobody in her house could call her back from it, because it had never been a house matter, and the two of them had known that a long time without either of them putting it anywhere it could be heard.

She was going to go and look.
