This Doctor Is Too Wealthy

Du Heng bit his lip in silence for a moment, suddenly remembering Secretary Huang had called him to a meeting that morning. A moment later, he chuckled. ”Alright, go and mind your own business. You don’t need to worry about this.”

What could it be?

After Wu Buwei left, Du Heng sat in his office, deep in contemplation.

However, no matter how much he thought about it, he couldn’t remember getting into any trouble recently. If he hadn’t done anything wrong, could he be getting promoted?

Du Heng suddenly laughed again.

He found this sudden thought to be ridiculous and impractical. Having been transferred to the Municipal Maternal and Child Health Hospital from the Health Clinic just six months ago, there was simply no way for him to be promoted yet. Even a lateral move would be unlikely. Personnel changes wouldn’t occur so frequently in an institution like this, especially when two major projects were ongoing. As for what it was really about, he decided to just let it be for now. He refused to believe that, in his current position, anyone could just mess with him or target him as they pleased.

With his mind clear, Du Heng decided not to dwell on the situation any longer. He grabbed his car keys and prepared to pick Wu Shengnan up from the Criminal Police Brigade.

”Hop in, I’m taking you out for a nice meal today.” Seeing Wu Shengnan step out of the detachment’s gates, Du Heng eagerly went to open the car door for her.

However, Wu Shengnan wasn’t in high spirits that day. She seemed disinterested in Du Heng’s offer and appeared drained. ”Nevermind, I’m feeling a bit tired today. Let’s just make something simple at home.”

Once they were both seated in the car, Du Heng immediately asked, ”Are you feeling unwell?”

”A little.”

”Oh, I initially thought you were just tired from working all day. Tell me, what’s bothering you?”

Wu Shengnan pouted aggrievedly and said, ”Normally, I don’t mind much when people smoke in the office. But today, for some reason, I feel nauseous whenever I smell smoke. Even the faint smell of smoke on my colleagues makes me incredibly sick.”

”Also, my sense of smell has been strangely sensitive. Before, I couldn’t detect the scent of smoke even when someone was smoking right in front of me. But today, I can smell the smoke on them even when they are quite far away.”

”Is there any other discomfort?” Du Heng asked cautiously.

”No more.” Wu Shengnan maintained her aggrieved expression. ”But I’m really tired today. I don’t want to do anything at all; I just want to lie down.”

Du Heng let out a small sigh of relief and said, ”Come, let me take your pulse. Your husband diagnoses people all day long but has never checked you. Today, you’ll get to see just how skilled your husband is.”

Taking Wu Shengnan’s wrist, Du Heng began to read her pulse in the car. Wu Shengnan lazily reclined in the passenger seat.

After a simple pulse diagnosis, Du Heng knew what was going on.

Holding Wu Shengnan’s hand, Du Heng said softly, ”This is normal; you’re pregnant. Your body’s various functions are stimulated, making them more sensitive. You’ve also been a bit tired these past few days. Don’t worry. Rest well for a couple of days. After the first trimester, things will gradually improve.”

Wu Shengnan pouted and mumbled plaintively, ”It’s still more than a month away. It feels like such a long time.”

Du Heng softly patted the back of her hand, then released it as he prepared to drive home. He chuckled and said, ”You’re much better off, you know. At our hospital, we’ve even seen women who were still throwing up the day before they were due to give birth. Imagine, throwing up for over nine whole months! Who could you even complain to about that?”

Wu Shengnan looked at Du Heng and asked, ”Are you that sure I’ll be through it in three months?”

Du Heng replied confidently, ”Absolutely! There’s a very high probability you’ll get through it. Besides, even if you don’t, your husband is still here, right? I’ll definitely find a way to help you.”

”Would it require taking medicine?”

”During pregnancy, it’s best to take as little medicine as possible. Regardless of whether it’s Chinese herbal medicine or Western medicine, avoid it if you can. So, acupuncture and massage are the best methods.”

”That’s good.” Wu Shengnan straightened up. ”Let’s go home.”

”Alright then, let’s go home. Making you something delicious at home is just as good.” Du Heng started the car cheerfully. ”Oh, by the way, take a half-day off tomorrow morning. I’ll go with you for your prenatal examination.”

”Do we really have to?” Wu Shengnan showed significant reluctance regarding prenatal examinations. ”You’re here, so why go through all that trouble?”

As Du Heng cautiously drove the car onto the road and merged into the traffic flow, he finally said, ”It’s not the same thing.”

”How is it different? Don’t tell me you lack faith in your own abilities?”

To Wu Shengnan’s provocation, Du Heng simply smiled faintly and said, ”My skills are definitely up to par; I can certainly guarantee your health and safety. However, the baby is in your belly right now, and I can’t see him. All I can do is ensure he’s born smoothly and safely. As for how he’s growing in there, whether his limbs are developing properly, and things like that—I can’t tell that just from feeling your pulse.”

Du Heng paused before continuing, ”The purpose of prenatal examinations is to detect and prevent congenital physical abnormalities or other issues early on, thus avoiding a joyous occasion turning into a tragedy after the child is born. For example, if it turns out to be something like an extra digit or a cleft lip, we can treat it after birth. But what if it’s a condition like hydrocephalus, anencephaly, or spina bifida, which cannot be corrected afterwards? The arrival of such a child wouldn’t be a joyous addition to the family, but the arrival of a nightmare.”
