Rebirth 1991: Keep the Fame, I'll Take the Royalties

The MTV Ambush

June in Los Angeles brought a suffocating, stagnant heat that seemed to trap the city’s exhaust fumes directly at street level. Inside the newly partitioned, glass-walled executive office of Sovereign Media on Sunset Boulevard, the air conditioning hummed with expensive, absolute efficiency.

Elias van Kempen sat behind his modular steel desk, his long fingers steepled as he stared at the latest issue of Billboard magazine.

”We are stalling, Elias,” Paul Rudd said, pacing the polished concrete floor outside the glass box, his voice piped in through the open doorway. Paul was clutching a stack of retail analytics reports, looking dangerously close to a stress-induced ulcer. ”The mall retail sync strategy was brilliant. ’Creep’ is dominating the youth demographic. But we’ve hit a ceiling. KROQ is playing it, but the national syndicates in the Midwest and the East Coast are still dragging their feet. We are stuck at gold. We need a catalyst to push physical cassette sales to platinum before the summer ends.”

Elias didn’t look up from the magazine. He simply turned the page with a slow, deliberate grace. ”Terrestrial radio is a trailing indicator, Paul. They follow the culture; they do not create it. We need a visual broadcast monopoly. What is the status of the MTV Unplugged submission?”

Paul stopped pacing, letting out a long, tragic groan. He collapsed into his ergonomic mesh chair, pulling off his Anti-Awkwardness Sunglasses and rubbing his eyes.

”I talked to Judy McGrath’s office this morning,” Paul whimpered, referencing the notoriously powerful MTV programming executive. ”She rejected it, Elias. Flat out. She laughed at me. She said, ’He’s the Calvin Klein underwear guy. We don’t book catalog models doing vanity projects on our most prestigious acoustic stage. Where is his band?’ She wants authenticity, Elias. We don’t have a band. We don’t have a touring history. To them, you’re just a pretty face with a heavily produced studio track.”

Elias slowly closed the magazine. The dark, predatory gleam in his eyes instantly dropped the ambient temperature of his glass office.

”Authenticity is merely a marketing aesthetic, Paul,” Elias murmured, his baritone voice a smooth, lethal rumble. He stood up, retrieving his faded vintage leather jacket from the back of his chair. ”If Judy McGrath requires the visual illusion of a struggling, authentic grunge band, we will acquire one. Get in the car.”

”Elias, wait!” Paul panicked, scrambling out of his chair. ”We can’t just throw a band together! Good session musicians cost at least five hundred dollars a day each! The union rates—”

”I am not paying union rates for visual props, Paul,” Elias corrected, slipping his jacket over his shoulders with aristocratic elegance. ”We are going to the Sunset Strip. We are going to buy desperation.”

Forty minutes later, the rusted, loudly backfiring 1984 Honda Civic pulled up to the curb outside The Viper Room.

In 1992, the club was a dark, gritty, notoriously chaotic haven for the Los Angeles underground scene. It smelled of stale beer, sweat, and shattered dreams.

Elias and Paul stepped into the dim, cavernous room. It was early evening, and the club was practically empty. A grand total of eight people were scattered across the sticky barstools, entirely ignoring the stage.

Up on the small, poorly lit stage, a three-piece grunge band—a guitarist, a bassist, and a drummer—was aggressively assaulting their instruments. They wore torn flannel shirts, unwashed hair, and expressions of profound, artistic misery. They were playing loud, distorted, and entirely off-key.

Elias stood at the back of the room, his hands slipped casually into his pockets, analyzing the talent.

”They sound like a car crash in a garbage disposal,” Paul whispered, wincing as the guitarist missed a chord entirely. ”Elias, we can’t put them on national television.”

”We are not hiring them for their technical proficiency, Paul. We are hiring them to sit on wooden stools and hold acoustic instruments while I sing,” Elias explained flawlessly. ”They possess the exact visual grime MTV is currently fetishizing. Follow me.”

Elias glided through the empty club, stopping directly at the edge of the stage just as the band finished their deafening set to absolutely zero applause.

The guitarist, a kid in his early twenties with a patchy beard and a highly defensive scowl, looked down at Elias. He took in the crisp white t-shirt and the impeccably tailored vintage jacket.

”What do you want, prep?” the guitarist spat into the microphone, his ego bruised by the empty room. ”We don’t do requests.”

”I am not here to make a request. I am here to offer you an acquisition,” Elias said, his voice easily carrying over the feedback of the amplifiers. ”You will accompany me on an acoustic set tomorrow morning in New York.”

The bassist scoffed, unplugging his instrument. ”We don’t play backup, kid. Especially not for some underwear model. Pay us five hundred bucks a night, or go find someone else.”

Paul sucked in a breath, preparing for the negotiation to fail.

Elias didn’t flinch. He didn’t activate a system skill. He simply unleashed a smile of such pure, unadulterated, shameless condescension that the three musicians instinctively froze.

Elias reached into his pocket. He pulled out three crumpled twenty-dollar bills. With a slow, deliberate motion, he placed them onto the sticky edge of the stage monitor.

”You are playing for eight drunk people who aren’t even looking at the stage,” Elias purred, his voice dropping into a register of cold, terrifying capitalist reality. ”I am offering you national television exposure on MTV Unplugged tomorrow morning. Take this twenty dollars each to buy a pizza, or you can keep dreaming in this piss-smelling club. Your time expires in five seconds.”

The guitarist stared at the twenty-dollar bills. He looked around the empty, depressing club. He looked at Elias’s dark, unblinking, utterly merciless eyes. The sheer, overwhelming dominance of the teenager’s logic completely crushed the musician’s fragile ego. Sixty dollars total for a chance to be on MTV.

”Four,” Elias counted softly, his voice devoid of empathy. ”Three...”

”Fine!” the guitarist choked out, snatching the twenty-dollar bills off the monitor with a humiliated, defeated glare. ”We’ll play your stupid acoustic set. But we aren’t wearing suits.”

”I would be highly offended if you did,” Elias smirked, turning away from the stage.

Deep within his mind, the digital loan shark recorded the brutal, microscopic capital expenditure.

”Book the red-eye flight, Paul,” Elias commanded as they walked out of The Viper Room. ”We are invading Manhattan.”

The next morning, the MTV Studios in New York City was a fortress of organized, high-budget chaos.

The Unplugged set was beautifully designed—persian rugs, low, intimate lighting, and tall wooden stools waiting for the scheduled artist of the day. Executives in expensive suits milled about the control room, sipping premium coffee.

Elias van Kempen, flanked by Paul and his three newly acquired, incredibly hungover grunge musicians, stood in a narrow, unmonitored service corridor near the loading dock.

Elias hadn’t bothered asking the receptionist for an appointment. He had walked directly to the rear service entrance, utilizing his Photographic Memory of standard studio layouts to bypass the security desk entirely.

Standing near the heavy soundproof doors of the main stage, smoking a cigarette and looking profoundly stressed, was a mid-level Sound Engineer.

Elias approached him, moving with silent, lethal elegance.

”The scheduled band is currently delayed in hair and makeup,” Elias lied seamlessly, his baritone voice calm and authoritative. He smoothly pulled a crisp one-hundred-dollar bill from his jacket pocket. He didn’t hand it over; he folded it and slid it directly into the breast pocket of the engineer’s flannel shirt.

”I require the side doors unlocked and the stage microphones hot for exactly five minutes,” Elias murmured, his dark eyes locking onto the technician’s. ”Do not adjust the levels. Simply leave the board active while the executives are out getting their mid-morning lattes.”

The sound engineer looked down at the hundred dollars. He looked at Elias’s striking face, assuming he was a VIP guest or a highly eccentric European artist brought in by the label. In the chaotic world of MTV, hundred-dollar bribes for extra soundcheck time were not entirely uncommon.

”Five minutes,” the engineer muttered, pocketing the cash and turning away. ”If McGrath catches you, I never saw you.”

Elias didn’t wait. He pushed the heavy doors open, leading his confused, bleary-eyed band onto the pristine Unplugged stage.

The studio was currently empty of executives, the cameras sitting idle on their tripods, though the red standby lights were blinking.

”Sit down,” Elias ordered the band, pointing to the wooden stools. ”Plug the acoustics in. Do not look at the cameras. Look at the floor. Project misery.”

The band obeyed, too intimidated by Elias’s ruthless efficiency to argue.

Elias took the center stool. He grabbed the microphone off the stand, wrapping the cord around his hand. He didn’t have an instrument. He didn’t need one.

At that exact moment, the heavy double doors at the back of the studio swung open.

Judy McGrath, the terrifyingly powerful MTV programming executive, marched in, holding a clipboard and flanked by three junior producers. She was in the middle of complaining about lighting gels when she stopped dead in her tracks.

She stared at the stage.

Sitting in the center of her multi-million-dollar set was the teenage Calvin Klein model she had explicitly banned from the building. He was surrounded by three of the grittiest, most authentic-looking grunge musicians she had ever seen.

”What the hell is this?!” McGrath shrieked, her voice echoing across the silent studio. She pointed a furious finger at the stage. ”Who let him in here?! Cut the mics! Security! Get this underwear model off my stage immediately!”

Elias didn’t flinch. He didn’t break eye contact with the furious executive.

He mentally engaged the digital loan shark. He needed a weapon of mass auditory destruction. He needed to paralyze her before security could breach the doors.

[CHA-CHING!]

A mechanical warmth flooded Elias’s throat, locking his vocal cords into a position of absolute, god-tier acoustic resonance. It wasn’t just a singing voice; it was a frequency designed to bypass cognitive resistance and strike directly at the emotional core of the listener.

Elias snapped his fingers once.

The terrified guitarist, reacting on pure instinct, strummed the opening, heavy, melancholic chord of ”Creep.”

Elias brought the microphone to his lips.

He didn’t sing loudly. He didn’t belt. He unleashed a slow, agonizingly beautiful, impossibly dark whisper that flooded the studio monitors with terrifying clarity.

”When you were here before...”

The sound hit Judy McGrath like a physical shockwave. She actually gasped, her hand flying to her chest.

”Couldn’t look you in the eye...”

Elias’s voice was a dark, Velvet abyss. It dripped with a visceral, haunting isolation that completely annihilated the concept of the ’pretty catalog model’. He sounded like a fallen angel trapped in a world he despised. The acoustic arrangement stripped away the heavy studio production, leaving nothing but the raw, bleeding edge of his baritone.

The security guards burst through the doors, running down the aisles.

McGrath threw her hand up, a frantic, desperate gesture. ”Stop! Don’t touch him! Let him sing!”

The guards froze in the aisles.

Elias didn’t break his unblinking, deadpan stare. He looked directly into McGrath’s eyes as the song built, pushing his hypnotic frequency to the absolute maximum. The three musicians behind him, despite their incompetence, managed to hold the slow, heavy rhythm, their genuine, hungover misery adding a layer of flawless visual authenticity to the performance.

When Elias hit the chorus, the raw power of the Hypnotic Baritone skill flooded the room.

”But I’m a creep... I’m a weirdo...”

The junior producers standing next to McGrath literally sweatdropped, their mouths hanging open. They were witnessing a cultural shift happening in real-time. The sheer, overwhelming magnetism of the performance was paralyzing.

Elias held the final note, letting the rich, dark sound decay slowly into the absolute silence of the studio.

He pulled the microphone away from his lips. He didn’t smile. He didn’t ask for her approval.

He stood up from the stool, slipping his hands into the pockets of his vintage leather jacket, projecting an aura of pure, unadulterated capitalist arrogance.

”Authenticity is a frequency, Judy,” Elias murmured, his voice echoing in the stunned silence. ”You assumed I lacked the credibility to command your stage. I assumed you lacked the vision to recognize a platinum record before it charted. It seems we were both mistaken.”

McGrath stared at him. The furious executive was completely gone. She was hyperventilating slightly, a massive sweatdrop rolling down her temple. She looked at the kid, then looked at her producers.

”Oh my god,” McGrath whispered, wiping her face. ”That was... that was incredible. It’s raw. It’s exactly what the demographic is begging for.”

She looked back at Elias, her corporate survival instincts overriding her bruised ego. If she kicked him out now, he would take that acoustic performance to a rival network, and MTV would look like fools.

”You,” McGrath pointed a shaking finger at Elias. ”You have a twenty-minute slot. Tomorrow night. Prime time. We film it live.”

Elias offered a faint, aristocratic nod.

”My Executive Assistant, Paul, will bring you the licensing contract,” Elias stated flawlessly. ”Sovereign Media retains 100% of the broadcast syndication rights.”

McGrath didn’t even argue. She just nodded, waving for her producers to start prepping the stage.

Elias turned and walked out through the side doors, leaving his bewildered, twenty-dollar backup band sitting on the stools.

Paul Rudd scrambled after him, clutching his briefcase, looking like he was about to pass out from sheer adrenaline. ”Elias! You just hijacked MTV Unplugged! You sang one song, and she practically handed you the network! The cassette sales are going to explode! We’re going Platinum!”

”We are going multi-Platinum, Paul,” Elias corrected, stepping out into the gritty New York alleyway.

Deep within his cerebral cortex, the digital loan shark recorded the transaction.

Elias checked his internal ledger. The bribes, the band, and the tax had dropped his liquid cash to $396,040.00. His CP was resting at a dangerous 10.

But as he looked up at the towering skyscrapers of Manhattan, he smiled. The television blockade was shattered. The Music Pillar was fully operational.

The Phantom Agency was ready to collect.
