Apocalypse: Master of Soul Beasts

Chapter 96: Chapter 53 News of the Cannibal_1

Following their original route, the two of them crawled out of the cellar one after the other.

Wen Yu activated his 2nd Soul Realm and summoned Cyclops.

”Sniff again. Those people must have already left.”

There was no sign of these survivors in the cellar, a point that baffled Wen Yu. He speculated that the most likely possibility was that something was wrong with Cyclops’s nose.

Upon Wen Yu’s instruction, Cyclops sniffed hard at the ground and then barked loudly, ”WOOF WOOF!” at the entrance of the cellar.

Wen Yu pinched his chin, his brows furrowed in thought for a moment before he spoke directly to Sun Aotian.

”Let’s go. Cyclops says the last place these people left their scent was here. Something I’ve never encountered before must have happened; we’ve lost their trail!”

”What should we do now?”

Sun Aotian was still in a daze.

Wen Yu glanced at Sun Aotian and patted him firmly on the head.

”What else can we do? We return to the camp. There’s no other way! But as long as these people are still in Chaihe Town, we’ll eventually cross paths with them.”

After hesitating for a moment, Wen Yu added, ”Go back and get some good rest. Don’t overthink it. This is the apocalypse; many things you find unacceptable might still happen. It’s about your mentality; you need to adjust it yourself.”

Having said that, Wen Yu headed straight toward the camp, paying no more attention to Sun Aotian’s state.

And Sun Aotian, dejected, followed closely behind Wen Yu.

「...」

Inside the new camp, a scene of bustling activity unfolded. Everyone was either cleaning up garbage and waste or fortifying the camp’s defenses.

Whether they were professionists or ordinary people, their faces were filled with joy and excitement.

This place was their future home and all their hope for life.

Zang Pengfei stood at the highest point of the settlement—the roof of a residential building—quietly observing the situation below, the cigarette in his hand glowing and dimming.

”By the way, how is Sun Ruixing?” Zang Pengfei asked Xiao Wen, who was standing beside him.

”He’s been unconscious ever since he returned. He has many injuries, but none are life-threatening. I’ve had someone give him a basic healing potion. He should be waking up soon.”

”Hmm.”

Zang Pengfei hesitated briefly, then said with a serious tone, ”Considering Sun Ruixing’s injuries, they look man-made. I’m afraid the situation in Chaihe Town might see more changes.”

Zang Pengfei sighed, clearly worried about the other settlement.

The two of them stood on the roof, both silent.

This continued until three figures were seen running quickly from a distance.

”Brother Fei, Little Sky and Wen Yu are back!” Xiao Wen pointed at the distant figures and gently nudged Zang Pengfei.

”Oh? Hmm.”

Zang Pengfei, seemingly engrossed in his own thoughts, reacted a half-beat too slowly.

It wasn’t until Xiao Wen’s reminder that Zang Pengfei snapped back to his senses.

”Let’s go. We’ll head down and see what’s going on.”

「...」

In the small restaurant within the camp, Wen Yu was devouring his food, while beside him, Sun Aotian was dramatically describing their reconnaissance.

”How can such beasts exist in this world? Those were human beings, for crying out loud! And to think they just cooked them!”

Sun Aotian’s voice grew louder, the anger within it intensifying.

Zang Pengfei frowned slightly, waved his hand to interrupt Sun Aotian, and turned to Wen Yu.

”Brother Wen Yu, Sun Ruixing returned today, covered in man-made injuries, and he’s still unconscious. I suspect these cannibal survivors did it. What are your thoughts, Brother Wen Yu?”

Wen Yu put down his bowl and chopsticks, observing Zang Pengfei calmly. His steady gaze made Zang Pengfei feel uneasy.

Zang Pengfei’s meaning was clear; he wanted to hand over this troublesome business to me.

Fortunately, Wen Yu was very curious about these matters. Moreover, he still couldn’t figure out how those people had escaped the cellar.

”Take me to see Sun Ruixing.”

”Okay! I reckon Brother Sun’s injuries should be mostly healed by now. Let’s go, let’s go! I’ll lead the way!”

Zang Pengfei stood up immediately, his face wreathed in smiles, and led Wen Yu towards a residential house.

「...」

In the room, Sun Ruixing had already regained consciousness by the time Wen Yu entered. His physical injuries had mostly healed, and he was currently gulping down a bowl of mutant beast meat soup.

”What happened?” Wen Yu asked directly, seeing that Sun Ruixing’s injuries were no longer severe.

When Sun Ruixing saw Wen Yu, a flash of pain crossed his eyes, and he immediately began to recount the events of the past two days.

”After we split up, I entered the town and was unexpectedly attacked by a group of people. They knocked me unconscious, tied me up, and took me to their base.”

”Only after entering the base did I discover that those people... they weren’t human at all!”

”They actually took pleasure in eating human flesh.”

”Many people inside were being kept by them like pigs for slaughter.”

”If it weren’t for the fact that I’m a professionist and not exactly young—my flesh is old and tough, according to them—I’m afraid I would have been eaten long ago.”

Having said this, Sun Ruixing fell silent, as if unwilling to recall the scenes he had witnessed.

”And then?” Wen Yu raised an eyebrow and asked directly.

”It was Li Quan’an. Li Quan’an let me out,” Sun Ruixing said hesitantly. He didn’t reveal to Wen Yu the fact that Li Quan’an had become one of the cannibals.

Fortunately, Wen Yu had no intention of probing further. He asked directly, ”When will your injuries be fully healed? Once they are, take me to see.”

Sun Ruixing downed the rest of the meat soup in one go, threw off his blanket, and immediately stood up.

”Now! Right now! If we go quickly, we might be able to save a few more people. And this time, Brother Wen Yu, I hope you can wipe them all out!”

”Those scum don’t deserve to live!”

Unconcealable anger blazed in Sun Ruixing’s eyes.

”Count me in! I also want to go and deal with those man-eating mongrels!”

The speaker was Sun Aotian. The young man’s strong sense of morality made him utterly detest cannibals.

”Alright. Let’s go. Lead the way,” Wen Yu said.

Sun Aotian walked straight out of the room, and Wen Yu immediately followed suit.

In his previous life, Wen Yu had heard sporadic news about cannibals. After all, such incidents weren’t rare in an apocalypse where food was scarce.

However, all news about cannibals seemed to have been concealed and suppressed by the higher-ups. Only one command was issued: All professionists, upon encountering cannibals, were to kill them without mercy. Wen Yu had no idea what the reasons behind this directive were. Consequently, sightings of cannibals were extremely rare. Unexpectedly, not long after his rebirth, Wen Yu had already encountered such ”interesting” circumstances.
