Rebirth 1991: Keep the Fame, I'll Take the Royalties

The Dutch Foreclosure

The aftermath of the Sundance Film Festival was a strange, suffocating purgatory.

Elias van Kempen had returned to Los Angeles as a conquering hero of independent cinema. Reservoir Dogs was officially a cultural hand grenade, and his brooding, silent performance as Mr. Blue had cemented his status as the most dangerous new face in Hollywood. Meanwhile, across the country, ”Creep” was continuing its insidious retail sync infection, spreading from shopping malls to local alternative radio stations.

He was famous. He was a visionary. He was a millionaire.

And yet, as he sat in his newly installed, custom-built corner office on Sunset Boulevard, staring out through the seamless, three-eighths-inch acoustic-rated premium tempered glass, he felt completely, entirely broke.

The Net-90 Rule.

It was the ultimate bureaucratic chokehold of the entertainment industry. The studio had signed the distribution deal. The retail syncs were logging plays. But the actual, physical checks wouldn’t clear the accounting departments for another seventy days.

”Elias,” Paul Rudd sighed, dropping a stack of faxes onto Elias’s massive steel desk. Paul was wearing a much nicer, tailored suit now, having officially embraced his role as the public proxy of Sovereign Media. ”William Morris just called again. They want to set up a general meeting. And Vogue faxed over the proofs from the Anna Wintour shoot. The bandage looks incredible. It’s starting a trend. Kids in Seattle are literally taping their noses.”

”I am aware of the aesthetic impact, Paul,” Elias murmured, tapping his silver pen against the desk. ”But prestige does not pay the electrical bill. We are currently operating a twenty-thousand-square-foot facility on the fumes of an underground boxing match. I need liquidity.”

The digital loan shark in his head, completely unsympathetic to the concept of delayed corporate payouts, chimed in to collect its daily tax.

[CHA-CHING!][SYSTEM WARNING: DAILY MAINTENANCE FEE DEDUCTION INITIATED.][DEDUCTING -$50.00 USD FROM LIQUID CASH RESERVE.]

Elias’s jaw tightened. His liquid cash reserve was resting at $431,680.00. It was a substantial sum, but he refused to touch it for frivolous operational costs. That money was his war chest for hostile acquisitions. If he bled it dry on electricity and catering while waiting for the Net-90 checks to clear, he would be vulnerable.

Before he could calculate a new extortion target, the heavy rotary phone on his desk rang. It wasn’t the main switchboard line; it was the private, direct international line.

Elias picked up the receiver. ”Sovereign Media.”

”Elias!”

The voice on the other end was frantic, laced with a heavy Dutch-Indonesian accent. It was Ruben.

Elias’s posture instantly snapped from relaxed boredom to a terrifying, cold rigidity. Ruben never panicked. Ruben was a creature of logic and accounting.

”Clarify the crisis, Ruben,” Elias commanded, his baritone voice dropping an octave.

”It’s Mama,” Ruben stammered, the sound of papers shuffling frantically in the background. ”It’s the land, Elias. The small plot of inheritance land in Java that Papa supposedly secured before he left. There’s a firm here in Den Haag. A collection agency called Visser & Zonen. They claim they bought a defaulted promissory note attached to the land’s collateral from an Indonesian bank. They are demanding payment in full, with compound interest. They’re threatening to force a lien on the house here in Den Haag by Friday if we don’t pay.”

Elias’s eyes turned into dark, bottomless voids of pure, absolute violence.

”A lien on the house,” Elias repeated softly.

”They were here, Elias,” Ruben’s voice cracked. ”Two guys in cheap suits. They pounded on the door. They yelled at Mama. She’s terrified. She’s talking about selling her jewelry to pay them off. I looked at the paperwork, Elias. The math is predatory. It’s a balloon payment structure designed to force a default. They want twenty thousand Euros. We don’t have it.”

The temperature in Elias’s office seemed to drop twenty degrees.

The Runway Mafia could try to sabotage his campaigns. Harvey Weinstein could try to steal his backend gross. Elias viewed those attacks as professional courtesy—a game played by equals.

But threatening Rina Suryadi? Threatening the matriarch of the dynasty? That wasn’t a game. That was a death sentence.

”Do not let her sell a single piece of jewelry, Ruben,” Elias stated, his voice a lethal, silken whisper that made Paul Rudd physically take a step back from the desk. ”I am handling the logistical deployment. I will be in Den Haag in fourteen hours.”

Elias slammed the phone down.

He stood up, grabbing his vintage leather jacket from the back of his chair.

”Paul. Pack a bag,” Elias ordered, his eyes blazing with sociopathic intent. ”We are flying to Amsterdam. You are going to function as my legal proxy.”

”Amsterdam?!” Paul panicked. ”Elias, I can’t speak Dutch! I don’t know anything about international real estate law! I just learned how to use a fax machine!”

”Your ignorance is irrelevant. You will wear a suit and look expensive,” Elias snapped.

The heavy glass door of his office swung open. Charlize Theron stepped in, holding a script. She took one look at Elias’s face and stopped. She had seen him angry before—a cold, calculating anger when someone tried to touch his money. But this was different. This was visceral.

”What happened?” Charlize asked, her South African accent sharp.

”A localized debt crisis in my primary familial territory,” Elias said, walking toward the door. ”I am executing a hostile extraction. Paul and I are leaving for the airport.”

Charlize didn’t hesitate. She tossed the script onto a desk. ”I’m coming with you.”

”Charlize, your presence is not required for a financial dispute in a Dutch suburb,” Elias countered. ”Your current priority is the Lethal Weapon press junket.”

”I don’t care about the press junket,” Charlize shot back, crossing her arms, her blue eyes flashing with stubborn defiance. ”I’m your partner, Elias. And honestly? I want to see the woman who managed to raise a terrifying capitalist monster like you. I’m coming.”

Elias looked at her. He didn’t have the time or the CP to argue with a stubborn Hollywood queen.

”Fine,” Elias muttered. ”But we are flying economy. I refuse to pay a premium for short-notice intercontinental transit.”

Fourteen agonizingly cramped, deeply uncomfortable hours later, the Sovereign Media strike team arrived at a small, narrow row house in the working-class district of Den Haag.

The biting winter wind whipped off the North Sea, rattling the thin windows.

Elias didn’t knock. He pushed the front door open, stepping into the cramped hallway that smelled strongly of old wood and frying sambal.

Rina Suryadi emerged from the small kitchen, holding a wooden spoon. When she saw Elias, her eyes widened. Then, she saw the towering, impossibly beautiful blonde woman in combat boots standing behind him, followed by a nervous man in a slightly oversized suit.

A massive, comedic sweatdrop materialized on Rina’s forehead. She practically dropped the wooden spoon.

”Elias Suryadi van Kempen!” Rina shrieked, her voice a mix of profound shock and immediate motherly panic. She completely ignored the fact that her son was now a global millionaire and immediately began swatting at him with a dishtowel. ”Astaga! Kenapa kamu bawa bule-bule cantik ke rumah kita yang sempit ini?! Mama belum sapu lantai! You didn’t tell me you were bringing guests! Look at her! She looks like a movie star! We only have instant coffee!” (Oh my god! Why did you bring beautiful foreigners to our cramped house?! Mom hasn’t swept the floor!)

”Mama, calm down. The aesthetics of the real estate are irrelevant,” Elias said, smoothly dodging the dishtowel and kissing her cheek. ”This is Charlize Theron. She is my Head of Agency Expansion. And Paul, my Executive Assistant.”

Charlize smiled, a genuine, warm smile entirely devoid of her usual fierce Hollywood armor. She stepped forward, ignoring the cramped space and the smell of cooking oil.

”It’s wonderful to meet you, Mrs. van Kempen,” Charlize said politely. ”Elias has told me nothing about you, which means you must be incredibly important to him.”

Rina sweatdropped harder, wiping her hands nervously on her apron. ”Oh, you are too kind. Please, sit. I was just making Nasi Goreng. I hope you like spicy food.”

”I love it,” Charlize grinned. She actually took off her denim jacket, rolled up the sleeves of her t-shirt, and walked directly into the tiny kitchen. ”Show me how to make it. I need to know how to feed this monster something other than stale bread and instant noodles.”

Elias watched, utterly bewildered, as the future Academy Award winner and global fashion icon began happily washing dishes in his mother’s cramped, peeling sink.

He didn’t have time to process the bizarre, sitcom-level domesticity.

Ruben emerged from the small living room, pushing his glasses up his nose, looking incredibly stressed. He handed Elias a stack of heavy, official-looking documents.

”Visser & Zonen,” Ruben said, his voice tight. ”They called again this morning. They said they’re sending their collectors at 3:00 PM today to finalize the lien unless we have a certified check for twenty thousand Euros.”

Elias took the documents. He didn’t sit down. He stood in the narrow hallway, his eyes scanning the legalese.

He didn’t see an insurmountable legal threat. He saw a desperate, sloppy, incredibly vulnerable bluff.

Elias engaged his Photographic Memory, connecting the name ”Visser & Zonen” to a massive, systemic data dump he had processed regarding the 1992 Dutch real estate crash.

”Twenty thousand Euros,” Elias murmured, a dark, lethal smile spreading across his face. ”These men are not predators, Ruben. They are scavengers fighting over scraps on a sinking ship.”

At exactly 3:00 PM, a heavy, aggressive knock rattled the front door of the narrow house.

Elias gestured for his mother to stay in the kitchen. He opened the door.

Standing on the stoop were two men. They were the classic archetype of European debt collectors: thick necks, cheap, ill-fitting gray suits, and an air of practiced, thuggish intimidation.

The lead collector, a man with a broken nose and a sneer, looked at Elias’s vintage leather jacket and scoffed. ”You the kid? We’re here for Rina Suryadi. Time’s up. We have the paperwork to file the lien.”

Elias didn’t step back. He didn’t raise his voice. He simply projected the cold, absolute dominance of a man who owned the bank.

He stepped back, gesturing grandly into the small living room. ”Enter.”

The two collectors exchanged a confused look, but stepped inside.

They froze.

Sitting on the worn, plaid sofa was Paul Rudd. He was wearing his Anti-Awkwardness Sunglasses, looking utterly relaxed and terrifyingly arrogant. Charlize Theron was leaning against the wall near the window, her arms crossed, her fierce blue eyes locked onto the two men with the intensity of a sniper.

The sheer, overwhelming, high-fashion aesthetic of the two Hollywood transplants completely destroyed the dingy, working-class atmosphere of the room. It felt like walking into a trap set by billionaires.

Elias stood near the small television set, his hands slipped casually into his pockets. He mentally engaged the digital loan shark. He needed to completely shatter their reality.

[CHA-CHING!]

The air in the small living room thickened, dropping the ambient temperature by ten degrees. Elias didn’t just look at the two thugs; he looked through them, exposing every financial insecurity they possessed.

”Kau pikir jas mahalmu bisa melunasi utang ini, anak muda?” the lead collector sneered, though his voice cracked slightly under the suffocating weight of Elias’s aura. ”Bayar penuh, atau ibumu keluar dari rumah ini!” (You think your expensive suit can pay off this debt, kid? Pay in full, or your mother is out of this house!)

Elias didn’t blink. He pulled a single, forged document from his inner jacket pocket—a document he had meticulously drafted on the flight over, utilizing his knowledge of the impending Dutch subprime crash. He slid it across the small coffee table.

”Jas ini lebih berharga dari seluruh portofolio perusahaanmu yang gagal, kawan,” Elias stated, his baritone voice a smooth, lethal whisper that sent a shiver down the collector’s spine. (This suit is worth more than the entire portfolio of your failing company, friend.)

The collector frowned, looking down at the paper. It looked like an internal memo from the De Nederlandsche Bank (The Dutch Central Bank).

”Bank Sentral Belanda akan melikuidasi perusahaanmu hari Jumat ini,” Elias continued flawlessly, executing the Dutch Foreclosure Hack. (The Dutch Central Bank will liquidate your company this Friday.) ”Visser & Zonen over-leveraged their commercial real estate portfolio in 1989. The subprime mortgage bubble has burst. You aren’t here collecting a legitimate debt. You are frantically trying to shake down working-class families for liquid cash before the federal auditors freeze your accounts and lock the doors to your office.”

A massive, cartoonish sweatdrop materialized on the lead collector’s forehead. The color drained entirely from his face. The kid wasn’t just guessing; he was reciting the exact, terrifying rumors that had been circulating the Visser & Zonen office all week. The company was drowning, and the bosses were desperate for cash to flee the country.

”You... you can’t know that,” the thug stammered, looking at Paul, who just adjusted his sunglasses with a smug, knowing smirk.

”I know everything,” Elias whispered, stepping closer, entirely merciless. ”Now. Here is the transaction.”

Elias pulled a thick, banded stack of US dollars from his pocket. It was the emergency cash he had forced himself to withdraw before leaving LA. The physical pain of parting with the money was immense, but protecting the matriarch superseded capital preservation.

He dropped the cash onto the table next to the forged memo.

”Jual surat utang tanah ini kepadaku seharga sepuluh persen,” Elias demanded, his eyes flashing with dark, absolute authority. (Sell this land promissory note to me for ten percent.) ”Dan kau punya uang saku untuk lari ke Belgia. Menolak, dan kau bisa menikmati liburan di penjara federal.” (And you have pocket money to flee to Belgium. Refuse, and you can enjoy a vacation in federal prison.)

The two collectors stared at the cash. Two thousand dollars. It was a tenth of what the debt was worth on paper, but it was physical, untraceable liquidity. If the company went under on Friday, this cash was their only severance package.

The lead collector didn’t argue. His thug persona was completely annihilated by the sheer, terrifying intellect of the teenager in front of him.

With a shaking hand, he reached into his cheap suit, pulled out the original, notarized promissory note, and slammed it onto the table. He snatched the two thousand dollars, shoving it into his pocket.

”Take it,” the man choked out, backing toward the door. ”The land is yours. You’re a freaking psycho, kid.”

They practically ran out of the house, slamming the door behind them.

The silence in the living room was absolute.

Paul Rudd let out a long, shuddering breath, pulling off his sunglasses. ”We just reverse-extorted a Dutch debt collection agency in your mother’s living room. Elias, I don’t know whether to applaud you or call an exorcist.”

Charlize walked over, picking up the promissory note. She looked at Elias, a soft, incredibly genuine smile on her face. ”You bought the debt. The land is free and clear.”

Elias didn’t celebrate. He picked up the promissory note and carefully ripped it directly in half, then into quarters, destroying the liability forever.

He turned toward the kitchen, where his mother was standing in the doorway, clutching her apron, tears welling in her eyes.

Rina Suryadi didn’t care about the complex financial maneuvering. She just knew her son had protected their home. She rushed forward, throwing her arms around Elias in a tight, desperate hug.

”Elias,” Rina sobbed quietly into his shoulder. ”Terima kasih, Nak. Terima kasih.” (Thank you, son. Thank you.)

Elias stood rigidly for a moment. He was a monster in the boardroom, a predator on the runway, and a sociopath with his wallet. But as he slowly raised his arms and hugged his mother back, the cold, calculating aura completely vanished.

”It’s handled, Ma,” Elias murmured softly, resting his chin on her head. ”No one touches the family.”

Deep within his mind, the system, profoundly moved by the absurd combination of brutal extortion and genuine filial piety, rang out in a golden symphony.

Elias pulled back from the hug, his emotional moment concluded. The capitalist instantly returned.

”Now,” Elias announced, turning to Charlize and Paul. ”I believe the Nasi Goreng is ready. Eat quickly. The flight back to Los Angeles departs in six hours, and I refuse to pay a rebooking fee.”
