Chapter 187: Chapter 187: Shadow

A series of whispers, sometimes loud, sometimes soft, sometimes distant, sometimes near, echoed in Zhu Wenwu’s ears. It sounded like singing, yet also like a plea, making one’s mind chaotic, as if flooded with a large amount of information, though in reality, it wasn’t.

Under the dark sky stood a colossal figure, the same one he saw at the gathering place, but its image appeared more distinct in this world.

It stood with its head lowered, covered in a thick layer of hair, seemingly pondering something, appearing as tall as the moon.

Zhu Wenwu did not calm down and said, ”Brother Su, I see that giant creature here; its image is clearer.”

Saying this, he fell to the ground, clutching his head in torment, feeling as if a thousand steel needles were piercing his skull, revealing a painful expression.

Su Changxing thought for a moment and said, ”Don’t stare at it. This thing is beyond imagination.”

Over ten minutes later, Zhu Wenwu staggered to his feet, his shoes scraping over the gravel-strewn ground, making a noise.

This world was cold, around one or two degrees, yet he didn’t feel too chilly. Instead, a warmth flowed through his body.

Zhu Wenwu asked softly, ”I’m beside a ruined building. What should I do now? Should I go in and have a look?”

In this situation, he felt lost and unsure of what to do; he could ask Su Changxing for advice, as survival was naturally preferable.

Su Changxing immediately said, ”Since you haven’t encountered any monsters yet, maintain your status; perhaps your position is quite safe.”

Zhu Wenwu nodded, holding his weapon, half-squatting by the wall, observing his surroundings.

”Help, help.”

The screams broke the silence.

Zhu Wenwu paused and said, ”I think I saw Geng Wanchun. He’s nearby, trying to escape.”

Su Changxing glanced at Geng Wanchun and noticed he was in a running posture, but didn’t seem to be moving much.

Suddenly.

Zhu Wenwu cursed loudly, saying, ”Damn it, this fellow is running over to me. Didn’t he say he was going to end himself before?”

A wobbling figure, about three meters tall and wielding a stick, followed behind Geng Wanchun, matching his speed.

Rather than matching his speed, it seemed like the thing was toying with Geng Wanchun.

Geng Wanchun recognized Zhu Wenwu immediately, shouting, ”Zhu Wenwu, help, help.”

Zhu Wenwu turned and ran, saying, ”Weren’t you going to finish yourself? Why are you running over to trouble me then?”

Geng Wanchun, with a sobbing tone, said, ”I wanted to, but I can’t bring myself to do it.”

A monster followed behind him, forcing him to keep running, but his energy drained quickly, pushing him to the brink of collapse.

Zhu Wenwu noticed the figure behind Geng Wanchun solidifying, making sounds as it ran. Upon closer inspection, the figure resembled Geng Wanchun in stature, but much larger, even the weapon in its hand looked similar.

Could it be Geng Wanchun’s shadow?

He hurriedly said, ”Brother Su, the one chasing Geng Wanchun appears to be his shadow.”

Zhou An was startled and said, ”Isn’t it normal for a shadow to follow a person?”

Zhu Wenwu almost spat blood and explained, ”That shadow has turned into a monster, a humanoid monster, chasing Geng Wanchun.”

Su Changxing immediately said, ”Try attacking that shadow. Constant running won’t work; since it’s chasing Geng Wanchun, it probably won’t mind you.”

Upon hearing this, Zhu Wenwu didn’t hesitate and turned to slash at the monster, precisely as Su Changxing had said; the monster paid him no attention.

As if slicing through air, without any resistance.

However, Zhu Wenwu noticed the shadow seemed to fade, halting its steps and gazing at Zhu Wenwu, its form beginning to change, transforming into Zhu Wenwu’s appearance, wielding a saber.

Geng Wanchun also paused, hesitated for a moment, and showed a struggling expression, then swung his stick at the monster’s back.

The stick passed through the monster’s body, causing it to fade again.

The weapon in Zhu Wenwu’s hand was struck away by the monster, forcing him to retreat repeatedly. This monster’s power was beyond imagination, far from something he could contend with.

The monster didn’t pursue Zhu Wenwu but instead shifted its focus to Geng Wanchun behind him.

Zhu Wenwu fell to the ground, grasping the reality that this monster would prioritize the person attacking it as its enemy.

He picked up the fallen steel saber and charged at the monster again, slicing through its body.

By now, Geng Wanchun was cornered, staring blankly at the dark stick paused above his forehead, sensing death was only a step away.

Only when death was near did he realize how much he feared dying and how wonderful it was to be alive.

Zhu Wenwu’s attack caused the monster to halt its assault.

Without thinking, Geng Wanchun turned and fled, only concerned with distancing himself from danger, leaving Zhu Wenwu alone to face the monster.

Watching Geng Wanchun run away left Zhu Wenwu dumbfounded; they clearly could handle this monster together, at least theoretically.

He had no choice but to turn and flee, unable to deal with the monster alone.

Feeling the monster approaching step by step, he speeded up, prompting the monster to increase its speed too, its body gradually solidifying again.

Su Changxing asserted, ”Fight it; you’ll surely die if you continue like this.”

Based on Zhu Wenwu’s description, the monster’s speed wasn’t fast, but its power was immense, and it didn’t attack those running.

Continuing like this would certainly lead to death.

Zhu Wenwu knew this truth, but his body wouldn’t stop—halting meant facing death imminently.

Su Changxing remained silent; saying more at this time was useless, turning to look at Shen Jinxuan, who furrowed her brows.

Shen Jinxuan felt Su Changxing’s gaze and understood, shaking her head and saying, ”No.”

Her ability had been verified several times, indeed predicting people’s death, sometimes accurate, sometimes not, but those she determined as doomed indeed died.

Zhu Wenwu arrived at a turning point, a building appearing ahead, having seen no one on his run, with half his energy spent.

Now was the last chance.

He gritted his teeth, kicked off the wall, and turned back to slash at the monster; the speed was not fast, and the monster lifted its blade to slash at him simultaneously, with a speed similar to his.

Their blades nearly struck each other simultaneously, but Zhu Wenwu was slightly quicker.

At the moment Zhu Wenwu’s blade contacted the shadow monster, the shadow faded again, abruptly dispersing into some black streamers.

Zhu Wenwu fell onto the ground, a shallow cut on his shoulder seeping blood.

”Pretty lucky, huh.”
