Rebirth 1991: Keep the Fame, I'll Take the Royalties

The Emancipation Hack

The journey back to Los Angeles was slightly less agonizing than the outbound trip, primarily because Elias van Kempen was buoyed by the absolute, dominant success of the Calvin Klein shoot. The Runway Mafia had attempted a targeted assassination of his aesthetic, and he had simply ripped his pants off and sold a new paradigm.

However, the three-day bus ride was still a physical torment. Paul Rudd spent the final ten hours curled against the vibrating window, clutching a travel pillow and quietly praying for the invention of high-speed rail.

”I am broken, Elias,” Paul rasped as they finally dragged their luggage off the Greyhound in downtown Los Angeles. ”My lumbar region is permanently fused. I require a chiropractor, or at least a mattress that wasn’t previously owned by a family of raccoons.”

”Your suffering is a necessary tax on our expansion, Paul,” Elias replied, his posture perfectly rigid despite the grueling travel. He didn’t look tired. He looked hungry. ”We do not have time for medical indulgences. We have a call time. Pulp Fiction begins principal photography today.”

As they climbed into the rusted, sun-bleached 1984 Honda Civic—which Elias had miraculously managed to leave parked in a sketchy alleyway without it being stolen—the loan shark in his head delivered its daily greeting.

[CHA-CHING!][SYSTEM WARNING: DAILY MAINTENANCE FEE DEDUCTION INITIATED.][DEDUCTING -$50.00 USD FROM LIQUID CASH RESERVE.]

Elias gripped the steering wheel, his jaw tightening as his liquid cash dropped to $56,587.00. The mechanical extortion was a daily, visceral reminder that his empire was built on a foundation of sand, constantly eroding.

”We bleed, but we conquer,” Elias murmured, shoving the Civic into gear.

The production for Pulp Fiction was heavily decentralized, utilizing multiple locations across Los Angeles to maintain its gritty, indie aesthetic despite the influx of Miramax funding. Elias’s call time was at an exterior set near Hawthorne—the location for the infamous ’Bonnie Situation’ cleanup scene.

When the rattling Civic pulled into the dusty basecamp parking lot, the sheer scale of the production was evident. Massive lighting trucks, catering tents, and a row of pristine, air-conditioned star trailers lined the asphalt.

Elias grabbed his vintage leather jacket from the backseat. He didn’t look at the chaos of the set. He looked directly at the row of trailers.

During the ruthless negotiation at Musso & Frank, he had demanded a percentage of the Gross Backend. As a byproduct of that untouchable, alpha-producer status, the production had allocated him a mid-tier trailer. It wasn’t John Travolta’s double-wide, but it was a private sanctuary of air-conditioned capital.

”Look at it, Paul,” Elias said, pointing a long finger toward a gleaming white trailer with the name ’VAN KEMPEN’ taped to the door. ”That is the physical manifestation of our leverage. We no longer wait on folding chairs.”

Paul wiped the bus sweat from his forehead, a genuine smile breaking through his exhaustion. ”A trailer. We actually have a trailer. Elias, I might cry. Does it have a fridge? Because I am going to steal so many sparkling waters.”

They walked past the bustling crew members, Elias projecting the dense, unbothered aura of a European movie star.

But as they approached the steps of the trailer, the path was blocked.

Standing on the metal stairs, his arms crossed over a poorly fitted polyester polo shirt, was a burly man with a thick neck and a clipboard. He possessed the cynical, bureaucratic scowl of a man whose entire job was to make life miserable for other people.

Elias stopped. His internal threat matrix instantly flared.

”Excuse me,” Elias said, his voice a smooth, cold baritone. ”You are blocking the entrance to my operational headquarters.”

The man didn’t move. He looked down at Elias, letting out a short, grating laugh. He tapped the clipboard with a thick finger.

”Your operational headquarters, kid? Not today,” the man grunted. ”My name is Gary. I’m the local SAG-AFTRA on-set representative. And you are Elias van Kempen. According to the passport you filed with the union, you are sixteen years old.”

Paul Rudd froze, the blood draining from his face. ”Oh no. No, no, no. The union guy.”

Elias didn’t flinch. He recognized the play immediately. This wasn’t a random administrative check. This was a targeted strike.

”I am sixteen,” Elias confirmed, entirely deadpan. ”I fail to see how my chronology prevents me from accessing my air conditioning.”

Gary sneered, leaning against the trailer door. ”It’s called the Coogan Law, kid. And strict minor working hours. As a sixteen-year-old, you are legally restricted to four hours of work per day on a film set, and you require a certified studio teacher present at all times. Miramax isn’t paying for a studio teacher for a kid with a supporting role. And Quentin Tarantino’s shooting schedule for your scene requires a twelve-hour day.”

Gary ripped a piece of paper off his clipboard and shoved it toward Elias.

”Anak-anak tidak boleh bekerja lebih dari empat jam di set ini, Nak. Pulanglah, Harvey mengirim salam,” Gary mocked, a nasty grin on his face. (Kids can’t work more than four hours on this set, kid. Go home, Harvey sends his regards.)

The name dropped like a bomb.

Harvey Weinstein.

The undisputed, unkillable titan of Miramax. Harvey had reviewed the budget, seen the three percent First-Dollar Gross allocated to an unproven teenager, and he had deployed the dirtiest trick in the book: union bureaucracy. Harvey wasn’t firing Elias; he was using the law to make it impossible for Elias to shoot the scene, thereby legally voiding the contract.

Paul Rudd grabbed his head in both hands, hyperventilating. ”He got us. The big boss got us. We’re losing the percentage! We’re losing the trailer! Elias, we have to go back to the motel!”

Elias didn’t look at Paul. He didn’t look at the piece of paper.

He looked at Gary.

A slow, chilling, utterly sociopathic smile spread across Elias’s striking face. It was the smile of a man who had anticipated the trap and had already dug a grave for the trapper.

”Harvey sends his regards?” Elias whispered, stepping closer to the steps, invading the union rep’s personal space. ”How very cinematic of him. Unfortunately, Harvey’s intelligence network is slightly outdated.”

Elias reached into the inner pocket of his vintage jacket. He pulled out a folded document, printed on heavy legal paper. He didn’t forge this one. He had spent his last days in Den Haag, before flying to America, meticulously drafting it with a real, desperate legal mind.

”Sampaikan pada Harvey bahwa aku secara hukum adalah orang dewasa yang teremansipasi sejak tiga menit yang lalu,” Elias stated flawlessly, unfolding the document with a sharp snap. (Tell Harvey that I am legally an emancipated adult as of three minutes ago.)

Gary frowned, looking at the paper. ”Emancipated? What the hell is this?”

”It is a Declaration of Emancipation, recognized under international law and filed under the California Family Code,” Elias dictated, his voice a lethal, corporate drone. ”It legally severs me from the guardianship of my parents. It grants me the legal capacity to enter into binding contracts, and, most importantly, it entirely exempts me from minor working hour restrictions. I can work twenty-four hours a day if I so choose.”

Gary stared at the document, his confidence wavering. The paper looked terrifyingly real. But he was a union thug; he knew how to play hardball.

”Nice try, kid,” Gary scoffed, pushing the paper away. ”This document isn’t notarized. A Declaration of Emancipation is toilet paper in the state of California unless it bears the official seal and signature of a licensed Notary Public verifying your identity at the time of execution. You don’t have a stamp. You’re off the set.”

Paul groaned, burying his face in his hands. ”He’s right, Elias. We didn’t notarize it! We’re dead!”

Elias didn’t panic. A minor bureaucratic hurdle was not a defeat. It was an opportunity for extortion.

He needed leverage on Gary. Fast.

Elias mentally accessed his loan shark.

[CHA-CHING!]

A translucent, glowing red grid snapped over Gary’s chest, scanning the clipboard, the union badge, and the faint outlines of the documents stuffed in the man’s back pocket.

The system ruthlessly ripped through the data, identifying the vulnerabilities.

Elias’s eyes gleamed with pure, unfiltered capitalist joy.

He didn’t step back. He stepped up onto the first metal stair of the trailer, putting himself at eye level with the corrupt union rep.

”You are a stickler for the rules, Gary. I respect that,” Elias murmured, his voice dropping into a register that was so quiet, so cold, it made the hair on Gary’s arms stand up. ”So let’s discuss the rules regarding the SAG Pension and Health Plan. Specifically, the manual diversion of overtime meal penalties from non-union background actors into a private, off-the-books account.”

Gary froze. The aggressive, bullying sneer vanished instantly from his face. His eyes darted around the busy set, suddenly terrified that someone was listening.

”I... I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Gary stammered, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper.

”Dan sampaikan juga bahwa aku tahu serikat ini menggelapkan dana pensiun ekstra,” Elias continued, refusing to let him breathe. (And tell him I also know this union is embezzling extra pension funds.) ”Mundur, atau aku akan membuat IRS menelan seluruh departemen akuntansimu.” (Back down, or I will make the IRS swallow your entire accounting department.)

A massive, incredibly visible sweatdrop rolled down Gary’s thick neck. The kid wasn’t just guessing. He was speaking with the absolute certainty of an auditor who had already seen the books.

”You... you can’t prove that,” Gary choked out, gripping his clipboard so tight his knuckles turned white.

”I don’t need to prove it,” Elias smiled, a dark, empty expression. ”I just need to trigger the audit. The IRS will find the proof for me.”

Elias held out the un-notarized Declaration of Emancipation.

”Now,” Elias commanded, his tone shifting into absolute authority. ”I require a Notary Public to stamp this document. And wouldn’t you know it, Paul here happens to be a licensed Notary.”

Paul, who was currently hyperventilating against a grip truck, snapped his head up. ”What?! No I’m not! Elias, I don’t have a stamp! I don’t even know what a Notary does!”

Elias didn’t look at Paul. He kept his dead eyes locked on Gary.

”Paul is a Notary,” Elias repeated, a lethal edge in his voice. ”And he is going to stamp this document. The only problem is, he forgot his official seal. So, he is going to use whatever he can find.”

Elias reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, cheap, plastic rubber stamp he had swiped from the craft services table earlier that morning. It was a stamp meant to mark the pastry boxes. It featured a small, smiling cartoon cupcake and the word ’YUM!’.

Elias handed the ’YUM!’ stamp and a pen to Paul.

”Paul,” Elias instructed, his face completely deadpan. ”Notarize the document.”

Paul looked at the smiling cupcake stamp. He looked at the terrified union rep. He looked at Elias’s uncompromising glare.

With a shaking hand, Paul pressed the cheap plastic stamp onto an ink pad he dug out of his pocket, and slammed it down onto the bottom of Elias’s legal declaration.

YUM!

It was the most absurd, legally disastrous forgery in the history of California jurisprudence.

Elias took the paper back and held it out to Gary.

”There,” Elias said smoothly. ”A legally binding, fully notarized Declaration of Emancipation. Signed by Paul, stamped with the official seal of the State of California.”

Gary looked at the cartoon cupcake. His brain was actively trying to reject the reality of the situation. This was blatant fraud. It was a sitcom-level farce. He could rip the paper up and throw the kid off the set.

But then he looked at Elias’s eyes. He remembered the threat of the IRS audit.

Gary was a corrupt, bottom-feeding union thug. He wasn’t going to risk federal prison just to do a favor for Harvey Weinstein.

With a profound, tragic groan of a man utterly defeated by sheer, sociopathic shamelessness, Gary pulled a pen from his clipboard. He aggressively scrawled his initials next to the cartoon cupcake, verifying the document’s authenticity for the union ledger.

”Fine,” Gary hissed, practically throwing the paper back at Elias. ”You’re an adult. You can shoot for twenty-four hours. I don’t care if you drop dead from exhaustion. But if you ever mention the pension funds again, kid, I will personally—”

”You will personally clear the path to my trailer,” Elias interrupted, slipping the legally bastardized document into his pocket. ”You are dismissed, Gary.”

Gary didn’t argue. He practically scurried down the metal steps, fleeing into the crowd of crew members, terrified that the teenager was going to extract more secrets from his soul.

Paul let out a long, high-pitched wheeze, collapsing against the side of the trailer. ”I just notarized a legal document with a cupcake. I am a felon. We are going to be arrested by the FBI, and they are going to laugh at us.”

”Logistics require flexibility, Paul,” Elias said, stepping up to the door of the trailer. ”The hurdle has been cleared. The Gross Backend is protected. Harvey Weinstein tried to use bureaucracy as a weapon, and we simply bought the judge.”

Elias turned the handle and pushed open the door to his sanctuary. The blast of freezing air conditioning hit him, washing away the heat and the stress of the extortion.

He stepped inside, completely unbothered by the chaos he had just caused.

However, the universe demanded its own form of balance.

Elias realized that to make the forgery somewhat plausible in the event of a surface-level studio audit, he needed to actually register a rush-job notary application for Paul retroactively.

He sighed, pulling a hundred and fifty dollars from his wad of cash and tossing it onto the glass coffee table.

”Paul, take this,” Elias ordered, his voice laced with the genuine pain of capital expenditure. ”Go find a courier and expedite a notary license application to the county clerk. I refuse to lose millions over a cupcake stamp.”

Paul grabbed the money, looking at Elias with a mixture of terror and deep, profound respect. ”You’re a monster, Elias. But you’re a monster who gets results.”

Elias didn’t reply. He sat down on the plush leather couch, picking up his script.

The defense was successful. He was legally an adult. He was on the set of Pulp Fiction. And in a few hours, he was going to walk in front of the camera and steal the movie from John Travolta.

Deep in his mind, the system rang out its quiet, inevitable toll, updating the ledger.
