This Doctor Is Too Wealthy

Those who had been fired? No way. The Municipal Bureau wouldn’t care about their grievances. Besides, those who had been fired would probably run at the sight of Du Heng; how would they dare provoke him intentionally? So, it must be a patient, right? That shouldn’t be the case either. Given Du Heng’s capability and his medical records from this period, there shouldn’t be any issues.

Secretary Huang was now quite bewildered and torn. He didn’t know exactly what Du Heng was being reported for. Although both departments had called him in, their questions lacked specific focus, covering both private and work-related matters. It was precisely this broad line of questioning that left him puzzled as to who had made the report and what it was about. If they had asked more specific questions, he would surely have found some clues.

The dilemma lay in whether or not to inform Du Heng about this matter. As a colleague, and one who had benefited from their association, he felt he should certainly inform Du Heng. However, Director Chen and his team had instructed them not to discuss today’s events with others, especially not with Du Heng, which put him in a difficult position. Secretary Huang truly didn’t know what to do. If I don’t tell him, it’ll weigh on my conscience. But if I do, it might affect my upcoming work transfer. What a dilemma.

He wasn’t the only one in a dilemma; so were the Municipal Bureau staff who had just questioned him.

”Chen, how’s your side?” In the office of the Supervisory Division, two men were puffing away, chatting with their legs crossed amidst a haze of smoke.

The man being questioned, who sat behind his desk, heard the question and replied slowly, ”Secretary Huang, whom we questioned today, was the last one. The answers we received were all largely the same. Moreover, this matter had detailed treatment records, indicating it had little to do with Du Heng or the Municipal Maternal and Child Health Hospital.”

”The improper use of large doses of medication, leading to death, was also recorded in detail,” the man on the sofa immediately retorted.

”Yes, large doses of medication were used. However, whether it was truly improper isn’t for just anyone to judge. The key is that the hospital communicated with the patient’s family, and they agreed to this.” Chen took a heavy puff on his cigarette. ”As for the claim that the medication caused the death, that’s baseless. Yes, the patient died, but can we be sure it was due to a medication overdose? That’s uncertain, right? Moreover, so far, there was only a written report, and the complainant has refused an autopsy. The evidence is insufficient.”

The man on the sofa refused to let it go. ”But Du Heng did indeed violate procedure by administering the medication before the family signed the consent.”

”So what?” Chen expertly extinguished his cigarette stub, took a sip of tea, and then said, ”Du Heng has a precedent for using large doses of medication in emergency rescues. With his proven success rate, who would dare say he couldn’t use large doses? In all of Jinzhou, which practitioner of traditional Chinese medicine would dare claim Du Heng used the wrong medication? Without expert testimony to the contrary, it was at most a procedural error, not a major issue.”

”Aren’t you afraid he’ll continue to cause trouble? What if it reaches the higher-up leaders?”

”Let him. He’s just a heartless scoundrel.” Chen’s expression darkened. ”It matters even less if it reaches the leaders. Right now, Du Heng is handling two big projects that even provincial hospitals are envious of. Our standing in the provincial system this year will depend on Du Heng. There’s no way the leaders would remove him. You’re overthinking it.”

Chen then shook his head with a wry smile. Someone like Du Heng is really difficult to handle. He then asked the man on the sofa, ”Alright, Liu, enough about my side. What about your situation?”

Hearing Chen’s sudden question, Liu on the sofa gave a bitter smile. ”It’s the same old story here. We received a complaint letter, so we’re just following protocol. Let’s not talk about it; it’s too frustrating.”

”Coming back from vacation to this is indeed frustrating.” Chen suddenly laughed. ”This person must really hate Du Heng to stir up trouble even during the National Day holiday.”

”Who knows,” Liu replied listlessly.

Seeing Liu’s reluctance, Chen grew eager to see him flustered. ”Come on, don’t hold back. Tell me, how is your side planning to handle it?”

”Handle my ass!” Liu cursed outright. ”Du Heng’s income is on record with us. He earns tens of millions a year legitimately; why would he care about a few hundred thousand? He has legitimate channels to earn money; why would he need to use wedding gifts as a source of bribery? I just don’t get it. Is the person who reported this out of their mind?”

Seeing Liu’s agitated state, Chen chuckled. ”But since someone made a report, don’t you have to investigate? Otherwise, it’ll be hard to justify.”

”Investigate my ass!” Liu cursed again. ”You make it sound easy. How do I investigate? I’ve already inquired about Du Heng’s wedding. Various deans and directors from our medical system attended, and even leaders from our own workplace were there. How am I supposed to investigate? Also, do you know who Du Heng’s wife is? She’s Secretary Wu’s daughter! Even more high-ranking leaders attended that wedding. Me, investigate? Am I crazy or something? Don’t let me find out which bastard saddled me with this. If I find out who it is, I’ll throttle him.”

Liu was so angry he uncrossed his legs and said furiously, ”And they had the gall to put the report right on the Bureau Chief’s desk! Why didn’t they just send it to the Capital? This is preposterous!”

”So, what do you plan to do?”

”Let it be.” Liu stood up, patted down his clothes, and headed straight for the door. ”Since you’re planning to stall, I’ll stall too. I doubt the Bureau Chief will press me for results.”

Chen was undoubtedly pleased with this answer; two carrying a load is always better than one.

”By the way, should we call Du Heng over for a chat?”

”If you want to call him, you do it. I won’t. Let’s just pretend this never happened.”

”But what if those people I questioned let something slip?” Chen mumbled, smacking his lips. ”Wouldn’t that make Du Heng hold a grudge against us? Maybe we should still talk to him.”

”If you want to talk to him, you do it. I’ve got nothing to discuss with him.”

Liu didn’t linger, opening the door and leaving directly.

This left Chen in a bind. Should I talk to him? See what he has to say?

Chen began to weigh his options, especially considering Du Heng’s network.

Du Heng was unaware of all this. After finishing his outpatient service in the morning, he spent the afternoon with the stroke team. He was there for no other reason than to help the doctors on the stroke team revise their papers. Was he revising the main body of the papers? Of course not, just the framework. At the current pace, it was doubtful whether even the first draft would be ready by the end of the year.

As Du Heng prepared to leave work, Wu Buwei quietly caught up to him.

”What are you doing, sneaking around like that?” Du Heng asked, puzzled by Wu Buwei’s stealthy demeanor.

Wu Buwei straightened up but still moved closer to Du Heng, then whispered, ”Brother, I have something to tell you.”

”If you have something to say, just say it. Why be so furtive?”

Ignoring Du Heng’s teasing, Wu Buwei continued in a hushed tone, ”Yesterday afternoon, while I was on duty, I was summoned by the Bureau for questioning.”

”So? What’s that got to do with me?”

”They were asking about you.” Wu Buwei stared intently at Du Heng.

Du Heng paused, surprised but not nervous, just puzzled. ”Asking about me? What about me?”

”I’m not sure. They asked about everything, down to the smallest details, so I don’t know exactly what it was about.” Wu Buwei glanced around again. ”They told me not to tell you. I was going to text you last night, but I figured it would be better to tell you in person. Brother, maybe you should try to find out what’s going on?”
