Reborn One Week Before the Apocalypse

Chapter 424: Chapter 414: A Bodhisattva’s Heart

Tang Mo could understand why the nanny wouldn’t want to keep working in this environment. But couldn’t she have at least left some of the food? Taking all of it... wasn’t that just driving the mother and her two children to their deaths?

Tang Mo shook her head. That poor mother. She probably didn’t have much experience raising children, and now she had to care for two of them with no food. One could only imagine how difficult it must be.

[Housekeeper Zhang]: To think there are people like that! What is the world coming to? Can any of our residents help?

A mother with two children would need quite a lot, and this crisis wasn’t going to be over in a day or two.

It would take a huge amount of food for one person to help, but if a few families pitched in, it might not be so difficult.

But the group chat fell silent. No one said a word.

[Wen Qianli]: I understand things are difficult for everyone. If it’s convenient, even if you don’t have food, could you give me some fever medicine? My daughter is sick, and we have no medicine at home. I really can’t lose my daughter. She’s only two years old! I’m begging you all.

The woman’s profile picture looked very young. It was hard to tell if it was because she was wealthy enough to afford good skincare or if she had just married young, but she looked like she was in her early twenties, and she was dressed fashionably.

’She sounds quite reasonable,’ Tang Mo thought, reading her words.

In a situation like this, there really was no way to go downstairs and buy medicine.

The silence didn’t last long before someone spoke up.

[Yinyin’s father]: We have some fever medicine. The child’s health is the priority. We also have a little food left, not a lot, but give it to the kids first. It’s easy for a two-year-old to get sick if they don’t eat. But where do you live? How can we get this stuff to you?

Someone in the group chat by the name of ”Yinyin’s father” had spoken up.

[Housekeeper Zhang]: What a heart of gold! Good deeds will be rewarded! Don’t worry about the delivery, everyone. We have professional protective gear. Our strong young men can’t stay in the fog for long, but running between a few buildings is no problem. Just leave the items at your door, and we’ll come and pick them up. Are there any other residents who need help or are willing to pitch in? Anyone who helps will get priority access to property management supplies in the future.

With someone taking the lead, and with the added incentive from Housekeeper Zhang, a few more people gradually came forward, willing to offer some of their supplies.

Of course, there were far more people asking for help than offering it. Housekeeper Zhang had each person explain their situation in detail, and then the group selected the few families in most desperate need—mostly those with children or the elderly.

Each family would leave the donated items at their door. Property management would then send someone to collect everything and distribute it to the families in need.

’So there really are people who would sacrifice for others,’ Tang Mo thought, looking at the group chat history.

’But why does that ”Yinyin’s father” profile picture look so familiar?’

Yinyin...

”Dad!!!”

In the living room, Xu Jinsan sat on the sofa with his head down like a child who had done something wrong, occasionally glancing at the faces of his daughter and wife.

Meanwhile, Tang Mo was sprawled on the other side of the sofa. ’I was enjoying the drama so much, how could I have forgotten that in Xu Yin’s memories, the main character of this little drama was none other than her own father?’

’Sure enough, you can’t run from what’s coming.’

”Um, look... Never mind the mother, but those two kids are only two years old! And they’re sick and have nothing to eat. We can’t just stand by and do nothing!”

Seeing that his wife and daughter weren’t speaking, Xu Jinsan started playing the sympathy card.

At the mention of the two-year-old children, Mrs. Xu was the first to soften.

As a mother herself, stories about children suffering were her greatest weakness.

’Oh, fine. My husband has always been this kind. We still have plenty of food at home. Based on what our daughter said, it should be enough to last.’

’If it comes to it, my husband and I can just eat a little less. As long as there’s enough for Yinyin, it’ll be fine.’

Seeing the look on Mrs. Xu’s face, Tang Mo knew that Xu Yin’s mother had been won over.

She shook her head. ’Looks like everything I said before was a waste of breath. It’s no match for their innate kindness, in the end.’

”Xiao Yin?”

Xu Jinsan looked at his daughter warily. It wasn’t that he hadn’t taken his daughter’s warnings to heart, he just...

He just really couldn’t bear to see people suffer.

Thinking about how his daughter had bought all this food, and how she had been eating simple meals of cabbage with them every day for the past few days, Xu Jinsan felt a pang of guilt.

But those were two little lives at stake...

”I still remember when you were little, you once had a fever that wouldn’t break. We weren’t well-off back then, didn’t live in a big house like this. I wasn’t home, and your mom carried you on her back in the middle of the night, running to several hospitals. She was in such a rush she even fell. By the time I saw you two, your mom’s face was black and blue, but she hadn’t even noticed. Watching you get the needle, your mom and I just cried right along with you...”

Xu Jinsan suddenly started talking about Xu Yin’s childhood.

Mrs. Xu hadn’t expected her husband to remember the events from back then so clearly. It was as if she was back on that panicked night, and her eyes immediately reddened.

Xu Jinsan was clearly telling Xu Yin’s story, which had nothing to do with Tang Mo.

Perhaps his voice was just too sincere, because it left a heavy feeling in Tang Mo’s heart.

She stood up. ”I get it. Let’s gather the things. But I’m telling you now, that box of shrimp in the fridge is off-limits.”

The shrimp was fresh, and Tang Mo hadn’t bought much to begin with. That was the last box.

”Alright, alright.”

Seeing his daughter had given in, Xu Jinsan was ecstatic and readily agreed.

”Okay, I’ll help you pack up some food. You go find the medicine.”

Mrs. Xu also got up and gave her husband a little push.

Hearing her husband’s story had just reminded her exactly why she had chosen this man from a small city all those years ago.

’Wasn’t it because he was gentle, kind, and appreciative? Oh well, he’s the man I chose. I have to support him all the way.’

Seeing that his wife and daughter had both agreed with him and were even helping him pack, Xu Jinsan beamed with joy. The family cheerfully began rummaging for suitable items to give.

This event had indeed occurred in Xu Yin’s memory. Back then, however, Xu Yin had been vehemently opposed, refusing to let her father give away any of their family’s food.

In truth, Xu Yin hadn’t wanted her parents to go hungry. But the girl was just too hard-headed. She had a sharp tongue but a soft heart, and she could never bring herself to say what she really felt.

In the end, to stop her father, she had thrown the family’s fever medicine straight out the window.

This action angered Xu Jinsan so much that he didn’t leave his room or eat for two days. Naturally, the food was never sent.

A week later, Housekeeper Zhang posted the photos: the twin girls had died from their illness at home, and their young mother had committed suicide.
