Rebirth 1991: Keep the Fame, I'll Take the Royalties

The Diva Intervention

The interior of the 1984 Honda Civic hatchback was a sweltering symphony of peeling vinyl and rattling metal, but for Paul Rudd, it currently felt like a luxury box at the Super Bowl.

He was practically hyperventilating in the passenger seat, both hands hovering over the cracked dashboard radio.

”...and taking over the request lines for the third hour in a row, here’s the track that’s suddenly tearing up the West Coast. From out of nowhere, this is Elias van Kempen with ’Creep’ on the world-famous KROQ...”

The haunting, heavily distorted guitar riff poured out of the blown-out speakers, followed by Elias’s deep, melancholic baritone.

”Elias!” Paul screamed over the noise of the wind rushing through the open windows. ”We are on KROQ! We actually did it! We bullied a radio mafia, and now we’re rotating next to Nirvana and Pearl Jam! Do you realize what this means?! We are going to be millionaires!”

Elias van Kempen sat behind the wheel, his striking face an absolute mask of aristocratic detachment. He wasn’t smiling. He didn’t turn up the volume. He merely checked the rearview mirror to ensure the Civic’s failing exhaust pipe wasn’t actively on fire.

”We are already millionaires on paper, Paul,” Elias corrected smoothly, navigating the heavy late-afternoon traffic on Sunset Boulevard. ”And airplay is merely the acquisition of a distribution pipeline. It is necessary, but it is passive. Tommy Mottola and the Pop Dictators still control the macro-narrative. To dismantle Sony Music’s monopoly, we cannot simply rely on teenage angst in shopping malls. We need a nuclear deterrent.”

Paul stopped cheering, lowering his hands. He looked at Elias, a familiar sense of dread creeping into his stomach. ”A nuclear deterrent? Elias, what does that mean? We just won a battle! Can we please just celebrate for five minutes before you declare war on another global conglomerate?”

”A true capitalist never celebrates a victory while the enemy still breathes,” Elias stated flawlessly. He shifted gears with a painful grind. ”We need a Voice. We need a global icon with enough cultural gravity to pull the entire industry out of orbit. We need Whitney Houston.”

Paul stared at him. The sheer, incomprehensible audacity of the statement paralyzed the actor. ”Whitney Houston? Whitney Houston is the biggest pop star on the planet! She just married Bobby Brown! She’s untouchable! Elias, you can’t just walk up to Whitney Houston and offer her a job!”

”I am not offering her a job, Paul. I am offering her a hostile extraction,” Elias smiled, a cold, predatory gleam entering his dark eyes.

He had done his research. The Photographic Memory didn’t just store contracts; it stored the historical timeline of Hollywood tragedies. In 1992, Whitney’s marriage to R&B bad boy Bobby Brown was fresh, and the financial bleeding had already begun. The entourage, the parasitic managers, the exorbitant tour expenses—they were all quietly draining her assets behind the scenes.

Elias didn’t want to manage Whitney Houston. He wanted to own the infrastructure that surrounded her. He wanted to be the only shark in the water that she trusted.

”There is an exclusive, invite-only album launch party tonight at a private estate in Beverly Hills,” Elias announced, tapping the steering wheel. ”Whitney and Bobby will be there. We are going.”

”We?!” Paul squeaked, his voice jumping an octave. ”Elias, I don’t have an Armani suit to return! I have a flannel shirt and twelve dollars!”

”You are not going inside, Paul. You are managing logistics in the perimeter vehicle,” Elias clarified, much to Paul’s profound relief. ”I am going inside. And I am going to detonate a financial bomb on her inner circle.”

Three hours later, the rusted blue Honda Civic limped to a halt a block away from the sprawling, gated Beverly Hills estate. The street was lined with Bentleys, Ferraris, and Rolls Royces.

Elias stepped out of the Civic. He was wearing his flawless, three-thousand-dollar Armani suit—he had seamlessly delayed the return policy using a fabricated story about a dry-cleaning accident that bought him a 48-hour extension. He looked like European royalty.

”Wait here. Do not turn the engine off; the starter motor is compromised,” Elias ordered Paul.

Elias walked toward the estate. The entrance was heavily guarded by private security, a velvet rope holding back a swarm of paparazzi.

He didn’t hesitate. He bypassed the line of D-list celebrities begging for entry. He walked straight up to the head of security, a massive man with an earpiece holding a clipboard.

Elias didn’t say a word. He pulled a crisp fifty-dollar bill from his pocket. He smoothly, unapologetically slid it into the breast pocket of the security guard’s suit.

”Elias van Kempen,” Elias murmured, his voice a low, commanding rumble. ”Sovereign Media. European Capital Investment. I believe Arista Records left my name off the printed manifest.”

Deep in his brain, the system registered the sting.

The guard looked down at the fifty dollars. It wasn’t a massive bribe, but the sheer, overwhelming confidence of the teenager, combined with the impeccably tailored Armani suit, created a perfect illusion of wealth and power.

The guard unhooked the velvet rope. ”Enjoy the party, Mr. van Kempen.”

Elias walked through the heavy oak doors into a world of pure, unadulterated 1990s excess.

The mansion was packed with the elite of the music industry. Waiters carried silver trays of champagne past executives in silk suits and pop stars glittering with diamonds. The air was thick with the smell of expensive perfume and the loud, pulsing beat of an R&B track.

Elias moved through the crowd like a shark navigating a coral reef. He ignored the executives. He ignored the supermodels. His eyes tracked with clinical precision until he found the VIP section near the massive, illuminated swimming pool.

Sitting on a white leather sofa, looking stunning but slightly detached, was Whitney Houston.

Standing next to her, holding a glass of cognac and laughing loudly, was Bobby Brown. He was dressed in a flashy, oversized suit, surrounded by an entourage of yes-men and managers.

Seated across from Bobby, looking incredibly smug, was a heavy-set man wearing a gold chain and a cheap suit. Elias’s memory instantly flagged him: The Tour Promoter. The parasite currently siphoning millions off the couple’s upcoming international tour through inflated logistics contracts.

Elias didn’t wait for an introduction. He didn’t ask for permission.

He walked directly into the VIP section, bypassing three bodyguards who were too stunned by his absolute, aristocratic entitlement to stop him.

Elias stopped right in front of the coffee table, blocking Bobby Brown’s view of his entourage.

He needed to shatter the room instantly.

[CHA-CHING!]

The air temperature in the VIP section plummeted. The ambient noise of the party seemed to fade as the sheer, suffocating gravity of Elias’s aura pressed down on the small group. He didn’t just look at them; he evaluated them with the cold, dead eyes of an executioner looking at a spreadsheet.

Bobby Brown stopped laughing. He frowned, his aggressive instincts flaring as he looked at the teenager standing in his space.

”Hey, kid. You lost?” Bobby snapped, stepping forward, trying to assert dominance. ”This is a private table. Back up before my guys throw you in the pool.”

Elias didn’t back up. He didn’t flinch.

”Siapa kau berani ikut campur urusan uangku, anak kecil?!” Bobby demanded, his voice rising, drawing the attention of the surrounding guests. (Who are you to interfere with my money, little kid?!)

Elias offered a slow, chilling, utterly shameless smile.

”Aku bukan ikut campur, Bobby,” Elias said, his baritone voice a smooth, velvet hammer that completely crushed Bobby’s aggression. (I am not interfering, Bobby.) ”Aku sedang menawarkan penyelamatan.” (I am offering a rescue.)

Whitney Houston looked up, her dark eyes locking onto Elias. She had seen him before. In the lobby of the Beverly Hills Hotel, silently dominating a Warner Music executive. The memory instantly captivated her attention.

Elias didn’t look at Whitney. He looked directly at the sweating tour promoter sitting on the sofa.

”Firma akuntansiku menemukan bahwa promotormu telah menggelembungkan biaya katering turnya hingga 300%,” Elias stated loudly, his voice carrying perfectly across the silent VIP section, executing the Audit Ambush Hack with flawless precision. (My accounting firm found that your promoter has inflated the tour catering costs by 300%.)

The promoter’s face drained of blood, turning a sickly shade of ash. He dropped his cigar onto the table.

”You... what the hell are you talking about?!” the promoter stammered, frantically looking at Bobby. ”Bobby, this kid is crazy! I don’t even know him!”

”You don’t know me because I don’t socialize with middle-management thieves,” Elias countered, stepping closer, entirely ignoring Bobby and speaking directly to the terrified promoter. ”You are double-billing the logistics company. You are routing the surplus cash through a dummy corporation registered in Delaware. You are stealing from your own client.”

Elias slowly turned his hypnotic, predatory gaze onto Whitney.

”Whitney, kau secara teknis mendanai gaya hidup mereka,” Elias whispered, the truth cutting through the Hollywood illusions like a razor blade. (Whitney, you are technically funding their lifestyle.) ”Tinggalkan promotor parasit ini, atau IRS akan menjadikan kalian berdua contoh di berita utama besok.” (Leave this parasitic promoter, or the IRS will make you both an example in tomorrow’s headlines.)

The silence around the pool was absolute.

Bobby Brown looked at the promoter. The promoter was currently sweating so profusely that his shirt collar was soaked. He wasn’t denying it with outrage; he was looking around for an exit. The guilt was written across his face in neon letters.

”You...” Bobby hissed, grabbing the promoter by the collar of his cheap suit. ”You’re stealing from my wife?!”

The VIP section erupted into chaotic shouting. The bodyguards surged forward to separate Bobby from the promoter.

Elias didn’t stay to watch the bloodbath. He had detonated the bomb; he didn’t need to stand in the blast radius.

He smoothly turned on his heel and walked away, slipping back into the crowd with the effortless grace of a ghost.

But as he walked, he felt eyes burning into his back.

He glanced over his shoulder. Whitney Houston had stood up. She wasn’t looking at the fight. She was looking directly at Elias, her eyes wide with a mixture of shock, awe, and an undeniable, magnetic fascination.

A teenager in a black suit had just walked into her life, bypassed her husband, exposed the rot in her inner circle, and walked away without asking for a single thing in return.

The seed of financial Netori had been planted.

Elias smiled faintly and walked out the front doors of the mansion.

He approached the rattling Honda Civic. Paul was practically hyperventilating in the driver’s seat.

”Elias! You were in there for ten minutes! Did you meet her? Did you offer her a contract?!”

”I didn’t offer her a contract, Paul,” Elias said, sliding into the passenger seat and resting his head back. ”I offered her a realization. Drive.”

As the Civic sputtered into the Beverly Hills night, the clock struck midnight.

Elias felt the familiar, dull pain in his chest as his balance updated. But the victory was absolute.

”The board is set, Paul,” Elias murmured into the darkness. ”The Queen is officially in play.”
