This Doctor Is Too Wealthy

As soon as these two finished speaking, three or four people nearby immediately voiced their support, forming a stark contrast with the three silent old men sitting opposite them.

The patient on the sofa struggled to sit up and slowly asked, ”If I follow your methods, can I recover my health?”

The individuals who had just spoken all fell silent for a moment. Finally, Professor Wang, who had spoken first, continued, ”There will be a chance.”

”How much of a chance? And what exactly do you mean by ’healthy’?”

Once again, the patient’s questions silenced everyone. After exchanging glances, a person beside Professor Wang spoke up, ”We can’t say for sure what the chances are. It depends not only on the treatment’s effectiveness but also on your own ability to recover. However, one thing we can confirm is that there is an over eighty percent chance of slowing the disease’s progression and buying time for the transplant surgery.”

As the expert finished speaking, the patient revealed that strange, seemingly smiling expression again. ”Transplant? Is a donor easy to find? Even if a donor is found, what’s the probability of a perfect match? Also, what’s the probability of a relapse after the transplant?”

The patient spoke slowly but very seriously. ”When I was first diagnosed, you rejected the suggestion of surgical removal. That told me the location of my illness is very problematic, making surgery impossible. So, what actual help would a transplant be for me? If it’s just a gamble, I’d rather refuse the surgery; it’s too painful. In the final stage of my life, I don’t want to endure both the torment of this disease and man-made suffering. If you can’t give me a clear answer, I think conservative treatment would be better. At least it won’t leave me in such a wretched state and will allow me to retain some dignity. Besides, all my life, I’ve cared most about my image and face. If I listen to you, go through hell, end up miserable and it’s all for nothing, my old friends will laugh at me. I’d lose face in front of them.”

This was almost a direct denial of the suggestions from Professor Wang and the others, yet they could not answer the patient’s questions. Although chemotherapy does prolong a patient’s life, it remains a matter of probability.

Moreover, once chemotherapy begins, it cannot be stopped. It doesn’t just affect cancer cells; it affects normal, healthy cells too. This causes significant damage to the body and can lead to serious complications. Chemotherapy offers no help for the patient’s current work or life.

For a moment, everyone’s gaze turned to the three individuals who hadn’t spoken yet. These were the three traditional Chinese medicine experts on the panel.

However, when everyone, including the patient, focused their gaze on them, they all lowered their heads.

They were genuinely out of ideas. For liver cancer, they had tried every common and uncommon treatment method available. Yet, not only was there no visible improvement, but the patient’s condition had instead entered a phase of rapid deterioration. They were now completely out of options and even felt a touch of guilt.

Seeing them all silent, Wu Shengnan’s father said to the patient, ”Mr. Bai, I’ve brought my son-in-law today. He’s also a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner and has made some headway in treating cancer. Why not let him take a look at you?”

As Wu Shengnan’s father finished speaking, the patient on the sofa slowly turned his gaze to Du Heng. ”So, Wu, this is your son-in-law, eh? I’ve heard of him. They say he’s a rare young talent. Looking at him now, his presence and demeanor, it seems what people said was true. Wu, did you use the same discerning eye you employ for picking people at work when you chose a son-in-law?”

Wu Shengnan’s father shook his head helplessly. ”Still joking at a time like this.”

”I’ve been carefree my whole life. Putting on a long face and feigning sorrow now? That’s not my style.”

”Alright, let’s not dwell on other things. Shall I have my son-in-law take a look at you?”

”Sure. I’ve long heard of your son-in-law’s reputation. This is a perfect chance for me to see it for myself.”

Wu Shengnan’s father breathed a sigh of relief and was about to beckon Du Heng forward when Professor Wang, who had spoken earlier, suddenly interjected, ”Secretary Wu, I hope you don’t mind me interrupting.”

The sudden interruption didn’t seem to displease Wu Shengnan’s father. He simply turned his head and said softly, ”It’s alright, Professor Wang. Please, go ahead.”

Professor Wang cleared his throat. ”I’m curious, which young talent is your son-in-law? Could you introduce us?”

Although it was a question, Professor Wang’s eyes kept darting towards Du Heng.

Wu Shengnan’s father was an exceptionally shrewd man. The moment Professor Wang opened his mouth, he knew what kind of question was coming, so he wasn’t surprised in the slightest when he heard it. He simply beckoned to Du Heng.

”Call him Mr. Bai.”

”Hello, Mr. Bai,” Du Heng greeted politely.

”Hello, young man.”

After Du Heng and Mr. Bai had exchanged greetings, Wu Shengnan’s father then introduced Du Heng to Professor Wang and the others. ”This is Du Heng, the Dean of the Municipal Maternal and Child Health Hospital.”

Du Heng?
