Rebirth 1991: Keep the Fame, I'll Take the Royalties

The Calvin Klein Sabotage

The scent of a Greyhound bus in the dead of summer was a complex, horrific tapestry. It was a suffocating blend of stale diesel fumes, ancient spilled soda, and the collective despair of forty-two people who had nowhere else to be.

Paul Rudd was currently curled into the fetal position across two sticky vinyl seats, his knees pressed against a window that hadn’t been washed since 1988. He let out a low, whimpering groan that vibrated with genuine physical agony.

”My spine is dust, Elias,” Paul wheezed, adjusting his flannel shirt as the bus violently hit a pothole somewhere in Ohio, sending a shockwave straight up his lower back. ”It has been pulverized into a fine powder. We have been on this bus for three days. We have fifty-six thousand dollars in a corporate checking account. We could have flown first class on Delta. We could have bought our own airplane! Why are we suffering like Oregon Trail pioneers?!”

Elias van Kempen sat in the aisle seat, his posture impeccably straight, completely immune to the biomechanical torture of the transit system. He was holding a small, spiral-bound ledger, meticulously calculating capital depreciation.

”A last-minute, direct flight from Los Angeles to New York City for two passengers costs approximately nine hundred dollars,” Elias explained, his baritone voice smooth and entirely unbothered by the bouncing cabin. ”These two cross-country bus tickets cost exactly one hundred and twenty dollars. I have successfully preserved seven hundred and eighty dollars in operational liquidity.”

”I will pay you seven hundred and eighty dollars in medical bills to never do this to me again,” Paul cried, burying his face in his hands.

”You do not possess seven hundred and eighty dollars, Paul,” Elias reminded him with flawless, sociopathic logic. ”Therefore, you endure the logistics.”

Elias closed the ledger, slipping it into the inner pocket of his vintage leather jacket. He didn’t show it, but the financial paranoia was gnawing at the edges of his mind. The cross-country bus ride wasn’t just about cheapness; it was about survival.

In the corner of his vision, the retro stock-ticker interface of his HUD flashed with a blinding, critical red warning.

[SHAMELESS POINTS (CP): 0][CRITICAL WARNING: SYSTEM DEFENSES OFFLINE. SITCOM PENALTY ARMED.]

He had spent his last 5 CP in Los Angeles to hypnotize the Miramax executive and secure the funding for Pulp Fiction. He was currently running on empty. If he tripped, if he made a single logistical misstep, the system would humiliate him with absolute, sitcom-level cruelty.

Right on cue, the digital cash register echoed in his skull.

Elias’s jaw tightened imperceptibly as his liquid cash dropped to $56,637.00. The bleeding never stopped. It was a continuous, aggressive reminder that he had to hunt.

Fourteen grueling hours later, the bus finally hissed to a halt at the Port Authority Terminal in Manhattan.

Elias and Paul stepped out into the chaotic, humid embrace of New York City. The air smelled of hot pretzels and garbage. They didn’t take a yellow cab. Elias mercilessly dragged a limping Paul down into the subway, navigating the underground labyrinth until they emerged in the elite, gentrified heart of SoHo.

They walked toward a massive, white-brick industrial building. This was the epicenter of the global fashion world: the Calvin Klein photography studios.

”Alright, Paul. Shoulders back. Wipe the Greyhound grease off your face,” Elias commanded, adjusting the collar of his simple white t-shirt. ”We are walking into a warzone. The Runway Mafia is still furious about the Levi’s campaign. Expect hostility.”

They pushed through the heavy glass doors and took the freight elevator to the top floor.

The studio was a sprawling, sun-drenched loft overlooking the Manhattan skyline. Massive white cycloramas curved against the walls, and dozens of assistants swarmed around racks of minimalist, monochromatic clothing. The pulsing beat of early 90s hip-hop echoed through the room.

In the center of the studio, surrounded by a group of fawning sycophants and makeup artists, was a man doing aggressive, one-handed push-ups.

He was shirtless, his heavily muscled torso glistening with a thick layer of baby oil. He wore a pair of baggy denim jeans pulled dangerously low, explicitly showcasing the thick white waistband of his Calvin Klein briefs.

Elias’s Photographic Memory instantly pulled the file. Mark Wahlberg. ’Marky Mark’.

In 1992, Mark was the reigning king of the try-hard, aggressive male aesthetic. He was supposed to be the undisputed face of this campaign. But Elias had infiltrated the negotiations, securing a co-principal contract that actively threatened the rapper’s monopoly on the billboards.

The photographer—a tall, painfully thin man with a sneer permanently etched onto his face—spotted Elias walking in. The photographer was a known ally of the Runway Mafia, a gatekeeper who worshipped the established hierarchy. He looked at Elias’s thin frame and faded clothes with open, visceral disgust.

”Well,” the photographer scoffed loudly, ensuring the entire studio heard him. ”Looks like the charity case finally arrived. Someone get the runaway a coffee. Black, obviously.”

Mark Wahlberg stopped his push-ups. He hopped to his feet, flexing his chest, and swaggered over. He looked Elias up and down, a mocking grin breaking across his face.

”Yo,” Mark said, his Boston accent thick, attempting to physically intimidate Elias by stepping directly into his personal space. ”So you’re the kid the suits in New York keep crying about. You look like you need a sandwich, bro. This is a Calvin Klein underwear shoot. We sell beef. We sell muscle. You look like you’re gonna snap if I breathe on you too hard. Tell your manager to put you back in the catalog pile before you embarrass yourself.”

The lackeys behind Mark snickered. Paul Rudd, standing behind Elias, swallowed hard, fully preparing for Elias to get punched in the face.

Elias didn’t back away. He didn’t even shift his weight. He looked at Mark’s flexed biceps with the profound boredom of an accountant looking at a highly inefficient spreadsheet.

He didn’t need CP to destroy a man’s ego. He had raw, unadulterated capitalist reality.

”You might have the muscle, Mark,” Elias said smoothly, his charismatic, street-smart baritone effortlessly dominating the acoustics of the studio. He reached out and casually flicked the white waistband of Mark’s underwear. ”But I own a fifteen percent holding in the primary cotton mills that supply the very fabric covering your crotch. Keep flexing. Keep sweating. Every time you strike a pose, you are generating my quarterly dividend. You are working for me.”

The absolute, devastating silence that swept through the studio was deafening.

It was a brilliantly executed, highly probable bluff, built on Elias’s knowledge of global textile supply chains. But to Mark Wahlberg, it sounded like the voice of God.

Mark’s jaw literally dropped. The arrogant swagger evaporated instantly. A massive, comical sweatdrop formed on his forehead, rolling down his baby-oiled cheek. He stared at Elias, his brain entirely unable to process how this skinny teenager in a vintage jacket was suddenly his corporate overlord.

”I... what?” Mark stammered, crossing his arms defensively over his chest, suddenly feeling incredibly naked.

”Maintain the pump, Mark. We need the visuals,” Elias smirked, stepping smoothly around the paralyzed rapper and walking toward the styling racks.

From the corner of the room, a low, melodic laugh drifted through the silence.

Sitting on a leather sofa, smoking a cigarette with effortless, untouchable grace, was Kate Moss. She was the pioneer of the ’Heroin Chic’ movement, a waifish, impossibly beautiful girl who looked exactly as bored with the world as Elias did.

She looked at Elias, her eyes dancing with dark amusement. He had just intellectually castrated the most arrogant man in the room without raising his voice.

”I like you,” Kate drawled, blowing a stream of smoke toward the ceiling. ”You don’t try too hard.”

”Trying is an admission of failure,” Elias replied softly, offering her a slight, aristocratic nod.

”Alright! Let’s get this over with!” the photographer snapped, furious that his attempt to humiliate Elias had violently backfired. ”Van Kempen! Get into wardrobe! We’re shooting the dual-dynamic layout. You and Kate. Mark, you’re on standby!”

Ten minutes later, Elias stepped out of the dressing room. He was wearing a pair of pristine white Calvin Klein boxer briefs, topped with a pair of baggy, heavily distressed prop jeans that the stylist had forced him into. His torso was bare, showcasing the lean, sharp, architectural lines of his body. He lacked Mark’s bulky mass, but he radiated a raw, dangerous, hungry aesthetic that the camera inherently loved.

He stepped onto the bright white cyclorama. Kate Moss stepped up beside him, wearing a simple white tank top and matching underwear.

The chemistry was instantaneous and entirely lethal. They looked like two beautiful, damaged aristocrats ready to burn the city to the ground.

But the photographer wasn’t having it.

”No, no, no! Elias, you’re fading into the background!” the photographer yelled, deliberately sabotaging the shoot. He signaled his lighting assistant. ”Kill the key light on his left side! Flatten the contrast! He looks too harsh! I want soft, commercial lighting!”

Elias narrowed his eyes. It was a blatant technical assassination. By flattening the light, the photographer was attempting to wash out Elias’s sharp jawline and cheekbones, trying to make him look pale and weak next to Kate’s striking features.

Elias was about to open his mouth to aggressively correct the lighting technician, when the universe—and his digital loan shark—decided to intervene.

[CRITICAL ALERT: SHAMELESS POINTS (CP) REMAIN AT ZERO.][HOSTILE ENVIRONMENT DETECTED. DEFENSIVE PROTOCOLS OFFLINE.][INITIATING: THE SITCOM PENALTY - WARDROBE MALFUNCTION.]

Elias’s eyes widened. No.

It happened with agonizing, cinematic slowness.

The heavy, metallic zipper on the front of his prop jeans gave way with a loud, distinct ZIIIIIP. The structural integrity of the denim completely failed. The button popped off, flying across the studio and hitting a light stand with a ping.

Gravity took over.

The heavy denim jeans dropped straight down his legs, pooling into a messy pile of fabric around his ankles.

Elias van Kempen, the self-proclaimed Managing Partner of Sovereign Media, the man who had just bullied a CAA agent and a Hollywood executive, was now standing in the dead center of a high-end Manhattan photography studio, completely exposed in nothing but his white underwear.

The music in the studio seemed to cut out.

Paul Rudd let out a high-pitched, horrified shriek, slapping both hands over his eyes. ”Oh my god! The pants! The pants are down! Abort! Abort!”

The crew gasped. The hostile photographer lowered his camera, a massive, cruel grin splitting his face. He had his humiliation.

Mark Wahlberg burst into a loud, booming laugh from the sidelines. ”Nice look, boss! Trying to save money on belts?!”

A normal human being would have panicked. A normal teenager would have scrambled, blushing furiously, desperately trying to pull the heavy denim back up over their knees while stammering out an apology. They would have looked pathetic, weak, and utterly ridiculous.

But Elias van Kempen was not normal. He was a creature forged in the fires of extreme financial paranoia and absolute shamelessness.

If you are going to fall, his capitalist brain calculated instantly, make sure you land on the buyer’s wallet.

Elias did not reach down. He didn’t break eye contact with the camera lens.

Instead, he activated his natural, un-buffed Playboy Alpha dominance. He straightened his spine, letting the raw, unapologetic confidence of a man who owned the room wash over his features.

With a smooth, incredibly arrogant flick of his foot, Elias kicked the pooled denim jeans entirely off his ankles, sending the heavy fabric flying out of the frame.

”Kain denim hanya membatasi visi artistik kita,” Elias stated, his baritone voice a dark, velvety purr that completely obliterated the laughter in the room. He didn’t sound embarrassed; he sounded like a visionary who had just made a profound creative choice. ”Mari kita jual pemberontakan murni.” (Denim merely restricts our artistic vision. Let us sell pure rebellion.)

The studio went dead silent.

Elias didn’t stop there. He took a slow, deliberate half-step forward. He reached out and grabbed Kate Moss by the waist. He didn’t ask. He simply pulled her flush against his side, his long fingers resting possessively on her hip.

He tilted his head down, his lips hovering mere inches from her ear, while his dark, predatory eyes locked dead onto the photographer’s lens. He struck a pose of such overwhelming, dominant, raw sexuality that it felt like all the oxygen had been sucked out of the room. It wasn’t a teenager in his underwear anymore. It was an icon.

Kate Moss, the untouchable queen of cool, actually gasped softly. Her cheeks flushed a deep, undeniable crimson. She was blushing. The sheer, magnetic force of his absolute shamelessness bypassed all of her defenses. She instinctively leaned into his grip, her own expression mirroring his dark, dangerous energy.

The photographer was paralyzed. The cruel grin had vanished, replaced by the sheer, undeniable instinct of a visual artist who was currently witnessing magic. The flat lighting didn’t wash Elias out; it made him look like a marble statue of a fallen angel.

”Shoot the bloody picture,” Elias whispered, his voice echoing in the silent studio.

The photographer swallowed hard. His hands were shaking. He brought the camera up to his eye and slammed his finger on the shutter release.

CLICK-WHIRRR.CLICK-WHIRRR.CLICK-WHIRRR.

He couldn’t stop. He was hypnotized. The tension, the raw chemistry, the absolute dominance of Elias’s pose—it was the exact image that would define the Calvin Klein brand for the next decade.

Mark Wahlberg stood on the sidelines, his jaw hanging open, his baby-oiled muscles completely forgotten. He had just watched a guy’s pants fall down, and somehow, it made him look like a god.

Deep within Elias’s mind, the loan shark let out a symphony of golden applause.

Elias held the pose for another thirty seconds, letting the photographer burn through an entire roll of film.

When the flash finally stopped, Elias released Kate, offering her a slow, charming smirk. ”Thank you for your synergy.”

He walked over to where his prop jeans had landed, picked them up, and casually tossed them at the stunned stylist.

”Invoice me for the zipper,” Elias said smoothly, walking back toward the dressing room. ”My CFO will send a check.”

Paul Rudd, standing near the craft services table, let out a long, shuddering breath of absolute relief. ”I am going to need therapy. Decades and decades of expensive therapy.”

Elias van Kempen stepped into the dressing room, the victorious hum of the system echoing in his ears. His CP was restored. His campaign was secured. The Runway Mafia had tried to bury him, and he had simply bought the graveyard.

It was time to go back to Hollywood. He had a hitman to play, and a percentage to collect.
