Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 506: Chapter 501: In Daylight

Location:Dragon estate — operations room

Date/Time:5 Frostforge, 9942 AZI

Realm:Lower Realm, Doha

It was fully dark outside, and nobody had left.

”Titles, then,” Jayde said. ”Names on things, in writing, before the end of this month.”

”You are in a hurry,” Heiteng said.

”Everything I’ve said in this room tonight is an argument. Arguments don’t survive the person making them.” She turned from the wall. ”By the end of the month I want three things standing that do. A charter. A school. And a force.”

”Two of those you have discussed at length.”

”The third one is the one that pays for the other two and stops anybody taking them off us,” Jayde said. ”And it has a deadline of about a month, so we do it first.”

***

”Funding,” Yinxin said. ”Before anything else. Because a force with no money is a militia, and a militia is somebody else’s problem within a year.”

”The network. Trade revenue.” Jayde looked at her. ”Not tribute. Not levy. Not a single coin taken off a village that didn’t choose to trade with us. The day it can’t pay for itself is the day it’s too big, and I want that written into the charter as a limit and not a target.”

”That will be a real constraint. Eventually it will hurt.”

”Good.”

”There is a problem you have not raised,” Isha said, ”and I would like it on the record before this room congratulates itself.”

”Go on.”

”Fourteen hundred and three people know how to build a crossbow to your specification. Roughly two hundred understand that fabricator well enough to describe it to a competent smith.” The light was very steady. ”That design is already loose in the world. You cannot recall it. Within three years somebody is selling them, and within ten somebody is pointing them at you.”

”I know.”

”You are not proposing to control it.”

”I can’t. Nobody can. You can’t put a design back into a head.” Jayde shrugged. ”So the answer isn’t control, it’s pace. Whatever they copy, we’re already two designs past it. That’s not comfortable, and it isn’t clever, and it’s the only honest answer there is.”

”I dislike it.”

”So do I. Write it down anyway.”

***

”The eyes,” Jayde said. ”I’ll tell you what we have. Then Eden tells me why I can’t have all of it, which is how the last four days have gone.”

”That is a fair summary,” Eden said.

”The Resolute was a survey vessel before it was anything else. It carried a full system reconnaissance package, and I stripped that ship to its frames and put almost all of it through the fabricator.” Jayde spoke to the room rather than to Eden. ”The package is the one thing I did not touch. Twelve orbital platforms. Five deep-range probes.”

”Seventeen,” Xinglong said.

”Seventeen, and not one of them replaceable, and I would like everybody to hold that number for the next ten minutes.”

”What do they do?”

”A platform goes above a world and stays with it. It steers itself, and it never runs out of the ability to do so — it holds itself up on sunlight and pushes on the star’s own wind, and it will still be doing that when everything in this room is a rumor.” Jayde tilted her head. ”It decides what is worth recording and discards the rest, so we are not drowned in ten thousand hours of empty ocean. It diagnoses its own faults and routes around them. It emits nothing until asked, and when it answers it is a burst two seconds long that nothing on this world could pick out of noise.”

”They think,” Xinglong said.

”Not the way Isha thinks. They judge, inside limits set by whoever tasked them.” A pause. ”But yes. You would find them tiresome to argue with.”

”And the other five?”

”Go out. Built to be thrown at nothing in particular and keep reporting for two centuries.”

Heiteng had not moved for some time.

”I am eighteen thousand years old,” he said. ”I have understood perhaps a third of what you have said since you began.”

”That’s not ignorance,” Jayde said. ”There is nothing on this world to have learned it from. Every school, every text, every master on all three of these planets teaches one framework, and that framework is cultivation. It explains a great deal, and it explains it well, and it is the only one anybody has. Until eleven months ago there were two people on Doha with any other education at all, and both of us got it somewhere else.”

”And now?”

”Now there are about fourteen hundred more with a start on one, sitting on a mountain waiting for a registrar.” She let that sit for a moment. ”Which is most of the reason I am in a hurry.”

***

”Now the part where I take it away from you,” Eden said, and turned the datapad over.

”There are four honest limits on this, and none of them are the ones people expect. The first is that seventeen is seventeen.” She let that sit. ”Nothing about how advanced they are changes the fact that a thing cannot be in two places. Doha is not a village. One platform in a fixed high orbit watches roughly a third of one face of this world and nothing else, permanently. One in a low orbit sees a narrow strip at superb resolution, and then it is over ocean, and you wait ninety minutes to see your province again.”

”How many for this world alone?”

”Six, arranged properly. And that is not everywhere. That is everywhere that matters, most of the time.”

”And she wants three worlds,” Yinxin said.

”She does, and she is right to.” Eden set the pad down. ”They will go to the Mid Realm or the Upper as readily as they will sit over this one. Same sun, same system, nothing in the way. Three above the Mid Realm and every time the Temple lights something up, we watch it happen and know inside a day. Three above the Upper Realm and for the first time ever, somebody down here can watch a war that has been fought on our behalf four times over without anybody once telling us how it was going.”

Heiteng set his bowl down and did not pick it up again.

”Six here. Three and three,” Jayde said. ”That is the twelve.”

***

”The second limit is time,” Eden said, ”and it is the one that will actually hurt you.”

”Go on.”

”A platform is not a ship. It has no drive worth the name — it holds itself up on sunlight and pushes on the star’s wind, which is free and inexhaustible and extremely slow. Excellent for staying somewhere forever. Useless for going anywhere in a hurry.” She looked up. ”Under its own power, moving one between worlds is a season. Possibly two.”

”And with the shuttle?”

”With the shuttle you go and fetch it, and it takes a few days.” Eden let that sit for a beat. ”Which sounds like the answer until you notice what it costs. It costs the hull, and it costs whichever of the two of us is flying it, and it costs however long she is not here doing the other nine things only she can do.”

”So the platforms are not a fleet you redeploy,” Jayde said. ”They are a decision I make once and live inside — and the price of changing my mind is measured in me.”

”Yes.”

Jayde was quiet for a moment.

”Then I’m not allocating sensors,” she said. ”I’m committing them, under uncertainty, and every reversal comes out of the one resource I cannot manufacture.”

”Yes.”

”Which is a thing I know how to do badly.” She almost smiled. ”Six here. One parked on the eastern provinces staring at the nests and comparing today to yesterday. Five distributed so no single face of this world is dark for long. Three and three above the others, spaced so that losing one is an inconvenience and not a blinding. And nothing moves between worlds without this table hearing the argument first, because in six weeks’ time I will want to move one for a stupid reason and I would like somebody in this room to tell me no.”

Eden made a note.

”The third limit,” she said, ”is that I do not know how old they are. Neither does she, and neither does anybody.”

”You can date the design,” Jayde said.

”I can date the design. Not far off my own era — later than yours, near enough to mine that I know what every panel on them does without looking.” Eden turned a hand over. ”How long they sat in that mountain before you walked into it is a different question, and there is no answer to it. The tear did not arrive with a calendar attached. It could be forty years. It could be four hundred. The racks were sealed, and the environment was stable, which is the only reason I am not simply telling you they are all dead.” A pause. ”I am saying seventeen. Plan on fourteen and be pleased if I am wrong.”

”And the fourth is us,” Jayde said, before Eden could. ”Seventeen insertion profiles. Every one right the first time. And there are two people on this planet who can run them.”

”Three weeks if we split it,” Eden said.

”Two if we don’t sleep.”

”Three weeks. I have seen what you produce on no sleep, and so have you.”

”Why two?” Xinglong asked. ”Why not one? Why not twenty?”

”Because we came out of the same schoolhouse.” Eden set the pad down. ”Every GESS soldier is trained in all of it. Engineering, medicine, navigation, ordnance, formations, command — badly, and every subject, until they let you specialize somewhere in your twenties. I took the medical track. She took special operations and then command.” She glanced across the table. ”She is the better engineer of the two of us, which I have made my peace with. I am the better surgeon, which she has not.”

”I’ve made my peace with it.”

”You have not.”

Green made a small sound into her cup.

”There is a consequence in that,” Yinxin said, ”and I do not think either of you has said it.”

”Go on.”

”There are two of you. And in fifteen months one of you intends to stand in front of a nest for forty minutes and be screamed at by eight thousand things.” The golden eyes did not move. ”Every capability in this room that requires a Federation education requires one of two people, and one of the two has made a career of putting herself in front of the worst thing available.”

Nobody said anything for a beat.

”Yes,” Jayde said. ”Which is why nothing goes near a nest until these are up and the profiles are written down in a form somebody else could follow. Nests first was the rule. This is the exception, and it is the only one.”

***

”There is a fifth thing,” Isha said, ”which is not a limit so much as a correction, and I would like it said before this room starts believing it has eyes everywhere.”

”Say it.”

”They see surfaces. That is all any of this does.” The light was very steady. ”They will not see into a nest. They will not see through the seal. They will not tell you what is under a mountain or inside a Temple hall or in a man’s intent. You are buying the ability to watch what a world does on the outside, which is a very great deal more than anybody in this realm has ever had, and it is not omniscience, and the difference between those two will get somebody killed if it is ever forgotten.”

”Noted,” Jayde said. ”Write it into the first page of the tasking doctrine.”

***

”The five,” Heiteng said. ”You have not said what those are for.”

Jayde did not answer immediately.

”Because I don’t know,” she said. ”And that is the largest hole in everything I have told you tonight, so I would rather say it out loud than have somebody find it later.”

She went back to the wall and put her hand flat on nothing at all — on the empty margin past the edge of the map, where there was no paper and no pins.

”I have spent this entire evening saying the gate opens. Like a door, in a wall, in a place, on a date.” She turned around. ”I do not know where. I do not know what a breach physically is, or where in this system it happens. I do not know whether they come from somewhere and arrive, or whether they are simply, suddenly, here. I have been describing an event I cannot locate.”

Nobody filled the silence.

”Isha. Four cycles of records. Does one of them say?”

The light did not move for a moment.

”No. And I went through all of them the day I woke, looking for exactly that, because I assumed I would find it and be able to hand it to you.” A pause. ”Every account begins with them already present. Not one begins earlier. By the time any survivor had the leisure to write, the arrival had already happened — and the people who watched it happen were not among the survivors. Four times. I hold four accounts of an aftermath and not one of a beginning.”

”Ten thousand years,” Green said quietly, ”and nobody has ever seen them come.”

”Nobody has ever seen them come,” Isha agreed, ”and lived to record where from.”

Jayde let that stand.

”So. Five probes. Long-range, one heading each, and out there a heading is close to permanent — not because they cannot steer but because turning something around at that distance costs you years you do not have and puts it somewhere you did not want it.” She held up three fingers. ”Three go out on the widest headings that make any sense at all. Two stay in the rack doing nothing.”

”Why hold two?” Xinglong asked.

”Because at some point in the next seventy years those platforms above the boundary are going to hand me something. A direction. A signature. Something with a bearing on it.” Her hand closed. ”And on that day I want two probes still crated and the ability to point them exactly at the answer, instead of standing in a room like this one wishing I had waited.”

Eden was watching her with an expression Jayde could not entirely read.

”That is the first time tonight,” she said, ”that you have planned for being wrong.”

”I’ve been planning for it all evening. That’s just the first time I’ve used the word.”

***

”There is a question nobody has asked,” Yinxin said.

”Go on.”

”They are above the sky, they steer themselves forever, nothing can reach them, and six of them will be circling other worlds entirely. Excellent.” The golden eyes came up. ”How does what they see get down here?”

”That,” Eden said, ”is the genuinely primitive part, and I want it understood before anybody gets comfortable.”

She put both hands flat on the table.

”People keep asking me how far ahead those platforms are, as though the answer is a number of centuries. It is not. There is no number.” She looked around the table. ”This world never started walking in that direction. It found cultivation instead, and cultivation worked — so nobody ever needed a lens, or a lever, or a way of measuring the sky, or a plough that a person without essence could push. Why would you invent a better tool when the answer to every problem is to become stronger? Four days ago I watched a village woman lift a cart with her hands because that was easier than anyone here ever building a jack.”

”You are describing my entire realm,” Heiteng said.

”I am describing all three of them. And I am not sneering — it is a coherent answer, and it has held a civilization together for—” She stopped. ”I was going to say ten thousand years. I have no idea whether that is remotely close.”

”It is not,” Isha said. ”Cultivation is older than the shattering. It is older than the first time they came. I do not know when it began, and I am the oldest thing in this room, which should tell you what sort of number you are reaching for.”

Eden absorbed that. ”But it means the gap between that platform and this room is not a distance you can measure in years, because nobody here ever set out across it. The single most transformative object anybody on this continent has seen in living memory is her cooking device. A stove. That is the state of the art, and it is the state of the art because she made it eighteen months ago.”

Nobody argued.

”Which brings me to the receiver,” Eden said. ”Because the platforms came off a starship, and something on the ground has to hear them. Fixed installation, clear sky. I can build one out of what this planet has, and it will be ugly, and it will work.”

”No,” Jayde said.

Eden stopped.

”Say that again.”

”We’re not building it.” Jayde came away from the wall. ”And I should have said this four days ago instead of letting you cost it out. It’s my fault you’ve spent two evenings on a thing I was never going to allow.”

”Then explain the objection, because it is not a technical one.”

”It isn’t.” Jayde looked around the table. ”Nothing off those ships goes into a Doha hand. Not a component. Not a schematic. Not one working device that somebody here could take apart on a bench and start copying badly.”

Xinglong’s eyebrows went up.

”You have armed fourteen hundred people out of that fabricator,” he said.

”With crossbows.” Jayde did not flinch from it. ”A crossbow is a lever, a string and a trigger. This world could have built one on any day of its history and didn’t — not because it lacked the wit, but because nobody ever needed to when the answer to every problem was to cultivate harder. I didn’t hand them the future. I shoved them into something they were already standing next to, and every one of those soldiers understands why the thing works, because I made certain they were taught the why and not just the how.”

”And a receiver is different.”

”A receiver is a box nobody on this planet could design, repair, or explain. That’s the difference, and it’s the whole difference.” She put her hand flat on the table. ”Give a world a device it does not understand, and you have not advanced that world. You have made it a client. It stops inventing, because why would anyone bother — and on the day the supply stops, it is worse off than if you had never arrived at all. I have seen it done to three planets and I have never once seen it end well for the planet.”

The room was quiet.

”There is a second half to that,” Isha said, ”and I would like to hear whether you have it.”

”There is.” Jayde nodded. ”Anything I put into Doha’s hands has to be something Doha can maintain, repair, explain, and improve without me. If it fails that test, it stays with us, no matter how badly we want it. And maintain is the easy word in that list. The hard one is improve — because the day this world can improve on something I gave it is the day it stops needing me, and that is the entire objective.”

”So the platforms—”

”Are ours. Mine and Eden’s. Not the Defence Force’s, not the Academy’s, not the network’s, and not anybody’s inheritance.” Her voice did not change. ”We are the only two people who will ever operate them, and when we are finished the whole capability goes into a hole in the ground or into the sun. Doha does not get given a sky. Doha gets to build its own telescope, in its own time, out of its own arithmetic — and it will be worse than this and slower than this, and it will be theirs, and it will still be working in a thousand years because they will understand every part of it.”

Green had been silent for a long while.

”You are giving them the method and keeping the machines,” she said.

”I’m giving them the method and keeping the machines.”

”That is either extremely wise or extremely arrogant.”

”It’s both,” Jayde said. ”I’ve made my peace with that. Ask me again in fifty years.”

***

”Then where does the data go?” Yinxin asked. ”You still have to hear them.”

”The shuttle,” Eden said. She had been sitting with it, and the irritation had gone out of her entirely. ”Of course. The shuttle.”

”Explain.”

”Everything I was going to hand-build on a hillside already exists aboard that hull, built properly, by people who knew what they were doing.” Eden turned her hands over. ”The receiver, the processing, the storage. It is a starship’s flight deck. It will take seventeen feeds at once and never notice the load.”

”And it moves,” Yinxin said, and something in her face eased for the first time in an hour. ”It is not a fixed installation in a province. It is not a building anybody can find, raid, or reverse-engineer. There is nothing to capture, because the only thing that hears them is the one object that can fly away.”

”And nothing gets built on Doha,” Jayde said. ”No permanent structure. No local components. The entire capability lives inside a hull that two people can operate and one person can move.” She looked at Eden. ”Which makes the workshop urgent and makes it the most defended thing we own.”

”The Pavilion,” Isha said.

Everyone looked at the light.

”I have wards that predate this argument by a considerable margin,” Isha said. ”And the entrance hall now accommodates a Charling.”

Jayde’s mouth moved.

”Then we build the workshop where the fox keeps the door,” she said.

”And the launch,” Xinglong said. ”You intend to throw seventeen objects into the sky off a mountainside. Who sees that?”

”Anybody looking at that mountain,” Eden said. ”It is neither quiet nor subtle, and it will not be one night. It will be several.”

”At night, then. Cloud, and the quintet clears the ridge lines for two days either side,” Yinxin said. ”I can make it a very bad fortnight to be within twenty kilometers of that peak without one person understanding why.”

”Then the eastern mountain,” Jayde said. ”The quintet already stages the array work off it. High, warded, nobody climbs it.” She turned back to Eden. ”What do you need from me?”

”A launch frame off the fabricator, three weeks, and nobody speaking to either of us while we run seventeen sets of insertion figures.”

”You’ll have all three.” Jayde paused. ”And the frame comes apart afterward and goes back through the fabricator. All of it. I don’t want a single piece of that assembly left standing on a mountainside for somebody to find in forty years and wonder about.”

Eden made a note without comment.

”You are going to be tiresome about this,” Heiteng observed.

”I’m going to be consistent about it,” Jayde said. ”The first time I make an exception because it’s inconvenient, the rule stops being a rule and becomes a preference, and preferences do not survive seventy years.”

***

”And the other thing in that ring,” Heiteng said. ”You have mentioned a shuttle twice tonight and explained it once, and the explanation was that it moves cargo quickly. I have been watching the pair of you not look at each other since.”

Eden set her cup down very carefully.

”I have been waiting on her,” she said, ”to decide whether this room gets it.”

”This room gets it,” Jayde said.

She turned to face them.

”Every child on this world is taught that Doha was one place and came apart. Nobody argues about it. It is on the first page of every history anybody has ever written.” She let that sit for a beat. ”What nobody ever says is what is in the gap between the pieces. It is not a barrier. It is not a veil. It is distance. Ordinary, empty, crossable distance.”

”The two big moons,” Eden said. ”The ones with continents and oceans on them, that every person on this planet points at on a clear night and calls moons.” She had not raised her voice at all. ”Those are the Mid Realm and the Upper Realm. Same sun. Same orbit. Same year, which is why your calendar works up there. I worked it out in my first winter here, lying in a field, when I was twelve years old and had nobody to tell.”

Nothing moved in the room except the brazier.

Then Yinxin set down her cup, and when she spoke she did not sound like an administrator at all.

”Then you should tell them the rest,” she said, ”because the pair of you are describing that gap as though it were empty. It is not.”

Jayde tipped her head. ”Go ahead.”

”The passages are not roads. Nobody cut them.” The golden eyes had gone somewhere a long way back. ”There is no formation in them. No anchor, no founder, nothing anybody maintains — which is why nobody, in the whole of recorded history and in any of the three realms, has ever managed to make a new one.”

”Then what are they?” Green asked.

”They are her. When Doha came apart, Ala caught the pieces, and she has not let go since.” Yinxin’s voice stayed perfectly even. ”Her strength is the only reason three fragments of a broken world keep the same orbit and the same year instead of drifting off into the dark, one at a time, over ten thousand years. The passages are not roads. They are the places where she is still touching all three at once.”

Green had not moved since the word her.

”And the descent,” Jayde said. ”The bite a Realm Seal takes out of your cultivation coming down here — that is hers too, and it is deliberate. A Blazecrowned who comes into the Lower Realm arrives as something less and stays less, and every power in the Upper Realm has been quietly furious about it for longer than any of them can document.” She looked at Heiteng. ”It is a wall. She built the only wall this realm has ever had, and she built it out of herself, and it is the entire reason the Lower Realm was not simply taken and held a very long time ago.”

”The Temple’s jurisdiction over the Mid Realm passageways,” Xinglong said slowly. ”Sharlin holding every crossing point and calling it security.”

”She does not own the passages. Nobody can. She owns the ground at both ends of them, which turns out to be almost as good.”

***

”There is an implication in that,” Isha said, ”which this room has walked straight past, and I would like it looked at.”

The light came down over the table.

”The passages are closing. We have all been treating that as a calendar event — something that simply happens before an invasion, the way weather happens.” A pause. ”It is not a cycle. It is her failing. They are closing because she is being drained past the point where she can hold them open, and every year those nests feed, the road gets narrower.”

The room went entirely silent.

”So it is not a season,” Yinxin said. ”It is a symptom.”

”It is a symptom. It has always been a symptom, and four times over, this world has watched the road close and called it fate.” The light did not waver. ”Which means the reverse may also be true, and I want it tested and not assumed — that a world spirit who is no longer being eaten might hold that road open considerably longer than anybody expects.”

It took Jayde a moment to answer.

”That changes the value of the nests again.”

”It changes the value of every month,” Isha said.

***

Jayde let the room hold that for a while. Then she went back to the thing they had left lying on the table twenty minutes earlier.

”Which is why the shuttle is not a fast way to cross a continent,” she said.

Heiteng’s head came up.

”Look at what has just been described. Every crossing any living thing has made between these three pieces, since the day they became three pieces, has gone through her. The passages are her. A Realm Seal costs you cultivation because she set that price. Every journey anyone has ever taken between realms has been made with her permission and at her toll.” Jayde’s hand was flat on the map. ”And she is going under.”

Heiteng set the bowl down on the flagstone and did not pick it up again.

Against the door, Xinglong came out of his corner for the first time that night.

”A ship does not ask her,” Jayde said. ”It does not use a passage. It carries no Seal, pays no toll, requests no permission and files with nobody’s Temple. It goes up, it crosses, it comes down — and there is nothing in this system capable of stopping it, or even of noticing that it happened.”

”How long?” Heiteng said. His voice had dropped somewhere below its usual register entirely.

Eden did the arithmetic without needing to look at anything.

”Depending on where the three of them are sitting in their orbits — hours to the Mid Realm. Somewhere around a day to the Upper, and no worse than two at the worst conjunction of the year.”

Heiteng did not say anything at all.

”Hours,” Xinglong said.

”Hours. It is a crewed hull with a drive built to cross between stars. Crossing between three worlds in the same system is the least it will ever be asked to do.” Eden shrugged slightly. ”You could take breakfast here and be over the Mid Realm before the plates were cleared.”

”A courier takes eleven weeks,” Heiteng said, ”and that is with the passages open and a Temple stamp on his papers.”

”Yes.”

”Hours.” A beat. ”And now I am going to take some of that back, because every person in this room has just heard a number out of my mouth and I want it understood what the number is made of.”

”Meaning?”

”I have no instruments. None at all.” Jayde said it flatly. ”I have two eyes, a year of looking up from a mountain I could not leave, and an education in a system that is not this one. There is not a telescope on this planet. There is not an observatory, or an ephemeris, or one recorded measurement of anything in that sky that was taken by somebody trying to measure it rather than worship it.”

”You said hours,” Xinglong said.

”I said hours because it is my best estimate and because a commander who hedges every sentence stops being listened to. Here is what the estimate is actually built on.” She held up a hand and counted it down. ”The three of them share a year — your calendar works up there and always has, which tells me the orbits sit close to one another and tells me almost nothing else. I know how large they look. I do not know how large they are, and without that I cannot turn how large they look into how far away they are. Not properly. Not to a figure I would bet a hull on.”

”So the hours could be—”

”Hours. Or half a week. Or something worse, if the geometry is uglier than I have assumed. The drive is not the uncertainty — the distance is.” Jayde did not soften it at all. ”I have spent four days building a seventy-year plan on arithmetic I did in my head under a mountain, because that arithmetic was the only thing available. Every distance I have quoted tonight, every transit time, every figure about what those platforms can cover — inference. Good inference. Still inference.”

Eden nodded once. ”It is the same for mine. I have been checking her working and agreeing with it, which is not the same as either of us being right.”

”Then the first platform,” Isha said slowly, ”is not only an eye.”

”The first platform is a ruler.” Jayde put her hand flat on the map. ”The moment one of them is up and looking, I stop guessing. Distances, orbits, periods, mass, how far a hull actually has to go and how long it actually takes — real numbers, measured, inside a month. Every plan in this room gets checked against them and some of it is going to be wrong.”

”You are expecting to be wrong,” Heiteng said.

”I’m expecting to find out. That is the entire point.” She looked around the table. ”And I would very much rather find out in a year like this one, while there is still time to be wrong, than in year sixty-nine.”

Heiteng was quiet for a moment.

”That,” he said, ”is the most useful thing you have said tonight.”

Xinglong said something in a language Jayde did not know, quietly, to nobody.

”You came down,” she said to Heiteng. ”All seven of you came down out of the Dragon Domain to a realm that caps at Blazecrowned, and you paid a Realm Seal to do it, and every one of you has been carrying that bill ever since. You have been assuming that going home costs the same again.”

”It does,” Heiteng said.

”It doesn’t. Not with a hull.” Jayde put her hand flat on the map. ”And that is not even the part that matters.”

”Then what is?” Yinxin said. She had not blinked in some time.

”Before every invasion, the passages close, and the Lower Realm gets shut in — while everybody with the standing to leave has already gone up.” Jayde’s voice stayed level, and it was worse for staying level. ”Four cycles. Every one of them depends on this realm being unable to leave and unable to be reached, and every one of them happens because the thing holding the road open is being eaten from underneath.

”A ship does not need her.” She looked around the room. ”That is the part I want everybody to sit with. Whatever happens to Ala, whatever happens to the passages, however far under she goes — a hull and a heading do not care. When the road shuts in seventy years, we will still be able to cross.” A pause. ”That has never once been true in the recorded history of this world.”

The brazier had burned down to almost nothing and nobody got up to see to it.

”How many can it carry?” Xinglong asked.

”Not enough,” Jayde said. ”Not remotely enough, and I want that understood before anybody in this room starts imagining an evacuation. It carries a handful. It is not an ark. It is a door — and we have spent four cycles being a realm that does not have one.”

***

Green spoke for the first time in a long while.

”Hours to the Mid Realm,” she said.

”Yes.”

”That is where they take them.”

Nobody moved.

”Yes,” Jayde said. ”And not yet.”

”I did not ask.”

”You were about to.”

”I was about to.” Green’s fractured eyes did not leave her. ”Give me the reason and I will stop.”

”Because we have one hull and two people who can fly it, and the moment something comes out of the Mid Realm that the Temple cannot account for, they know a capability exists that they have not catalogued — and they start looking for it.” Jayde’s voice was flat, and unhappy with itself. ”Right now they think this realm is a cupboard with no lock on it. The day they learn otherwise, every route Suki mapped changes, every holding site moves, and every child we have not reached yet becomes harder to reach instead of easier. I would trade a great deal for the ones I could carry out this month. I will not trade the ones I have not found.”

”So we wait.”

”So we learn the whole system first. And then we take all of them, in one night, and after that it does not matter what the Temple works out.”

”How long?”

”Years. I don’t know how many.”

Green was quiet for a moment.

”Then I am going to ask you this question again,” she said. ”Regularly. Every time it looks as though you have grown comfortable.”

”Good,” Jayde said. ”Do that.”

***

Eden had not said anything for some minutes.

”Then I want to change one of my answers,” she said.

Jayde turned.

”The platforms. I told you they emit nothing.” Eden was looking at the map without appearing to see it. ”That is a setting. Not a limit. The hardware transmits perfectly well — it was built to talk to a fleet spread across a system.”

”Meaning?”

”Meaning I have been sitting here doing the same arithmetic you all just did, one step further along, and I do not like where it comes out.” She looked up. ”Every message that has ever crossed between these three realms has gone through her as well. Couriers through the passages. Whatever crystal channel he uses to reach the demon realm—” a nod at Heiteng ”—all of it leans on the same thing you have just told me is dying.”

The room understood it before she finished.

”When she goes under, and the road closes,” Eden said, ”this realm does not only stop being able to leave. It stops being able to hear. Four cycles of that, and nobody has ever recorded it, because there was nobody left up here to write it down and nobody down here able to ask.”

”Unless,” Heiteng said. His voice had gone very low.

”Unless there is something in the sky between three planets that does not care about her at all.” Eden’s hands had gone still on the table. ”Six platforms above three different worlds, and three of them already sitting where the traffic would have to pass. Reconfigure those three as relays, and you have a channel between the Lower, Mid and Upper Realms that runs on line of sight and physics and nothing else. No passage. No Temple. Nobody’s permission. It works whether she is awake or asleep, and it works on the day the gate opens.”

Nobody spoke.

”What does it cost?” Jayde said.

”Their invisibility.” Eden did not soften it at all. ”A relay is a thing that talks. Regularly, in both directions, at power. As of tonight, all seventeen of those things are silent objects that nothing in this system could find even if it knew to look. The moment I turn two of them into a switchboard, they become the loudest artificial thing between here and the sun.”

”And the enemy has been patient and precise for nine thousand nine hundred years,” Isha said.

”I would not assume they cannot hear,” Eden agreed.

Jayde looked at the map for a long moment.

”Build it,” she said. ”And leave it dark.”

Eden’s eyebrows went up.

”You want a capability you never use.”

”I want a capability I use once. On the day being heard costs less than being deaf.” Jayde’s hand was flat on the eastern provinces. ”Every relay function built, tested, and switched off. Nobody transmits so much as a syllable through it while the passages still hold — we use Isha’s arrays down here and the crystal to the Upper Realm and we behave exactly as though the sky is empty.” She looked at Heiteng. ”And when the road shuts, and every other realm in this system assumes the Lower Realm has gone dark and stopped mattering the way it has four times before, we turn it on.”

Heiteng was silent for a while.

”They will believe we are gone,” he said.

”They’ll believe we’re gone,” Jayde agreed. ”And then we’ll call.”

***

”Then the force,” Jayde said, ”and then we can all go to bed.”

She went back to the wall.

”Qin first, and fast. Inside the week. Everything I am about to describe depends on there being a charter to hang it from, and I am not standing in front of fourteen hundred soldiers offering them something I have not secured.”

”And then you go to them,” Green said.

”Then I go to them. In person. Not through Meifen, not through the company commanders, not by notice on a wall.” Jayde’s hand rested flat on the eastern provinces. ”I stand in front of them, and I tell them exactly what it is, exactly what it costs, and I let every single one of them say no.”

”And what is it,” Heiteng said, ”when they ask you for its name?”

”The Doha Defence Force.”

***

Nobody spoke for a moment.

”You have named it for a world,” Heiteng said, ”and you have fourteen hundred people, a rented house, and a courtyard.”

”Yes.”

”You are aware that is what you have done.”

”I named it for what it has to become. Name it for what it is tonight, and that is all it will ever be.” Jayde did not look away from him. ”The Lower Realm is where it stands. Doha is what it’s for.”

Xinglong had not sat back down.

”A clan,” he said. ”A sect. A kingdom. A crown. Those are the only four things an armed force on this world has ever belonged to.”

”It belongs to none of them.”

”Then it belongs to you, which is the fifth thing. And the fifth thing has a name in every language I have ever learned, and the name is warlord.”

He said it without heat. He had run mercenary companies for a very long time. It was a professional observation, and everyone in the room heard it as one.

”Keep going,” Jayde said.

”An armed force with no sovereign answers to whoever happens to be standing in front of it. That is not an insult to you — it is a structural fact about armies, and it has been true on this continent since before that Academy was cut into the mountain.” Xinglong shrugged. ”Tonight it answers to you, and you are a woman who builds caskets for her dead. In forty years it answers to somebody else, and that somebody is not in this room and has not been born.”

”Correct,” Jayde said. ”Which is why it doesn’t answer to me.”

”Then to whom?”

”To the ground, and the people standing on it.”

The room was quiet.

”Not to a throne. Not to a clan, a sect, a temple, or a name.” She put her hand on the map — on the pins, on the villages, on the empty western half of the board. ”It defends this realm, and it takes no side in any quarrel between the powers inside it. It collects no tax. It holds no territory. It seats nobody. The moment it does any of those things it becomes exactly what you just described, and it should be broken up, and I want that in the first line of the oath where every recruit has to say it out loud.”

”And command?”

”Mine. Until there is a structure capable of holding it. Then the structure takes it and I sign it over — and that goes into the founding oath from the first day, so that every person who swears it knows precisely what they are swearing to and what happens to me if I break it.” Jayde looked at him. ”You saw the flaw. You draft that clause.”

Xinglong regarded her for a long moment.

”That is either the most naive thing I have heard in a very long life,” he said, ”or the first honest answer anybody has ever given me to that question.”

”It’s both,” Green said. ”That’s usually how it goes.”

***

”And the ones who say no?” Yinxin asked.

”Go home with everything they carried out of that mountain. Their pay, their gear, their name on the record, and my hand.” Jayde’s voice was flat. ”No condition. No debt. Nobody asks them a second time.”

”Some of them will go home and talk.”

”Most of them will go home and talk. They are people, they went through something enormous, and it will be a brother first, then a village, then a province.” Jayde shook her head. ”And I am not going to ask fourteen hundred people who spent a year keeping the world from ending to be quiet about it. The Academy is going to send each of those families a name, a date, and a line about honorable service, the way it has for a thousand years. If our people say nothing, then that is the only version that exists.”

”And if they do not stay silent?”

”Then a hundred and ninety-seven families find out what their children actually did. And a few hundred villages find out that the Harrowing is not a rite of passage.” She looked at Yinxin. ”Don’t manage them. Don’t recruit them. Don’t put a single name on your ledger. Let them live in their own villages and say whatever they like.”

Yinxin studied her.

”You understand that will do more damage to that Academy in five years than anything the two of us could design.”

”Yes.”

”And that it cannot be recalled once it starts.”

”Yes.”

”Good,” Yinxin said, and turned back to the board. ”Then I shall do nothing whatsoever, extremely deliberately, and at considerable effort.”

***

Jayde stood at the wall and set the order out loud, because saying a thing in front of witnesses was the closest she had to signing it.

”Nests first, always, because that is the only clock on this wall we did not set. The three breaching ones before they surface, and then we do not stop until all eighty-nine are gone, because every month we take is a month Ala does not get back.

”Qin inside the week. The cohort inside the month, before they scatter.

”Probes on the eastern mountain in parallel — Eden does not need me for that. The network doubles west over three months, and it starts being built to survive being looked at.

”And the schools open the moment Qin will let them, because they are the only item on this wall that gives us nothing at all for fifteen years, and the people they are for have not been born.”

She turned around.

”Seventy years, give or take, and the estimate is soft in both directions. When it comes, the doors will already be shut, the houses will already be gone, and the thing under our feet will have spent nine thousand nine hundred years making certain that Ala cannot wake up to help us.” Her hand went flat on the wall. ”That is the machine. It has run four times and no part of it has ever failed. We are going to take it apart one piece at a time, in daylight, with our names on the paperwork.”

”And if it works?” Yinxin said.

”Then in seventy years this is the first turn of that cycle where the Lower Realm is still standing at the end of it.” Jayde looked at the map. ”And the houses come home to a realm that doesn’t need them.”

”That is a great deal of work,” Xinglong said.

”Fifteen months to the first nest. Five years to the dragons. Seventy to the gate.” Jayde pushed off the wall. ”So we start today.”

Behind her, Yinxin was already reaching for the empty western half of the board.

”Then I will need more pins,” she said.
